National bestselling and award-winning author Joanna Campbell Slan was born in Jacksonville, Florida, but she grew up in a small town in Indiana. After graduating from Ball State University with a degree in journalism, she worked as a newspaper reporter, a newspaper ad salesperson, a television talk show host, a college teacher, a public relations professional, and a motivational speaker. In that capacity, she was named by Sharing Ideas Magazine as “one of the top 25 speakers in the world.”
Slan's work has appeared in five of the New York Times Bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul books, and one of those became a television show. She is the author of nearly 80 books, nonfiction and fiction, including Death of a Schoolgirl, which won the 2013 Daphne du Maurier Award of Excellence.
Joanna's personal essays have appeared in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, and one was made into a television program on the Pax Network. The college textbook Joanna wrote—Using Stories and Humor: Grab Your Audience—has been praised as an invaluable resource by Benjamin Netanyahu’s speechwriter and endorsed by Toastmasters, International.
RT Book Reviews has called Joanna “one of mystery’s rising stars.” Her first novel—Paper, Scissors, Death—was an Agatha Award finalist. It features Kiki Lowenstein, a spunky single mom who lives in St. Louis. The sixth book in that series will be released Summer 2013.
Kirkus Reviews has said, “Slan’s mysteries are most valuable for the well-developed characters and the issues they raise.” RT Book Reviews has said, “Kiki is so darn entertaining that she’ll keep readers hooked.” A series of short stories featuring Kiki are available on Kindle.
Joanna’s newest series—The Jane Eyre Chronicles—began with Death of a Schoolgirl (Berkley) and continues with the release of Death of a Dowager. The series features Charlotte Brontë’s classic heroine Jane Eyre as an amateur sleuth.
As “Lila Dare,” Joanna has penned the fourth book in the Southern Beauty Shop series—Wave Good-bye.
Joanna is married to David Slan. The Slans live on Jupiter Island, Florida.
Book 1 was pretty good. By the end of book 4 I gave up reading. What happened to Martin? Plot problems and stumbling over typos and misused words got to be too much to put up with for so-so stories. The best thing I can say for this series is that I got it for free. I would expect that along the way to becoming a newspaper reporter Ms. Slan would have learned the fine art of proofreading and the need for editing ...maybe she didn't and that's why she she left that profession? I reported numerous problems in these book and have deleted from my library all items by Ms. Slan.
WARNING! Reading this series is apt to result in: extreme loss of sleep, ignoring household chores and those around you. Strong storyline and compelling characters combined with heart stopping action.
Wonderful! Among my few read again and again series. I read the individual books originally. Joanna Campell Slan did not have the rights to the early ones when I discover Kiki Lowenstein, so I read them out of order. I fell in love with the series immediately and was thrilled when I finally got to read the first books. It would be best to read them in sequence because the series follows important milestones in Kiki’s life. Watching Kiki's personal growth and the evolution of her relationships is my favorite part of the series; there are such wonderful characters and we meet new ones as the series builds. Throughout the series Ms. Slan maintains the high quality of character and plot that is the hallmark of all of her works. The mysteries are really well plotted but it will always be the great characters that keep me coming back.
Unbelievable, keystone cop carp thrown in with so called characters that are unlikable and not memorable further mixed with unnecessary and split flashbacks that only serve to make the lack of coherent so called storyline more ridiculous, unlikable, redundant, unnecessary, long winded, shallow and boring.
I would have given it four stars but after reading all of the books 1-6, the epilogue on #6 did not fit that book! I have no idea how Kiki was after being shot by Brenda, how Sheila was after being beaten by Bill! What happened to the real epilogue for book 6? Big disappointment!
I’ve enjoyed this series enough so far that I just purchased the remaining books included in set 7-13! There’s just enough mystery, romance, suspense, humor, life’s lessons, characters of various age groups with a myriad of preferences and personalities to satisfy a wide range of readers.
Some technical aspects of this collection caused minor annoyance such as finding the epilogue to book 4 in the last few pages following book 6 and all the additional series/ author information, promotions etc. It would be an enhancement if the editing caught errors of duplicate words or errors in words inserted that had possibly intended to have been removed etc. The editing doesn’t do the author justice. But if the reader can follow the storyline well enough despite these overlooked errors, it’s an entertaining series. I look forward to the next episode in Kiki’s life!
I love the characters and the tongue in cheek asides from Kiki. Really good writing. My only issue was the epilogue of the 6th book wasn't for that story, it was from the one with a murder at the school. So, other than a bizarre news article about the last scene there are too many loose strings. Is Kiki pregnant? If so, did she loose the baby in all her scuffles with Bill? Did Detail let survive his wife's drugged coffee? Was Claudia arrested? What about Limits mom? The list goes on.
