A mysterious village. A huge secret. A powerful new resource. And chaos threatens it all.
Hudson, Madison, and Kai are thrilled when they come across something that shouldn't even exist yet in the new world of PrimeVerse: a village! Finally, they will have time to slow down and take a break.
Or not.
They can't gain entry without first completing a challenging quest that the villagers couldn't. Nothing is ever easy, is it? Especially when their quest takes them into uncharted territory: a dungeon with a hard and fast death limit.
Even if they survive the dungeon, how will they handle the competition between the Archons of PrimeVerse?
PrimeVerse: Dose of Chaos is book two of the PrimeVerse LitRPG series that follows our heroes as they navigate life and explore all new game mechanics including dungeons, magic, and a new playable race.
I hate trying to write reviews because there are really only pass/fail results for me. Did I make it all the way through? Yes? 5 stars. No? There would be nothing here to read. In all fairness, if an author holds my attention from page one to the end, they’ve done their job. Anything less than 5 stars is petty criticism from someone incapable of even doing the job let alone doing a better one.
So in respect for the author and their work, I am going to start pasting this along with a generic review I found somewhere. “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”
Now, since I have to keep explaining myself to people who don't like my reviews, I guess some clarification is in order.
1. I am 100% against criticism for works of art. Art is subjective, meaning reviews are irrelevant. The observer's opinion is only relevant to the observer. It is my belief that regardless of what others might say, I have to experience the art for myself.
2. I read upwards of 20 books a month. The $10/month I spend on K U, feels like I am cheating the authors. But since I can't afford 20 books a month if I were to purchase them directly, all I can offer is a positive review. That leads us to the final point.
3. If I get to the end of a book, then it was worth my time. I give those books 5 stars because it helps the author get exposure. That is the only reason I write reviews at all.
I understand that people are people and they are going to do what they do regardless of my stance. I know the way that I review books upsets some people. I am sorry they feel that way but as many have said, they will just ignore my review going forward. In fact, if you made it this far through my review, you should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews here. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.
MC says he is a gamer then goes on to make some of the worst gaming decisions, that I have ever seen. I really wanted to love this series and in the hopes that the MC would grow a brain; I gave the second book a try even after shaking my head all through the first book.
What I loved: -No Harem or needless sex scenes -Interesting class mechanic -Interesting starting world -Story has potential
What I Despised : - Mc's only trick is plot armor, in that he does something that gets him killed and by plot armor manages to save the day. -MC is useless in combat in a world where pain is real and everything including other players want to kill him. He has been dying non-stop since book one and FINALLY around 60% into book two he decided to slot in a combat skill, that's a little bit more useful than throwing rocks. -His companions joke about how often he dies and how useless he is in every battle other than plot armor aka Luck but I'm supposed to take that as funny banter. I rolled my eyes so many time I was getting a headache.
Note to Author: if you are going to write a non combat focused MC maybe then don't have him fight so damm often. Maybe have him take some range combat or support skills. Or better yet some utility skills that allow him to skip combat all together, because when I see a supposed gamer not take a support or combat skill and dying 100+ times in 2 books it gets really annoying at how stupid someone can be (referring to stupid MC not the author just to be clear ). Needless to say I'll be dropping off here best of luck to the author.
I thought the first book was only as mediocre as it was because it had to spend time introducing us to everything about this new world. Now it's clear to see that it is because the writing isn't good. The grammar is ridiculous, the people hardly resemble people at all, let alone the gamers they call themselves. Sadly, I had looked forward to this book, and it let me down.
A nice addition to the story line, though it certainly took unexpected twists and turns from where the previous book ended. I can't say I personally liked how it went, but that's just me, and should not be interpreted as claiming this was a bad story, it certainly was not that. If you liked the first one in the series, then you'll probably like this one too, and if you delight in shaking things up, then this will certainly fill you with glee. Great happenings are afoot, and we learn more about the driving force behind the world, and motivations of those who choose their champions. It's a very interesting read, and I doubt anyone will walk away from the book feeling cheated of a good story.
Let's start off by saying that I am a fan of the first primeverse novel however there were bits and pieces here and there that I thought could have used some work. This book however is miles above and beyond book one. You can really feel that billiau feels comfortable with the characters and the direction of the story. There are quite a few lol moments as well as some tender loving moments all in all it has a great balance pace and tone. If your a fan of the first one then you'll love this one. If you were one the fence either about the first one or after the first then trust me this one is well worth the read and will make you a fan.
It's rare for me to track anything here that I didn't actually finish, but in this case I stopped when the villain starting going after children.
You can rationalize a lot of things and still believe you're the hero of your own story - I don't think trying to deliberately harm children is one of them.
