Waylon Jenkins has a problem. Well, he's got a few of them. The ghost of Betsy Ross lives in his house, he's pretty sure his favorite client is the victim of ongoing domestic violence, and he's been roped into helping the police investigate a series of murders.
And his penis fell off in the shower this morning. He needs a new one, but none of his friends are willing to donate theirs to the cause.
In case it isn't obvious by now, Waylon Jenkins is a zombie.
He's also one of the most highly respected and in-demand makeup artists in Hollywood, and that keeps him busy, no matter how dead he is. But now he needs to find out who's committing a string of murders, and make sure nobody hurts Mitzi (one name only), one of his most faithful (and famous) clients.
He also needs a new penis.
Pluck & Cover is the first in the Zombie Cosmetologist Novellas, a new series by J.D. Blackrose, author of The Soul Wars and The Devil's Been Busy.
J.D. Blackrose loves all things storytelling and celebrates great writing by posting about it on her website, www.slipperywords.com. She has published The Soul Wars series and the Monster Hunter Mom series, both through Falstaff Books, as well as numerous short stories.
When not writing, Blackrose lives with three children, an orange cat, her husband and a full-time job in Corporate Communications. She’s fearful that so-called normal people will discover exactly how often she thinks about wicked fairies, nasty wizards, homicidal elevators, treacherous forests, and the odd murder, even when she is supposed to be having coffee with a friend. As a survival tactic, she has mastered the art of looking interested. She credits her parents for teaching her how to ask questions, and in lieu of facts, how to make up answers.
Pluck and Cover by J.D. Blackrose Zombie Cosmetologist series #1. Paranormal mystery and comedy. Waylon Jenkins is a zombie. Alive. Working as a cosmetologist in Hollywood. Somehow, he finds himself in the middle of a police investigation.
Zany and ridiculous, this novella is entertaining to the max. And a little X-rated. Not with sex. Rather, sex-less. Zombies lose their heartbeat, their functioning blood flow etc. Waylon has lost…well, you can read the back of the book. Needless to say, this book is a bit strange and so much fun. I absolutely will continue this series.
If you are looking for a mystery short story that will make you laugh then look no further than this book. The premise is wacky, the characters are plucky, and good overcomes bad in the end.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I opened to the first page, but finding a zombie concerned about his manhood was not one of them! And then to have Betsy Ross sewing it back on? You know that the rest of the book is going to a scream, and not in fear but in laughter.
This story moves at a fast pace and there are multiple storylines that somewhat merge together near the end, or at least several of them do. The characters have interesting backstories but we don't find those out until closer to the end of the story. I think some of it could have been dropped in earlier because it would have made more sense or at least the reader would have a better understanding of Waylon and Early. I found it interesting that the police had no issue with Waylon being a zombie. But at the same time, it made him a more likely suspect.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and want to know more about the characters, how they came to be the way they are and how they came together (although we find out how Early and Waylon know each other) and will this company that is producing zombies succeed? I also expect that the next book will have just as much humor in it and will be an enjoyable read.
I listened to the Soundbooth version of this book. It’s a full cast production that immerses you in the story. All of the actors did an excellent job and I loved it.
JD Blackroses’ story about a Zombie cosmetologist is hysterical. So many funny lines and it’s a bit bawdy. The main character (I’m awful about remembering names) lost his penis more than once. 😂 There’s not exactly a cliffhanger but I certainly want to continue listening to the rest of this series.
Aaah! Zombies!! is one of my favorite zombie comedy movies ever due, in large part, to the "it fell off" bit so I knew that I would love this story when it started with a similar humor. Betsy Ross's ghost being on hand to stitch Waylon up as needed was an unexpected delight. The zombie lore in this wasn't perfect, but it was so unique from what I've seen in movies or on shows or read in books. I feel like I need Waylon's zombie origin story immediately.
This was written in such an addictive way. I just couldn't stop reading it. I loves the humor, the story, the ideas, the lore, the horrific aspects, the tease of romance and just plain everything about this. I have no idea how this was originally recommended to me, but if I ever remember they're going on my list for recs I trust. This was so much fun and I'd love to find more gems like it.
I didn't think it was possible to find another fresh approach to the zombie story, but Blackrose has done it. Funny and fascinating with a main character you can't help but love, even when he is literally goign to pieces. Somebody should send this to Brendan Fraser's agent.
I loved everything about this book. The characters were delightful. Waylon was an interesting zombie and the take on zombies in general differed from what most might know from popular media.
It's a funny, quick read. There's a zombie makeup artist, some intrigue, a missing penis, a little kablooie, all the stuff you need for a comedy romp with your new favorite zombie cosmetologist.
"Pluck & Cover" by J.D. Blackrose is book one in the "Zombie Cosmetologist" series. I laughed so hard at the opening scene. The rest of the book had similar humor, and going along with the characters to figure out who was doing the dismemberment was a hilarious ride. I liked that this book was about zombies and had a little bit of a mystery to it. I listened to this book on Soundbooth and enjoyed the actors that read the book. I will definitely move on to book two in this series.
Another delight from JD Blackrose. Made me LOL three times; once, I had to book down until I composed myself.
