The Catechism Of Perseverance: Or, An Historical, Dogmatical, Moral, Liturgical, Apologetical, Philosophical, and Social Exposition of Religion From the Beginning of the World Down to Our Own Days, Volume 1
The esteemed author treats in a learned and attractive manner of the creation, the fall and redemption of man, and the establishment, propagation, and preservation of Christianity: the history of religion, with an exposition of its proofs, its mysteries, its morality, and the immense benefits for which man and society are indebted to it here below, while awaiting the rewards of eternal jus- tice hereafter.
It is impossible to read this series of lessons:
-on the origin of the world and of man, -on our renovation in Jesus Christ, - on the happy influence of the evangelical law in promoting the welfare of nations and individuals, - on the combats and triumphs of the Church, - on the beauty of Catholic feasts (relieving the weary Christian’s heart, and giving a foretaste of paradise)
,without admiring, without esteeming, and without soon prac- tising a religion so full of consolations for the present and so rich in hopes for the future.
Monsignor Jean-Joseph Gaume was a French Roman Catholic theologian and author. While attached to the Diocese of Nevers, he was successively professor of theology, director of the petit séminaire, canon, and vicar-general of the diocese, and had already published several works, when he left for Rome in 1841. Gregory XVI made him a knight of the Reformed Order of St. Sylvester. A doctor of theology of the University of Prague, a member of several societies of scholars, honorary vicar-general of several dioceses, he received from Pius IX in 1854 the title of prothonotary apostolic.
Abbé Gaume is the author of numerous books treating of theology, history, education. Those of the first category are still esteemed, those of the second have fallen into oblivion, and those of the third gave rise to the famous question of the classics. These last writings are all inspired by one and the same thought; vividly struck by the religious and moral deterioration of his age, the author seeks its remote cause, and believes he finds it in the Renaissance, which was for society a resurrection of the paganism of antiquity, prepared the way for the Revolution, and was, in fine, the primal source of all the evil. Such is the dominating idea of the works "La Révolution" (8 vols., 1856) and "Histoire de la societé domestique" (2 vols., 1854). It is again met with in "Les Trois Rome" (1857).
Gaume did not go so far as to exclude the pagan texts; he allowed them some place in higher classes, but banished them from the first years.
In support of a new method of moulding childhood and youth consisting in catechetical instruction and the exclusion of pagan authors, he composed his "Catéchisme de Persévérance, ou Exposé de la Religion depuis l'origine du monde jusqu'à nos jours" (8 vols., 1854); "La Religion et l'Eternité" (1859); "Traité de l'Esprit Saint (1864).
The Abbé Gaume published further: "Bibliothèque des classiques chrétiens, latins et grecs" (30 vols., 1852-55); "Poètes et Prosateurs profanes complètement expurgés" (1857).
----------------------------------------- "Reading this book was one of the greatest graces of my life." St. Therese was talking about a different book. But I'm not. :) I was already blown away by the introduction! (80 pages). It's just his vision, his profound view of history and creation which I find so utterly fascinating. All the world is a stage. His vision spans and connects all ages, centering on Our Lord. Creation and the entire Old Testament leading up to the Incarnation; and the New Testament, Church History, and the story of the Church Militant unfolding after the Incarnation. It's all connected, it's all a drama, and we're part of this incredible drama which is all for the glory of God. It's a view based on St. Augustine's City of God -- the battle of the two cities. Part 1 covers the Old Testament with a wonderful treatise on the 7 days of Creation. He intended this series for high school students, or as the next step after the Catechism, to show young people what an incredible treasure it is to possess the Catholic Faith. How exciting, how profound, how all-encompassing, how inspiring. That treasure is everything! P.S. - This is Volume 1 of the complete version, complete in 4 volumes. At the end of each volume there is a summary in question and answer form. These 4 summaries have been collected and published in multiple forms under the title of the "Petit" Catechism of Perseverance, or sometimes just, "Catechism of Perseverance", without pointing out that it is an abridgement. If it is in question and answer form, it's the abridgement. P.P.S. - The abridgement is also superb, if that's all that can be found. It's like a Catechism in history form. Just know that there's a lot more where that came from!
