Low on the steam, HIGH on the cuteness, Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts is a charming, humorous story about

one grumpy-as-fuck Miami SWAT officer

AND

his geeky but adorable neighbor.

Spencer has been noticing the beefy, serious Quinn for a solid year. Too bad Quinn doesn't know Spencer exists.

Quinn is really into his work, until a shooting leaves him helpless and convalescing in his flat.

Enter Spencer, bearing brownies. But that's AFTER.

First, it's enter Quinn to the vision of Spencer baking said brownies and dancing while wearing nothing but his super hero tighty whities. And an apron.

There's a lot to like about this story, including the sharp writing, a big, boisterous Cuban family with a mama bear who thinks everyone is too skinny, and a pissed off Quinn standing up for his ... almost boyfriend.

However, I was a bit confused regarding the stripping thing. Why didn't Quinn tell Spencer about the party, and how did he not recognize Spencer?

Quinn's friend Javier (instigator of the infamous stripping incident) pissed me off something fierce. Thank god Quinn kicked his ass.

I enjoyed this opposites-attract story. It made me laugh out loud. I just wanted more steam and a stronger ending.

Sequel, please?

Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts is a sweet opposites attract story of Quinn and Spencer. Spencer has had a crush on his neighbor Quinn for a while and after Quinn is injured in the line of duty Spencer is able to be there for him.

This was such a delightful little treat. For a short story it certainly delivered. It had:

*Great characters
*Relationship development. I loved the way she brought them together.
*Humor
*Teensy bit of angst
*Nice feel good vibe. I had a perma-grin almost the entire time I was reading it!

My only complaint: I sure wish it was longer. I would have loved a full-length story of these two. They were so lovable!

This was actually my first Charlie Cochet and I now know why she has such a strong fan base. Her writing just flows. I am very much looking forward to reading more from her. Overall this was a 4.3 star read for me.

'The way to a man's heart is through his stomach.'
Quinn, a grumpy Miami SWAT officer, has been shot several times on the job and now all he wants is to be left alone to recover in peace. The thing is, his large Cuban family keeps fusing over him and then a geeky neighbor comes into his life.

Spencer has been crushing on his hot neighbor since he moved in next to him a year ago. The current situation gives Spencer courage to finally talk to Quinn. Plus, he genuinely wants to help the guy when he's injured. After an awkward accident they have in the kitchen he decides to use food as a way to apologize and get close to him.

They start spending a lot of time with each other and Spence slowly makes his way into Quinn's heart.

Javier, Quinn's "friend", is such an annoying douchebag. I'm glad Quinn took care of the whole bullshit and punched him in the face. How dare he make fun of sweet Spencer.

Overall, it's a totally enjoyable and adorable read. There's humor and some sexy times. Also, the characters are great. I liked it a lot, I only wish it was longer!

You are spot on Spencer, this was fun! I always get a bit nervous reading books with law enforcement MC's. Why? Well, it's completely personal. It's not something I usually share so, I'm sure you don't know this about me.
But, this is my hubby's work attire...

Unless you've sewn your spouses' blood type onto their clothing, you truly can't understand how the career impacts your life.
SWAT story? I can totally relate.

I'm not sure what I enjoyed more, the insight shown regarding challenges cops struggle with nowadays or the belly laughs that I was helpless to contain. A couple of Quinn's lines resonated hard and I had to fight the tears prickling at the corners of my eyes. I don't think he could have said it any better and I wanna hug Charlie for creating a strong fierce (grumpy) man to express such thoughts. Thanks for showing some love, in my opinion they can't get enough right now.

So yeah, Quinn is an ornery bear after he is injured in the line of duty. He was shot several times and is laid up for a few months. But that was cool with me, I kinda like me a grumpy bear. Poking a grouchy bear can be exhilarating and result in exhaustion from sweaty extra-circular activities *wink wink* His younger, quirky, perky neighbor Spencer decides this is his window to slip into the hunky cop's radar. For some reason, Quinn never paid Spencer any notice before, but Spencer makes a first impression that he won't soon forget.

I giggled, I chuckled, and I nearly fell onto the floor from body shaking convulsions. It was refreshing and FUN.

Spencer is absolutely endearing, even when he creates one disaster after another. The thing is...he has the biggest heart ever and he wants to share it with Quinn. It doesn't take long for Quinn to realize that this compassionate tender soul stirs more than his arousal. He stirs something deeper, something he didn't think he wanted until Spencer stumbled into his life. Yep, he wants more than the man's brownies.

The Cuban family made my smile even bigger. I adored each and every one of them. The guys from the team? Course there always has to be that one jerk, and this time I wanted to punch him in the face. Thank you Quinn.

This was sweet, hilarious, and just what I needed. If you like big men getting swept off their feet by the little guy, I think you're gonna love this one too.

