Il tesoro del drago

Rate this book

Fluffy marshmallows! What a sweet sweet read! 😍 Now I’m very tempted to read the whole ”Dreamspun Beyond” series. I know that lots of people think M.A. Church’s works are a bit too fluffy or whimsical. But I loved her Harvest Series and I sure loved this book too. 😉

Avery is an omega who’s tired of being treated as one. Damn it, he’s not a glass figurine and he never will be. 😁 But his parents just don’t seem to get it. He’s supposed to be proper and elegant and spoiled. And being introduced to potential suitors and his parents trying to marry him off into a wealthy family at his very own birthday celebrating his first adulthood certainly doesn’t help him. 😂 He longs to see the world and yearn for something that he knows he’s always been craving. He just needs some air from that noisy, crowded party so stepping out to the patio for a while sounds like an excellent idea.

Warwick, an ancient dragon, who’s an astute and shrewd businessman has been enjoying his life for a long long time. He has everything he needs, a hoard that’s bigger than anyone else’s, houses, cars, any material he so desires. But he doesn’t get all these privileges by being soft and empathetic and kind. He’s a businessman and he takes care of his money seriously. 😏 So when Alpha Montgomery thinks he can avoid paying back a debt from hundred years ago by not picking up his calls and avoiding his emails, Warwick decided that a visit is due to the Sunset Creek pack. He went there to get his money back and kick everyone out of the land that’s going to become his. What he didn’t expect was to fall for the vey omega whose father owed a lot of money to him. 😉

Despite meeting from undesirable conditions, Avery can’t deny that Warwick is his true mate. That scent, that chocolately and dark and decadent scent calls to him like a siren calling to the sailors. He also knows that he’s the only chance that would save his whole pack from becoming homeless and starting from zero again. Besides, Warwick seems like a nice guy. He’s so much different from everyone in his pack. He genuinely listens to him, try to know about his everyday life and seems to be smitten with him. He has always known that he’d be married off to a suitor that’d benefit the pack one day. So it’s definitely a bonus that the suitor is his true mate. What can possibly go wrong? An ancient and smitten dragon and a rebellious, sassy omega? Sounds good to him! 😁

There’s no angst at all. It’s all about how Warwick and Avery get to know each other and fall in love in the end. You’d think over 200 pages of courting, UST, fluffy sweet writing would overwhelm you but it’s not. 😌 In fact, I’m sad that the book has ended. 😭 I definitely wouldn’t mind reading a follow-up story of these two lovers. 😍 [author: M.A. Church just got everything right on this one. The writing is spot on, the banters are witty and funny and interesting, the relationship dynamic between these two is sizzling. 🔥 And my god, Warwick can kiss! 💋 Those kisses are sizzling! 🔥 I need me someone who can kiss me breathless like Warwick. 😂 *happy sigh* 😌 And the mating rituals of wolves in this world are interesting, realistic and erotic. 😌 I loved all that chase and run stuff. And the consummation of marriage? Sweet Jesus Mama! 😳😱 That was one hell of a hot deflowering! 😁 Who knows dragons are so good in the sack? 😏 The novel is sweet and fluffy but definitely not overly done. I’m begging for the author to write a second book in the series because I want the first row ticket to that show. 👏 And in case if you wondering after my preaching, yup, I really loved this book. 😍 Just what I needed from my recent heavy reads. 😌

Favorite excerpts from the novella:

Everybody knew about dragons. Once a dragon got obsessed with something, there was no stopping them. They would do anything it took to possess whatever it was they wanted. Most dragons collected gold and precious gems. Granted, he’d heard rumors of other dragons who collected things like ribbons or rocks, so not all of them were preoccupied with pretty, sparkly things. But by the gods, he wasn’t a thing. In the end, it didn’t matter what they collected. They were very possessive of their hoard.

“There’s a difference between owing respect and earning it.”

“I protect what’s mine, and you’re soon to be mine. As you may know, a dragon’s hoard is of the upmost importance to them.” “I’m not an object—you do realize that, right?” “Indeed I do, but that doesn’t change the fact you are mine.”

