Прочетох една много, много сладка книга.
И макар да имам предвид "сладка" като начин на писане и като история, тя е такава и в другия смисъл. Защото един от нейните герои е известен със сладкото име Дядо Шоколад. /Макар да си има и истинско име, разбира се./ А на страниците й са описани какви ли не вкусни неща - торти, бонбони, кактусов мед, кексове, ментови сладкиши... хайде да спра. Накратко, това е книга, в която всичко с върти около сладкишите. Тя започва заради сладкишите и свършва с тях, а в центъра на всичко е Сладкият панаир.
Обаче ако си мислите, че това ще е просто една весела и безгрижна история, в която всички ядат сладкиши и се забавляват до безкрай, нека ви кажа отсега - лъжете се.
Защото тази история си има всичко - и весело начало, и непредвидени препятствия, и приключения. Има си дори и злодейки - цели три на брой, които искат да унищожат всички сладкиши. Да, да, правилно прочетохте. Искат свят без сладкиши. Това представяте ли си го? Аз не.
Е, нашите герои - малките Мартин и Матилда и техният дядо Оскар, или известен която Дядо Шоколад, също не си го представят. И започва една щура история за надпревара със злодейките. Кой ще е по-бърз? Те или дядо Шоколад и децата? Ще бъде ли открит отвлеченият камион с бонбони? Ще бъдат ли заловени трите злодейки? Кой ще спечели голямата награда на Сладкия панаир? Ще разберете, ако прочетете "Дядо Шоколад". Този път прекрасната Нарине Абгарян пише в съавторство с Валентин Постников и резултатът е повече от прекласен - една история, която ще ви накара да се смеете, да се ядосвате на трите злодейки, да притаявате дъх при поредната пречка пред нашите герои.... и непрекъснато да си представяте описаните вкусни неща. Последната задача е улеснена от прелестните илюстрации на Марина Пузиренко, които са чудесно допълнение към историята.
Свежа, забавна и трудна за оставяне - такава беше за мен "Дядо Шоколад".Тандемът Абгарян-Постников е свършил чудесна работа. Историята много ми хареса и искрено се надявам на продължение.
Само едно предупреждение- докато четете, постоянно ще ви се хапва нещо сладичко. Така че не се бавете - запасете се добре и хващайте книгата.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this one. It could be a matter of unmet expectations. I'm used to being so moved by Narine Abgaryan's books, that this one fell flat for me. I also didn't quite enjoy the book ending nowhere (clearly unfinished, yet not on an actual cliffhanger).
Having said that, the illustrations are beautiful, the main character is charming, and if you're into sweets, this book is a treat.
To be honest, I'm not sure if I'll be buying the next book in the series.

Tare mult mi-a plăcut cartea, am citit-o cu o poftă de blândețe, de magia cuvintelor, de dulce, de aventură, de narațiune captivantă. Bunicul Oscar este irezistibil, cu pofta lui nesățioasă pentru dulce

„Bunicul de ciocolată” (traducerea în română) este o carte delicioasă, cu gust de aventură, inocență și presărată cu o imaginație savuroasă. Narine nu m-a captivat prea mult cu proza ei pentru adulți (deși mi-a plăcut realismul ei magic), însă pe teritoriul poveștilor pentru cei mici mi-a surâs creația ei. Am sărit pasajele foarte dulci (eu nu prea am voie cu zahăr și mi se făcea o poftă maximă, hehe). Bunicul Oscar e un tip tare ciudat, cu dieta lui „zaharisită” și cu tabieturile sale neobișnuite.
Pentru că nu există aici pe Goodreads trecută și ediția în română, voi da mai jos copy paste descrierii oficiale a cărții:
„Viata lui Martin si a surorii lui, Matilda, se transforma intr-o aventura plina de haz din clipa cand vine in vizita Oscar, un batranel cat se poate de neobisnuit, caruia ii plac atat mult dulciurile, incat copiii l-au poreclit "bunicul de ciocolata". “Bunicul de ciocolată” de Narine Abgarian și Valentin Postnikov
“Bunicul de ciocolată” este primul volum din seria cu același nume scris de scriitoarea de bestseller, Narine Abgarian și de Valentin Postnikov. Ne vom bucura de ilustrațiile Marinei Puzirenko, iar traducerea din rusă în limba română a fost realizată de Elena Drăgușin-Richard.
Stilul celor doi scriitori este ușor de digerat și chiar amuzant, reușind în același timp să fie educativ și să ne țină în suspans. Lumea creată de ei ne amintește de “Charlie și fabrica de ciocolată” de Roald Dahl, seria “Mary Poppins” de P. L. Travers și seria “Dădaca Matilda” de Christianna Brand.
Titlul seriei, cât și porecla personajului principal nu numai că reflectă faptul că-i plac dulciurile și că are un parfum de ciocolată, dar poate să fie și o metaforă, care descrie bunătatea lui față de familie și cei din jur. De-a lungul romanului realizăm că este excentric, iubitor, uneori copilăros, isteț, protector, grijuliu, plin de viață, harnic, muncitor, înțelegător și serios atunci când trebuie să fie. Putem să-l considerăm un pacifist pentru că încearcă adesea să rezolve conflictele diplomatic decât să apeleze la violență. Caracterul lui ne amintește de Willy Wonka, Mary Poppins, Dădaca Matilda, cât și de Cotoriul cu pălărioiul din cartea cu același nume a Doctorului Seuss. Toate aceste personaje sunt excentrice, au puteri magice ieșite din comun și-i învață pe copii lecții de viață importante.
Surorile Paulsen reprezintă opusul bunicului de ciocolată întrucât ele sunt fățarnice și acre cu cei din jur. Sunt viclene ca o vulpe, răzbunătoare și nepăsătoare față de pagubele pe care le crează și suferința adusă oamenilor. Le putem asocia cu Domnișoara Havisham din „Marile Speranțe” de Charles Dickens pentru că la fel ca ea, cele trei surori au avut un trecut tragic, refuză să-l accepte și să meargă mai departe în viață, au sindromul mesianic, poartă pică unor oameni din viața lor și încearcă să distrugă viața celorlalți. Faptul că detestă dulciurile și preferă sarea, piperul, ghimbirul, mâncărurile picante și condimentate exagerat reflectă caracterul lor antipatic, suspicios și nemilos.
Vom învăța că aparențele înșală, nimic nu este ceea ce pare și totodată vom învăța despre familie, prietenie, curaj, istețime, înțelepciune, respectul reciproc, importanța de a asculta și de a fi un bun observator.
Întâlnirea dintre bunicul de ciocolată și surorile Paulsen în diferite locuri din oraș poate fi un semn că ne putem aștepta la o posibilă confruntare între ei în viitorul apropiat. Scriitorii preferă să ne facă să ne punem multe întrebări în legătură cu arborele genealogic al Matildei și al lui Martin, cât și despre secretul cufărului misterios primit ca moștenire de familie.
Mister, suspans, legături de familie, umor și aventură sunt cuvintele care descriu acest roman. Recomand această carte cititorilor de la 8+ întrucât sunt unele subiecte pe care cititorii mai mici nu le pot înțelege.

