A Great Fit: My Take on Confidence, Charisma, and the Career that Suits You Best

Rate this book
Life, leadership, and career advice from Tom Murry: “Everything I do needs to be like a Calvin Klein suit.”

• “It has to be iconic, legendary, and let its brand speak for itself.

• It has to be impeccably precise and carefully considered.

• It has to be tasteful, timeless, and elegant, with nothing unnecessary getting in the way.

• And most important, it has to make people feel great.”

Tom Murry headed Calvin Klein as CEO for seventeen years during a time of massive growth and success for the company. In his first book, Murry describes his decades of experience as a leader in the world of fashion along with personal advice on how he made it to the top of the profession he was destined to have—and how we can do the same in our careers.

Murry gives us glimpses of well-known fashion personalities, institutions, and events, and in an easy-going, humble narrative, takes us from his childhood in Houston to the most influential runways of the world, including his travels around the globe and a stint on an oil rig as a young man. Equally important are Murry’s takeaways on what qualities he believes it takes to become a good leader and how we can use them to achieve success in any workplace. This is not a how-to, but rather a thoughtful and straightforward look at the talents and grace that allowed Murry to thrive in his chosen career. Everyone, no matter their career or stage in life—or their knowledge of or interest in the fashion world—will find this book a fun, informative, and inspirational gift from an author who wants everyone to enjoy the same success in their career that he has.

Empty platitudes (e.g., do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life) illustrated with stories of the author's success, delivered without any awareness of the fact that most of his opportunities were purchased for him by his wealthy family.

Mr. Murray's stepfather -- a Texas oil tycoon -- gave him his first serious job, paid his way through college, and funded his luxury lifestyle while in college. His grandmother gave him a Jaguar while he was in college. His first job upon graduating from college was middle management at Head, which is discussed immediately before the "It's not what you know; it's who you know" chapter.

The entire book is tinted with the stain of unrecognized privilege obtained through nepotism and family wealth. He talks about how when a boss yelled at him he immediately resigned because he didn't like being yelled at, and you shouldn't have to tolerate anything less than a job you love. (No mention of how a person should make their way through life if they don't have a family fortune to sustain them while unemployed after abandoning a job they didn't love.)

The Perfectly Useless Book of Useless Information. It doesn't get any more useless than this!
It was agony reading the first bunch of chapters, its evident he's a self entitled guy.
The mere fact only his name is on the cover as the author shows he thinks of just himself. No wonder mainstream publishing houses wanted nothing to do with him.

Tom, please, please do not write another book. A writer you are NOT. Your advice is pedestrian, and mostly 'copy and paste' dribble.

I'm sorry, but this is one of the most shoddily written books I've ever read in my life. Couldn't read it. Got 25% of the way through and donated it.

Whether you're an aspiring entrepreneur, team leader or a seasoned business CEO, this book is a waste of time. There is NO valuable information or advice that will help you advance. Just another crappy business book from a wannabe writer. The tone, and flow of the book was horrendous.

Tom Murry's A Great Fit explores the continual journey of self-improvement and personal development, an endeavor aptly encapsulated in Edgar Albert Guest's quote, "I have to live with myself, and so, I want to be fit for myself…". Murry's narrative is a blend of introspection and practical guidance, rooted in the lessons he garnered from influential figures in his life, notably his grandmother, Nana. The book artfully navigates the realms of cultivating personal traits such as taste and charisma, emphasizing the impact these qualities can have in a professional context. Murry draws on captivating stories and examples, including inspirations from iconic figures like Calvin Klein, to illustrate how these attributes can be developed and leveraged in one's career.

