I've been a fan of the Hollows for years, but haven't' gotten into the Drafter yet. The story doesn't synch with me as well, although I do intend to give it further chance later. This short story by Kim Harrison was a good way to garner interest for the new series as she creatively melded old and familiar faces with new ones.
It's a joy to see Rachel again but since I wasn't in her head, something just felt different. Jenks was his fun self, and I felt a small touch of sadness when he did - poor, aged pixie that no one can do without, even if he's stretched beyond his natural lifespan. Seeing Al again, although very very briefly, was a delight too. It was told through the point of view of Peri, who is obviously in the middle of vipers she trusts. I didn't latch on to her much because there were so many misunderstandings at play - and that's a pet peeve of mine - but the power she possess is certainly different in an intriguing way.
It's short and easy to fly through, there are several tense moments that made me hold my breath, two beloved characters to revisit (Al doesn't count because the glimpse was way too short), and a new heroine to meet. It made me miss The Hollows, but it also made me curious about a new world woven by the talented Kim Harrison, which was the point of the short story in the first place.

What do I think about a short story connecting two worlds by the same author?
Gimmick? Exercise? A playful romp playing around with two of her (and our) beloved characters? One a SF universe with fantasy underpinnings and the other a Fantasy universe with SF underpinnings?

It's short and fun. :) I loved seeing Rachel in Peri's SF world. Jenks too. :) How odd! :)

I really didn't see how this could work bring these two extremely different world together, but it did. The story started out with confusion for the characters and me the reader then it slowly brought the lose ends together to make a very interesting story line. Peri, needs Rachel's help. I am so worried about her after reading The Drafter. I'm hoping that what Rachel did in the closet will help her in her next book. The tow world came together magically, I want more. I loved team Peri/Rachel
Rachel is out on the town with Trent when she appears in a different place. Summoned and pissed, she lashes out at the naive man in front of her. Peri, watches as her drunk partner Jack goes down unconscious. Rachel is dumped into a ley line dead world and Peri is launched into something she doesn't believe in, magic. Rachel brings in someone to help, Jenks. Together these three develop a plan, put it in action and learn some new things.

An interesting mashup of the Hollows and Peri Reed series. It's kind of like a fan fiction and I was surprised that it worked for me. Maybe it's because I miss Rachel and Jenks and I enjoy every opportunity out there to read more about them. Waylaid also showed a different side of Peri, so perhaps this book will help the Peri Reed Chronicles series.
If you've read The Hollows series and are missing Rachel and Jenks, you'll most likely enjoy this book. If you've read The Drafter, you may enjoy this book. I'm just wondering if people that have not yet read The Drafter may be a little confused in that world.

Rachel Morgan is back! She and Peri made an awesome team. Peri is serious, and it was fun to see her work with someone as quirky as Rachel. The blending of their two worlds worked out well. Rachel was summoned into Peri's alternate reality, and there wasn't enough magic for Rachel to get back to her own world. Each of them had to use their own talents to devise a way to help Rachel. I just wish this had been a novel. I would have loved to get a glimpse into Rachel’s mind while in Peri’s world. Although this was from Peri’s POV, it isn’t necessary to read The Drafter before this. Waylaid is a good intro to Peri’s world.

The Hollows series takes place in Cincinnati after the Turn where witches, vampires and other supernatural creatures live among the humans. series takes place in a futuristic Detroit in the year 2030. Harrison sets up a scenario where Jack and Peri accidentally pull Rachel Morgan into their world.
I was excited for the opportunity to spend more time with Rachel and Jenks and dove right into Waylaid. As I read Harrison's introduction, I could not help but wonder if she could really pull this off. Indeed she did! The storyline was clever and I consumed the tale in one sitting. Poor Peri did not know what to think, and kudos to Rachel for mostly handling it like a trooper, our little Rach is all grown up.
I enjoyed the similarities between Peri, her world and those of Rachel’s. Each has to draw on her own strength and talents to get Rachel back to her timeline. I would not mind seeing these two team up again in the future. I loved that Jenks appearance and we briefly see another character from the Hollows. What was with the cat? So curious, and Jack's taste in TV/movies rocked. We could totally watch Supernatural together :)
Entirely too short Waylaid was a clever, fun read and gave me a nice fix. Fans of the series will not want to miss this short.