“I… it’s, ah, dark and delicious—kind of like melted chocolate. I… I like chocolate. It’s really, um, yummy.” Warwick had never been called yummy before, but he could work with that.

“You smell like summer—my favorite season. I could eat you up.”

The urge to wrap Avery up and protect him was slowly driving Warwick insane. He wanted to shift, to hold Avery close and fly away to his castle with Avery gripped gently in his talons. Mine, mine, mine. Avery was his—his to have, his to take care of. His to protect.

The kiss was like the man himself, strong and confident, but there was a hint of need, of longing.

“You…. If I had to choose between you and my hoard, I would choose you.”

“But I don’t need anything. I have you.” “You do. Have me, that is. While I was desperately searching for an inanimate object to give you, it finally dawned on me the most important thing I could give you was my heart. And that, my dear Omega, you have. I love you.”

“Without love, none of it meant anything.”

Dragons! Fated Mates! Possessive dudes! Arranged Marriage! Virgin!

Sorry. I had a fluffgasm. I lie. I had multiple fluffgasms whilst listening to this audiobook. The shifter fluff is super cute, super fluffy with a couple of super sweet MCs who are crazy hot for each other just the way I like it.

Warwick is a very old dragon shifter and loan shark who entered into an agreement with alpha Montgomery 100 yrs ago. It's now time for Alpha Montgomery to pay up and guess who doesn't have the money? What he does have are some lucrative businesses AND an omega son that makes Warwick's dragon flail like a red panda. The red panda dragon will not be denied.

Avery is not happy with his father but it's mostly because of his poor money management skills because his wolf knew it's mate when he first set eyes on Warwick, who isn't exactly hard on the eyes.

From that point on I happily road the Fluff Express all the way to Happy Happy Joy Joy for all the days to come land.

The sights I loved along the way were Warwick's courting of Avery. Avery's adorable wolf form. He's so playful! Their first shift together on the full moon. The details of their shifts including their extra powers. Avery's never being afraid of Warwick despite the obvious power differential. How attracted they are to each other in every way. The PDAs were the best. THE BEST! They're both possessive of one another. How the tension built to a critical mass and Church didn't hold back when they finally do the deed. And everything after that had me all...

Dorian Bane's narration was eargasmic. I like the register of his voice. He does the deep, rumbly thing exceptionally well. I particularly liked his performance for Warwick and the accent stayed consistent throughout. I was slightly less enamored with his Avery but not enough to prevent me from listening to this story again in the future.

If you're looking for some feel good, low angst fluffy shifter goodness, Dragon's Hoard delivers.

3.5 Hearts! - BR with Sara!

I haven’t read or listened to a lot of the Dreamspun Desires and Beyond series, mainly because I like a bit of grit and a lot more smex than what they can typically offer, but I will say that so far, this has been my favorite! Who can resist ABO dynamics plus a dragon shifter?? Not me, apparently!

Werewolf Avery is an omega, and because he’s an omega, he’s been coddled and fussed over his entire life. Some may flourish under such attention, but Avery resents that many think he’s weak and incapable, and since he’s been given very few responsibilities, he’s basically bored with all the mundanity. When his father fails to make good on a business deal with a powerful dragon, Avery suddenly finds himself the consolation prize. A bit indignant and disgruntled, his tune soon changes, as his wolf recognizes Warwick as his mate.

Warwick is definitely at the top of the shifter food chain - powerful, secretive, a loner by choice - he’s a powerful dragon with endless resources and special abilities. When Warwick goes to collect his payment from the alpha werewolf, the last thing he expected was for his dragon to demand the alpha’s son. For the first time ever, someone has piqued his interest and is now the top priority.

What ensues is a really wonderful romance between these two, despite the fact that it takes place over a short 3 days. However, everyone knows this is totally acceptable in the paranormal shifter world involving mates, so it’s completely plausible to go from strangers to love in a blink of an eye!