Central to Murry's discourse is the importance of self-awareness, confidence, and a well-defined sense of purpose. He invites readers to introspect their motivations and passions, advocating for career paths that resonate with one's core values and interests. His narrative, enriched by his entrepreneurial journeys starting from a young age, underscores the significance of deriving joy and satisfaction from one's pursuits. Murry draws extensively from his experiences, ranging from his formative years to his tenure in the corporate world, distilling essential lessons for attaining success and fulfillment professionally. Particularly notable is his examination of the interplay between happiness and success, challenging the conventional wisdom that equates financial wealth with fulfillment. He thoughtfully explores the roles of gratitude, purposeful work, and meaningful relationships in nurturing genuine happiness. Murry's writing style is accessible and engaging, presenting complex ideas with clarity and ease. The fluidity with which he weaves together different facets of his life and career insights is commendable, offering readers a cohesive and immersive reading experience. His authenticity and earnestness foster a connection with the reader, making his experiences and perspectives relatable and impactful.

A Great Fit excels in its pragmatic approach to career growth, touching upon diverse elements such as cultivating success-driving traits, uncovering one's driving forces, and finding joy in professional endeavors. Murry insightfully balances the discussion between inherent qualities and acquired skills in pursuing success, acknowledging the roles of personal background, environment, and individual choices. This book is a valuable resource for anyone aiming to harmonize career success with personal fulfillment.

The book had maintained its smooth writing and good foundation from the beginning until the end. It is reflective as to the core and values needed to live a successful and accomplished life whether it is in the business world or in dealing with relationships with other people.

Undeniably, Murry’s experiences had made him who he is right now and the wisdom he carried; from the works in the Oil Rigs to Head, Tahari, and of course for being a CEO in Calvin Klein for 17 solid years.

Murry pointed out, that it is our basic characteristic that will make make a difference, in other words, it is our own mindset. It’s not the external forces or stimuli, it is always how we react to things. A great fit, on the other hand, is finding what suits you best. It answers the question, “What is it that I like to do in my life that would make me feel excited to jumped out of bed every morning?” By finding our great fit, perfecting it, opportunities and money will follow afterward.

Though it is most likely not going to happen, as when choosing a degree in College and in deciding a career path, we need to do many assessments and be practical enough - what if what you love to be doing wasn’t really a profitable field, won’t help you to network, or develop leadership? The idea is good so is the reasoning, but most people weren’t born with a silver spoon in their mouths to be given many choices in life.

Moreover, I am recommending it. The writings are good, it’s honest work. In addition, it’s the author’s primary experiences and his take, it will definitely broaden our understanding of many things especially in business and human relations.

For Tom, a right fit isn’t enough. It has to be a great fit - which means doing what you love that would make you feel excited to go to work, to see your coworkers, your boss, and what’s new in the workplace that needed your talent or expertise which makes you feel valued.

Choosing a career is perhaps one of the difficult choices we all have to make in our lives. And take note, working takes so many years of our precious lives. Most of us ended up getting depressed because we don’t like what we were doing, mainly because it’s not our calling. That’s what this book is all about - finding the great fit.

It also tackles taking responsibility, dealing with difficult people in the workplace, and how staying calm despite the turmoil can save your inner peace. One must not only focus on their careers but should balance things well and learn to laugh at life. Happiness is a choice.

The author did not fail to include wise words from notable businessmen, journalists, politicians, and philosophers in every chapter. I must admit it added more weight to support his claims from his experiences.

The writing is good. Impressively done and simple. For aspiring businessmen or entrepreneurs, and to those who are about to make their career choice or what course to take in College - read this one, I’m sure you will learn a lot from this.

An interesting work of wisdom-sharing and shedding some lights on the most obvious things we do in our lives that we all seemed to underestimate. To name a few: following our passion, knowing more about ourselves and what we stood for, developing strategies to resolve problems in the workplace, and giving back to the people who had helped us throughout the way.

A Great Fit by Tom Murry reasoned that in deciding a career or a life-long job, one must consider his talents, his inborn skills, or what are the things that a person would love to do without ever getting tired of doing it - this is what Murry called “A great fit.” In doing so, we will just find ourselves happy and productive.

The author did not fail to capture every element that is needed for someone to reach his/her goals and instead even provided strategies to deal with an unfortunate situation - as expected from someone who had a background in Psychology and extensive experiences in the business industry.

