Black Claw Dragons #1

Her Dragon Daddy

Rate this book
Mav disappeared before I could ever tell him -- about
the child I carried.
I’ve had years to get over him, and I’ve tried.
But the second I see him again my heart lurches -- and it’s like all that time evaporates.
I still burn for him, even though I know it’s a bad idea.

I try to remind myself about the bad things:
his possessiveness,
his quick temper,
but -- he’s different now.
More mature.
Protective.
Settled.

And hiding something...
Something bigger than the child we share...

Allowing him back into my heart could crush me -- but I’ve never felt safer
than when I’m in his arms.
Can I really have the man I love for good?
Or will our past mistakes keep us from a happy future?

Good idea, terrible execution

First of all, this book had a pretty amazing plot. It is your average shifter romance but it checked all the boxes for those that I liked. It isn't all unique in anything outside some key parts with the lore. Mainly in that they do not live all that long. Compared to humans they do but really 200 is nothing. So I liked the fact that they weren't immortal.

Now for what I didn't like. Well, that would be everything else. This story was poorly written and the characters themselves acted more like teens. The writer seemed to have wanted the romance but tried to hard to implement some kind of conflict. This would have been off without the rogue subplot and instead been a story about a women coming back to her hometown and rekindling a romance. But no, we have to throw in a cheating ex husband who basically sells his kid. A nomad group of dragons who want to kill the H. A kid coming to terms that he found his father and is a dragon. Another who has to accept her parents divorced. A plot about a friend and history of abusive relationship.and our h who finds some shady stuff via the dark web. All of these plots and rarely do they interconnect in a way that makes sense. I believe the writer should have focused on one or two of these and went from there. Otherwise they were things that happened but never addressed.
The ex husband never shows up in the book. So why do we care about anything relating to him outside of the fact that they broke up.
The friend, while important, is merely used as a plot device for another book. But we don't get go know her enough to care that she will have her own story.
The children basically disappear by the end of the first few chapters. They played their part and spent majority of their time other places. We don't even get a sense of why they came here in the first place. The son is supposed to be struggling with younger but the first, and only, time he got angry it ended rather quickly.
The rogue dragons plot lasted all of five chapters tops. We got no sense of who they were at all. Even the one who ran to the main group and told them what was going on is easily forgettable.
As for the romance it is there. The more intimate scenes last about two paragraphs and could have easily been cut due to just how bland they are. The conflict was silly. Because of the time skips we really just see them fight right before they make up pages later. They forgive each other but the h constantly gets upset with the H over every little word. She isn't all that strong as a character at all but we are made to believe she is from the amount of times the writer tells us. Seriously couldn't go one chapter without being told how amazing she was in one way or another.

On top of that we do get repetition bits of dialogue. We were told little things over and over again just in different ways. Most of this comes in the form of inner monologues but it is quickly followed by the characters sharing these thoughts right before they inner monologue again. We are told about the sons bad year at least three time chapter one. To which we also get to read as the h either talks to herself about it or others. Relaying the same bit of information over and over again. A part of me thinks that the writer might have forgotten previous scenes cause at one point the h talks to the H about an event that happened only for her to tell him again later on. He acts as though she never spoke to him about it before but it was legit only pages ago that they had discussed this.

All in all, good story, just not a great story. Needs a lot of rework.

Good concept...bad execution

If Roxie Ray is a group of romance authors, they should have known to get a good editor before releasing. The idea behind Her Dragon Daddy was good but the execution was poor. Not so much spelling and grammar but wrong word usage, and even the wrong character's name. Unfortunately, this distracted me enough to detract from my enjoyment.

The funny part is, I'm still tempted to go on with the series, just maybe not straight away. My eye is still twitching from the unnecessary and overly descriptive way things are described, for example - stripped to my birthday suit. While that probably doesn't seem bad, it's stating the bleeding obvious when it's a shifter romance and they are about to shift. When you're in a high intense scene, it seemed more about word count.

One day I shall come back to visit the Black Claw Dragons to see if the editing improved.