As a warning, this has infuriating fathers being infuriating and no ABO heat cycles or KNOTTING. Darn! There is however, a surprising and pleasing amount of heat regarding Avery and Warwick’s “wedding night”, and it was all so sweet in how they work things out to best suit them and their future as a couple.

Again, Harlequinesque type romance typically does not appeal strongly to my usual tastes, but this one was a standout in my opinion. Thus, if you like these sorts of tropes, especially that of dragons and their mysterious lore, this was an unexpected enjoyable treat!

Thank you to the author/publisher for a copy in exchange for a honest review

Avery Montgomery is a smart, sweet and sassy Omega werewolf who suddenly finds himself being mated off to a fearsome and ancient dragon shifter named Warwick Ehecatl, all because his father, Alpha Montgomery, has royally screwed up the pack’s financial dealings, for centuries, and now owes Warwick for huge sums of money for past loans that have now come due.

So, it’s either lose their pack lands and find themselves all homeless, or gift the dragon with his demands: in lieu of payment, Warwick wants Alpha Montgomery’s Omega son for his mate and three of the pack’s most profitable businesses to call it even. Apparently daddy Montgomery believes in sacrificing the one for the many, even if that one is his only son and the packs only Omega, so Avery doesn’t have much of a say in the matter. Luckily, though, Avery is a forgiving sort and is willing to give himself over to the dragon’s requests to keep his family and fellow pack members safe and comfortable. What a guy.

What initially seems like a dire situation for young Avery – what with being essentially handed off for an arranged mating with a fricken dragon shifter – actually reveals itself to be a fateful blessing in disguise once Warwick and Avery meet and sparks fly. By the dragon shifter's side, Avery finally finds himself feeling accepted and valued for who he is, not what he is, and although a dragon/werewolf pairing initially seems unlikely to all parties involved, Warwick and Avery find themselves connecting naturally in all kinds of ways, complementing each other’s personalities perfectly and sharing an undeniable chemistry that will no doubt prove combustible in the bedroom.

Warwick and Avery’s romance was a lot of fun to read and I liked the dynamic of the dragon/werewolf pairing. It's a pairing I haven’t come across in my shifter reading until now, but one I certainly wish to read more of.

This has definitely been the sexiest of the Dreamspun Beyond books I’ve had the pleasure of reading so far. It had all of the delicious prerequisite mating, claiming and biting moments that one would expect from a good sexy shifter romance. It was also really sweet, with plenty of romantic declarations and even some really fun scenes with Avery and Warwick playing together in their vastly different shifted forms. This story definitely balanced the heat with the playful getting-to-know-you moments really well, limiting any potential angst to non-existent levels, which I appreciated greatly considering the mood I was in.

What I will say though, is that unlike the previous Dreamspun Beyond books I’ve read, this story simply followed the relationship development between Warwick and Avery, forgoing any secondary plot line of intrigue or mystery, like has been featured in so many of the other books within the Beyond line. I actually found myself a bit disappointed by this lack of a bigger pressing paranormal story arc, because, honestly, those were truly the elements that I valued most in the other stories I’ve enjoyed, especially where the world-building and story progression was concerned. I know not all the stories need to follow the same formula and that’s fine, I just found myself very aware that nothing but the romance was really happening here. Thankfully, it was a good romance, so my complaints are few.

If you enjoy shifter themed M/M stories and are after something fun, sexy and well written, then this might just be the story for you. <3

Very sweet mate story. No real drama just sweet and easy. Both had the "mate" feeling and neither fought it or pushed away. Just how I like my mate stories, "Mine, mine, mine."

Warwick is an ancient dragon shifter who has so much power no one would dare cross him. One day Alpha Montgomery of the local wolf pack loans a great deal of money from Warwick, but when the time is up to pay up, the wolf admits he doesn’t have the money.

And that’s why Warwick is at the pack house, to collect his money or take the land the wolves live on. But one look at the Alpha’s Omega son and Warwick knows he has to have him as his mate. So instead of paying back the money the Alpha agrees to ‘give away’ his son.