I don't know where to begin. I obviously loved Waylaid. I loved how Kim Harrison took Rachel Morgan from The Hollows and somehow put her in the world of Peri Reed from The Drafter. These two ladies together were an awesome team!
It's been a while since I read about Rachel. I actually never read more than four books in the series but I want to get back to it soon. So I thought it was so awesome to finally read about her again. I actually missed her. And Jenks! Oh my god, I totally missed Jenks. My favorite pixie ever!
But anyway, I really liked the story and how these two worlds of the paranormal and the futuristic came together. It made for the perfect entertaining read. It was also pretty short so I went through it in no time at all. It only made me want more of both The Hollows and The Drafter world.

Waylaid proves that size doesn't matter as long as it's done correctly. Harrison managed to truly make her characters shine in this short-story.
I wouldn't be against more crossovers between The Hollows and The Drafter series, because Waylaid gave me the best of both worlds - namely Rachel, Jenks and Peri! It was a fun, short rump, and it was great seeing Rachel and Peri trying to figure each other out. For those who have not completely finished The Hollows series, there may be some small spoilers, but nothing major.
The way Rachel was deposited into Peri's world made me laugh, because Peri really doesn't believe in supernatural happenings, even if she herself can go back in time to change things. Jenks managed to bring his special brand of humor to the story, and I enjoyed his interactions with both Rachel and Peri.
If you need a little something-something to tide you over until you get your hands on Harrison's next full novel, Waylaid is just what the doctor prescribes.
Jack leaned in to Peri, his hand curving suggestively about her waist, and she breathed in the faint scent of ozone and aftershave like a balm. Under it was a faint hint of gun oil, and Peri was hard-pressed to decide which one intrigued her more as they stood outside her apartment door with their carry-ons, glad they had the next week off.
But then Rachel gasped, and Peri's attention jerked back to her. Rachel's eyes were open but unseeing, and a curious feeling of time displacement pulled through Peri.

If you haven't already read Sideswiped or The Drafter, then you might be just a bit on the confused side about who Peri, Jack, Bill, or Opti are. If you read this novella because you love Rachel Morgan and Jenks, then you'll be just fine. This is a story that takes place in Peri Reed's futuristic Detroit, and not Rachel's.
It is a mashup of a futuristic society meeting Rachel Morgan's paranormal world. After being inadvertently summoned to 2256 Detroit, Rachel finds herself stranded without any of her magical abilities. Readers will love her shock at this new world that is so much different from her own. Here, Rachel comes face to face with Peri Reed who has the ability to draft back in time, and change things but loses memories in the process. With the not so shocking appearance of Jenks on the scene, Rachel, Peri, and Jenks race against time to find a way to get Rachel back in her own dimension.
I do believe there is another surprising guest but I shall not say whom. I dare say that this short story is fan driven. It's a way for the author to say thanks for reading The Hollows series, and please try The Peri Reed Chronicles while you're at it. Waylaid is a short, but definitely entertaining story thanks to the meeting of two very different and strong willed women. Plus, there's Jenks. I have debated when this story actually takes place and have come to believe it is between Sideswiped and before The Drafter.
I am eager to read the next installment in Peri's series called The Operator which releases November 22, 2016.

The rush I get from reading this is difficult to describe unless you've spent the last many years invested in the lives of Rachel and Jenks. Getting to spend more time with them is impossible to resist. Peri, even though I just met her, is a character that requires investment early on in her series. Seeing a glimpse of how things were headed to a downward spiral even before The Drafter was a great add-on.
I was extremely concerned about how this crossover was going to play out, skeptical at the thought of two such different worlds meeting. I shouldn't have been. As always, Kim Harrison has spun a tale that kept me captivated from the first page. The joining of these two worlds ends up adding up perfectly. Conflict and Rachel shenanigans aside, of course.
Seeing how Peri's gift can be similar to Rachel's magic, reading about little similarities that link their two worlds really draws the stories together, shows that even across the sub-genres, they're similar at heart. Brave characters, clever plots, addictive words. Of course, it wasn't nearly long enough. Tink’s panties! I need more! I'm left anxiously awaiting Sideswiped, and more than a little melancholy that there is no more of The Hollows to await. ~ George, 5 stars

it was so good to revisit the world of the hollows even if it was transplanted into 2025 Detroit.
a fun novella not going to shatter any records as best story ever, but a pleasant mash-up of two kick @ss women and their supporting cast.
Harrison admitted this was self fan fiction and it reads like it but maybe because it was fan fiction by the creator it was leaps and bounds better than your average fan-fic.

