The new, hilarious yuri comedy! Hime gets roped into working at a weird café where the waitresses pretend to be students at an all-girl boarding school. She's strangely taken with her partner Mitsuki, who's so kind to her in front of the customers. There's just one problem... Mitsuki really can't stand her!
EXCHANGES
After turning down Hime's early birthday gift, Mitsuki realizes she may have rejected her friend's good intentions along with it...and this wouldn't be the first time. On the big day, however, Mitsuki can't make it to Liebe Academy to celebrate, bedridden from a cold. So when Hime shows up at her door to check on her, Mitsuki makes a bold move to set the record straight. Taken aback by Mitsuki's earnestness, Hime finds it difficult to return to work. With the manager's arm healed, the salon finally has a full staff like before--so is there any reason for Hime to stay?
I do so enjoy this series when its characters and emotional stakes are on point. This volume was a good turnaround, and I can’t wait to see the drama to come!
Hime’s gift to Mitsuki didn’t go over so well, ie super terrible. Now, on the day of her own birthday celebrations, Mitsuki has been laid low by the dreaded manga cold.
With Hime playing nursemaid, the two get perilously close to actually communicating with each other. However, the shocking results of that conversation and Hime’s bombshell at the end of this book threaten to put this yuri on ice...*
In the afterword, the author mentions that problems scripting caused delays in this book and I can see why. From such a hackneyed plot line springs some of the rawest, truest moments in this series. This couldn’t have been easy to write.
Nothing expected happens during the cold storyline - instead, divested from the cafe and all its trappings, Hime and Mitsuki feel more real and human than ever. There is an inherent danger to letting somebody in and, conversely, to breaking down somebody’s walls. This story addresses both sides with aplomb.
Mitsuki has been incredibly harsh outside of work and it was fascinating to learn that she sees the persona she plays at work as an ideal she wants to be more like. It colors everything much differently and knocks Hime for a loop.
Hime, however, wants to know exactly how Mitsuki feels and why she’s been so mean to her. I love, love, love this style of monkey’s paw storytelling, where a character gets what they want and then some.
At first I was really annoyed that Mitsuki was taking so damn long to get the truth out, but I realized I was looking at this from the perspective of the reader of a yuri. It’s a total trap of thinking this would be easy and obvious - I know other yuri titles wrestle with this idea, but I have rarely, if ever, seen it done this well.
The author’s point is that knowing that you and the person you love are on completely different levels in terms of your affection is utter hell and the turmoil is writ large by Mitsuki’s expressions and her resistance to telling Hime the truth. It would never be as easy as some of these stories make it seem.
Then Hime demolishes Mitsuki’s barriers and Mitsuki is forced to acknowledge that while she wants to be kinder, her desire for Hime brings out some of her worst aspects (I think there is probably something to be said for a partner having a positive influence but this scene is not the time for that).
And then Mitsuki makes her intentions crystal clear and with so much of this series being focused on lies we tell ourselves, deceptions we project, and the facades we wear.... it’s ironic to see how much trouble the truth actually causes once work resumes.
You’ll probably want to shake Hime at the end of the book, but this kind of avoidance of anything too difficult has been her modus operandi forever (credit for how good the series has been at layering this in to everything). It’s the piano recital all over again and it’ll be interesting to see how she gets over this.
4 stars. Hmm, no, that cute short at the end gives it an extra half. And honestly, something this special, which has really bumped this series up in my estimation, deserves a full five for what it accomplishes and the difficulty of that feat.
*note: I am pretty certain I have used that joke before and apologize for the repetition, but I still think it’s a good line.
Oh my gosh, this volume was an emotional rollercoaster! Watching Yano finally express her true feelings and Hime's determination to break down Yano' walls was difficult yet rewarding. Yano's expressions really sold the emotional turmoil she was experiencing, and the multiple flashbacks while Hime read her letter was a nice touch.
But then, BUT THEN, we get Hime's announcement at the end of the volume. And I wanted to wring Hime's neck SO FUCKING BAD, I was SO PISSED. But at the same time, I'm SO FUCKING IMPRESSED with Miman's writing and characterization. Hime's decision is frustrating, but is so in keeping with her character it's frightening. Now I'm so damn curious to see what will happen next, but I have to wait til next year! Dammit, these release dates are killing me!