I'm a scrapbook novice and a mystery lover. What an excellent series for both my interests. The stories touch on social issues and make you aware of what needs to be done to help each other.
i enjoyed the books at the beginning of the series. The books dipped too much into social issues after the first few books. Sadly, I will no longer read future books from this series or books from any of her other series. The author's soapbox preaching was too much for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I got both box sets to complete the series and hate that I wasted the time and effort. Book 1 was okay, book 2 showed a massive decline in the mentality of the author and I gave up after just a few pages of book 3. The only up side was that I had gotten the second set first when it was offered for free. Not wanting to read out of order, I waited for the first set to be offered for free, so no money was lost, thank goodness, just my time. Being a crafter, I was certain the books would be as great as the reviews, and my daughter has a cat named Kiki, so it seemed like a win-win. Wow! Was I ever wrong! The mindset of the author, at least for this series, is slapstick comedy, that wasn't even good back in the 1930's, mixed with modern-day settings. The result is a set of books that make women look stupid and shallow and men look weak and blase`. What an insult to any person with the ability to live, breathe and think. The saddest part is all the 5* reviewers...same mentality. That says something for why the world (or is it just the people of the USA?) has dropped down into this mindset of complacency and compliance in the midst of monstrous world control. Not to mention the frequent typos and out of place words appearing like some kind of warped afterthought. I'll return the books and never bother with this author's books again.
For two days the only thing I could do was read, I couldn't put down this series of Kiki fighting to be do what she felt was right. The caracters, the friendships, the love, drama pain and strength of courage to find truths behind each befuddled mystery. Joanna Campbell Slan is on top caliber writer that brings you into a world of mystery and murder so compelling you won't want to miss out on the action and strength of Kiki Lowenstein. Aquier books one-six of this perfect series "Kiki Lowenstein Cozey mysterys"so you yourself can enjoy reading it as much as I have. 🤔🙄Kat
This series could be titled Murphy’s Law in One Woman’s Life. Kiki Lowenstein has it all. Then, within a few days, she has a preteen daughter and financial calamity. She also has a belligerent mother-in-law. Thus begins her new life.
Death comes to us all, but it seems to come often to people in Kiki’s life. She determines to expose killers and puts herself in jeopardy as a result. Perseverance is part of who she is. Kindness is another of her qualities. I had also concluded that floor mat would describe her and was getting quite annoyed. It wasn’t until the sixth book that readers learn why. But now I’m hooked. I need to find book 7.
This is an interesting series. The foundation revolves around an insecure single mom with a teenage daughter, a critical mother-in-law and a narcissistic mother. And physical health issues, the challenges of running a small business, and what is described as Old St. Louis, rife with racism and a self-absorbed bunch of rich white women. Some folks are nice, and also not so nice. Some issues that have developed throughout the series are resolved. Some are just raising their ugly heads. And whoo-hee, one character should be careful what they wish for.
Not going to lie, Kike took some getting used to. Watching her blossom from that helpless stay at home spouse who never worked a day in her life to a very hard working single mom barely making ends meet but damned determined to take care of her daughter, after the death of her husband, was both inspiring and frustrating. Some people took advantage of her, and others helped her, but not always from the goodness of their hearts. She struggled not only financially, but emotionally and watching her navigate through that was tough. I applauded her dedication to doing what was best for her daughter, but sometimes she went a little extreme, but given Anya was pretty much her whole world, I could understand most of it. The hardest thing was watching her grow more confident, but also irresponsible as it relates to her own safety. Needing to solve her husband's murder, and helping friends and family is great, but realistically, not something a single mom should be risking to the extent she always did.
And strangely, her inability to understand where Detweiler was coming from as it relates to doing the right thing where his marriage was concerned bothered me. At times, I think she was too hard on him and using her husband's actions against him. And then there was the other side of that coin that made me wish he wasn't trying to do the right thing and just kicked Brenda to the curb when she came back after walking out on him. Overall, I liked him. And lucky for Kiki, she had some good friends in Clancy, Laurel, Mert and even Johnny. When things got tough, they were there to help her as much as they could.
The way the series ended was concerning, but admittedly, pulled you in. I could see how the author based her storylines on certain sensitive topics, and although I may not have liked where it went, I still liked the stories in general and the different characters.
I had read some of these but not all of them. I like Kiki & the other characters even though Kiki needs to develop some backbone. She lets everyone tune over her even thought she starts out to take control. Likable books. I didn’t understand why the Epilogue of book 6 referred to an earlier book & not book 6. The biggest problem with this series is lack of decent proofreading. I see other reviewers have also mentioned typos, misspellings & left out words. Sucre Are understandable but many many in every book are not.
