Empowered #2

The Goblin War

Rate this book
After Aric Bramble is captured by his own people and sentenced to death for helping their sworn enemy, Alyssum and his brothers are left to rescue him alone. Getting him back won’t end the war with the Gobel. His rescue brings the fight forward.

Returning home, after escaping to New York, with new information—information contradicting everything Alyssum has been raised to believe, she switches gears in search of a solution to the problems facing the Gremalians and the Gobel.

A way to live together without war.

But Mother Earth isn't willing to play along. Both sides use of copper to enhance their powers has thrown off the natural balance and the Earth is starting to react. Earthquakes and tsunamis aren't things the people of Michigan have experienced—until now.

The climate changes push Alyssum to find the peaceful solution for both sides, to bring the people together and find her way back to Jensen.

When a possible war threatened to break out between the Gremalian and the Gobel races, Alyssum Bracken attempted to track down Heath Sorrel, now known as Jensen Burkhardt, who might have certain powers that could stop the war and bring peace. She found him, but now Aric Bramble, a Gobel who had since become her best friend, was captured by his own people who felt he had betrayed them by teaming up with the Gremalians to help Alyssum in her quest for peace. Once the Gobel got the information they wanted from Aric, they would kill him unless Alyssum and Aric’s two brothers could rescue him, Jensen having refused to help. Kale knew a way in to where Aric was held, so they followed him to check on Aric and make a plan. Aric had figured Elliot Moss, the Gobel leader, was delaying taking action in order to lure the brothers Stone, Kale, and Lake back, knowing Alyssum would likely make a move soon.

They almost made it to rescue Aric but were spotted and had to run. Alyssum used her power of controlling electricity to throw balls of energy at them. But the Gobel could control nature and the trees whipped at her face and body. Even stones started to fly through the air at them. They escaped to the SUV, but a tree attacked the vehicle and Alyssum was thrown, waking up alone and seriously injured.

Alyssum tried walking on the road, but she was in bad shape. A human girl saw her in her headlights and got her to the car. Alyssum insisted she take her home where her people were gathered. Stone helped her when she came through the door; her ex-boyfriend Jensen was there and looked angry. She called to Jensen to ask him to protect the human who helped her, and he agreed as she was carried by Stone to Fern for healing the massive damage to her body.

Aric is still imprisoned and facing death. Can they possibly rescue him now after their unsuccessful attempt? Alyssum discovers things that challenge everything she thought she knew. What can she do now to find a solution to the problems facing the Gremalians and the Gobel races to bring them together? And the excessive mining of the copper by their people is having dangerous repercussions on the land. Is there any hope left?

This was an incredibly good book that kept the reader’s attention. The tense story line moves the story along quickly as it feels like everything is closing in. The book is well-written and the main characters are likable. This is a book the reader can definitely appreciate. Grab your copy and join in the escalating adventure!

I've read many of Heather Young-Nichols' books and enjoy her style of writing. In this series she ventures into the supernatural world with the Gremalians and Gobels. Alyssum is a feisty and determined heroine - determined to uncover the truth about Heath (Jensen) and in her efforts uncovers way more than she ever expected. I also enjoyed the dynamics between her, Jensen (recently discovered he's Gremalian) and Aric (Gobel). There are twists and turns, danger, heartache, betrayal, determination, regret, hope...so many emotions. The story made me laugh and cry and hope for them to work it all out. I was fortunate enough to be gifted with advanced copies of this and the Goblin War so I was able to go right from one to the next. The Goblin War was just as engaging as the Gremlin Prince. You'll want to read these in order. Looking forward to seeing what Heather Young-Nichols comes up with next!

This story led me on a merry chase. First, as Alyssum tries to find a way to rescue her best friend before his own people can put him to death. Then, while she tries to find a solution to keep the Gremalians and the Gobel from annihilating one another, if Mother Earth doesn’t do the job first. There were so many fantastic twists and details in this book, it was easy for me to get swept up in the story. I love Alyssum even though her ‘leap before looking’ life strategy often left me wanting to tear my hair out. Really, I loved the whole cast of characters in this book. I’m sorry it’s over already and I hope that we get the chance to come back and check in with the Gremalians and the Gobel again in the future.

This is book 2 of the Empowered series and wow what a fantastic story I enjoyed it immensely and it’s a continuation from book 1. Alyssum tried to rescue Aric a Gobel but he was captured by his own people they thought that he betrayed them by trying to stop the war that was coming and being with other traitors, but to no avail and now Aric is sentenced to death. Alyssum barely escaped she was saved by a human female but Alyssum didn’t get out unscathed she was badly injured so she was taken to Fern to try and heal her injuries. Wow what a fantastic story there’s action, adventure, danger, twists and turns, suspense and so much more to keep you entertained and turning the pages and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.

The war is getting worse and when Alric is being caught by his clan he is treated as a traitor. Efforts to free him escalate the war even more, when a new player comes in - not a "gremlin", but a human woman. She becomes one of the key players. But too much use of energy creates imbalance and Mother Earth is unhappy.
The book is the second book in the series and has a kind of solution at the end. It is difficult to read, if you are not familiar with the first book.
Well written and action packed in addition to a conflicted romance, it keeps the reader well entertained.

This story gave me all the answers to my questions from the first book The Gremlin Prince. It had plenty of action and intrigue.
Again this is not your typical faerie story that I have read.
I look forward to reading more from this author.

Audio Review:
The Goblin War (The Empired Series Book 2) continues where book one left off. I loved the first book in this ya urban fantasy series & this one I loved just as much. The unparalleled synopsis of war between Gremlins & Gobels offers a fresh & new concept to paranormal creatures. Alyssum is a snarky & witty heroine that you can relate to. A great set of supporting characters that add a perfect touch to the story. With a bit of drama & angst a real page turner novel that will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time. With a perfectly done ending epilogue to this remarkable series. I'm sad to see it end as I fell in love with the story & characters. I highly recommend listening to this ya urban fantasy novel & series as it is fantastic.

Sommer Hines was the perfect choice to narrate this audio. Her inflection fit what I would picture as Alyssum's character. Her tone was smooth and perfect pace. She brought the characters and their story to reality.

Alyssum wants to save her friend Aric, even though his people (Gobel) and her people (Gremalians) are at war. She finds herself arguing with people she though would support her, but she is strong willed and will do what she feels is right. Can she stop the war and save her friend? What might the cost be? I enjoyed this book, I liked getting some of those burning questions answered, the play between characters, the troubles/drama/dangers of this intriguing tale and seeing what happens between Jensen and Alyssum.

Book two and Alyssum must try to save her best friend Aric before his people destroy him. The adventure is fraught with danger, drama, twists and turns and with incredible world building you find yourself sucked back into this world. With fantastic character growth, the journey is exciting as a truce between the gremlins and goblins is hunted for and I look forward to what comes next!

Alyssum is back and on a mission to save her best friend. And along the way are surprises, twists, intrigue, war, and figuring out if she will forgive Jensen. Lots of fun and easy to get sucked int the story to see what all happens. Made me laugh and groan and want to slap a few characters but made for a fun read.

Alyssum and Jensen resolve their issues and while doing so brings a truce between the gremlins and the goblins. Lots of twists and turns that keep you flipping the page.

The second book in The Empowered Series. You must read The Gremlin Prince first.

Page-turning paranormal action!

Alyssum is on a mission to save Aric and if Jensen won’t go along then there is no relationship! It may not matter anyway because she and Aric’s brothers may not make it back alive.

This is an excellent addition to the series! It’s an exciting read with a surprise ending. I received a free copy but my review is honest and voluntary.