This is easily one of the best, well-written yuris I've ever read and I'm always floored by Miman's consistently high quality writing, art, and characterization. I cannot wait for more.
Every new volume I read of this series I get more addicted and yet somehow still more frustrated. Main character Hime can't stand when people don't like her so she'll do just about anything to make people think she's perfect, which drives me nuts. She's never being true to herself, which makes me feel bad for her, but she doesn't really care about that, which makes me annoyed by her. It's as if she doesn't deserve for people to like her which sets off a malfunction in my brain.
Perhaps worse still is that the characters who actually do know all about her attitude and behaviour are the ones who are the most in love with her. It always makes me want to scream but I can't stop reading.
As if this volume is aware of my conflicting opinions, it offers up a story that contains very little actual story, essentially being one conversation between Hime and Mitsuki when Mitsuki is sick at home, while also finally delivering major revelations and changes. Once again I am satisfied and not all at the same time while also being left with a cliffhanger that will surely have me grabbing the next volume the moment I can get my hands on it.
They finally kiss... but not all's well in wellsville, is it? And now... a departure?!?! Say it ain't so! Come on, man! These two SHOULD be together! Little-miss-perfect is running scared, isn't she? She knew big sister cared... but, still a shock to her. Now she runs, instead of looking inward at her own hidden feelings. Oh, the tangled webs we weave! Big sister is going to be hurt bad, I suspect. Gah. All this time waiting, just to end on another cliffhanger! God I love this series. Art, fantastic, the girls all look amazing. Dialogue, so true, so heartfelt. Characters, believable, likeable, relatable, loveable, admirable, adorable. Need I say more?
'Yuri Is My Job' vol 6 is an interesting pivot, as we get some confessions that have been a long time coming, but also this seems to push Hime back into the mask that she'd been wearing so long - I can't wait to see the next volume to get more of her thoughts and see what she's ending up choosing.
I got a humble bundle of queer manga and it had 14 volumes of this manga. I ended up binge reading 9 of them last night and this is going to be a review of the 9 as a whole because it's too hard to remember where one ends and another begins. I haven't read a lot of yuri manga (webtoon is a different story) and I've only read one other class S series (though I didn't know it at the time and learned what that is with this series) but I like this one so far. It's super cute. I like that the characters are flawed. There's angst and comedy and a delicious slow burn. It's basically Ouran High School Host Club but make it sapphic.
It took a long time to finally get to this point, where everyone is being honest about their feelings. Well, Hime and Yano. Mai-san finally reveals the secrecy surrounding her arm cast and healing. Then Hime decides after the confessions with Yano that she was…
This episode filled me with a lot of angst. I can’t wait to see what happens next. I also want to know what will be Kanoko’s next move.
YAY! i Really liked this volume cuz HELLLLLOOOO were finally Getting past years of miscommunication THANK GOODNESS!!! like dang its about time.. so glad hime stayed Until they resolved their miscommunication cuz it was actually Slowly taking me out so bad.. ALSO hime talking about some sisterhood for yano to kiss her 5 seconds later LIKE IM CRYING she didnt know they were gonna play in her face…
AAAAAAA!!! (✯ᴗ✯) E my baby Mitsuki è così felice (◍•ᴗ•◍)! Però il finale... HIME NON PUOI FARMI QUESTO 😭😭
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I love this manga.Manga can be tranlated into english version.it will be great for many readers over the world. Thanks for translating and making this manga!
During the first half I was getting bored, and then BAM, chapters 29 and 30, right in the feels. I've never seen Japanese manga treat wlw attraction so openly
Mitsuki is sick, and Hime is sent to visit her..... insert a confession here (because as always, blondest of blond idiots demands to be liked, and steamrolls into it)
Shift 29 and 30 were illustrated and written so beautifully \(^-^;) my favorite of the series thus far. is a perfect set up for the following volume. I will continue to follow their journey with enthusiasm ^^v
