Picked this up on a whim and holy hell I didn't expect to like this that much, it's about dragon slaying, pretty standard right? Well the guy in this is a complete wimp he can't do anything for himself instead he's the sidekick to a 12 year old girl. It's great, there is a twist halfway through that changes everything.

Suddenly something is spurred onto him and he must act, which I loved. This is my first Square Enix manga and if the rest of their catalogue is anywhere close to this good, I must check it out!

Decent start with some time travel elements to the story that could make this interesting. Did feel one of the character's decisions (to separate from the person he most cared about) felt a bit out of character. Will pick up the next volume.

Maybe it was the scanlation, but this was not working for me. I will give it another couple volumes just to be sure, but the writing style just wasn’t working for me. It’s like if you combined the writing styles of MHA and Demon Slayer. Mostly action, dialogue bubbles make it hard to tell if it’s an inner monologue or not. But that could be the scanlation having issues. Now I’ve got the physical books 2-8 so we’ll see hope it goes.

Ragna Crimson Review

2/5 stars

This will be a spoiler free review. Onto the review!

I read three volumes of this manga and stopped there because I really did not like it that much. The basic premise is that there are these dragons who are attacking the human planet where our main character is from. The main character, Ragna, is a warrior who fights dragons to try and drive them off of his planet. (Side note: all dragons in this series have both a dragon form and a human-like form)

We learn pretty quickly that the dragons aren't just attacking this planet for no reason. They serve a god that rules over the entire universe. This god has an image in their mind of what the universe should look like, and it doesn't match the way the universe is now. If something needs to be created to fit the god's vision, the dragons have to find a way to make that thing. If something needs removed, the dragons have to destroy it. The human planet Ragna lives on is one of the things that does not exist in the god's view, so the dragons are tasked with killing all the humans.

I was really intrigued by that concept. It sounded really cool. But unfortunately, this series just wasn't working for me. Most of the drawings were of the characters against a white background. I went through one of the volumes I read to try and figure out how many drawings of the background there was, and I counted six. I have no idea where these people and dragons were, or what was around them, aside from being told in dialogue that they were in a city.

I couldn't get immersed in the world because I don't know what the world looks like. We only ever got one or two images of the crowd in this city, despite there being many scenes that supposedly take place amongst the crowd. Where were all the people? Why was it just a blank white background most of the time?

In addition to that, we were introduced to a whole bunch of dragons with all different kinds of magical powers right away. We don't get to discover them over time. They're all just lined up next to each other, with boxes explaining who they are and what they do. It felt like the author was trying to create more new character designs for the fun of it, but then didn't want to take a whole lot of time to give them all backstory.

That aspect of the story reminded me a lot of when I read My Hero Academia about five years ago. Too many characters got introduced, and none of them were really explained. In contrast, my first ever manga, Naruto, had a lot of characters and every single one of them got a really detailed backstory. I wish this was more like Naruto in that regard, because it made me not care about any of these people and dragons.

There was also something going on in regards to time travel that hadn't quite been fully explained yet. I got the feeling in the first volume that this would be something to explore later, but as I went on, it never got explained. And then more time travel stuff kept happening with little to no explanation. This made me very lost and confused to the point where I no longer cared that much about the plot. I'm pretty sure it would have eventually made sense if I kept reading, but I really didn't care to get to that point.

Also, apparently an anime came out last year for this series. I might give the first episode a try in case the anime is better than the manga. Maybe the anime fixes some of the things I didn't like about the manga.

I think if you like manga like My Hero Academia or Demon Slayer where it's all about the action and cool characters, but character development is left a little bare, you'll probably enjoy this series. But sadly, I did not have a good time with it and will not be continuing.

Have a nice day/night everyone!

A really promising start. This guy taking care of this little girl was a little bit creepy at first but a few moments later I could only view it as being cute because if you consider how mighty this little pretty girl is EVERYBODY WOULD BOW DOWN TO SERVE!!! A few heart breaking moments later the dragon hunting adventure is intensified! How I hope he keeps the dark future at bay but hell maybe the shore being washed over with absolute darkness will be more entertaining. Looking forward to reading more.

Ragna Crimson is a sword and magic fantasy manga created by Daiki Kobayashi. It follows a dragon slaying knight named Ragna, who wants to rid the world of dragon, and bring peace to his land, or the entire world for that matter. The manga is collected in 11 separate volumes and has entered its final arc. It should conclude in the spring of 2022. It will have an anime adaptation in 2023, but the exact date still hasn’t been revealed.

Ragna, at the start of the manga, is small fry. He works as a sort of side kick to his genius, prodigy friend Leo, short for Leonica. Leo picked him up one day, seeing him getting beat by a bunch of kids. She asked him if he wanted to hunt dragons with her, and he accepted. Everything beats bullying. Leo’s motivation is very simple and very shonen, she wants to be the strongest person in existence. To prove herself as the strongest, she just has to destroy every single dragon there is. She is already the number 1 dragon slayer in the land, much to the dismay of Saix, the straight man comedic relief for most the volume 1, and also the number 2 dragon slayer. Leo is really bad ass, and cares about Ragna deeply, ready to decapitate anyone who makes fun of him. Ragna is not nearly as powerful or competent as Leo. But he is a hardworking, dedicated kid, who trains every night, as soon as Leo is asleep.

