Bisco Hatori is a Japanese manga artist. Bisco Hatori is a pseudonym; she states that the name has special meaning to her. She has worked for such magazines as LaLa. Her manga debut was A Moment of Romance in LaLa DX. Her first series was Millennium Snow. However, the comedy Ouran High School Host Club is her breakout hit.
Bisco Hatori of Ouran High School Host Club fame has a new series! Ranmaru is a super-pessimist who ruins everything, but hopes to change that in college. When he runs afoul of one of the many movie clubs while filming on campus, he encounters a mysterious drama group, the Art Squad! Forced out of his comfort zone in the most dramatic way possible, Ranmaru is finally able to use those artistic skills that make him feel so inferior back home. Along the way he comes to admire each member of his new family?!
Behind the Scenes!! vol 6 totally wowed me!! I've found myself loving this manga more and more each volume I read. I was already a Bisco Hatori fan, but this was so different from Ouran Host Club. That was all fluffy extremes that showcased the differences of social classes. It had an unconventional heroine and a reverse harem feel. Behind the Scenes!! on the other hand was about a group of friends who have the common interest in crafts and applying hands on skills to other people's work. It wasn't about the limelight, its about what you can do to support another person's vision. And the hero is soooo conventional! I have really come to love Ranmaru and to see him blossom in this volume was so incredible...
The art in Behind the Scenes!! vol 6 wowed me because Ranmaru has seriously matured!! In fact in one frame he looks remarkably like Goda (whom both Ranmaru and I admire like he's a king!!) I believe this was a very deliberate choice on the hand of the mangaka as we see Ranmaru harnessing the same passion that has always impressed him about Goda. In this volume there are also a ton of very extreme emotions that the characters go through and I just loved how they came out in contrast with other softer frames. If it can be believed Bisco Hatori just keeps getting better and better as an artist.
It's the story though that totally won my heart... I have loved Goda from the moment he saw all that was special about a freshman who believes everything bad that happens is his fault. I could totally see why this art squad willingly slaved away for him even if his personality is a bit extreme... okay extremely harsh! I too wanted to be his minion!! And now here in Behind the Scenes!! vol 6 we learn about the hurt and fear that this incredible leader and human being has held in his heart. It's kept him from getting truly close to others and we see Ranmaru step up and become the person he's always had inside himself to help his mentor, hero, and rival Goda.
To see this pessimistic guy stick with it all through Behind the Scenes!! vol 6 and use everything he could think of to change the mind of a stubborn man just melted my heart!! I didn't even think about these changes effecting the romance too but I was so pleased that it did. When you're spending all of your time holding yourself together the idea of putting yourself out there for another person to wound is horrific! When you face your fears you can face all kinds of other changes too. It's been an incredible journey with the art squad and I'm sad to see their story wrapping up but I'm loving the unexpected direction and can't wait to get to that end in volume 7...
Behind the Scenes!! vol 6 absolutely blew my mind. I was so excited by how much Ranmaru grew in one year with the art squad and then to see him step up to help Goda... YES! YES! YES! It's hard not to make grabby hands for volume 7... but I wouldn't miss the conclusion to Ranmaru, Goda, Ruka, Izumi, Soh or Maasa and Tomu's journey!! I hope it ends like I want it to...

The emotional depth in these books always amazes me, and this one just keeps it ramping up. Can't wait to see how all these threads come together in the last volume!
Ranmaru and Soh are both working hard to better themselves and for their crushes. Poor Soh is after a guy who doesn't really intend to have a relationship, who's rather unattainable. Ranmaru likes Ruka, but he believes that she likes Goda. Discovering that she's agreed to an arranged marriage after college gives him new determination, though. It's an interesting theme in both relationships, really. Ruka and Izumi have both resigned themselves to their fates. They've decided to stop fighting it, and take what little they can have for themselves. Ruka fought for school, and she's made herself accept whatever her family wants for her after that. The real surprise in this volume, though, comes when Ranmaru discovers Goda's secret. It spurs a whole new side of Ranmaru, who starts persisting and even annoying Goda till he wears him down. And it's a surprisingly touching reason, too, what Goda did that had an impact on so many, and his reaction to it. For a final plot line to the series, I really appreciate this being it. I'm really excited to see how it all wraps up, and am wondering how it's going to happen for them all.
So Soh and Ranmaru almost made me cry at that one point and that took me completely by surprise. I have to say, I'm not nearly as invested in this series as I expected to be when I went into it. I absolutely adored Ouran and I know it's not fair to compare but I honestly don't think I would finish this series if I wasn't already invested in the author's work. I feel like I just can't care about these characters as much as I want to, and at the end of this volume it felt like I had finally gotten to the point where I could!!
Soh loves Izumi but he won't return her feelings because of his amnesia. Ranmaru loves Ruku but Ruku loves Goda but Goda loves crafts... and movies. Romance triangles with lots of growth from many of the characters both emotionally and physically. Seriously Ranmaru had a growth spurt during the time skip between Year 1 and Year 2.
Ranmaru has a crush on Ruka and Soh has a crush on Izumi. Ruka can't return Ranmaru's because her family is forcing her into an arranged marriage after she graduates. Izumi suffers from amnesia after an accident he had when he was younger and can't remember his past. Ranmaru finds out that Goda quit directing after the death of his grandfather.

You know how there are boutique stores that specialize in a few products or a non-mainstream movie that only seem to get praise from a few and are not known by the masses? This is what this series is like for me. The storytelling and how each piece is actually part of the larger whole. It all flows so nicely, which is amazing for this story is being told only in 7 volumes! Yet, it does not feel rush. It's a relatively short manga that seems to be doing everything right. With that said, let's dive into this specific volume.
The Film One of the things that is brilliant about this manga is the film about the robot. We already learned that Goda directed it. In this volume, we learn that film also touched another member of the Art Squad. This film helps to ground some of the elements of the story.
Crushed Hearts Oh, this part was a bit heartbreaking! Yet, they will come back stronger.
The Student Becomes the Master Ranmaru steps up here. We really see who he can become when he staves off the pessimism and the low self-esteem. We also see a different side of Goda. Goda appears more human in this. Until now, he always have seemed cool and confident. Now we see has insecurities as much as anybody else. Yet, guess who tries to slap some sense into him?
"Goda...you have the ability to touch others. I was never comfortable anywhere...But then...I realized...The world is a big place. So there must be...A place for me somewhere. Everything Came Together...When I found Out Who Made That Movie. So No Matter What...I Want To See...What kind of movie...That guy will make NOW."
Crushed Hearts Part II I have mix feelings about this part. On one hand, I am like "Come on, Hawkeye! Tell Margaret how you really feel!" On the other hand, I am like "He is further going to be crushed by this if Hawkeye actually gives into the feelings!"
Verdict: Let's see how this all get resolved in the last volume!
By far my favorite manga in the series so far. Omg I’m so sad it’s coming to an end up I definitely recommend to everyone who loved Ouran. I like the theater elements and it gives the same vibe and homey feeling as OHSHC 😍💗