I enjoyed this second chance romance. I do so love dragon shifters. I was hooked and read in a day. The sex scenes are decent. I think the oral was steam and others a bit tame, but still hot. I'm looking forward to reading on.

Her Dragon Daddy was such an impulse of a read, a random book I saw being shared on Facebook of all places, but there was something about the trope and the set up of the story that really drew me in. I get so nervous about Secret Baby, but this one here was handled so well. I absolutely adored the way that this one was written and it immediately pulled me into the story. I was so curious to see where the author would take this story. I would say that this one felt like a mix between contemporary and paranormal. In fact, the PNR aspect of it felt like a backdrop and not a center or even close to a primary focus in any way. There is more focus on the romance, character building and family connections. It was a short and sweet delight of a read! Exciting to delve into the rest of the series.

This would of been more for youth if they wrote out the sex scenes not for me

Not my favorite Dragon story I guess I like my dragons Moody ,lonely and a hoarder. These dragons are mommy's boy tied to the apron string. This story has no meat no body it needs more . If a shifter knows when there clan member dies and where they are at wouldn't they know when a new shifter is born of there clan . If he loved Ava he would of look for just to make sure she was okay.

I’m kinda surprised how much I loved this book. I’m not into sweet romances….typically. This won me over.

Lost love. Mav not knowing Made exists. Hailey finding a family. Love reunited.

This is full of love and sweetness and for once it didn’t make me cringe. 😂 loved this feel good read ❤️

Happy reading,

Just remembered why I hate second chance with accidental meeting.

Ended up dnf-ing half way through.

H leaves h, and they don't see each other for 18 years for almost no reason at all (well there was a reason to go away but not to hide and not tell her plus he could have found her in a few years). h couldn't find him, cause when he hid he changed names..

Then they have a chance meeting after moving back to the same town where he is sorry that he hadn't looked for her.. *how romantic*.

Oh and he is so sad he missed out on his seventeen year old kids life.. and he obviously says he would have never left them had he known.

You know what - that's the worst reason. Like - so fine to leave her if she isn't pregnant but "had he known", he wouldn't have...

Finally, she is his fated fated mate.🥲

4 stars**

The story revolves around alpha dragons who are discovering their fated mates, which have traditionally been human females. However, humans are unaware of the dragons' existence and do not feel a bond with them. Thus, dragons can only reveal themselves if they are certain that the woman is the one their fate intended for them.

As these women learn about the new world around them and what it means to be fated, the narrative becomes rich with tension. Each woman also grapples with her own personal challenges, and the dragons will do anything to keep their mates safe.

Emotions run high as the characters confront their circumstances, navigating conflicting feelings of fear, hope, and longing. The presence of strong alpha males adds another layer of complexity to the story.

Amid these challenges, there is an undercurrent of playful interactions. Overall, the narrative is a captivating blend of love, action, and adventure that keeps readers engaged from beginning to end.

What I don’t like;

1) an 18 year separation is way too long for my tastes.
2) the MMC who did the abandoning without a word or trace NEVER looked for the FMC once. His mother looked for her but he absolutely never did.
3) the conflicts this story started with never were resolved. They just are drawn together because of BBS and the PNR “fated mates” bond.
4) basically everything gets swept under the rug for an unearned HEA.

Besides, these major issues I have with the plot line of this book, it is well written in the sense that there are no grammar issues. It’s too naively handled by the author. No hard conversations between the MMC and his son or the FMC. Everyone is just accepting it as normal. I liked the writing and shallow characters but not the easy resolution of the plot conflict. I also don’t like that the FMC forgave the MMC’s mother, father and older brother, who also abandoned her without a word so easily.

The MMC’s excuse was that he was afraid for the FMC, okay fine, and then just figured she moved on over the passing of the years. This is still just a lazy cop out IMO. His parents had no such excuse other than loyalty to the MMC. HOWEVER, you can’t push the “she was the daughter we never had” line and then fuck off to nowhere land without a backwards glance, and a barely there “I’m sorry” when you meet again. The older brother axel is a nonentity as he has literally no presence in this entire book. The 17 years younger brother is an innocent bystander to events that happened when he was too young to have any understanding of them so for him I give a hard pass.