Graphic designer Spencer has lusted after his Miami SWAT team neighbor, Quinn, since moving into the building a year ago.

The naturally-terse Quinn is home-bound after being shot in the line of duty, trying his best to get friends and family to leave him (the fuck) alone to convalesce in peace.

But Spencer feels bad for Quinn and wants to help him during his recovery, even if spending time with the man only ends up with them being friends.

Spencer worming his way into Quinn's life with good food and an easy companionship was very entertaining to watch.

Up until the first two-thirds of this short read, I found every aspect of the story to be spot on.

It had the right amount of slow burn, the pacing kept me on the edge of my seat, the guys got to know one another over pleasant dinners and movie nights. And Quinn didn't let his walls down too soon, so it wasn't an instal-love situation.

However, in the last portion of the book, namely from the moment when they finally kiss, the remainder of the story felt extremely rushed.

After the interrupted kiss, the book only mentions in passing that they'd made out a few more times. *sigh*

Then we find out it's been two full weeks since the first kiss and we get zero details regarding romance, talks, feelings. Nada.

And then Quinn's grating asshole friend, Javier, pulls a complete dick move on Spencer at Quinn's birthday party, which causes Spencer to flee from embarrassment and an aching heart.

Then the make up and forgiveness scene, which turns into the first and only sex scene of the book, felt very abrupt and the story is over.

If the last parts of the book had been like the first, this would have easily been a 5-star rating.

But sadly, this short novella finished out at around 3.25 *Magic-Mike-with-your-Mama* stars for me.

"Miércoles!" (You have to read the book to figure out what that means, other than "Wednesday.")

I really owe Stacy a lot for getting this one under my radar. 😍 I’ve owned this audio for a while and I purchased it back then because the title was so cute and it was only $1.99 with whispersync. 😉 But since Stacy told someone this is her favorite listen on MMAudible group on Facebook, I knew I gotta bump this up to my TBL short list. 😌 And what a fun, little sexy listen this is! 😍 I really wish this is a full-length novel because I can’t get enough of Spencer and Quinn. The title of the book pretty much explains everything. Quinn is a Miami SWAT officer who has to rest at home “grumpily” because of his leg injury and Spencer is the next door neighbor geek who smothered Quinn with his divine cooking and unending affection. 😂 Of course, the first encounter was hilarious! 😁 I mean the geek and the jock so what do you expect? 😎 It was endearingly awkward and funny. And things develop rather quickly from that! Finally our all-o-mighty SWAT officer had to give in to the inescapable nerdy charms of Spencer. 😁 This is such a low-angst, sweet and endearing listen. I really loved it so much even Quinn’s arseholian friend Javier couldn’t annoy me from enjoying the hell out of this shortie. Michael Stellman did a lovely job narrating the story and I couldn’t recommend this enough for a short, fun and sweet listen. 😌😘

This was a light, fluffy, fun read and I really enjoyed it, but I do have a few complaints that took away some of the joy.

Gruff, cranky Quinn, a macho SWAT team member sidelined from active duty after being shot, is entirely too caustic for sweet, nerdy Spencer in the beginning. I actually didn't warm up to him until the end of the book. I am surprised Spencer waited him out actually! But the HEA made me smile.

Quinn's rowdy SWAT buddies rubbed me the wrong way and treated Spencer terribly. I hated seeing the light and laughter leave that sweet boy, even for a minute.

But, don't take this one too seriously and sit back and relax for some fluffiness! A perfect palate cleanser after a angst-filled read.

I listened to the 2:30 hours (~ 90 pages) novella audiobook nicely narrated by Michael Stellman of Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts and I just smiled. This was so sweet romantic and just the way we want life to turn sometimes. Surprising opposite attraction and you never knows how life have there for you.

Perfect doing chores a Sunday afternoon. — Maybe forgotten tomorrow but nice and heartwarming as long it lasted.

Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts is a sweet little contemporary from the amazing Charlie Cochet. I love contemporary and I love Charlie’s THIRDS series, so I had a feeling this would be the perfect little story for me.

I was right.

Quinn, a Miami SWAT officer, is injured on the job. When his brother-in-law drops off meds for him, he runs into Quinn’s new neighbor, Spencer, who has a crush on Quinn. Quinn’s brother-in-law asks Spencer to give Quinn his meds, which is how the two officially meet.

It goes badly, to say the least. The gruff Quinn and awkward Spencer don’t hit it off straight away. But after a little encouragement from his friend, Danny, Spencer decides he isn’t going to give up.

Quinn and Spencer were really sweet together. And in true Charlie Cochet fashion, I couldn’t stop myself from falling in love with them as a couple, even if I wanted to.