I could really relate to Kiki Lowenstein. She was married to a man whose family did not approve of her (not a spoiler) and struggles as a single mother to carve out a living. She loves animals and continues to adopt a minagerie as she moved through the books. I have Kindle Unlimited (love it), so I have downoaded the next group of books. Lots of fun romance to keep the mysteries moving along. Wholesome read for people who don't like intimacy as a filler (me.)
Same storyline over and over. Kiki gets involved in a murder, starts investigating so her daughter won't be in danger ( of course this puts her daughter in danger), figures out the killer and almost gets killed herself, gets rescued in the nick of time, maybe ends up in the hospital. By the fourth book this was old stuff. Also, until push comes to shove, she is a meek push over who is always worried about losing her job.
Joanna Campbell Slan is a correlative storyteller. The stories are fast paced, compelling, witty, and exciting. The is something for every one in these books - romance, mystery, action, animals, kids, friendships, and crafting. The only thing I didn't like was that only six books are bundles together. I was ready to keep reading. I recommend these books to anyone who loves cozy mysteries that you can't stop reading.
I just loved these books...couldn't wait until I was able to get back to my reading. Luckily, I recently retired, and don't have any real schedule. I loved her characters; they've become so real to me, that I can't wait to start the next series of books. Her endings are sudden and give you what you need to know. But also, they leave the reader with questions about what's going to happen in regards to unresolved situations....must go to bed now, and start the next book!
I got this set to provide something for “beach reads”, in short, mindless, mildly amusing and certainly nothing approaching “War and Peace”. Author did a good job providing background, fleshing out stories and relationships of characters. Rapidly got weary of heroine’s travails and, by the end of series, was strongly reminded of juxtaposition of “Perils of Pauline” & Pollyanna” Entertaining though & will consider second part of series for next summer-maybe.
Are there typos, yes bunches. This did not detour my enjoyment of the stories. Book 4 left out her cat and I was a little upset about that, but he is back in book 5. Being the mother of 2 Great Danes and 4 cats I can say that they get along wonderfully, as they do in the books. I enjoy Kiki's get-er-done outlook. When you have no other choices, you put on your big girl panties and do what you have to. Enjoyed.
This series is one of the best I have read in a while! Joanna Slan goes beyond fairytale relationships with little hiccups like a lot of cozy mysteries tend to portray. The character relationships are real life and sometimes messy. Their troubles go deeper than a simple argument into lifetime misunderstandings and it makes for raw, real, feelings while reading and becoming engrossed in the story lines. I am excited to continue the series and truly can't put my kindle down much since I started reading the Kiki Lowenstein books.
Author Joanna Campbell Slan has a unique style of writing. We are following the "heroine", Kiki Lowenstein, thru her crazy life ups and downs, challenges, sorrows, and joys. Kiki's made family are wonderfully crafted characters from all walks of life and noth sides of the tracks. The author has even managed to give us humorous moments, especially while Kiki talks to herself. Great reading. I can't wait to get to the next book.
I really liked reading this box set of cozy mysteries. I liked that there were Jewish aspects included in these stories, because that doesn't happen often and there were animals involved too. I would recommend this box set to anyone who enjoys reading cozy mysteries.
As someone who lived thirty years in St Louis, I loved the way the town is accurately represented. Joanne helps the reader deal with serious issues by having us live our way through them with Kiki. I really wish there were a Time in a Bottle, I’d probably hang out there a lot!
Actually I'd give them a 3 1/2. I liked these, but there are A LOT of grammatical errors and it's very obvious that nobody beta read them. If I'd listed them singly, I wouldn't be 6 books behind in my reading goal... The last one left you hanging because you didn't know how it played out. I will probably read the next one because I want to know what happened to Johnny.
Very interesting series, although you could easily read any of them on its own. Author gets you involved in the welfare of the characters tying their problems with contemporary issues that many people face. Strong support network of friends and coworkers, sharing talents and experiences, a true female empowerment.
you had me at mystery, my hand down favorite genre ever, i will go to all lengths to check out a new author to me, ones i already know, just give me a mystery ... sold!! such a sweet read, great book covers, in a newsletter from the author, heard about this book, buy this book all proceed with go to the charity ...
This is a true survival series. Full of learning to love, trust, and becoming strong as a mother that fights her way through all that life throws her way. Kiki is a person you will not be able to stop reading about, as danger seems to follow her around. I love this series! A must read!
I cannot recommend this author based on these 6 books. The concept of scrapbooking with psychology was of great interest originally. But…the characters and storylines flipped from weak goody goody to certifiable. ??? If this had been a real book, I would have thrown it across the room when I (finally) read the Epilogue to Chapter 6.