Avery is not happy his father just hands him over like that. He can’t believe his father didn’t at least try to pay the dragon back. He had a hundred years! But now that he is promised to the dragon, he knows he has to make the best of it. Except one look and Avery knows he has found his true mate. And that’s why he can’t be sad about the arrangement.

Warwick and Avery meet to get to know each other and it is clear both really want this, whatever it is between them. They sure have enough chemistry, that’s for sure..

I liked how big bad dragon Warwick went all soft and tender whenever he was around Avery. He really wanted the Omega to like him and not be forced to be with him. And Avery was just adorable. Since Omegas were to be virgin until they mated, Avery was still pretty innocent. But he knew he wanted Warwick and wasn’t too shy about it.

This was pretty fluffy and had no relationship angst.. This was high on the insta love, as with almost all shifter books, but that wasn’t a problem for me at all. These guys were cute together and the sexy times were pretty decent too.

There was something that bothered me throughout this though.

“I need a loan.”
“Most people do when they come to me.” Precise and to the point. He liked that. Warwick opened a desk drawer and withdrew several forms.
“How much?”
Alpha Montgomery quoted a sum, and Warwick lifted a shapely eyebrow. Surprising a dragon wasn’t easy.

Any suggestions?”
“Hmm, let’s see.” He listed his favorites, and Avery nodded. After they decided, Warwick laid the menu down and the waiter miraculously appeared. He repeated what he and Avery wanted, then selected a good red wine to go with it. Once the waiter had their orders, he took the menus and left.

I hate it when authors do this. I’m not a child, I am allowed to know the amount that was loaned, you know. And I know some books have too many details, but saying something like ‘he listed his favorites’ and ‘they ordered’ is not cutting it for me. I need more than this. I need to feel like I’m there. And reading about what they’re having for dinner helps with that. Now I was just guessing what they were eating.

But other than that this was quite the feel good book, so I did enjoy it overall.

If you’re in the mood for sweet and fluffy, this is your book.

That being said, can I please take a moment and rave about the cool stuff?? Ps: THIS PART MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS! BE WARNED!

• The tattoo thing around Warwick’s eyes! I so love the idea!
• The half shift thing he does.
• The effects his blood has on those he shares it with.
• Of course the telepathy.
• And... Really don’t read this if you haven’t read the book! – How cool is that mating mark?????

Should the author have chosen to make this a high octane bad ass story, Warwick would have really had my attention.

I’m not disappointed at all that it isn’t though. I enjoyed the read and the characters were really likeable.

But...my imagination being what it is, I’m already making up stories about what it would have been like if it was action packed and drama fuelled. LOL. Can’t blame me can you?

I really liked the narrator’s voice also, but there were a time or three I thought he used Warwick’s voice for Avery’s part and vice versa. The Warwick voice really fit the Dragon perfectly.

I’m a sucker for the arranged marriage (or mating in this case) trope and I’m ready to admit that this book probably suffered from my failed expectations.

I was expecting some sort of tension and some degree of struggle to make a forced relationship work and what I got was a straightforward and rather simple shifter story.
The only unusual element was the dragon and all the world building that went with him, I really liked that and the parts where Warwick and Avery were in animal form, but apart from that the story was basically . End of the story.
Nothing wrong with it, but it was still a little banal both in writing and contents and not at all what I was hoping for.

Also, I could have done without Avery gushing every other minute over Warwick’s beautiful house, beautiful car and expensive clothes. I appreciate good clothes as much as anyone else, but do you know what my first thought was when it was revealed that Warwick was wearing a sixty-thousand-dollar suit? Doesn’t this dragon know that there are children starving out there?
I don’t care how much money he had and how much he donated to charities, that’s still a slap in the face of poverty, as we use to say here.

I adored this. Simply adored!

This was just what I wanted - strong sexy alpha, strong omega who stands up for himself, some sexy times, first times, schmoop, and HEA!

I loved Avery, especially when he was shifted, how enthusiastic he was as a wolf. I loved that he stood up to Warwick and just wanted love from him. Happy sigh!

If you want a book that'll leave you with fluffy feels, you should read this! Bad ass dragon and the perfect omega werewolf for him.