I loved Quinn’s family, especially his parents. They were big, loving and supportive, which is how families should be, in my opinion.

Javier, Quinn’s friend, was an ass. I whooped so hard when Quinn punched him. It was a long time coming and definitely had to be done. I think he’s getting his own book, so it’ll be interesting to see how that works.

My mouth was watering a lot while reading this, especially when there was talk of brownies.

A copy of this book was provided by Dreamspinner Press in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I'm a sucker for the geek gets the hot guy stories. I eat 'em right up. This was very well done, but just too short. The dialogue was fun and I liked both MCs in spite of Quinn being a grumpy Gus. Could have used some more sexy times, but luckily I have a huge porn collection to see me through times like these.

Short but sweet, if Charlie Cochet ever wants to write more Spencer and Quinn I’ll be ready to read it!

After seven years on Miami SWAT, Quinn is injured in the line of duty and stuck in his apartment recovering and growing crankier by the day. His large family means well, but they are driving him crazy. New Jersey transplant Spencer has been secretly crushing on his next door neighbor for a year now. With a little push from his friend and neighbor Danny, Spencer is determined to help Quinn out while he recovers, even though Quinn probably doesn’t know Spencer exists. His first attempt ends in near disaster, but Spencer knows the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and puts his cooking talents to good use.

Quinn is pleasantly surprised as he gets to know the awkward neighbor he never gave a second thought to. As Spencer quickly becomes an important part of Quinn’s daily routine, Quinn’s meddling family and co-workers are either trying to push them together or pull them apart. When Quinn’s “friend” Javier goes too far, Quinn will do anything necessary to save the relationship.

I read this in one sitting and had a smile on my face almost the entire time. Spencer has an inner strength that is at odds with his klutzy exterior. He is funny, caring and a bit insecure, but he is not going to let anyone walk all over him and not going to change anything about himself, including his superhero t-shirts and underwear. Quinn’s stubborn tough guy exterior is no match for Spencer’s charms or brownies.

The flirting starts almost immediately and the sexual tension is thick, but the men spend a lot of time getting to know each other. I loved their back and forth and thought that Charlie Cochet did a great job in developing a friendship first and really making me feel like I got to know the men before moving the relationship to the next step, something I don’t always find in short stories.

Quinn’s large Cuban family, especially his mother, is like a whirlwind, descending all at once and jumping loudly into his business to add some wonderful moments of horror for Quinn while leaving Spencer a bit shell shocked. The other members of his SWAT team that Quinn considers friends are a mixed bag, with one particularly vile member looking to cause trouble and testing Quinn and Spencer’s new bond.

There was nothing I didn’t like about this story and I could have easily read much more. It was a perfect blend of humor, great characters, a little bit of drama and some sweet, sexy times.

Set in sunny Florida, Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts is a heart-warming and sexy opposites-attract novella, following a broody SWAT officer from a big vivacious Cuban family as he unexpectedly falls for his fairly geeky but ever-so-sweet neighbour, whom becomes his friend and biggest support after he’s injured on the job.

This was quick and easy reading, with a solid set-up, a large cast of entertaining secondary characters, and a polar-opposites pairing who held me engaged and eager witness how they’d work things out. I enjoyed this, although I could have done without that prick Javier. *grumbles*

Note: I read the first edition of this story so I can’t be sure if the latest second edition (2020) is simply a new cover upgrade or new/extended content.

A feel-good story with an okay plot which is low on the angst. The best thing that this short has to offer is that it did not try to squeeze everything in -- which should be expected of a short.

Ahhhhhhh, this was just too cute! I finished this and immediately re-read it. I rarely, rarely do that.

I don't know what else to say except this was way too short because I want more of these guys. Spencer is super sweet and is insecure about his sexual allure I guess you could say. He wants to have Quinn notice him and like him and dreams of the time when Quinn will see him as someone who can be his partner.

After the unfortunate accident that leaves Quinn on medical leave from the SWAT team, Spencer gets his chance. And Quinn is no dummy - he sees that Spencer is adorable and that he really cares for Quinn. I just wanted to give Spencer a great big hug! And that ending, well almost ending with the sailor outfit and the music. Confused? You'll just have to read it to find out. I was blushing. :D

I really hope there are more books set in this world Charlie created. Highly recommend. This is a HFN, but clearly they are meant for each other. ;)

In a word, this is cute. Very cute.

Also slightly unsatisfying. Rushed romance that lacks any meaningful character interaction, a rushed ending, a bizarre stripping scene that still doesn't make much sense to me. But it's innocuous. If you're looking for a fluffy, short read that's relatively angst-free, and you're a fan of the whole "buff straight-gay meets nerdy twink", this might do it for you.

Not one I'll bother visiting again, so Removed from Kindle.

Really not good.