Her characters are so real, and the real-life solutions to the problems just feel natural. Okay, you might be asking, how can a Zombie Cosmetologist to Hollywood Stars be "real" - I DON'T KNOW - but he IS!!!! I could see running into Waylon Jenkins in day-to-day life and sitting down for a talk on a park bench (with suitable hat and sunscreen).
When a book opens with Betsy Ross stitching on the main character's ...err...part, you know you've got a winner. The book is fast-paced and has a great cast of characters. It will keep you reading and laughing through whatever else is going on.
This book has one of the most delightfully wild premises I’ve read in a while. You’re dead, sure, but that doesn’t stop you from being a wildly successful cosmetologist to the stars. Life—or, well, afterlife—is glamorous and thriving… until you find yourself tangled in a murder accusation. The story kicks off with a shocking, can’t-look-away opening that instantly pulled me in, and from that point on, it was an addictive ride.
This book strikes such a fun balance between witty humor, unexpected twists, and just enough mystery to keep you guessing. The characters have that perfect blend of over-the-top charm and real emotional depth, making it easy to root for them (even when they’re in a mess). I went with the audiobook and loved how the narration brought the sass, the sparkle, and the suspense to life—highly recommend experiencing it that way if you can.
Waylon Jenkins is a make-up artist in Hollywood. He’s also a zombie but that’s not common knowledge. His secretary is a ghost named Betsy Ross who sews new parts back on his body when he loses one and the tenant in his gate house is a really really old doctor who made him into a zombie in the first place. When the local sheriff has some murder victims but no murderer he thinks it might be Waylon. Because, you know, Waylon is a zombie and the victims were missing some body parts. Anyway, the sheriff doesn’t believe Waylon’s declaration of innocence so he makes him help find the murderer to prove said innocence. So Waylon is now a consultant to the sheriff’s department. Sort of. In any case, Waylon actually does need a body part since his penis fell off in the shower, but that’s neither here nor there.
This is not a story to be taken seriously even though it’s a murder mystery. I love Waylon. He’s a fairly well-fleshed out character. Hehe See what I did there? *cough* Anyway, even though the plot is shaky and the villain hokey, this is still an enjoyable read and a great way to pass the time. I’m not usually a fan of zombie stories (they are way down my list of enjoyable paranormal characters), but Waylon is funny, has an unusual job that I’ve not yet seen in any story, and he’s really old, so I’m going to read the next installment in this new series by the new-to-me author and see where it takes me.
Such fun! If you weren't won over by the mere concept of a zombie cosmetologist, then give the first chapter a glance and I'm sure you'll keep reading. A great mix of adventure and comedy, with an original take on zombies that I really enjoyed. These aren't your mindless shamblers or brain-hungry monsters, but something entirely different.
I've already got the second one on my kindle and am looking forward to reading more of Waylon, Betsy, and the rest of the interesting cast of characters.
This is not your mother’s zombie story – no flesh-eating, mindless walking dead monsters to be found. Pluck and Cover is an incredibly original take on the zombie genre. Waylon Jenkins, zombie cosmetologist to the stars, is a fully functioning member of society, all be it one with body parts that disintegrate and fall off. The novella is filled with humor, action, and emotion. I recommend this to anyone looking for a fun and unique urban fantasy. I can’t wait to read more about Waylon.
Okay I picked this up just for the zombie cosmetologist part. It was definitely an intriguing story idea. I was actually pleasantly surprised that the story had more depth from the characters than I expected. While some of the situations are definitely humorous, how the characters felt and revelations they had were also evident.
Loved meeting Waylon Jenkins and love that Besty Ross is his ghost executive assistant! It was a great story with interesting twist and turns. The information on how zombies work was intriguing. Love all the adventures that Waylon just seems to fall into! I enjoyed the intertwining stories and it was a fun read. Looking forward to Waylon’s next adventure.
OMG! The blurb says it all. I was so shocked, and started laughing, when the first sentence of this audio book was about a missing penis! Waylon is a zombie and famous makeup artist. When bodies start showing up with missing body part, Waylon now needs to solve the mystery. The story is a hoot, and I love the secondary characters, especially Betsy Ross.
This is an amusing short read! Well written, funny situations & overall a good fun quick read! I did really enjoy it, something a little different to my normal stories but well worth it! I do recommend this, a little like a "cozy" zombie book!
Pluck and Cover by JD Blackrose is a fun, fast-paced read with a sharp sense of humor. The main character is clever and tough, and I loved how magic and mystery mixed together. It’s an entertaining read that kept me turning the pages and smiling the whole way through.
This is a great story with murder, mayhem, and humor. Waylon is a zombie so when bodies show up with missing parts he is suspect #1. In trying to figure out what’s happening a whole lot of drama gets uncovered. The Sound Booth audio production was so much fun to listen to. #CMCon26
This book was hilarious the entire way through. It opened strong and had me chuckling all the way until the end. Not your average zombie story, and I’m looking forward to reading the next book.
Highly enjoyable, snarky, brilliant characters, and actually having some great set ups for the mystery. There is some huge ideas for zombiology that actually were new and well thought through. I am highly looking forward to the next one! Currently available through the Soundbooth Theatre app for free as an audiobook!