We will enjoy Marina Puzirenko’s illustrations accompanying the text and it was translated from Russian into the Romanian language by Elena Drăgușin-Richard.
The two authors’ writing style is easy to digest and even humorous, managing to be educational and to keep us in suspense at the same time. The world that they created reminds us of „Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl, the „Mary Poppins” book series by P. L. Travers and the „Nurse Matilda” book series by Christianna Brand.
The book series’ title and the main character’s nickname not only reflect that he has a sweet tooth and has a chocolate scent, but it can also be a metaphor that describes his kindness towards his family and others. Throughout the novel, we realize that he’s eccentric, loving, childish sometimes, clever, protective, caring, bubbly, diligent, hard-working, understanding and serious when he has to be. We can consider him a pacifist since he often tries to solve things diplomaticaly instead of restoring to violence. His character reminds us of Willy Wonka, Mary Poppins, Nurse Matilda and also the Cat in the Hat from the books with the same name by Dr. Seuss. What all these characters have in common is that they’re eccentric, have magical powers and they teach children important life lessons.
The Paulsen Sisters are the opposite of the Chocolate Granddad because they are self-righteous and sour towards others. They’re sly as a fox, vengeful and careless towards the damages they cause and the suffering they inflict upon people. We can associate them with Miss Havisham from Charles Dickens’ „Great Expectations” because like her, the trio had a tragic past, they refuse to accept it and move on, they have the messianic complex, they bear grudges against some people in their lives and they try to destroy the lives of others. The fact that they hate sweets and prefer salt, pepper, ginger, spicy and heavily spiced foods instead, reflects their unpleasant, suspicious and ruthless character.
We will learn that appearances can be deceiving, that nothing is what it seems and we will also learn about family, friendship, bravery, cleverness, wisdom, mutual respect, the importance of listening and being observant.
The meetings between Chocolate Granddad and the Paulsen Sisters in different places in the city can be a sign of a possible confrontation between them in the near future. Both writers prefer to make us ask questions about Matilda and Martin’s family tree and the secret of the mysterious chest passed down as a family heirloom.
Mystery, suspense, family ties, humor and adventure are the words to describe this novel. I recommend this book to readers 8+ since there are topics that younger readers can’t understand.

This was a disappointment in many ways. I've read Three Apples Fell from the Sky and I really enjoyed it. I understand that this is a book for children and that the story is light, fluffy and intended to spark joy, but it did not spark any joy for me. First, the so-called grandfather is a very one-note character, he simply eats a lot of candy, that's it. While relying on a gimmick is not necessarily bad, this is usually a technique employed for side characters supposed to bring out the comic in a situation, not for the main character who needs to have a little bit more personality. Second, the humour is very poorly done, I did not find any of the situations described in the book as funny, more like terrifying. For example, having to deal with a grandpa that is prone to collapsing if he doesn't get sufficient sugar in his blood is not a situation that would create joy for children, it is simply anxiety-inducing. Then reading about the grandpa making the entire house sticky or sticking to the school principal is not funny, it is weird, grose, and inappropriate. Third, the story lacks any sort of meaningful plot. Abgaryan attempted to introduce some villains (we don't care about them), a sort of stake (we don't care about the stupid contest and apparently no one does), and a sort of tension (easily resolved, nothing of importance). The impression I was left with is that the real story, the one which is worth reading, is the one that comes after this book ended. It's a hard pass from me.

Нарине Абгарян отново доказва, че умее да разказва истории, които галят душата, но този път е писателката се е посветила на децата. Резултатът е едно небивало приключение за доброта, чудатост и способността да откриваме щастие дори и в най-обикновените неща.