The opening scene was all high-octane action, and then the rest of the book was lame TV-movie romcom. Spencer's personality was that he was a clumsy babbler who could cook, while Quinn was the alpha-type placeholder.

And that scene? With the

Think about this well-drawn character: Quinn is Cuban-American, completely fluent in Spanish, and they’re in Miami, so why did he address a traumatized little boy in English until the kid let him know that he only spoke Spanish? Because bad writing that's why.

This is sweet, a little silly, and has wonderful characterization.

I think I liked Quinn's mama, Mimi, the best. She's closely followed by Danny, Spencer's best friend.

Despite the brevity of the story, each character feels real and important in the lives of Spencer and Quinn. The prose itself felt a bit clunky and stunted here and there, but the dialogue definitely works.

Light on angst and action, medium on the emotion scale, and top of the pops on the sweets.

Whenever you're in the mood for a quick little snack, this'll fit the bill.

Cute, feel good, and quite funny despite a meddling prick of an asshole friend who can’t mind his own damn freakin beeswax!!! Can you say cringe worthy rage?? I can’t even.

Sweet, kind Spencer has a serious crush on his neighbor, and Quinn’s on the job injury is definitely the perfect opportunity to get to know him.

Grumpy, loner Quinn is skeptical of his strange neighbor, especially after a disastrous first meeting. However Spencer’s tenacity surprises both of them, and as they get to know each other, sparks fly.

I can’t ignore that horrible situation stated above as much as I want to. Otherwise, this was a very enjoyable short.

Funny scenes, sweet moments and scorching times. You definitely can tell this is a Charlie Cochet shorty story. This was a cute novella. I really liked the character development that we got for Spencer and Quinn. Spencer was adorable in his chef aprons and super hero clothing. I did see some similarities between him and another character of hers, but that's her comfort zone it seems like. Quinn was uber hot. I liked him alot, I thought his beginning sexy was extremely sweet. Loved seeing Quinn's family rain down terror on him. I enjoy reading about families, and Quinn's were no different. I think where Spencer lacked masculinity he made up for it in confidence.I'd love to see this as a full length novel, sequel or even catching up with more characters especially Javier and Quinn's cousin. What was that all about? LOL.

This was a short cute novella that proved that the way to a particular grumpy man's heart was through his stomach. Quinn and Spencer's first meeting ends with near disaster despite being hilarious. But thank goodness for determined young men and broody injured patients - it all worked out in the end. It was low angst, low steam but full of sweet and adorable moments! I loved it! Plus all the food mentions made for delicious evening!

Thought it was time to read this sort of intro into the Four Kings world.

It's a fabulous opposites attract romance which has a really sweet organic relationship build up between Spencer and his injured SWAT team neighbour Quinn.

Loved seeing how their relationship, as they're already together in the later books, began

Belens Audio Book Review

Michael Stellman delivers a sweet performance of this cute novella.

When Miami SWAT officer Julian “Quinn” Quintero is shot in the line of duty during a raid he's laid up out of work until he heals up. When his brother in law tries to drop off a prescription but can't get Quinn to open his door, he ends up leaving the medicine with Quinn's next door neighbor, Spencer Morgan.

Spencer has noticed the hot officer and his 8-pack for over a year, but, unfortunately Quinn's never noticed him. Until now. When hot officer and computer geek meet it's a humorously epic disaster. When Spencer returns to Quinn to apologize, and help out, the two begin spending time together and getting to know one another.

For those looking for some hot sexy times, there's nothing spicy happening until the end, but it's really fluid the way it happens. I liked that their relationship grew and developed naturally. The only complaints I have is I wish the last third of the story didn't feel so rushed, and I didn't buy that Spencer would have been so naïve with the stunt Javier pulls at the end.

That aside, I enjoyed this - it was cute and sweet with a little heat at the end. I just would have enjoyed a little more heat, if you know what I'm sayin'.

if you know what I'm sayin

As for the narration Stellman does a good job, but not stellar in the accent area. I may be biased having been raised in Miami, but his Cuban accent needs a lot of work.

It's fluffy and low angst and I would definitely recommend it for a quick listen on a commute.

Recommended.

It's okay, I guess *shrugs*. It has its cute moments. The stripping scene in the end is SO bizarre though. It is rushed and happens quite a sudden. I wonder if it is because the author was struggling to find a conflict somehow, especially since the tone was pretty light before that.

Spencer is the sunshine of this book, all the rating stars I gave is for him only. Or maybe Quinn's boisterous family as well. As for Quinn, I thought he was kinda rude. Not like he pays attention to Spencer before, does he? His friend Javier is a jackass too. In fact, I wasn't really happy at all with Quinn, I sort of wanted Spencer to find someone else who is worthy of him and his kind heart.
