Fans of Brandon Mull and James Riley will love this heart-pounding second novel in the action-packed, accessible fantasy adventure series Order of the Majestic, which Booklist called a “delight!”
Joey Kopecky and his friends, Shazad and Leanora, have the weight of the world on their shoulders. As the new Order of the Majestic, it is their responsibility to keep magic alive and free for all, and to fight the influence of the Invisible Hand, a sinister group of magicians intent on rounding up the world’s remaining magical items and keeping everything to themselves. It’s a vital mission and a sacred duty, but the Invisible Hand has been playing this game—and playing it well—for centuries. Joey, Shazad, and Leanora are still learning their powers—and lately, they can’t seem to agree on anything.
But all of that changes when Fate taps them on the shoulder, and puts the Secret Map of the World in their hands. Together, Joey and his friends strike off on a tour of hidden magical realms, trying to find a lost kingdom that could hold the key to a new age of magic. Hunted by the Invisible Hand every step of the way, they must reach their ultimate destination first, or risk delivering the world’s most powerful source of magic energy right into their enemy’s hands.
Matt Myklusch is the author of 8 middle-grade novels, including the JACK BLANK, ORDER OF THE MAJESTIC, and the SEABORNE series. When he was a kid, he wanted to be a comic book penciller. That didn’t happen, but he never stopped drawing – and now he’s writing comic books! IMAGINE NATION, his new graphic novel series hits the shelves on January 7, 2025.
He lives in New Jersey with his wife and family, where he is always behind schedule on his next book.
I like the imagination of Mr. Myklusch. I think one of the biggest things I appreciated is that the whole premise of the book is the characters have to believe in magic for it to work. At one point their biggest fear is to lose their imaginations. Kids these days need to exercise their imaginations more and have to believe in things. This book picks up right after the last one finished, convenient for me that I just finished it. This kids must protect the Majestic from the bad guys and end up on another adventure to find new artifacts by jumping from one mystical place to another. There were a number of interesting twists including the final one a the end of the book. I look forward to the third book and seeing how everything ties together.
A lovely second installment in the Order of the Majestic series that sets our heroes up for even greater adventures to come.
Second books have a tendency to not live up to their predecessors, but Myklusch does a wonderful job of capturing all the magic of the first book and expanding upon it.
4.5. well worth reading. The 2nd book in magical series that has the wit of Percy Jackson with the magical realism of Harry Potter. The traveling road trip worked for the 2nd book and bridged to the final book. Looking forward to reading.
