Set in the English West Midlands in the stormy summer of 1941, Justine Page sets out to find the truth about her lover, her friends and her town. Following an air raid on the small industrial settlement she has moved to for war work, Justine’s world is turned upside down by bombs, missing people and revelations that throw her whole life into a new focus. Her mission is to find out where everyone has gone, but once this truth begins to reveal itself, she has to consider her mistaken knowledge of the world around her.
Helped by her friends and a company of Australian soldiers, she uncovers a world hidden beneath the skin of the small town that changes everything she has believed in, until now.
Everyone has a secret; some secrets are deadly and destructive. When these secrets come to pass it is inevitable that someone will get hurt.
This thriller has colour, humor and romance as well as homicide, conspiracy and a little aboriginal scout called Jarli. So there is something for everyone. The book contains strong language.
This book is demanding of the reader, dancing as it does between the stories of a fascinating and diverse ensemble of characters. Powerfully rooted in place, the action takes place over a short period of time in which the lives of everyone in a small town are overturned. We are taken into some curious places and spaces, the pace rarely letting up. I was eager to discover what would happen to the characters I was rooting for, and what would become of the town.
It was also fascinating reading a self-published first work of fiction, it has a visceral edge which I found refreshing. The story is based on diligent researched and offered me an insight into some history which I was totally unaware of.
Afraid this was garbage. Aside from several grammatical errors and the awful habit of ending too many sentences with question marks, the story was very difficult to follow. Scenes change without warning from one paragraph to another leaving the reader having to backtrack to work out what’s going on. I had great trouble staying interested.