For the most part, I love the part where the author emphasizes that your relationship with your friends, your family, and your spouse must not be taken for granted in following your career. Money can be found again but a trust broken will never be the same!

I like how it is delivered, well-written, and a must-read self-help book!

There’s nothing in the book which would prompt you to look for another. To be successful in your career and to build a healthy relationship with other people whether it is your family, friends, and your coworkers at work is almost impossible to have at the same time. Thankfully, we have Tom Murry to write a book on his extensive experiences from fashion industries, sales, marketing, and branding and his being a CEO for a solid 17 years in Calvin Klein!

A Great Fit is a recently published phenomenal self-help book that offers new perspectives on your success as you go on choosing what type of career that suits you best. And with his equation that made him a successful businessman, a negotiator, and a leader in Calvin Klein, Confidence + Creative Freedom + Vision = Taste.

He also stresses that we must not only accept what is available, or less in value, instead we must strive for excellence - whether it is something personal or in your career path. Just like how Calvin Klein speaks for its brand.

Well-written, with such wise words and brief biography of the author. Murry presented his life before taking a position as a CEO in Calvin Klein. There’s so much to learn from this author! For people who are just starting their careers and that someday would make a big name, this one for you.

To live a healthy and productive life, a fruitful career, and being happy at the same time is in reality, very rare. In this book, Murry pointed out why. It’s seven words. ‘We are not living our great fit.’ A great fit, as I understand it, is your passion, it’s a talent or an innate ability that ever since you were just a kid - you like doing it because it’s where you are comfortable in doing, and it draws smile in your face.

Murry knows he is good at dealing with people, negotiating, and doing business. He has an innate taste for higher quality in life, a standard for living, he likes fashion, fine clothes and selling them to people effortlessly. It’s his great fit. Over time, as he followed his great fit, he emerges as a very successful man.

The book also points out that your relationship should not just be taken lightly as you go follow your passion and building your career, after all, we wouldn’t be successful if not for them. It’s a matter of giving back and be grateful.

Quality-wise, smooth writing, and frank. It does not sugarcoat things as to make them almost impossible, it simply reasoned why we should look and follow our great fit in life. Highly recommended and more power to the author for sharing his invaluable wisdom through writing this book.

A kind of book that most of us would be needing in our lives for it offers various advice on the key points towards living a happy life and having a productive career growing. It can be done by finding our great fit in life - which is our calling and our heart’s desire that would help us grow and felt validated.

Tom Murray is a former CEO for 17 years in one of the world’s fashion and clothing leading brands, Calvin Klein. His wisdom, experiences, and strategies in getting the best deals and never ever settle for anything less are written in this book. It should always be the best. Throughout his life, whether it is doing business or maintaining relationships with people and team building - he always strives for excellence.

The road to success is by far, not an easy road to take. Winners don’t just accept handouts but rather they work hard and do their own part. After all, as he put it, money is simply a by-product of great choices, that is, knowing our great fit.

Murry delivered his arguments on solid grounds basing on his experiences and understanding of life and the business industry. A Great Fit is a great book to help ourselves to become better and to strive for excellence as well. Highly recommended book.

Reading this book, I came to realize how important it is when making decisions that would most likely determine our lives for like 20 solid years. Life in those years is a result of whether we are living our great fit. What is it? It’s an intense sort of calling or a passion that we would like to be doing in the workplace where our talents are fully utilized and contributed to the success of the company. When we are in our great fit, things become easy and money follows.

For the most part, one must also strive for excellence in his or her life. You will never grow if you keep on compromising your values for a short-term and mediocre offer. Never be afraid to ask. I like the wisdom of Alex, CEO of Head, about when life throws you an opportunity, it’s either you swim or sink. But Murry added a third great choice, it is to swim away. It’s about admitting that we are not yet ready for a job at hand and worst, we could mess up things. It takes great courage to swallow one’s ego.
It’s reasonable, beautifully written and very honest, and a bit frank.

Murry captures his readers as he undoubtedly wrote a masterpiece that would likely change people’s lives especially the young ones. Highly recommended.

