Such a wonderful premise, yet it couldn’t keep me engaged and the characters’ behaviour tired me.

The heroine was supposed to be a great warrior but she was immature and so entitled! 🙄
The hero was so stuck on his dead wife and it got on my nerves.

I simply couldn’t.

My review :

« “Amor vincit omnia,” »

Can two people whose relationship began as a war of will find a truce and more together...

From Glynnis Campbell medieval tales I have only read The Reiver, I fell in love with her work through her California Legend series.
I know I have other samples of her work on my shelves but I never find time to read it so a new release and a first in a series is to me the best opportunity to going back to this talented author’s stories.

What a lovely tale it is, between banters and fights, it is packed with actions, betrayal, distrust and sensual moments.

At first I was astonished the story was about Morgan, a widower of three months only, who took hard the passing of his late wife in childbirth. So much he even rejected his own son.
That in spite of the love he professed for his late wife, he can so soon be attracted by another woman.
But it was another time, other customs. Life was faster, things moved at another pace.

Jenefer is so different from his late wife, she awakens his body before his brain notices it. She is his perfect matched, courageous and confident.
Quickly they see past their own beliefs, and fall for the other.

I won’t spoil the plot, but I really disliked Morgan to be able to go from on bed to another so quickly.
Worse I would have slapped him a few time for being so blindsided and so easily led by the nose. Honor and stupidity do not need to be tied.
Jenefer was really fair to let him go unscathed.

In all, I loved this tale of winning another trust, seing the real one behind the mask. There was the perfect mix of humorous moments, dynamic interactions, steamy scenes and an incredible vilain I loved hating.

I so love a kick a$$ heroine! This was an absolutely great read and once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down. If this is what the rest of the Warrior Daughters of Rivenlock series is like, then I'm very much looking forward to reading the next books!! Glynnis Campbell is a wonderful writer and knows how to weave a tale that will keep your interest at an all time high.

Jenefer, a warrior maiden in her own right, intends on acquiring the castle she's had her heart set on for years but when a Highlander, Morgan, arrives to take it over, she's ready to battle him for it! Many twists and turns in their story which includes a babe, a "dead" wife who reappears and passion which knows no bounds. I really loved Morgan's character and hated what he had to go through. The road to HEA is never an easy one as this story proves.

Well written with lots of action, definitely do recommend this book.

This takes a few pages to get used to b/c of the Olde English/Scottish language used but the
charming characters makes you keep reading.
Good build up of sexual tension. Some humor.
And of course, I had to power thru b/c the Heroine had my name & that doesn't happen in historicals very often. (ie. Jenefer- even though it's misspelled)
As this story focuses on 3 female cousins, I will continue with the series.

FYI: this is a spin-off series of the writers previous one-Warrior Maids of Rivenloch-these are the daughters of the Heroines from that one.

Disappointing (spoliers! Beware )

The heroine was supposed to be a bad ass but she gets trapped right away. Then once the story progresses and she gets with hero the hero sleeps with the other woman to get "over her " while shes in the next room ( was his wife who was supposed to be dead but come on) . She never finds out and he's a complete dick to to her and is always accusing her of things . I stopped reading after that was such a disappointment.

It entertained me enough.
The heroine is one of three cousins. They seemed like spoiled children that have temper tantrums when things don’t go their way. They may be warriors (because the book says they are) but behave like silly brats all the time.

The plot:
There is too much going on. In the beginning the plot seems to be the dispute between the hero and heroine over who was the owner of a castle. Then at some point everything changes and the hero dead wife is back and she’s the manipulator vilan. And comes back to the dispute.

The vilan:
She ran away with her lover but kills him after she sleeps with someone else. But guess what? She doesn’t care about sex, so why being jealous? And she doesn’t love him. He’s just means to an end, so again why being jealous and killing him?
She faked her death and left her husband right? So why is she also jealous of anyone who could have her husband devotion? She doesn’t care about having sex with her husband but get jealous of the possibility of someone else having sex with him. Very confusing and inconsistent. The vilan could do any thing she wanted and you have to believe it because it says so. So you believe she fake her death and ran away but how did she do it in a complicated situation? She convince another army to attack her husband but how? The details that makes things credible are missing in this book. You just have to believe things are the way it says they are.