I was already on the fence and feeling generally unenthused during the whole dungeon scenario. I nearly just stopped reading when that was done, as I had predicted the surprise in the village already (not a bad thing - tropes are tropes for a reason). But I wanted to see how town building was handled.
This is a very very mixed bag. I feel there was some progress and then everything went to shit. Powers seems to be incredibly unbalanced when someone who is under an archon can get stronger faster than someone who is under an archon, had the blessing of another archon and the prime of death... I'm still going to read future books in this series but I'm not liking how pacifistic and weak the Adjudicator is being. It seems like the enemies can do everything while the good guys are twiddling their thumbs. I really hope book 3 takes a turn.
I’m not gonna lie, I almost gave it 1 star after the author bagged on Star Wars with veiled references to a failed movie franchise, but I’ll let it slide this time I suppose lol
I really enjoyed the incorporation of a dungeon in this book, and it was interesting reading about different traps and puzzles as opposed to the typical MMORPG hack and slash your way through a dungeon. It had more of a D&D type feel in these places of this book, which was fun.
Overall it was very well done and I read straight through, hard to put it down!
High literature this ain't, what it is is a fun, easy read. The series hits the all of the marks for LItRPG. As others have noted, all of the elements in this story have been used in other stories too. Of course, that's pretty much true of everything I read in the last 15 years. The trick is and my frequently not-so-humble opinion) to invent new elements, it's to use the elements that you have an entertaining fashion, and this author achieves that well.
This is an awesome sequel! No sophomore slump here. Everything about PrimeVerse: Dose of Chaos is bigger and better than PrimeVerse: Forced Login. The characters, the story, the bad guys. There's more stuff about the Archons, which is some of my favorite parts. And, since the game system was thoroughly explored in book 1 none of that discovery slows things down. It is a fast-paced fun novel that I encourage everyone to check out!
I had a lot of fun reading the first book, and this one was even better. I really enjoyed the story and where the author chose to take it. It is a real page turner but I thought the brief moments of rest for the characters were used really well for character development. I really liked seeing the characters grow and I feel like I got to know them more. There are certain elements introduced in this story, no spoilers, that made the story world open up even more and I am excited to see how the author continues to develop them. Getting to see, I'll just say, new abilities the characters could use in this story was awesome. Tons of great action. I was smiling and laughing a lot too while reading. Great sequel! Enjoyed it even more than the first and it ended in a good place that didn't wrap everything up, but leaves you eager to read the next book in the series. I think this book is a lot longer than it felt, which is awesome because the pages just flew by. Lots of fun.
Struggle is good. Overwhelming power the bad have get just makes no sense. Mind control creates slavery in game, it is just not believable or enjoyable. Maybe for others it is what they want to see, just not for me. To bad really, I enjoyed it and like the story and would love to see it progress, but I am out.
The author did another great job of taking the reader on a trip. The protagonist is sad, bumbling, caring, heart full, not real smart, yet oddly endearing. The antagonist is as frustrating. She is oddly over-powered, sneaky, and you want to punch her. Well done and great job of evoking emotions in the reader.
Loving this world. The characters are well developed and the author has a particular skill when it comes to making you dislike particular characters. Not an easy job, but done very well in this case. You’ve read book one and two is a great sequel. Eagerly awaiting three now...
A quality second effort and well done overall. I do think that Madison and Hudson's relationship needs to gel, and waiting for three books to see if they get together seems to be dragging things out.
Overall none of the characters really stand out (I even find the MC a bit "meh") and I would say that's what loses it a star from me. This is of course completely subjective, but it's how I feel. Lots of potential for this world though, so let's see what happens.
This series has been fun so far. It's nice to see an author who can make me laugh out loud. If you are looking for a nice relaxing read with some funny moments, give it a try.
This world is really exciting and its got a great backstory. The characters are engaging and I love the slow burn romance. I can't wait to see how it all develops. Great job Billiau!
Ugh. Such a frustrating villain, 2 parts believable, 1 part too successful, and a whole bunch pretty solid plot to get there. The main characters have improved a lot
This was definitely a good sequel. Love the premise, I am starting to love the world. Characters are still growing. I like the balance between the ga,e elements and the story. Hope this series continues quickly. Archons!
This second book of a three book series is a well done extension of the story started in book one. The plot takes a nice twist and the MC never becomes OP. Looking forward to the final installment!
the second book is not as good as the first for me. A nice dungeon run but else it feels not like a world but really like following a computer game. Also was not called for - and too easy to spot from the beginning.
Main character has a good dose of morality. A lot more than I would have in dealing with the crazy people. I lean more towards the village guard. I am definitely looking forward to book three.
Good continuation for this story. The characters are fun and interesting. The game world is unique from a lot of LitRPGs. The story is interesting with the unexpected waiting on the next page.
