ZOOM: SPACE ADVENTURE is a fun journey through outer space with Ava. Ava is going on a space adventure, and she first stops at the international space station, making some repairs, before going to the moon to collect scientific samples, then traveling to Mars and viewing the planets in the Solar System. She then heads back home in time for supper.

This board book features plenty of bright colors, cute illustrations, a cat that accompanies Ava on each page, and lots of cut-outs. There is also a fun pop-up on the second to last page to add some extra fun for toddlers.

What I loved: I really love that Ava is a girl of color and astronaut! There are some fun facts about the Solar System in here, and the fun illustrations and cut-outs will certainly delight toddlers. This is longer than the typical board book in terms of number of pages, making it ideal for toddlers who are advancing in terms of reading level, while still keeping the pages thick and easy to turn. The text is pretty simple and certainly keeps it at a young level and making the book move quickly.

What left me wanting more: As a small thing, I would have liked some more facts and information on pages to go even a little deeper. This keeps to the basics, which will be great for some young readers, but can be repeat information for readers who already have a bunch of space books. I think the length gives it more potential to dive a little deeper, but the text does stay simple for short attention spans.

Final verdict: Overall, this is a fun space adventure with delightful cut-outs, full page illustrations, and a great main character. Highly recommend for toddlers who want to learn more about space!

Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.

Young readers and listeners will enjoy peeking through the cutouts in various shapes on this board book's pages and following Ava and her cat as they blast off into space. The opening page shows Ava holding a model rocket in her hand as she plays in her bedroom, surrounding by planets hanging from the ceiling and various space paraphernalia. The countdown from 5 to blastoff begins, and off she and her feline friend go, passing by the moon, visiting the space station, stopping by the Moon to collect samples, and traveling through the solar system. The final page shows Ava looking through her telescope, having never moved from her bedroom except in her imagination. This is a fun depiction of how one child imagines space travel. The only thing I didn't care for was the shapes used for the countdown. I found them hard to read, which might be a challenge for a young reader. If the book were being shared with a child, an adult reader would have no trouble with the images. Although pragmatic individuals will argue that Ava could never have traveled so far into space, it's still fun to watch her adventures.

I mean, you give me an astronaut cat and I'm pretty much happy.

But this book had a bit of everything!

The series of cutout pages at the front was text-free but really interesting. It reminded me of Star Trek, looking through the decks and panels and all that before launch.

Then we see the space station and a moon buggy taking samples. So sciencey! (And ASTRONAUT CAT.)
Then we travel through the solar system, including a stop to the Curiosity rover on Mars and through the asteroid belt. (As a millennial, I will never get over the demotion of Pluto though.)

Then there's a pop-up supernova!

Finally Ava is home and planning a new adventure!

A super fun book for any space fan!

I picked this book up at Costco for Lily. Girl goes to space? Yes please, sign me the hell up.

Lily loves the number-shaped pages counting down to liftoff.

Her attention span has increased enough now to listen to the words and not just focus on the supernova explosion page while I make exploding mouth-sounds.

She likes to put the book on the floor and stomp on the planets while Dada says "stomping on Neptune! Stomping on Jupiter!" etc.

R.I.P. Pluto. My daughter truly belongs to a new generation.

A very cool board book, I especially enjoyed the pages that were shaped like numbers that counted down from 5. You see a girl travel to Mars and back in this fun story. Readers who would enjoy this book are those who like stories that empower girls, book about outer space, and books with gaps that let you see through to the next page.