But back to the parents, the mother EVENTUALLY, went looking for the FMC but never found her. I can’t understand why, because if she was faking an attempted purchase of FMC’s property, then a realtor would have made some contact with the her and would have presumably passed on contact details. But in the end it’s not clear how a property owner was simply “not found”. Smh. As for the MMC’s dad James, this moron as the sheriff, had an ENTIRE TOWN’s worth of people asking him about his grandson for YEARS and he just thought these people were simply confusing him with the previous sheriff. I cannot laugh hard enough for this absurd rationalization.

The first year of this, I can maybe agree with his thoughts on it, but YEARS of this!?! HELLO, isn’t it your job to ask questions? You don’t say, what grand son to anyone asking about your grand son? You don’t ask, why do you think I have a grandson?? I’m at a loss on how these characters claim continuous misunderstandings, miscommunications, actions that are detrimental to others but absolutely were for self preservation, as innocent missteps when they weren’t??

Why couldn’t they leave the FMC a note of goodbye? If not a letter as they left so flipping fast then why not call her a week or two later? Hell, they could have called her grandmother as she lived there until she died for decades, if you didn’t want to speak with the FMC directly because you’re a bunch of cowards would have been something at least! No attempt to mitigate or minimize the damage to the FMC they thought of as family was ever made!!

So my main huge gripe is that this book just does a drive by of I’m sorry’s for ALL of this and it’s autobahn driving its way to an artificial HEA. It could have been so much better if these issues hadn’t been treated as so blasé. If I wanted an easy story line I wouldn’t have chosen a story with a betrayal plot line of this magnitude. Just saying. I’m new to this author as well, so as now I see her books are fluff PNR, I won’t be all that interested in her stories now that I know she won’t do them justice. I’ll look for her plot lines that are less heavy and give those a try, if I want a lite read. This book is well written even if it was more insta than it should have been. Good luck.

Despite the word "daddy" in the title, there is no daddy kink

Its just a romance between two high school sweethearts that reconnected after 17 long years. I'm not a huge fan of second chance romances, and this one didn't work for me either.

I'm digging the dragon shapeshifter part though so I'll stick around for another book or so

It was just ok

Did you ever feel like a book is missing something. Well for me this book fell short of emotions. I'm not sure why the Author chose for Ava not to where her emotions on her sleeve and act out. I mean come on. These people abandon you 19 years earlier and you just call right back into all of them.

Just disappointed.

Maverick and Ava were in love until tragedy pulled them apart. I love how strong Ava is despite all she endured. The chemistry is unmistakable between both. This world of dragon shifters is well written. I enjoyed the story.

Nice little read. Of course, expect the worldbuilding to be delivered in an info dump kind of way, but I took it all in my stride as it fit the light atmosphere of the story. However, don't expect angst, whatever the blurb may suggest. The author chose to go on the path of 'we deal with our issues in an adult and calm way' and 'once everything is explained, everything is okay'. That's certainly one way to go but after the teasing blurb, as an angst enthusiast, I do feel a bit disappointed. I actually felt that the H's explanations on why he disappeared and kept away were very wholesome. Not exciting or emotionally-provoking, but sedately plausible.

I however disliked at the beginning how everyone in the dragon clan, including the H himself, first reaction was, 'how could she have hidden your child from you?!?' - which of course makes no sense when (a) they disappeared overnight without a message or explanation to the h, and without a forwarding address, and (b) they never actively tracked her down. 🙄🙄🙄

The writing style was quite candid, which on the up side means some honest storytelling. However, on the down side, it also meant some awkward over-descriptions of every little practical details (e.g. where they stock their clothes for their after-shift, that his mother will come and ensure there are always clothes etc). Sometimes when reading books, I have to fight hard to fill in the blanks of things left unsaid but which keeps me wondering. Here, it was the reverse experience, where every trivia is explained to you (sometimes twice!) even the ones I did not wonder about 😅! Maybe some editing would have helped with a better balance of what to disclose, or at least, have the message come across as more polished?

In sum, not a bad book, eminently readable as a quick, no stress read!