This just made me miss Jenks and Al and Trent and Rachel and ALL OF THEM so much. Fun little crossover story. :)

I finally figured out with this book what it is about Peri that bothers me. She doesn't grow. Even after three books about her she has almost no history because each and every book erases and nullifies everything you just invested several hours in.
This novella with Rachel only solidified how much having those funny past moments to refer to make a character. I have no idea who Peri is, and worst of all I just can't make myself care because she doesn't work as a first person character driven series. It's why the opening story where she was seen through others eyes worked so well.
Waylaid is yet another book where Peri doesn't remember anything at the end. My last review was that I would no longer buy the series, but would nab it from the library. Because this one had Rachel and was "priced to sell" I got roped in. Not again. This piece wasn't bad, but I'm not investing any more time in this character. Some harsh criticism for Harrison: Move on. Take some time to figure out where you want to go. Peri Reed is not going to keep your fan base buying your books.

WAYLAID was short and sweet, but satisfying.
It was pretty neat seeing Rachel and Peri together. They both have great personalities and together they were pretty fun, add Jenks to the mix and it's a party. I liked how Harrison managed to blend the characters into Peri's world. Rachel was definitely not in her own time and place, but she handled it like I expected her to and it all was pretty smooth.
I really miss Rachel and I am not a huge fan of going backwards in story timelines, but Peri's part was still enjoyable and I liked seeing Rachel again after the ending of her series. I hope that Rachel and Jenks visit somehow plays a part in a later Peri novel.

Was led to expect a novella where Rachel Morgan and Peri Reed team up for an adventure. What I got was a very short bite of drama designed to entice Rachel fans into reading Harrison's struggling "Peri Reed Chronicles". Not bad, but I feel duped.

Aaah! Best thing I've read in forever! Loved watching these two ladies kick ass together, it was so much fun! But kind of surreal... and too short. Why, Kim? *sigh* I miss Rachel and the gang so much....

Wow. That was disappointing. I was happily reading along and thoroughly enjoy the story. Even thinking I was going to give it 5 stars. When totally out of nowhere it just ended. Like super abruptly. I’m so confused.
It’s like checking a book out of the library and after chapter 4 someone ripped all the pages out.
It just stopped in the middle of a very intense and action packed part of the story.
I’m pissed. I was really enjoying the story. How bizarre?!?!

WAYLAID is a fun romp of a mashup between one of my all time favorite series, The Hollows, and the author's new series, Peri Reed. When I heard about this novelette, I had wondered how Kim Harrison would realistically mash the two very very different worlds without it stretching the rules to far. I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly everything played out. Rachel true to her character comes blazing in and her rashness gets her into trouble like normal. Peri on the other hand, is much more controlled and by the books type, and yet in this story a bit of Rachel rubbed off on her. It made for a fun but short tale.
One thing to note is that I think the draw for WAYLAID is more of a hook rather than a true story in it's own right. It feels like more of a marketing tool (and a good one!) for Hollows fans to be enticed by another story with Rachel, and introduce them to Peri's world. As a die hard Hollows fan, I think it's worth the $0.99 price tag, but for someone else who hasn't read the books, it may not be. Then again the reverse could be true and bring Peri fans over to the Hollows. Either way, it's a fun story that I enjoyed a great deal, that only made me love both series even more. Perhaps a re-read of the hollows is in order during the long wait until the next Peri book...

Then again the reverse could be true and bring Peri fans over to the Hollows. Either way, it's a fun story that I enjoyed a great deal, that only made me love both series even more. Perhaps a re-read of the hollows is in order during the long wait until the next Peri book...

My English review
Kim Harrison offers us a very original novel. Indeed, she decided to gather in Waylaid two of her series which are surprisingly very different. I liked the few Peri Reed novels, but I loved the Rachel Morgan series, so how to resist it?
Of course, the mix of universes is a little tricky but it was quite funny to see the meeting of Rachel and Peri, or even to find Al and Jenks. On the other hand, it’s true that I did not necessarily connect as much as I thought. It’s a good addition for fans, but I’m not sure it’s a novella that I will recommend particularly.