This is actually the first Dreamspun Beyond (Dreamspinner Press' monthly paranormal line) title that I've read, and I didn't particularly like it. The summary made it sound pretty good: scared omega shifter being forced to wed a dragon he doesn't know to save the rest of his pack from being evicted from their lands. In this kind of situation, I would expect there to be some at least mild angst (Avery, the omega, is marrying a complete stranger, after all) with some BatB-esque scenes with Avery learning how to trust Warwick (the dragon).

Nope.

Instead, we get a shit ton of instalove. Avery is literally giggling and completely trusting of this dragon (which most werewolves do NOT know much about, so Warwick is totally a blank slate on many levels for Avery). There is virtually no conflict for either of them to work through; Avery accepts that he's marrying a dragon, and Warwick accepts that he's marrying a werewolf, even though dragons are notorious for NOT being bonded in this world and NOT having long, monogamous marriages.

Meh.

Also, can we talk about how Avery's father is a total DICK and he totally gets away with it because Avery and Warwick fall into instalove with one another?

Meh. Altogether, it feels like not much happens in this book and it's filled with endless "telling not showing." [edited due to being high at the time of writing this LOL] The information dumps were paragraphs upon paragraphs long at times. No thanks.

I must say that at start things weren't going so well for out little Omega, but all changed when he met the Dragon.
A hundred years ago,Avery's father, the Alpha of their pack, borrowed money from the ancient dragon Warwick Ehecatl, putting up the pack lands as collateral. He had over 100 years to pay his debt but he didn't even try. Warwick knows that the alpha doesn't have the money and so demands Montgomery’s son, Avery, and three businesses as compensation. Avery grew up knowing that being an Omega one day his parents would have married him away to some rich family, but he never thought he would be "sold" to a Dragon to compensate his father stupidity. His parents claim to love him and care for him, but they don't think twice about giving him to the dragon and get angry when Avery tries to give voice to his displasure. Luckily for them Avery is more mature and strong willed than they think and he really loves his family and pack and would have agreed anyway to help them, but this doesn't mean he likes it.
Warwick is ancient, and in all his long life he never felt the pull he feels for Avery, sure during the centuries he lived, he procreated sons with other females(not a fan of this info, but we never see any of his sons or ex...so I ignored it), his race isn't one that focuses on love but thinks only on the continuation of the species. He did his job and now he can mate who he wants, and he wants the little wolf more than any of the jewels he has in his huge hoard.
Avery feels the same pull, and he is sure the Dragon is his mate, but he still fears him bcs he doesn't know the older man. Avery is only 100 years old, he just became a man in werewolf standards and also if he has had some BJs and HJs experiences with his dates, he never went all the way. He could be considered a virgin(well he is in a way)and he always thought his first time would be with a mate who would love and cherish him and be together with him forever. He doesn't even know if Warwick as dragon can be faithful to one person or if he will let Avery have his freedom in making decisions...will the dragon let him work? see his family?

Well Avery my boy, you didn't need to worry bcs Warwick is perfect, literally. He has a nice body, a smart mouth(like Avery), a beautiful mind and is kind, gentle and caring. Together they were cute and hot(when they finally had sex). We could see how much the dragon loved his wolf(I liked to see them together in their animals form, Avery is damn cute as wolf), in his little gestures or when they made love for the first time, or when he told Avery he could do whatever he wanted, that he was one of the strongest person he ever met and that other wolves were stupid in thinking that Omegas were dumb or frail. For Warwick, Avery is more important than his hoard, and in dragons' words he is pratically saying he loves him and the feeling is mutual.

I really like Warwick and I was happy to see Avery win the mate lottery(I want a dragon!!), he is now going to live in a castle(so jealous) with a mate that loves him and is able to extend his life spawn(he will now live as long as Warwick) and that would do anything to make him happy and to protect him.

Maybe for Avery, his father made the best mistake of his life.

The thing that would have made this book better, could have been a mpreg...sadly there was none of that...I would have liked to see their cute babies..