His gradual progress and episodic life by Leo’s side is broken by two events. First is his vision/dream. In it, he sees a man, old man, covered in rags, who shows him the future. Dragons will attack his city, and they will destroy everything, even kill Leo. That rattles him, but he doesn’t want to tell Leo. He hopes it is just a crazy dream. But it is anything but. After a few days, dragons really do attack. Right away, the city faces destruction and devastation of unseen before proportions. The reason for the dragon’s attack is very silly, and it really took me out of the reading experience for a bit.

Ragna leaves Leo, and rushes into action, hoping to kill the dragon before Leo engages him. He is lost, fall inside a river and has another vision. Turns out the vision is really a visitation, for non-other but Ragna from the future. He has made a pact with an exile dragon king to travel back in time and change the future. The future Ragna is incredibly powerful. He has succeeded and destroyed all dragons. But at what cost? During the time he focused on training and dragon extermination, everyone he cared about has perished. He is a man powerful enough to protect everyone, but with no one he cares about left. Him and current Ragna fuse. This gives Ragna power he never thought possible. With this newfound power, he eliminates all of the dragons, even the superior one with ease.

This is a happy moment for most, it should have been a happy moment for Ragna as well. But he realizes something. There is a curse following him. Everyone he cares about is destined to be killed by dragons. So, in a very heartbreaking scene, he and Leo go separate ways. He wants to protect her and get rid of the dragons before they get their hands on her. To do this, he will need some help. So, he meets the current version of Crimson, the exile dragon god who has helped the future him. They, after some ups and downs in communication, as well as distrust, start working towards a world without dragons.

This is one of the most visually impressive manga I have read in a while. The drawing is so consistently good through the whole first volume. Every character has a very distinct and memorable design, making them stand out and easy to remember. Every single face is absolutely unique, you couldn’t mistake one character, even those on the very periphery for another. Both the interior and exteriors are drawn with the utmost details. The towns feel like actual places, like something out of an ancient travel log. The highlight are the dragons and the way they are designed. They fit the setting, given the fact that they are more of a traditional western medieval type. They are huge and so well drawn! Each dragon that appears looks like something out of Game of Thrones.

The fight scenes are very dynamic. There are multiple characters with powers that are very distinct. There is some gore, but not plenty, so if you are of a weaker stomach, no need to skip this action-packed adventure. Some have labeled this as a darker fantasy. I disagree. There is some violence, but its far away from the darkness of something of Berserk for example.

I like how thought out the dragons are as a species. There is a whole system or hierarchy to them. The lowest are basically beasts with tremendous destructive powers. Higher ones possess intelligence. There are also a special kind of superior dragons, who can take human form, and possess incredible powers. The only way to kill them is by using silver swords, or silver aura. They also can’t attack during daylight, making them the ultimate nocturnal predator. The highest creators on the dragon totem pole are God Dragons, creators of unbelievable power.

I’m wondering what the next challenge for Ragna will be. After this first volume, he fells absolutely overpowering. Hopefully this doesn’t turn into a One Punch Man kind of thing. Apart from that, very excited to read more.

Peccato!

Ma to jednak swoją dość wysoką cenę, którą będzie musiał on zapłacić.

Ragna Crimson m’a vraiment captivé !

Ragna is a boy who tries to fight the dragons that ravage his world---but he's really more a caretaker for the 12-year-old Leo, who is actually good at killing them. But that's before his future self intrudes on his present-day life, granting him the power he spent decades earning, in order that he'll be able to use it before everyone he cares for perishes . . .

As a story, this isn't going anyplace terribly new so far. The monsters infesting this series are dragons, or dragon derivatives, and the world is rather bleak as very few can stand against them. Ragna is dedicated to Leo and to training himself to keep up with her, but it isn't going very well.

Ragna's true powers are a bit of a mystery, even to himself. He was never interested in WHY it worked, just that it did. Crimson was clearly the brains in their partnership, and as soon as Ragna regains his memories, he abandons Leo and searches once more for his future partner.

It's definitely annoying HOW he abandoned Leo, but on the other hand (as several side characters point out), his relationship with Leo definitely went into creepy territory (she's twelve and he's still bathing her, and there's additionally a tiny panel where he's taking a picture of her posing naked with a sword). Crimson, as more of an adult, helps pull the story out from that rut.

And this may not be doing anything new so far, but Crimson is the best character by a lot. He's a schemer, a shapeshifter, and out to destroy his own kind, down to the last member.

The art is pretty detailed, especially around the dragons. I'm glad the physical version is fairly large, as it makes it easier to appreciate the finer points in the art.

This one is probably going to take a few volumes to decide if it goes anywhere new or not, but for myself, I enjoy regression stories, dragons, and future!Ragna. It would be fun if this eventually got animated. I rate this book Recommended.

