The wife of the recently retired baseball legend shares behind-the-scenes stories and personal anecdotes of his twenty-seven-year career, from their first date to his final major-league game.
I’m a Texas Rangers fan so remembered great times while Nolan Ryan was with the team. For the most part, I loved this book, reading about their lives as kids in Alvin, their young and long enduring love, and all about Ryan’s baseball career. As the title indicates, much of the book was about how Ruth basically gave up her college and career ambitions due to the craziness that involves being married to a pro athlete in order to ‘cover home’. Although I thought it was a tad self-indulging at times, overall I admire any woman that has to juggle raising three kids, handling about all the household duties, moving numerous times, and enduring an oft absent husband during the season. When Ryan retired and moved into the Rangers front office, I always loved seeing them sitting in the stands, watching the games. They always appeared to be such a classy and humble couple.
They say opposites attract and after reading Nolan Ryan's autobiography and now his wife's I understand how they are a perfect example. Nolan is reserved and from his book all I found out was his stats and what he did. It was totally void of his personality. Ruth is perky and doesn't seem to hold anything back. She is charming and exactly what I think a baseball wife needs to be like.
A sweet memoir by Ruth Ryan chronicling her life with the famous, record breaking Nolan Ryan. There are many glimpses into their home life, their baseball life and marriage as she tells things from her point of view. I appreciate that they stayed down home with real values of God, country and family despite wealth and fame. A must read if you are a Nolan Ryan fan and an interesting read if you are just a casual fan.