It was nice to see Jenks again, and Rachel improves considerably when she stands next to Peri.
I don't understand how the situation with Peri can possibly improve the series. It seems that Harrison has backed herself into a corner with the world set-up. It makes absolutely nobody in the world likable.
We'll see how it does in future installments.

A word of advice: Unless you're interested in BOTH Peri Reed and Rachel, you should probably skip this novella.
In all honesty, I would probably have rounded down, had it not been for the fact that I'm such a big fan of The Hollows. Needless to say, this one didn't work out for me, but I appreciate the effort.

Une Novella qui fait très fan-fiction mais qui est vraiment très sympa !
Les mondes de Rachel Morgan et de Peri Reed se rencontrent.
Peri passe un soirée bien tranquille quand son compagnon, bourré et fan d'une série télévisée sur la magie, tente une invocation pour rigoler. Mais contre toute attente elle réussi grâce à un vin maudit et a un artefact secret que Peri venait de récupérer. Et voila notre Rachel qui débarque dans ce monde de technologie, ou le tournant n'a jamais eu lieu et ou la magie au lieu de grandir comme dans le sien c'est petit à petit éteinte.
Peri et Rachel vont donc devoir faire équipe pour ramener cette dernière dans son monde car l'artefact a déjà été livré au supérieurs de Peri alors qu'ils n'ont que jusqu'au soir pour réussir leur coup !
Haha, ça fait vraiment bizarre de voir Rachel comme personnage secondaire ! De la voir vue par un oeil extérieur, qui ne crois pas en la magie !
Tout l’intérêt est vraiment le clash entre les deux monde et l'action pour réussir à ramener Rachel chez elle. Je ne peux pas trop en dire plus de peur de spoiler car le texte est court et je vous en dévoile déjà suffisamment dans le résumé.
C'était vraiment une lecture fun, super marrante mine de rien de voir nos deux héroïnes se rencontrer et discuter justement des différences entre les mondes. Elles forment vraiment une équipe du tonnerre mine de rien à elles deux.
L'avantage aussi c'est que malgré le fait que je n'en suis qu'au tome 5 de Rachel Morgan je n'ai pas eu de spoil, les renseignements sont suffisamment généraux pour que l'histoire se passe à n'importe quel moment de la série !
Une lecture très sympa !

I read this this without having read any of the Peri Reed books, so it was a little confusing at times, especially since it's entirely Peri's POV and set in Peri's world. It was great seeing Rachel again though, as well as cameos/mentions of other Hollows characters. This crossover story was a fun experiment, and it did its job, in a way. I read it purely for the Hollows characters, but it made me curious enough about Peri that I'm going to put The Drafter on my tbr for when I'm in a more sci-fi kind of mood.

This is a free read on overdrive, though you can also get it as a Kindle single. I'm a fan of Kim Harrison's The Hollows series so I thought I'd give this a try. It's a crossover between that and the Peri Reed Chronicles. After reading this I definitely need to read the Peri Reed Chronicles, it could be interesting. In the story, Rachel Morgan ends up being summoned to Peri Reed's world, in Peri's apartment, completely by accident. Neither woman knows what's going on, and Peri eventually figures out that Rachel needs help getting back to where she's from. However, there is no magic in Peri's world that Rachel can use to make the trip, so the two have to work together to figure out how to get Rachel home. Even without reading any of Peri's stories I enjoyed the story and didn't have much of an issue following what was going on with the characters from the Chronical's world. If you're a fan of either series I recommend reading this.

A blend of Harrison's urban fantasy The Hollows (13.5) and the science fictional The Peri Reed Chronicles (0.25) with Rachel and Jenks unexpectedly collaborating with Peri.
My Take
Harrison did a nice job of blending magic with high tech and created a reasonable scenario for Peri to encounter Rachel, although I would have liked to feel a touch more of Peri's disbelief in this encounter.
The scene in the mall in which Rachel is communing with Al and Peri steps into the "conversation" was funny while Rachel's ability to see the draft was a useful "fly in the ointment". I hope that keeps Jack and Bill wondering for a long time.
I don't understand why Rachel has to take the tech back with her? And where did Rachel's accusation about Bill's plans come from? I didn't pick up on anything that would have tipped her off. What did I miss? I'd be curious to know as well where that comment about stealing or patenting tech came from.