A perfect self-help book for you to read this summer. It covers a wide range of topics regarding success and self-improvement, leadership, negotiating to get the best deal, and finding our ‘great fit.’ Murry believed that an individual can only flourish and bring out the very best in themselves if that individual aligns their talents in deciding what career path to take. However, it’s more than just enjoying what you do, it’s about being able to grow, contributing to the company’s success, and the feeling of worthiness.

Personally, talking about reality is really hard to apply. It sounds good but it’s not my cup of tea as the author itself was born from a wealthy family. If you have money, you’ll have more options than everyone. I believed that we all have passions and have a thing or two where we are better than everybody, but people who only have enough to get by must first choose a profession or a career path that would feed a hungry stomach before throwing themselves into the cliff.

So many lessons and different ideas are necessary to broaden our view on things we are sometimes unaware of or not given enough importance. I like to argue in order to grow. Love it! Top rated.

The determinants of our career and the type of work that would take much time in our lives is very evident in deciding what course to take in College. Only by aligning our innermost desire, we can attain our great fit- which in turn will make us more productive - this is the main argument in this book by Tom Murry.

In order to compete in a highly competitive industry, we must be our best. We must believe in ourselves. We must have a taste, a standard, and a series of experiences to make us grow and land in a job that we do wholeheartedly.

It emphasizes key points in becoming your own leader, and to get up every time we stumble in our lives, and quickly moved on from what had failed us. Your relationship, your attitude, and how you treat people are also as important in your ability to lead.

This is a perfect book for youths who are dreaming to make a difference in their own field of interest, business industries, and other areas in our lives where we find our calling. It’s simplistically written, it’s like talking to your father and receiving sermons at the same time. It’s not lengthy, it’s honest, and it’s a must-read book.

A Great Fit (My take on Confidence, Charisma, and a Career that suits you best) is an excellent package in advancing ourselves by helping us to see the underlying issues that are critical to our success in both our careers and healthy relationship with the people around us.

It’s only when we truly know ourselves that opportunities would be coming right in our doorsteps. Somehow an old concept, but the author made an excellent way of connecting it to the vital phases in life such as aligning careers to what we enjoyed doing and would make us feel validated and have a purpose.

It’s a good one, but I think, as the author has said, it’s better said than done. Take my career choice, for example, I like arts, painting, and writing but I took up a different path in College because taking Fine Arts is expensive and wasn’t a profitable job for me. No offense intended. My life would have been different had I followed my passion. But I think it’s just a matter of doing your best to whatever life throws you.

I like the concept, the author’s perspectives, the writings, and all. So, it’s a highly recommended one for me.

Perhaps this is the most useful book to help us climb up the ladder of success ever written. The author did an excellent job in introducing ‘A Great Fit’ when thinking long-term and working our way out to have satisfaction and happiness in our career path. In fact, it is written based on solid grounds as experienced first-hand by Tom Murry, a former CEO of one of the world’s leading fashion brands, Calvin Klein.

It also pointed out some critical issues that we need to do if we really want to become successful. It’s not all about making money but rather it also stresses other aspects of our lives as well such as the importance of maintaining a healthy relationship with the people around you, having a positive mental attitude, having a class and standards, and why we should always strive for excellence.

In addition, the author also offers some quick strategies in doing negotiations and getting the best deal, understanding your client’s needs, and how important is our attitude no matter what type of career we are in.

The message is very impactful, it’s straight-forward, friendly but frank. Moreover, it is a must-read book so grab your copies now!

Self-help books must be founded on solid grounds and experiences by the author as he will impart wisdom to other people. And frankly, he did it coupled with his brief biography, and few wise words of the notable leaders and great thinkers before his time.

For Murry, the most essential part of becoming successful is finding not only the right fit but a great fit. To put it simply, a right fit is doing a job you enjoy and that you’re good at. But this book goes beyond your liking or being competent at it. But rather it is the place where you belong, where your talents are fully expressed and needed, and where you can serve the greatest number of people and many others to find their great fits.