Ava is a newly divorced mother of two who has decided to move back into her family home in the town of black claw. While settling into her home she bumps into her first love who happens to be the father of her 17-year-old son. Maverick Kingston realizes that his long-lost love has moved back into town; he goes on a mission to woo her back into his life. But with the discovery of his long-lost son and a secret that he has kept for 18 years. Will love conquer all or will a deep dark secret destroy any chance that either of them has for a happy ending?

One of the things that I did not like about this book is that it is way too short. I felt the author didn't really go into detail about the emotional baggage that the main characters had over their relationship. So issues were resolved very quickly and with not much fanfare. The sex scenes weren't as intense and graphic as I'm accustomed to in paranormal romances.

I enjoyed the relationship between Ava and her children. They have a very loving relationship and you can tell that Maddox her son is very loving and protective which is endearing. Haley (Ava's daughter) has a very Innocent but yet intelligent personality which is very cute especially since she kind of cuts the tension in scenes. The description of how the alpha dragons look is beautiful. Specifically, that their scales are black but they become iridescent when light hits them. The romance that Ava and Maverick have in the book, you can tell that he is very remorseful and has an intense love for Ava. I found the dialogue between Maverick and his Dragon to be cute and amusing. Though his dragon is this tough Alpha you see a softer side to him when he interacts with Ava.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. Because the plot is lacking and the story moves way too quickly. But the background story of the dragons and the main characters were pretty good and really all you needed for being such a short story. This is a book series that I'm planning on continuing to read because I did find the story as a whole good.

I recommend this book for anybody who loves paranormal romances. That want to read a quick story that'll satisfy their addiction. But I don't recommend this for anyone who needs a very intricate plot and super intricate universe.

Really don't know why Shifter books have to be so childish. The writing and character's are so juvenile and immature. The hero is supposed to be a 36 year old man yet he sounds and behaves like his teenage son. His own parents treat him like his a child. His dragon is just as childish, acts like a five year old. it's awful, not at all enjoyable. Really cringingly embaressing to read.

I don't know if these books are written by teenagers, or its that the so called author's writing is just very immature and unprofessional but I'm really struggling to find any decent Shifter books.

The writing is very repetitive, I must have read a dozen times on the first six pages that her sin had a rough year, his past year had been rough, the last year had been really rough on him, with the rough year he'd had, blah blah blah.. It was even repetitive with things repeated on the same page.

No ppropriate behaviour by the characters, the mother chuckles when she says it was like loosing a daughter? Yeah, because loosing a daughter is something to chuckle about, right? No. Eye roll awfulness. No depth, no quality to the writing. So immature it's cringingly embarrassing to read, and on the whole completely boring because it was mostly just reading the characters doing mundane daily tasks, like cooking, showering, shopping, dressing etc. Gave up at 30%, so can't comment on the rest but no story at that point. Very boring.

I don’t even know why I’ve just finished this. I saw the reviews and though, eh, why not? I need something quick and light to pull my attention bc I’ve been struggling to read.

But sheesh. Look, I can deal with fast paced even though I prefer more world building generally, but there’s just a whole lot going on in this. Ava got pregnant at 18 by a dragon shifter who bolted at 18 because he nearly killed someone. She stayed for a couple years and raised her son but moved because it was too much being in the same town with him all the time. She gets married to some jerk, has her daughter and they later divorce. Maddox has anger issues, much like his dad so she moves back to the small town. The whole thing just kinda spirals from here, they accept everything so quickly and it’s just a bit like 🤔. Apparently she’s his fated mate but he also wants to cool things off with her because an old threat comes back. I dunno, I’m just really struggling to process what the hell I’ve just read.

Anyway, safe to say it’s not for me..

4⭐ because she caved too quickly😅

A nice second chance standalone PNR. I liked all the single mum story, struggling, and how independent is the FMC.

The only thing I didn't really like is how fast she accepted the guy back into her life. Yeah, I'm a resentful b*tch and he has an excuse to disappear but none for never contacted her again (or a poor one in my opinion).

Anyway, I like this book and I will for sure read Charlotte's story!!!

It’s giving werewolf vibes, but dragons?
Overall a cute, short, lighthearted story with no major world building so very quick and easy read!