Too much loose ends and inconsistencies in the story. The plot and the characters personalities should have been better developed.
But in spite of all that it was a little entertaining.

Simo_Mica - per RFS
.

A surprise

At first this looked like it was going to be a fluffy girl power book.
There were surprises and dark moments..
I liked the chemistry between the couple. Dead wife isn't my favorite trope and I wondered at the start how they were going to pull it off.
Looking forward to the other books.

Jenefer du Lac has one goal to take back Creagor and become Laird from a stinking highlander. Jenefer is a warrior maiden like her mother before her and along with her cousins has come up with a plan that is foolproof to haunt Creagor. Morgan Mor mac Giric-sad from the death of his wife leaving him with an infant son and a widower flees the highlands intent on never to return again. There are just too many sad and painful memories. Morgan knows that being at Creagor might be less hurtful. Upon Morgan’s arrival he sees Jenefer wandering his lands with a sheer flimsy sheet and lets her stay with her cousins not too far behind. Pretty soon Jenefer worms her way into his heart and despite her being a prisoner she becomes much more. All of Morgan’s people love her and so does Morgan even though he tries not to fall for her. Of course their love is not a smooth road; there are complications from Morgan’s wife who is supposed to be dead and war from not only Jenefer’s family but the English could not only tear them apart but kill them in the end!
What an amazing rollicking astounding historical story! The book is much more than a romance! It is action filled with adventure sweeping and epically told pulling us along in breathless anticipation! The author also just knows how to tell a wonderfully fantastic tale that captures from the very first page until the last filled with amazing characters that no one gets lost in the background from the tough handsome hero to the headstrong fearless heroine and the side characters every is so lifelike and amazingly real! Morgan is truly a great highlander. He’s seems cynical and crass because of his grief but actually has a heart of gold. His grief doesn’t rule him either he opens himself upon to everything including love what’s not to like about him. So of course he makes the perfect book boyfriend! Jenefer the feisty bullheaded heroine is just marvelous! Sure she might have a crazy agenda and it doesn’t work out in her favor but you can’t help but like her too. She might not be quiet and might scare you so is not one to hang out with on a gentle outing but is sure fun plus can defend herself, you or anyone that she cares about, one to have in your corner anyway. This book is one that is a joy to read and one well worth the time! It’s definitely a keeper!

BRIDE OF FIRE by Glynnis Campbell is Book 1 of The "Warrior Daughters of Rivenloch", series and what a beginning! Definitely a keeper! I fall in love with the setting (Medieval castle), the characters (Jenefer of Rivenloch and Morgan Mor mac Giric), and the plot.
Fast paced from the beginning to the last page and beyond. This story definitely lingers, long after the last page.
Filled with danger, strong women, yes, a widowed knight in shining armor, heroine archer, the sword fighting is awesome and the romance is sensual and loving. The scenery is breathtaking. I can't wait to read the next adventure in this series. Edge of your seat drama, that is well written and excuted flawlessly. A must read for fans of Scottish Romance, adventure Romance, with humor and action. Highly recommended!!

Rivenloch, The Borders, Scotland
Autumn, 1155

Lowlander and full-fledged warrior maid, Jenefer du Lac,- is absolutely furious when she finds out her castle is being given away! Yet not to anyone but to one of those hideous highlanders! As far as Jenefer was concerned Castle Creagor was on her land not some bloody Highlanders! It should be her Castle, no matter what the bloody boy king says!

Jenefer heard these Highlanders were hairy, smelly, barbarians that had tangled hair and beards! Plus it was noted these disgusting apes ate baby sheep, including garnishing their weapons with their enemies body parts! Than again, what do you expect from a fourteen year old boy King. The reason why Jenefers parents went on a journey to reason with the King. Yet impatient Jenefer was a wildcat with no patients, ready to demand war with these primitive uncivilized, brutes! Yet she was not prepared for this swoon worthy, beautiful man, as the tables were turned with such great warrior skills as she and her warrior cousins were now hostages of Laird Mogan Mor mac Giric!

This Laird moved to the lowlands to forget his pain and grief if possible. Three months ago he lost his wife in childbirth. He blames himself and his son for her death. It is so extreme, that he does not even look at him nor name him. He has been in a deep depression and filled with guilt blaming himself for her death. It isn’t until he feuds with this lowland warrior beauty, that this honorable highlander sees his true faults. Yet he feels so guilty being attracted to this woman plus this wild lowlander warrior is his hostage.