He also stresses some other seemingly obvious and formidable ingredients for success without compromising our standards and relationships - to either our family, friends, or spouse.

It offers a wide range of advice and tips to really help people become better and to achieve excellence as well. Murry is a perfect author who tells you things exactly as they are. Highly recommended.

The framework of Murry’s take on success, confidence, charisma, and a career that suits you best is a book that would definitely widen your perspectives by reflecting on the choices you have made in the past that put your life in someplace you are in right now. Questions needed to be asked: Am I happy with what I’m doing right now? Am I productive? Is my relationship with my family, friends, spouse, children, boss, and coworkers healthy? Am I growing?

I like how Murry introduces the ‘A great fit’ concept in determining success rates and by saving our mental and emotional health despite the higher demands of work. It’s all about knowing yourself to the core, establishing standards, and balancing work and relationships.

However, there are also some points in his idea where I cannot agree mainly because we all have different experiences and understanding of our respective areas of interests. Nevertheless, it does not lessen its purpose to inspire and imparts wisdom to its readers. Highly recommended self-help book!

A runway author who took on another level of helping people especially the youths just like his friend Vogue Editor-in-Chief, Ms. Anna Wintour, by writing his life-success story as a former CEO of the world’s renowned leading brand for fashion and clothing, Calvin Klein. A Great Fit covered almost all aspects of what it takes to become your own best self now.
By finding our ‘great fit,’ which are the things that we are comfortable doing, and would highly ensure our growth thereby making us an accomplished individual in our chosen field.

Though most were already an old concept, the author did not fail to introduce new ideas which you cannot find in other self-help books. Some of which are the Swim, Sink or Swim away, Open door policy, No means no concept, etc.

The book has indeed a good foundation from the experiences of the author, so it’s not just something to be taken lightly. It is delivered in a friendly style talking yet very frank and honest. Another must-read book. Grab your copies now!

Packed full of life tips, albeit most unhelpful, the author tries to portray what to do and how to act in order to live your best life. Even though he states over and over again that money does not buy happiness, he doesn't hesitate to detail repeatedly all of the luxuries afforded to him throughout his life beginning in childhood. From private jets to dining at 5 star restaurants, it is evident that he has never financially struggled in his life. When he advises to walk away from jobs that don't make you happy, he misses the mark that for a lot of people without an abundance of finances, that simply is not feasible. Overall it appears that much of his success in life, as well as his outlook on life, was afforded to him because of the abundance of finances he had which allowed for more focus on other aspects needed to be successful.

Thank you to Goodreads and Greenleaf for the giveaway win in exchange for an honest review.

A book that talks about how to get ahead of life by doing the things we should be doing all along. It also imparted much wisdom that is typically found in other financial and self-help books. Some of these seemed too obvious; while some provided no constructive explanation on how to do it specifically. Very subjective.

Nevertheless, it had served its purpose to its readers - that is to inspire us and to give us another perspective and insights into a fast-paced growing world. I like how honest the author was in writing this, every page has something to offer to the readers and it was based solely on the author’s experiences as he ventured his way up to the ladder of the corporate world.

Very interesting, I like the words of wisdom, his different takes on some scenarios in the business world; and in providing his strategies to get the job done and getting the deals. His life strives for excellence and balance. Great work. Definitely would recommend it.

Just finished reading this amazing book! Knowing Tom Murry, his love for fashion, and a life dedicated to improving Calvin Klein has been an exhilarating experience. I consider myself fortunate to know a little bit more about this amazing individual with heroic capabilities!

From the very beginning, Tom Murry found his niche in the fashion industry. He committed to being the best at it, became a man of the game, and continued to leverage and leverage until he was the last man standing. The fodder of entrepreneurial success stories frequently consists of taking risks and seizing an opportunity. But in this simplified example, the most prominent idea comes into focus; success comes to those who set out to achieve something and do nothing but work towards that goal.

You won’t be disappointed by this one.