Not something I’m aching to read the next in the series of, however I will eventually read the next book!

Was chuckling at a lot of the quotes 😮‍💨🫣

A must read

Yes! Totally loved this read! Be prepared to be in the feels! dammit I cried like 5-6 times throughout the book. Emotional ain't even the word, ugh. I loved our fmc, talk about tough independent mom who does w.e it takes to take care and love her children. I think that was the biggest selling point for me, she was a true mother, her son, a true big brother! These characters just grab onto it heartstrings and pulled. Their was no bitterness with ava, she was not about to hold her kids back or have harsh feelings that stood in the way of her kids and everyone around her being happy. Just and all around amazing book with the most likable and loveable characters. First read from this author and totally amazing.

These series feel a bit formulaic by this writing group. The first book is secret baby (Her Dragon Daddy and Daddy Biker Bear). The second is protective whatever (Protector Bear and Her Dragon Protector). This just seems like a lack of creativity/originality. Going through the motions, even. If this is a collective, I would think that there would be more opportunity for diverse stories. Also, the whole dark web thing was silly. Like the dark web is completely separate from the internet or has a specific website or password to enter. Think I'm done with these authors for a while, if not permanently.

Adult Disney Bedtime Story

This is a good, light, fluffy, easy read. The overall premises of the storyline was good.

Unfortunately, the storyline and characters lacked depth. Romance? Nope. Mystery? Nope. Drama? Nope. Suspense? Nope. Love? Yes

There wasn’t anything to love or hate about any of the characters they were so flat.

People that described this novel as pornographic or erotica have no idea what porn or erotica is this is so far from that spectrum. However, I do understand not everyone wants to read sexual scenes. Authors should make appropriate “warnings” in their descriptions.

The few sex scenes there were were so lack luster they could be removed or toned down to make this book into PG-16 or YA. Easily replaced with “they had sex” that’s how bland these scenes were. Nothing was purring here.

The climatic bad guy ending and what they did was glossed over Disney style.

I started skimming I was so bored and didn’t miss a beat, never had to go back to understand what I missed. Started to read Book 2 to see if there is any change in writing
The whole novel had a Disney-esque feel to it with an adult theme.

Started to read Book 2 to see if there is any change in writing…nope. So I will not continue with this series. This was just too light and airy for me, I need more substance.

Editing overall was great - caught one syntax error which could have easily been an autocorrect take over. There was a name mix up, as well as some minor inconsistencies in the storyline.

Gave 2 Stars because I don’t hate the novel, but not a fan either.

It’s okay. I’ve read better, and I’ve read worse. I’m honestly shocked that this has over 4 stars on GR and Amazon.

To start off, I absolutely love dragons and shifters; so, of course I had to read this book when my neighbor offered me a copy! Truthfully, though, I’m disappointed.

This author seems to be young and inexperienced, both in life and in writing, based on this book. There was so much lacking throughout this book. If the ages of the characters hadn’t been stated at the beginning, I would have thought they were all the same age by the way they all spoke and acted - from 8 years to 60 somethings. The plot was incredibly predictable and dull, the “spicy” scenes were just plain and boring with the imagination of a 14 year old, the way the entire book was written could be easily read by a 1st grade level reader… and this was intended as an adult novel?? It’s such an easy read, I read this in its entirety in well under a day.

Overall, it’s dull. It’s boring. But if you’re looking for a time filler, it’s not the worst read in the world.

Loved it!

Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Trope: secret baby, shifter
Angst: 😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥

This is actually the second time I've read this book and I liked it as much the second time as I did the first. Love secret baby tropes and this one did not disappoint. Liked that she didn't try to keep the baby from him and had tried to find him at first. Cute storyline and moved quickly. Will definitely be reading the next one!

Terrible

I wanted to like it, but I couldn’t just get past the reasoning for abandoning his mate like that. His family knew yet made a childish terrible decision just to leave her, no note, not coming back to get her once she turned 18. They were already preparing to let her in as mate before he had his first shift and would have known she was a fate mate. Just did her wrong and it was terrible. Won’t read another book by this author.
