A wild black stallion has cautiously watched a beautiful white mare, from the safety of the forest for many years. He longs to be with her, and ventures close to the barn nightly to communicate with her. They share their deepest desires and secrets. Now it is winter, and the rest of the wild herd has moved on, but the stallion stays. He cannot stand the thought of being so far away from her. The scent of sweet alfalfa hay and the enticing lure of the white mare is too much for him. He must find a way to be with her. But will it be worth the risk? Satin and Cinders is a story of courage and determination.
Jan Sikes writes compelling and creative stories from the heart. She openly admits that she never set out in life to be an author. But she had a story to tell. Not just any story, but a true story that rivals any fiction creation. The entertaining true story comes to life through fictitious characters in an intricately woven tale that encompasses four books.
And now, this author can’t find a way to put down the pen. She continues to write fiction and has published numerous award-winning short stories. She published her debut paranormal romance novel, Ghostly Interference, Book 1 in The White Rune Series, in 2020, which won a bronze medal award from Reader’s Favorite. Jagged Feathers releases January 31, 2022, as Book 2 of that series, and Saddled Hearts will release later in 2022.

I loved this micro read about a wild stallion who fell in love with a stabled horse, Satin. This is not only a sweet love story but has a strong message never to give up. I felt like I was standing in the forest with the wild horse as he watched his beloved. He had to decide what was important to him and act on it. His bravery to be with her was inspiring, making this the perfect read to uplift your spirits. I highly recommend this!
This is a very short read, but it delivers both a message and a huge warm fuzzy. Told from the POV of Cinders, a wild stallion in love with Satin, a domestic mare, the story delivers a tale of longing, love, and having the confidence to reach for your dream. When Cinders braves the unknown to connect with the mare he has loved from afar in spirit, he and Satin find strength in their devotion to each other. The delivery is sweet and wraps with a lovely and strengthening message about pursuing your dreams, even when it involves stepping out of your comfort zone.
This was a sweet love story about two horses in love. This story could have been about any two people, but it’s about a beautiful mare, Satin, and the wild black stallion, Cinders, who are in love and separated by living standards and a fence. Cinders narrates. The author does a wonderful job of bringing the emotions to life and writing about the horse’s thoughts, inviting us into their story. An equine love story with a human feel.
Such a great very short story by Jan Sikes. This story will make you long for a love as deep as the love of Satin & Cinders if you do not already have this type of love in your life! It might make you doubt your current relationship if they won't do absolutely anything for you like Cinders does for Satin.
"Many times in life, our deepest desires seem just out of reach, and it takes uncommon courage to pursue them, just as it did for Cinders. But if we don't try, we will never know if our dreams are achievable. The rewards out weigh the risks" Jan Sikes.
The only complaint I have about this very short story is that it was too short, I want more! Jan could easily write an entire book about the long years that Satin & Cinders long to be together, their daily lives without each other and where their lives may or may not have taken them. Excellent little read, true to Jan's style!
What an incredible short story by Jan Sikes! Satin and Cinders touched so deeply in my soul. I love horses, so I was drawn to this book, but it’s so, so much more...unconditional love, it’s what we all strive to find.
This is such a heartwarming micro-read. It reminded me of Lady and The Tramp. The stallion wild and living on the plains, and the mare much loved and cared for by her humans. The stallion wants to be with the mare but the risk is overwhelming. It could cost him his freedom, possibly his life. The stallion must decide whether to live alone and free or take a chance on humans to be with the mare.
A love affair between two horses, one pampered and well taken care of and the other, wild and fending for himself. It is a reciprocated love and the two understood each other.
Satin finally showed her wild friend the way to approach her. The two united to the surprise of Satin’s human owners. And they named the wild one, Cinder. A cute micro read!
This is one of the sweetest stories I've ever read. It brought tears to my eyes as I prayed for the horse to break into the stable. The tale made me feel like a kid again, hoping for Lassie to come home.
Since this is a micro read, I feel it requires a shorter review. Otherwise, I may give too much away, and I detest spoilers. First and foremost, five stars. Easily.
This was the perfect quick read with flawless writing. The story grabs you and takes you on a sweet journey all in one sitting.
