Constantine the Great: A Captivating Guide to the First Christian Roman Emperor and How He Ruled the Roman Empire

Constantine the Great is a complex figure surrounded by controversies and contradictions. The sources history left for us to read are often biased one way or the other as he is the first Christian Roman emperor. His own propaganda paints a bright picture of his actions and his personality, while on the other side, we have his political enemies who paint him in much darker colors. All of the sources available to us are either fully supporting Constantine or are strictly against him. There is no objective work that will give us any true insight on how Constantine lived, what he was thinking, and what his true motives were. In truth, contemporary historians served the purpose of writing what the people wanted to hear. They followed the latest political and cultural trends, and they did not care too much about objectivism and truth.

The questions like what sort of a man was Constantine and what exactly did he achieve during his reign are still baffling historians. It is through tracking the right material and reading in between the lines that we are able to give some sort of answer. We have to use our common sense to discern the truth in the pages of propaganda and paint a new, more accurate picture of Constantine the Great, his deeds, and his persona.

In Constantine the Great: A Captivating Guide to the First Christian Roman Emperor and How He Ruled the Roman Empire, you will discover topics such as
The Early Life of Constantine the Great
Early Rule
Civil Wars
Constantine, the Lavish Administrator
The Man behind the Emperor

And much, much more!

First if you are history buff like me check into the books put out by Captivating History there are awesome to read and to be honest they do a pretty good job of separating fact from fiction.
This man was very usual and his reign was even more unusual and unpredictable he ruled over an empire now trying to grow but stay the same, an empire who fought who was right the old gods or this new group called the Christian's. Constantine believed in the old gods and worshipped Apollo The Sun God and he tried to believe Jesus and Apollo was the same and in his time that was thought by many due to beliefs had common festivals and holy days that was so similar you could not really separate them and his reign was a reign of walking a fine line between them because he needed both to keep in power.
Also during his reign there was a growing of corruption and greed he tried to do away with old laws of the empire and replace with what he assumed was better in both the law and the punishment but in the end it did not work. In many things he did most of them were failures and cost the empire greatly and lead to the death of the empire. In his time everyone was trying to bring the empire back to it standing in the world during the time of the Caesars and the early day of the empire but that was also a failure by the time of Constantine the empire had lost so much and had been devided into parts with acting Caesars and Agustins who was fighting and killing each other there was no future for the empire so he moved the capital from Rome to Canstantinople and changed the name to Bazintine Empire of the west Rome was the western empire and the first to be finally destroyed and burned.

An impeccable book with regards to proofreading - that is, there are no distracting typos.
All in all, an engaging story of the Emperor who converted the Roman Empire to Christianity.
I personally would have liked a more extended chapter about life in Constantinople, but maybe that is better left for another book.
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review but I am in no way related to him or to Captivating History.

Very interesting summary but would have expected more pages for someone of great importance to the Roman history.

There are no objective works, contemporary to Constantine, who tell the unbiased truth. The most honest portrayals of what happened would have to be Constantine's correspondence and the edicts he issued.  Constantine's name immediately brings to mind two things:  He converted the Roman Empire to Christianity, and he built Constantinople, which would become the center of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire).

Near his death, Constantine set up another tetrarchy (4 rulers).  He could not know that those four would kill each other off until there remained only one. Constantius II reestablished his father's sole-rule system and ruled the whole Roman Empire until his death in 361.

This book was clearly written with causes and effects shared with the reader.