Jenefer du Lac, names his son Miles. As Morgan has not revealed he is the father. Just to protect his son, soon realizing how horrible he has been blaming his innocent bairn for his wife’s death. He also sees how this beauty and his son are building a bond. Jenefer is the only one who can calm his son and can stop his tears. His son responds only to her in a nurturing way as if she were his parent. Yet Morgan doesn’t realize just how strong until Miles is in danger and she steps in to become the savior for both of them. As things aren’t the way any of them expected and they are surrounded by dark and dangerous forces.

Will a man who promised never to marry ever marry again? Can Morgan act on the strong attraction and feeling he has for Jenefer with his feelings of guilt. Will Jenefer’s parents convince the King to give the Castle to Jenefer to make her the Laird? Will Jenefer and Morgan ever open their hearts to each other. So many unanswered question for this captivating and delightful story.

Best selling author,Glynnis Campbell, pens another phenomenal, heartwarming, Rivenloch masterpiece. As she continues her spectacular Rivenloch maids story with her new series “The Rivenloch Warrior Daughters”. As always easy to get lost in this wonderful story that will make you feel every emotion filled with laughter, fear, betrayal, deception, treachery, heartbreak, hatred, tears, joy, honor, happiness and of course love.

The dialogue is magnificent, the characters are so amazing you can’t help but feel for each one. The plotting is absolutely brilliant, as you can’t help but wonder what could possibly happen next. This author definitely pulls your heartstrings plus racing your pulse with delight. All the settings are breathtaking too!

It’s a fast paced, page turning, riveting, romantic-adventure, from start to finish. It is filled with all the elements historical romance readers love. Fans of strong, independent women will absolutely love this book too. As I find all the Rivenloch warrior maids novels very addictive myself. As each one is so magnificent, so I was thrilled to hear of this new series. Now I can’t wait for Bride of Ice and Bride of Mist which I assume will be her cousin’s Hallie and Feiyan’s novels! ❤️

I could not put this book down as it had me totally mesmerized the whole entire read! Bravo,Glynnis Campbell, it is no wonder I have been reading this authors books since her debut! It was her RITA nominated book, “My Champion” in her first book in her {Knights of de Ware} series. This was almost 20 years ago and I have never stopped. I absolutely and unequivocally love her style of writing and her books. She has the rare ability to put in humor even if a lot of the book may have a dark side or even murder. I find her talent extraordinary and magnificent as an author it’s definitely one you don’t want to miss!

It’s been years since I’ve spent time with The Warrior Maids of Rivenloch. This book was a wonderful welcome back. The Maids daughters are all on the cusp of womanhood and have their own tales to share. This first book in The Warrior Daughters of Rivenloch series, Bride of Fire, features Jenefer, Helena’s daughter. The Lowland Scottish lass learns that her brash temper and fierce skills alone will not win over the Highlander, Morgan. She must learn and adapt to fulfill her dreams. The plot line ebbs and flows with brilliance. The chemistry between Jenefer and Morgan sizzles! The characters were robust and authentic. The author’s use of figurative language painted a beautiful tapestry in my mind’s eye. It was a welcome home to Rivenloch that will keep me around to hear the tales of Jenefer’s cousins.

Glynnis Campbell is marvelous. Morgan is mourning the loss of his wife as he moves to a new home. His despair is so deep that he is ignoring his new born son. Jenifer believes that Morgan has taken over her rightful home and she is determined to reclaim. The first time they meet she ends up being trapped naked in his arms and the sparks begin to fly.

This is a spirited story, with intrigue and suspense. The females are warriors who will fight for the things they love. Morgan and Jenifer match wits and weapons and they fight their burning desire for each other. You will find pleasure as they spar and hold your breath when they are in danger. This is a story you will hate to put down once you have started. To the very end you will be pleasantly surprised.

ARC in exchange for honest review
This was an entertaining read. I truly enjoyed the storyline and the characters. Jenefer was a strong female heroine that you could look up to. She didn’t need her man to save her. I love stories when the woman can be a strong role model and yet she can still be a woman. This story was entertaining and fun. The characters were engaging and the storyline was so entertaining I read literally in two sittings. Worth the read!! Can’t wait for the next two in the series!