It was a drunken Jack’s interest in vampires and magic as he plays with a device capable of carrying a city’s data stream and pulls Rachel into their time — and their Detroit.
To get Rachel and Jenks home, Peri must decide what will chart her future: her blind trust in those who grant her power or what her intuition tells her to believe.

Peri Reed is a drafter and works with Jack Twill for Opti. Carnac is their cat; he looks a lot like Jenks' Rex as well. Bill is their boss. Hank is a security guard at Opti Health.
Event Horizon hired Opti to steal back their accelerator.
Rachel Morgan is a witch. Jenks is Rachel's pixy partner. Trent Kalamack gets a mention. Al is the demon.
Anchors remember what happened if a drafter shifts time.

The cover is a meld of Peri's and Rachel's heads, back to back, although neither of them looks like Rachel with her curly hair.

I really enjoyed this story. Seeing Rachel again, and with Peri!, was pretty fun. :-) It was a little confusing, though, as I had understood that this was a "read anytime" novella. I think in actuality it's more of a bonus-for-after Rachel story, and a prequel Peri story. Because wasn't in The Drafter? In this book, he and Peri are still pretty tight.
But reading that Rachel was pulled into Peri's reality from a date with Trent? Well, I really need to get caught up in her series! I haven't yet read the last books in The Hollows. I really need to get on that. STAT! (Maybe in June?)
I wasn't too clear on how Rachel ended up with Peri. Sure, it was something to do with the solstice, but. . .was that it? The fact that Jack did his "fake" summoning on the solstice was enough to pull Rachel from her timeline to Peri's? And is The Hollows series set in the future? I thought it was set sort of now-ish. The Peri Reed Chronicles are definitely set in the future.
So that was sort of confusing. But once I got out of my way and stopped worrying about the how and just focused on the fact that Rachel and Peri were together. . .Well, I enjoyed it a lot more. :-)

In her Foreword, Harrison says, "Waylaid still reads like self-made fan fiction to me, " thereby denying book bloggers and other amateur reviewers the opportunity to use that label. Which is a shame, because that'd be a great way to sum it up. Thankfully, it saves us all from making the same joke.
In a move as classic as Uncle Jesse visiting Los Angeles to say "howdy" to Enos*, Harrison brings much beloved Rachel Morgan into the new, awesome, and in much need of publicity world of Peri Reed. Set sometime after the main events of The Witch with No Name (but not necessarily the last chapter), and before The Drafter, Waylaid will serve as a great introduction for fans of Morgan's series.
A drunken mishap, inspired by a silly Urban Fantasy TV show (that I'd totally watch), results in Jack summoning Rachel in to Peri's apartment. Jack and Peri assume she's a counter-agent who'd been waiting for them to return to attack. Rachel has no clue who they are other than nitwits who summoned her away from a date and started attacking her. It doesn't take her long to realize that her magic doesn't work, and wherever she is, it's a world she doesn't recognize -- Detroit still exists, people have technology she can only dream about, and the ley lines are deader than Arizona back home. The clock's ticking and Peri and Rachel have to team up to get Rachel back home.
It's silly, it's fun -- it's pretty faithful to both series, it hopefully helps boost sales of The Drafter and its sequel.
I don't really a lot to say without getting pretty heavy into spoilers, but I thought it was worth the pittance I spent on it, probably a little more. Fans of Harrison should give it a shot.
* I just revealed my age there, I know. I also know there are older examples, but that's the first in my memory.

When I heard these two awesome heroines were going to share the same reality for a short time I got super excited.
I love Rachel from The Hollows and Peri Reed from The Drafter and I was ready for a perfect blend of both worlds.
So how does it work?
Well, I don't want to spoil the fun but let's just say itchy witch Rachel is in trouble and Peri agrees to help her despite this leading to big trouble for Peri if she is found out.
I do love the way Kim Harrison was able to connect these two very powerful women. They live in completely different worlds. Rachel in a world full of magic with elves, witches, demons and vampires and Peri in a world where you could go back in time to fix a mistake.
One of the things I liked the most about this short story was that these two women despite being very different and from different worlds were able to get along quite well and even trust each other. They seemed to recognize each others souls.
On a plus note and in one word : Jenks!!