“To be loved by a dragon is to be treasured.” – and what that means, exactly, is what this entertaining, heartwarming, and imaginative novel is all about. I never get tired of reading a new take on dragon lore, and there are a few nice variations in this story that made it a joy to read. Dragons are usually quite powerful, but in this world, they have a few extra talents and a unique view of the world. Werewolves are as hierarchical as ever, with little regard for anyone who is different. The interactions between one dragon and a werewolf pack that ends up in his debt (financially) are the focus of this story, and I really enjoyed the humorous banter between the main characters, getting to know their friends, and the twists and turns of the story.

3.5 stars! That was a quick read and very sweet.. just what I needed. 😍. Since I'm still new to the paranormal genre, I was not expecting such a tender tale of "forever love" and so much old-fashioned romance and it was pleasant surprise. 😉🤩

This hit all my creamy crack comfort reads!

√ Possessive-Aggressive Alpha Dudes

√ Virgin Guys

√ Shifters

√ Scorching Hot Foreplay

If this was a series book, then I'd be the first person in line to gobble these up. I'm addicted to alpha-omega stories, and don't care if it isn't wolf shifters. I really adored Church's The Harvest series. This book was really good. It was sweet, fluffy, cheesiness, and scorching hot. I read it in one sitting from page 1 to the last end. As much as I enjoyed it, I felt the ending was to abrupt. It didn't feel completed and I couldn't get down with that. I would love to continue this as a series, so if that's the route we're going then its A-Okay with me.

Warwick is a total douchebag, but I love his reasoning as being a dragon. He is really old, and used to being on his own. Use to doing what he wants when he wants, and doesn't let anyone step in his way. Avery is an omega passed his prime age, but he's son to the Alpha who owns Warwick money. Coming to collect, sparks fly and both find their mates. Its not what each other expects, but its set in stone from there.

I love how Warwick's demeanor instantly changes for Avery. He's a softer and caring person around him. He's patient, and Avery opens up as well. This totally worked for me. I'm hoping the author can write a series off these characters or possibly this world. I think if you would like a sugary sweet romance with a little paranormal influence then this is right up your alley.

Warwick turned to Avery. “What would you like to drink? Coffee? Hot chocolate? Adult beverage? Cider, maybe? Or something else?” Me, silken sheets, and a big bottle of lube?
.............

Avery was right—his language tended to be a bit old-fashioned, whereas Avery often used slang. They were going to be an odd combination of ancient and new. He rather liked the idea.
....................
we got love and (lust) at first sight. An age difference is next to nothing for this pair. it seems off-balanced, yet balanced at the same time.

this is such a wholesome and perfectly healthy ride that can wipe away your pent-up sadness and sorrow and leave you with only happiness and longing for more of their love.

Another fun buddy read and tag team review with R * A Reader Obsessed *!

Oh this was freaking fracking adorable! This book has just a few of the things I love in my shifter romances.
✓ Dragons
✓ Omega’s
✓ Fated/True Mates

Put those together with the sticky sweet formula that is the new Dreamspun Beyond series and you have one hell of a happy ginger on your hands.

The book opens up with a power prologue set 100 years in the past as Alpha Theodore Montgomery of the Sunset Creek Pack comes to an ancient dragon to ask for a loan. This dragon aka Warwick, is of the classic dragon persuasion who loves shiny things and has an amazing hoard which makes him stinking rich! So when Alpha Montgomery comes asking for one hell of a large sum of money, Warwick wants collateral.

Fast forward 100 years to the present, we get young Omega Avery Montgomery, son of Alpha Montgomery preparing for his birthday party and officially becoming a man. This party will be one the young pup will always remember when a tall dark and devastatingly handsome stranger crashes it and demands payment from his father. Yup, Warwick our filthy rich dragon has come for money and guess what, Alpha Montgomery decided to not save a dime over the last century and can’t pay. Tsk tsk tsk dude, you don’t stiff a loan shark and you definitely don’t stiff a dragon when he covets wealth.