Didn’t finish after chapter 15. I just didn’t like jenefer. When the book first started, I thought jenefer and her cousins were like 14 years old. I thought I was looking at a flashback or something. As the story went on I realized that no this was supposed to be the main characters, warrior adult women. And as I kept reading, jenefer continued to literally act like a preteen.

I get that the author was trying to show us how headstrong and feisty jenefer is. We were told from jenefers pov several times about how she knows she is emotional and fights first, thinks later, etc. But the author was trying way too hard with her and overshot her personality from headstrong and fierce and into whiny baby unable to think logically and control her every whim and emotions.

She truly acted like a child so I could not take her seriously. Tough warrior women don’t have to go around screaming and whining about how amazing they are and how strong they are and how they could defeat anyone anytime anywhere. And how they don’t want to strategize, just fight. She sounds immature and inexperienced. I was hoping Morgan would just throw her in a cell just to shut her up because she was so obnoxious.

I also got so much second hand embarrassment for jenefer and the author when she got completely naked to pretend to be a ghost. Like….that was so strange. Why did she need to be naked? That was just a bizarre choice. I don’t like that the love interest has already seen her naked for one thing. Like that takes away from when they finally get together. It’s Like seeing how the movie ends before watching it.

But also it just made her seem weird and weak and vulnerable when she was caught. It’s like that Seinfeld episode where they talk about good naked and bad naked. This was bad naked. I just didn’t feel like it was necessary. It detracted from the story to me and just felt cringy that she was just sitting there naked in front of her neighbors.

But of course, because this is a romance novel Morgan was getting all turned on by her being naked flailing all around. Even though he supposedly was so depressed by his wife dying. I just don’t know why the authors want to rush into everything. There is insta lust on both their parts because both characters are of course extremely over the top good looking, as is the case in every romance novel. It’s all just uninteresting to me.

The final nail in the coffin was when jenefer breaks into the baby’s room because she thinks she can stop him from crying when the two nurses there can’t get him to stop. And so of course the baby does immediately stop crying when she holds him. It just felt so completely unbelievable and it takes me out of the story. Again with the author trying too hard to paint us a picture. It doesn’t appeal to me. I prefer a realistic story.

Jenefer always assumed Creagor would be hers to rule as one of the warrior daughters of Rivenloch. She grew up skulking around the keep and memorizing each nook and cranny of the land. But when the estate is given to the highlander Morgan Mor mac Giric, a man in mourning and left with a bairn who only reminds him of the woman he lost, Jenefer comes up with what she is sure is a foolproof plan to scare the unwelcome laird back to the highlands he came from. What she doesn't count on is the tenacity of the laird or the effect she has on him and he on her. A battle of wits can only be topped by a loving heart as the young warrior maid becomes the only person who can calm the bawling child the laird has trouble loving and the heart of the man who begins to move past his mourning. One would think this would be the mixture to bring about the perfect love match. But the return of the wicked wife to life with her scheming and conniving ways and the naïveté of the laird in question brings about a whole new set of circumstances and the return of characters from stories past.

The story was a bit over-the-top, but it wouldn't have been as fun and full of humor as it was if it didn't have a touch of the excessive conditions that make this author's stories so refreshing. I loved it from the silliness of the young woman to the brooding man to the exciting conclusion. I'm looking forward to having the time to read the next one in the series.

I'm shocked! Who would like this?!!! The book is written in a very primitive way. If someone is looking for books about real mountaineers - brave and courageous, wants to feel the spirit of the era, then do not read this book. About the highlanders, the author only googled a few words such as “claymore”, “siege”, “ram”... and that’s all. The main character is a soft-bodied, spineless rag, which the author placed in the body of a huge, muscular, handsome man with a claymore, but by all descriptions, he is not a leader, not a leader, not a fighter, he is a bumbler. As for the heroine, the attempt to make her a warrior turned out to be an unceremonious, wild, masculine girl with no complexes, but at the same time a completely spoiled youngster. From the very beginning of the book it was clear that this was not a story about real warriors, but a parody of it, but at least there was humor in the parody... and here it was just the author’s stupid fantasy about two worthless heroes. It felt like it was written by a teenager. The author did not even bother to study the history of Scotland a little and make the plot more realistic. Personally, I regret the time spent and do not recommend reading this author to anyone.