It sounded like a good premise, but it hit two major strikes right off the bat: the gifted dragon-hunter the protagonist serves is a cutesy prepubescent girl (which makes NO sense, and chibi-stylistically clashes with the intended darker atmosphere of the story), and the crux of the story is the lazy storytelling device of 'Future Me came back and gave me all the power they built up through sweat & blood so I can be instapowerful.' Frankly, future-self's story sounds like it would have been much more interesting. The rest of the volume after that suffers from the cheat/line-butting feel of "oh yeah, Future-Me told me all these secrets and said we're going to be allies so let's immediately do that" instead of building unlikely alliances from the ground up and revealing major secrets and surprises naturally.
Not my cup of tea.

Read more graphic novel reviews at The Graphic Library.

Ragna is a dragon hunter who follows around the world’s best dragon hunter: a twelve-year-old-girl named Leo. He takes care of her day-to-day needs while she hunts the most ferocious dragons, who can take on many shapes outside of the typical giant lizards. One night, Ragna begins to have dreams of Leo’s death and a shrouded figure who bemoans how he couldn’t save her. He warns Ragna that this reality is coming soon. When the fateful day finally arrives, Ragna rushes out to confront the powerful dragon, only to be brushed aside into the town’s river. As he sinks to the bottom, the shrouded man comes to him again and explains that he is Ragna’s future self, and the only way to save Leo is to give him all the power he has been learning for twenty years. He also tells Ragna that the only way to keep Leo really safe is to team up with Crimson, the dragon monarch, to eradicate all the dragons from the world.

Time travel narratives always present interesting problems, and this one is no exception. Crimson of the future warns Ragna of the Future of the consequences, so I appreciated that there isn’t just this time-bridge and hand-over of power with no backlash. Ragna’s switch to seeking Crimson/ditching Leo was really sudden; I didn’t enjoy how he abandoned Leo suddenly, especially after the build-up in the first half of the volume where he repeatedly states what he is willing to do to save Leo. I’m also not quite sure why Crimson wants to destroy all the dragons, but that will probably be revealed in future volumes. I also wonder how much more Ragna can grow as a hero, since he has been basically maxed leveled at the beginning of the journey. Having an over-powered hero is only fun in One-Punch Man.

Square-Enix rates this as Older Teen, most likely for the violence. The scene in Ragna’s dream where Leo dies is pretty gruesome. Otherwise, there is nothing else in volume one that would not be suitable for younger teens.

'Ragna Crimson' Vol. 1 by Daiki Kobayashi is a promising start to a fantasy series. We follow Ragna, an average warrior, who accompanies Leonica, an expert dragon hunter. In this world, dragons are a huge problem, razing towns and killing scores of people. Ragna and Leo have been traveling around, saving towns but Ragna is troubled by a mysterious figure that shows up in his dreams and promises that Leo's fate will not be a happy one.
A lot happens in this first volume. We get solid character introductions for Ragna, Leo, and Crimson and a fascinating plot. I am interested to see if it sticks to being relatively straightforward or if there are more twists and turns to come. Great action and interesting characters. I'm intrigued to see where this goes next.

This started off pretty nice and interesting, but then the MC (Ragna) got WAY overpowered without any of the effort that his future me took and the battles just got a bit boring, I mean, it is just no fun if all he has to do is touch a dragon and it is all "I don't feel so good". Plus, while I could understand it somehow, I also found it strange that he would part way with that person like that, instead of just taking them along or training them to get stronger, no you leave them, no clue if they live or not (and was that not the whole reason you got stronger?). I did like the dragons and the lore in the manga. Plus, the action scenes, while later on a bit boring, were still drawn in a cool way.

It's a story about a mediocre dragon hunter who in the future will hold great power .. things get interesting wen his future self goes to the past & passes to his present self all his great knowledge & power to stop many terrible things from happening..
One very important thing is that Ragna the dragon hunter must befriend Crimson a powerful shapeshifting dragon they 2 together will save the future but they dragon & dragon hunter enemies by nature ..
Awesome premise with a decent execution so far

Drama, dour, angst, time travel, and both a protagonist and antagonist I found annoying, the only things missing on my checklist of disinterest would be institutional corruption, conspiracies, and romance.

It's a dark fantasy where humans are prey and an angsty zero-to-hero resolves to kill all dragons and teams up with a scheming companion.

I did find this to be a little hard to follow at first. It was a bit all over the place at first and the story telling wasn't the smoothest. However, the story was rather intriguing and I was interested in seeing where it goes. I will continue the series as I do want to know what happens in the story.

I really wanted to enjoy this manga and thus discover a new series to consume. Unfortunately, I did not jive with this story and with the storytelling. I struggled to engage with the characters and found myself a bit disconcerted with one of the relationships and its strange dynamics. I will nto continue on with this series.

This book was a different type of book. I usually don’t read books with dragons in the, because it’s harder for me to connect with them. But overall a great storyline. A bit of comedy but also some serious. I would recommend to a dragon lover! 3/5 stars.

So I saw this at the library yesterday and I thought “Eh, why not?” So I picked it up.
I started reading it yesterday and oh my god it was amazing.