This book should have been a bestseller. It started slow and maybe boring but it gets very engaging quickly. There are a lot of things to learn from this book, how to think differently, the brilliant way of making new things, chasing your dreams, and many other amazing themes.

As a manager, I was intrigued by this book. While I managed a small business, I know how difficult it can be to see past the crisis in front of me. I’m always looking for ways to learn from others’ mistakes. Murry's experiences, while vastly different from my own, gave me insight and wisdom. Not since first reading Donald Trump my freshman year in university, have I read such a life-changing, inspiring business book. There’s a lot of truth in A Great Fit but the biggest takeaways for me have to be balancing home and work life. A brilliant book and one I recommend to every single business manager and leader.

A story of success by the author and how to get yourself successful as well. It’s just a matter of finding our great fit and working on it with perfection. It offers critical key points on knowing ourselves more, having our own sets of standards, and always look for the best of the best.

Murry captures the mind of his readers by introducing his own way of what contributes to a happy life, a healthy relationship with other people whether it’s personal or at the workplace, and most importantly, finding or identifying our great fit - something we enjoyed doing with confidence, utilizing fully our skills and talents, making us feel valued by contributing to the overall success of the company.

I don't typically enjoy myself when reading a business book, but Tom Murry was so much fun that I read the whole thing in the space of an afternoon.

The whole tone of A Great Fit is what makes it so relatable and easy to read. You feel like you're sitting down with Tom for a coffee and some conversation. A Great Fit is like having a mentor in a book, one that is fully capable of speaking to you across many career paths and positions.

A Great Fit is the best career book that I've read in a long time and one that I'll be reading again! Tom has put so much wisdom, advice, and practical tips into A Great Fit that there's no way to absorb all that he offers in your first reading. You'll enjoy this career book even if you never browse the business section.

I think this is a great book for people not only looking to change careers but looking to enhance the careers they've got. It has been incredibly helpful to me to evaluate what I do and do not like about various jobs I've held and what kinds of research and tools I should use to find my way into career fulfillment.

Do not expect the book to give you the answer to the question of what you are suited for in a career. That is not the purpose of the book and you'll be disappointed in expecting it. This is a guide to help YOU figure out what YOU are suited for and want to do.

That being said, I was successful in figuring out what I want to do and I am currently taking steps to achieve that goal. So, I can't recommend this enough to those seriously hungry for a more fulfilling career.

A commendable work by Tom Murry. This is a type of book that we should all be carrying in our bags to serve as a companion wherever we go. It is written in plain language, a little sarcastic and frank. It does not exaggerate and adds nonsense that is completely out of topic.

A Great Fit, is by definition, according to Murry, goes beyond liking your job or being competent at it. When you find a great fit, you find a place where you belong, where your talents are fully expressed and needed, and where you can serve the greatest number of people and help many others find their great fits.

The author did capture my interest to read his book and indeed, I’m not disappointed. This book is a must-read and a highly recommended one.

To have a successful career in a field where we would love to work, get motivated and valued, contribute, and serve others is a dream of everyone. And to get closer to that dream, we must know what is our ‘great fit.’

Tom Murry introduces new tips or techniques of some sort to get ahead of life as his experiences had taught him and as a Psychology major graduate. Certainly, it works for him, as he was a former CEO of one of the leading fashion and clothing brand in the world, Calvin Klein, and had the opportunity to work alongside some big and notable personalities in the industry such as Calvin Klein himself, Barry Schwartz, Anna Wintour, Alex Schuster, Terry Lundgren, and many others.

A job well done and more power to the author for writing such a book. Highly recommended!

Tom Murry listed down some of the most realistic tips and advice on how to approach difficulties and challenges in the business world. His tips are sensible and honest. His advice is noteworthy and even principled. The way he selflessly shared his experiences in his book, A Great Fit: My Take on Confidence, Charisma, and the Career that Suits You Best, just showed his gratitude and appreciation to all of the people who made an impact in his life, especially, in his career.

He is an inspiration to those who aspire just like him. He is a model for everyone who thrives to be a leader. He is a prime mover in the business industry. One can learn a lot from his book.