Talk about strong women, Rivenloch is full of them. Jenefer is a fierce warrior and has a fierce temper, but also has a fierce love for the baby that just moved into the castle that she has claimed for her own. The baby's father, Morgan who is a Highlander, is also a fierce warrior and Jenefer has met her match. Morgan's wife has died, and he inherited a castle in the lowlands. On his first night there, an apparition appears. He knows right away that this is no ghost. Jenefer thought the Highlander would be frightened away by a ghost and that she could scare him away from her castle. When he captures Jenefer and her cousins, he isn't sure who is the captive. Jenefer has a way with his son. Poor little guy doesn't have a name and he cries all the time expect when Jenefer holds him. As Jenefer spends her time in "captivity" she realizes that she was wrong about the Highlanders and that maybe force isn't the way to get what she wants. Just when she thinks that things could go her way, Morgan's dead wife comes back to life. What?! What will Jenefer do with her broken heart now? Morgan isn't so sure about his wife now that she is back. What is she up to?

Historically inaccurate

A good story, well written, but full of inaccurate details. I can't remember the exact year she set the book, but lets say 100 years after WILLIAM the bastard 1166. Scotland was feudal, run by Duke doms. This would have been the bronze age I would guess. The dark age doesn't start until the mini ice age in 1330's?. Windows on a castle at that time would have been archers slits at best! No climbing between windows to change rooms! The gazing outside for hours, wouldn't have given much to see. And so on! The characters the men were very toned down for the time and the women--very bold.
At that time, many women who were 'nobility' were married off young in their teens, to politically advantageous men, families. Our warrior was gentle and kind. Our hero females could read and write! One knew martial arts! Come on! Our girl was a master archer. Okay, that might happen.
The wife we would call today psychotic. Not caring about anyone else, and fine killing others, lovers, her children, etc. I doubt they could understand anyone like that.
It is an enjoyable read.

Jenefer is certainly not aftaid to speak her mind--or to go to war almost without provocation! She wants that castle for her own but the king has given the castle to a Highlander and he has already moved in. What she does first is almost unbelievable. She was supposed to wait for her two cousins------not Jenefer! She ends up as a hostage with her two cousins in the castle she is bound and determined to own!

Now all 3 of these woman are really full of tricks--one of them escapes to let their people know what is happening. Meanwhile an infant is crying almost non stop in the room next to where the woman are. Jenefer manages to get into the next room (and not by the door) The baby takes to her immediately--and she to he. Thus starts the romance. Until the Lord's dead wife appears-----a sweetheart she isn't!

All's well that ends well happily ever after--her family knew Jenefer and had petitioned the king. Of course the two lovers did not bother reading the proclamation until after they were totally in love!! You are going to love this ending!

Their Attraction Could Not Be Denied:
A ghostly beginning had this story off to an interesting start and had me hooked from there.
Our highland warrior meets 3 warrior lasses that will change his life forever.
Morgan has brought his clan to claim his castle when he runs into trouble with a feisty warrior woman Jenefer who claims the same castle as belong to her.
I wasn't sure from some of the reviews if I was going to like this story but I sure did. What a thrilling and fun story this was for me to read. Horrible villain like no other, sizzling attraction, passionate intimacy, a couple shocking moments and one that I yelled out loud "Oh No Danger Alert", and so much more.
I really enjoy the entire book and would love to read the next book Bride Of Ice.

I enjoyed this fun, historical romp through 12th Century Scotland. Jenefer was feisty, hot-tempered, and a daring warrior maid who believed disagreements were best settled by combat, or a siege or perhaps even all-out war – rather than wasting time on negotiations.

I enjoyed the early encounters between Jennefer and Morgan (the Highland Laird occupying her castle), as he assumed she was merely a helpless lass, doubting her claims of skill with a bow. With that said, there were also moments that were inconsistent, and some predictability within the plot as well.

Overall, this tale has plenty of drama, some angst, humour, action and conflict along with some steam and a few twists. I loved the tight, sister-like bond between Jenefer and her two warrior maid cousins.