But this party becomes a once in a lifetime chance for two souls to meet and with one look both Warwick and Avery recognize one another as mates. Warwick makes a deal with the Alpha--who can’t pay--that instead of the money, or taking everything Alpha Montgomery owns as he said he would when the contract was signed, he decides he wants Avery as a mate and three businesses from the Alpha. Say what? Yup, that’s what he wants and while Avery’s dad may be an Alpha, he’s spineless and agrees to trade his son.

He was in this position thanks to his father’s carelessness— and that was the nicest way he could put it. On the other hand, watching his father trade him off to pay his debt was disturbing. It hurt, plain and simple. He didn’t deserve this— no one did.

Avery’s dad is an ass, plain and simple. He tells his son he either agrees to become Warwick’s mate or be kicked out of his pack. I mean, WTF dad? It’s a terrible situation to be in, though arranged marriages seem to be the norm with these werewolves. It hurt to watch Avery be treated like nothing more than a possession to his family which brings us to the dragon business. Warwick is a powerful and very old dragon who loves his hoard above all. He is also a possessive man when he realizes Avery is his mate and though he adores his hoard, Avery to Warwick is not a possession. So yeah. There is that.

Now I have to say that while Avery knows instantly that Warwick is his mate and Warwick knows Avery is his, the story doesn’t play on the fated mate trope and that bugged me. I loved fated/true mates to no end. You are already suspending reality when you read a shifter romance and getting fated mates allows you to forgive anything that would normally case a Scooby Doo head tilt because you know the deal. They can’t help themselves when it comes to how they feel, how fast they fall and how bad they want to fuck. But these two, while showing signs of the trope they never speak of it to anyone. It sucked that Avery was traded for a debt owed but at the same time, dude you found your true mate and isn’t that kinda cool? Huh? Anyway, that bugged me because there are things that happen that some might find insta-esque but really falls under the fated/true mate deal. Okay. Rant over.

I truly enjoyed the book, grumble aside. Avery is ridiculously adorable in his wolf form and his reaction to seeing Warwick as a dragon the first time was more than I could have asked for. These two complement each other in the best ways and the twist on the mating rituals was fun and hell sexy. The mating itself got all sorts of hot and I have one line highlighted with the note, “Yes Daddy Dragon” because it was totally appropriate.

[…] as a child he’d often dreamed about a white knight in shining armor rescuing him from the drudgery of his life. No one needed to know that in those fantasies, he saw himself living in a castle like the proverbial prince in a fairy tale. Instead of a white knight riding to his rescue, he got the dragon willing to take him flying.

Dragon’s Hoard is a fun and fluffy romance that plays on the classic dragon and his hoard lore with a twist. This romance read like a sorta fairy tale with the hopeless romantic Omega who is sheltered and basically locked away in the Pack House tower until his knight in scaly dragon form comes to his rescue. Avery needed to be rescued by Warwick from the life his detached parents had planned for him and in true Pretty Woman fashion, Avery rescues Warwick right back.

Nothing happens in this book. Insta-love, mating, boom done. I skimmed the last 40% because I still hoped that some conflict would arise. I would have taken anything but no, nothing happens. Avery's father gets away with being an irresponsible asshole and everything is lovey dovey. Yawn...

Because nothing else happened I got annoyed at little mistakes like Avery saying he couldn't live without internet and a cellphone while being a hundred years old. Dude, you lived most of your live without a cellphone and internet. Actually, now that I think about it that was also something that annoyed me a lot; Avery acting like he was a twentysomething and not a hundred year old supernatural being. Yes, he was supposedly brought up very protected but by his own accounts he went out and dated some guys and his father said he was raised as a 'modern' werewolf.

Please don’t get your pitchforks out

So, before I rated this book I wanted to see if I was the only one that wasn’t in love with this book. Well, out of all my GR friends, sadly I am alone lol. This book had basically no conflict IMO. What little there was, was resolved within what seemed was my next breath. I felt it was too wordy with lots of details about clothes, food and other things that were not needed/boring. That IMO took up space where an actual plot could go. I honestly felt like the book could of read: Alpha Montgomery defaults on his loan with the dragon Warrick. When he goes to collect he finds out his mate is the alpha’s son Avery. Avery agrees to become his mate. They mate, they both have mating marks and they are happy. The end.

