Listen, I like a gorgeous man as much as the next guy, and Jax is definitely that, but he's not here to do all the things to me I secretly fantasize about when I get a chance to sneak off. He's here to babysit me. And he's relentless and kind of an a**hole. I can't even sneak off to secretly fantasize in peace, and I need to fantasize. I need to fantasize before I explode in a ball of fantasy juice build up.
Picking up immediately where book #28 left off, Playing with Jax dives straight into the action with new pair, Lane and Jax, who are FBI agents working undercover in the largest “chosen” trafficking ring in the US.
(For those playing at home, who aren’t aware of this series and its themes, “chosen” are humans or shifters who are extremely rare and coveted, who are able (male or female) to bear children with shifters.)
Lane is a human agent and secretly a chosen himself, and his new kangaroo shifter bodyguard, Jax, is fairly smitten from the get-go, desperate to get a taste of Lane and remove the scent blocking device he wears on his person, which would allow Jax to know, for certain, that Lane is actually his mate.
Lane is a sweetheart of a gentle giant, big and soft around the middle, hating the work he does but desperate to save as many lives as he can, even at the detriment of his own health and safety. He’s a capable agent, but he’s also quite shy and sexually inexperienced, and suffers from some pretty poor self-esteem issues relating to his body image, assuming that gorgeous and sassy Jax, who’s built like a footballer and the epitome of boy-next-door-charm, would never be into someone like him.
Despite his goading smirks and teasing behaviour, Jax is obsessed with Lane from day dot, knowing instinctively, that Lane is likely his mate and wanting him desperately, while fiercely needing to protect him in the proverbial lions den at all costs.
I loved a lot of the themes in this instalment and delighted in the sweetness these two shared together. As always in this series, there is little time for deeper character or relationship development, but for what it was (at not-quite 80-pages), I really adored these two and their beautiful but brief little story.
As usual, this story wrapped up with an introduction to the next couple and was left open-ended in terms of larger plot (which has now been building for almost 30 novellas). As such, I still recommend strict series reading order for optimal enjoyment.
This series is often tough-in-cheek with the humour and antics, and the stories are often a bit too breakneck speed to be taken too seriously, but if you’re looking for simple, easy, sexy fated-mates fun, with a dash of mpreg themes (for some of the characters), this series has been a charming little winner indeed.
This was a very interesting and fun read. I enjoyed Lane and Jax and their budding relationship. There was some danger along with a bit of sweet and sexy humor. I found it to be quite intriguing and entertaining with a very intense ending. =)
J.d. Light gets lazy sometimes. This is one of the lazy books. They start randomly, end randomly, have barely any plot and the MCs have almost nothing on page between them.
Most of this story was me being confused by a thousand different names and being put off by the actions of the MCs. Mostly jax. I didn't find him to be a decent character and I really didn't buy into anything even remotely romantic between him and lane.
A few other reviewers said this "love story" was straight up rape and I didn't really feel that way, but it was reluctance at best and non-con at worst. Jax pushed too hard. Lane was scared and felt really self conscious and even if he DID think Jax was hot he was really not into the situation when they kissed. Jax was creepy. He pushed too hard. Lane was a nervous virgin and Jax seemed to kind of use that against him to get what he wanted. His intentions weren't bad, but he didn't handle it well.
If you read jd light books you know that they are short, have terrible horrible editing, sweet (usually), and have very little in the way of a real plotline. Usually that is ok because the sweet romance makes up for all the many many many failings. This is one that doesnt. There is nothing to this even though there could have been. Light is already a lazy author; but then stuff like this comes out and I want to just barf that I spent money on it.
The beginning of the chosen series was great. Then, kind of suddenly they stopped trying. It happened in the terra mortis series too. This is crap. There's been a LOT of books but that's no excuse to just stop trying. Between the editing, the million side characters, the lack of plotting... I could go on sadly. I can mostly look past all that because the stories are cute and fluffy and funny. Nope. Glad this series is randomly coming to an end in true jd light fashion. So disappointed.
This is a shifter/paranormal suspense romance series, the twenty ninth book in the series and it has to be read in order. This is the second of a three-book set (within the larger series) that takes up back to the original location in this series and set things up for the next series! Things are getting more dangerous as the pack takes down the entire ring! These last three books have the best writing and this one has my favorite couple. However, you should go back to book one to start this series as they literally read like one continuous story, you will encounter the couples from the previous stories.
Lane has been through so much & he’s just ready to get the job over with so he can quit and do something more with his life but Jax comes into the picture & he thinks it makes things so much harder but in reality it makes everything so much better! Lane & Jax are beyond amazing together and I love that Jax so much! I love how Jd makes them their own unique way but when it come to their mates they are complete softies! It’s oddly sweet watching a rough & tough man go from glaring to melting into a soft smile when they see their mates!! 😀😀❤️❤️
This one was okay. A solid 3. Entertaining to a degree, but I simply wasn't into the MCs all that much. I did like to see the near conclusion of finding out who the big baddy was that was selling off Chosen.
It was payback for West to bother Lane over is interest in Jax. Jax already wanting to know about Lane just listened in on his conversation to get his info.
To my ratings: A 3,5* is clicked with a 4* but in review marked as 3,5*:
5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-Away-book like ‘Jesse's Smile’ or ‘Joey’ from Angelique Jurd, ‘Save the the kids’ series from EM Leya, ‘Love’s Tethered Heart’ from C.L. Etta or ‘Liberty’ from Seth King), it's like an A+
4* - very good and will be often reread and is a WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises (like most of Andrew Grey books and Davidson Kings 'Haven Hart'-series) it's like an A
3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few times (most romances where you can enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in hospitals). I can recommend them definitively! It's like an B+
3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader (2-3 times a year), it's like a B
2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-reader (I wouldn't recommend it heartily, but it was ok) It's like a C-, D
1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an absolute NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole line, dismissed, repeat the class
Most of Light:s romances are pretty sweet. Lane is a nice guy. What did he do to deserve Jax? Instead of letting Lane know he likes him, Jax becomes a creepy stalker who asks inappropriate questions and makes Lane feel inferior. He lets Lane know he likes him with a little sexual assault, then wonders why Lane isn't spreading his legs for him.
Because they're "true mates", Lane wants Jax to claim him about 5 minutes later. He still finds Jax annoying, but it's okay now because they're getting some?
This isn't my cup of tea, but if you like rape fantasies, maybe you'll like it better.
Fun coupe, but once again, wish this book was longer
This was another Chosen book where everything felt telegraphed and choppy. It felt like we got a series of scenes in a story rather than the whole story, but this isn't rare for this series.
Lane and Jax were funny, both individually and together. I liked how supportive and encouraging Jax was of his mate.
This is the only book in this whole series that I don't like. Something about this couple was rather off-putting from the start. Also, I have to say that there was really bad lighting for one of the models on the cover; it makes him look creepy because it makes his eyes look almost completely black and dead inside.
Once again, quotations should come in pairs... just saying! :(
Wasn't a lot of story here... I am thinking I have let the love of past characters influence my decision to continue reading this series... perhaps I need to rethink that choice and move on to other things. Hmmm...
Wow. I loved this book. That's not anything new I love all J.S Light books. I thought this book was a sweet read. I would definitely recommend this book.
I loved this book so much just wished they had more characters pop up from the series. I am glad though both Lane and Jax realised that they were mates
