Bulletproof Witch #4

Death Rides at Sunset

Rate this book
Temperance Whiteoak is in trouble, or at least more so than usual. She’s lost in the wilderness, no hexbullets, no Astor, coat malfunctioning or worse. She’ll have to rely on her meager resources and wits to evade the bandits and monsters that want to see her on the wrong side of the dirt.

Adding to her troubles, there is a new threat on the horizon, an enemy from across the Southern Ocean unlike anything Temperance has encountered before. Simply surviving this time won’t be enough, as the fate of all Korvana may hang in the balance. Besides, there are worse fates than death…

DEATH RIDES AT SUNSET is the fourth installment in a planned eight-part series. The book also includes six illustrations by artist Jin A. Lee.

James is an accountant living in Eastern Washington. He started writing in 2015 after a dream left a story in his head that he couldn’t make go away. He’s been typing at the keyboard furiously ever since, and probably won’t stop until sometime around noon on the day of his funeral.

His current published works include the Bulletproof Witch Series, the Books of the Ascendant, as well as a short story titled ‘For Want of a Sword’ in the Roll of the Dice III anthology.

The fourth Bulletproof Witch is a switch from the previous demon hunts by our protagonist. Temperance is now trying to help a young man escape from a vampire hunting him across multiple continents. It is a return to Western violence and broadens the world considerably. I also like the inclusion of LGBT themes even if poor Temperance handles it poorly. I think it may be my favorite of the books.

This was an excellent continuation of the series. I loved the return to the countryside; here FJB commits further to beautifully descriptive scenery and worldbuilding. As I've mentioned before, I really like that each book is a different setting - badlands to snowlands to city to plains/grasslands/frontier wilds. What this book lacks in the intrigues of the previous book it makes up for in roaming adventure, cross-country journeys, character trials, supernatural enemies, weird monsters and murderous bandits, and classic western tropes (and if I have to, I'm always gonna pick these latter themes). This book could well be considered a perfect archetype of the Weird West genre.

We see more flashbacks from Temperance's past, which, interestingly, each book seems to continue from previously, edifying us in stages as to how Temperance got to the position she is now, as a Pistol Witch. The flashbacks (a poor word to choose; it is more like a consistent B-plot, yet one integral to the series) are at least as enjoyable as the main plot, sometimes even more engaging. Seeing Temperance obliviously suffer from alcohol withdrawal while placed in a dangerous survival situation, forced to rely on her own wits and instincts, were perhaps my favourite parts.

There are still things hidden to us in the overarching narrative, including further questions brought up by this book - the whole deal with Astor , what Temperance's dreams portend, and what characters she might meet again.

The character relationships in this book were at least as strong as the previous book. I didn't expect the earnest attention given to LGBT themes in this book - a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one. I thought FJB wrote a particular scene, or rather character narrative, very well, without smoothly sugar-coating Temperance's reaction as one normally might for a protagonist MC. I was pleased with the inclusion so extremely rare in fantasy or western books, especially given modern political controversy, and it increased my already considerable respect for the author.

I'm looking forward to seeing what lies in Temperance's future...

Never a dull moment

Trials and tribulations abound, as well as perseverance and seemingly unending fortitude. There is never a dull moment! Action, thrills and a strong protagonist make for an exciting, interesting read.