Ok, what did I read: alpha werewolf needs a lot of money, gets it from a dragon and when the dragon after a century comes to collect it with interest he doesn't have it, but he has an omega son who turns out is the mate of said dragon, dragon and omega mate, enjoy the dragons wealth and some of his incredible abilities, then HEA on top of the dragon's hoard, end.

Straight-forward, no distractions or loop ways. Suppose I knew what fluffy sweetness to expect and that's what I got, nothing more, nothing less. Wouldn't have minded to see more world-building, though.

A Joyfully Jay review.

There was an attempt in Dragon’s Hoard to create an interesting approach to dragon shifters. Unfortunately, the idea behind the dragon shifters never quite came together for me in this book. A lot of things didn’t quite come together for me in this book.

First there’s Warwick, an ancient and impossibly powerful being who serves as a loan shark to the paranormal community. As an absolute alpha powerful enough to cow other alphas, he should have oozed personality and strength. Instead, as we see from his chapters, everything has to be explained patiently and pointedly and he poses and postures. He comes across more pompous than powerful and more obnoxious than charming.

Next up is Avery, the spoiled and unpleasant young omega. He is an omega, as is marked by his coloring. Omegas are spoiled and petted because, if they aren’t, they’d sulk and snap and sulk… which Avery does even while refusing to believe he acts like an omega. We’re informed twice that omegas have paler coloring — blonde hair and golden hazel eyes — but Avery thinks his coloring is an abnormality. Perhaps because he doesn’t want to be an omega? Or resents being an omega? Much of his thoughts on the nature of omegas are contemptuous and sneering, even though, based on his description of them — spoiled, lazy, used to the finest things in life — I can’t tell that Avery is any different. Except he has a job… sort of, a job he had to make his father to give him. Perhaps knowing his father wanted an alpha son — or even just a stronger son — has made Avery insecure and defensive, and being treated as an omega has taught him that sulking and sniping are the ways he’s expected to behave. It makes him unpleasant and tiring and he comes across as a moody twenty-something (or younger). However, the author makes it clear that Avery is one hundred years old. I don’t know why. His age or lack thereof neither adds nor detracts from the story, but in using it — in stating that Avery is 100 years old — it makes his behavior even more childish and wincing.

3 stars. Super cute and fluffy and adorable. I'd been seeing this book around and those are mainly the words used to describe it. They're very accurate.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I was expecting to honestly. An Omega Wolf who is the mate of a freaking Dragon? Um, hell yes, sign me up for that! It's as great as it sounds honestly. Both characters, Avery (the sassy, snarky Omega) and Warwick (the badass, sweet Dragon) are really likable and I thought their relationship was really cute. They're both great characters who stand well on their own but work even better together. I appreciated that they talked and got to know each other before I even got to get to the smut.

I'm only giving this three stars because this had so much potential to be amazing. I think this would've benefitted from being a longer novel because things are definitely rushed story wise. I wanted just a little bit more time with these characters and watching them grow together and I would've loved it. As is, it's still really good and the writing is pretty good as well. I just wanted more.

Overall, I'd recommend if you're looking for something short and sweet.

this was a really solid concept and i'm a sucker for these types of books.

warwick was broody and demanding, but very soft for avery. as typical with this genre, the romance was very love-at-first-sight. i think it would have been better with some tension between warwick and avery, but to be completely honest, i read these books for the dynamic anyway so it doesn't really matter that much.

m.a. church is a new-to-me author. her strong suits seem to be characterization. i really liked both of the mcs and i feel like i was able to get a pretty good grasp of the supporting characters as well. of course, this is something that seems obvious - a writer must have good characterization, but i wasn't expecting it to this extent after reading the first few pages.

and what i mean by that is that church has a very narrative writing style. there were a lot of info dumps and there were a lot of moments the writing felt a little weak. but the plot and characters were amazing, and that's really what i think ended up saving this book for me.

i'm really interested to check out her newer books to see how her writing has grown.
