Three strangers meet in a cafe for the first time. To share their stories of heartbreak. Aranya is a rich, feisty, attractive and successful young woman who is about to get married but her fiancée is in two minds. Amrit is an obese, grumpy, gifted coder who is struggling hard to get over his unrequited college love. Javed is a happy-go-lucky model and actor besotted with someone – who has no clue about his existence. Drawn by the need to confide about their pain, they continue to meet. Each time trusting the other with a little more. Until bit by bit, smokescreens are lifted, revealing stunning secrets and baring the unparalleled intensity of love. Hello, my dear readers. I hope that all of you are safe and healthy, wherever you are. I know the circumstances are not easy and can get scary at times, but nevertheless, we must stay indoors and take care of ourselves. That’s the only way to rid the world of this virus.
Since we are stuck at home, why not get back to reading or, for us bookworms, even more reading!
Well, that’s what I have been doing. I was sent this book, The L-Word: Decoding Love by Chitrangada Mukherjee, for review purposes. Now, you guys know how much I enjoy the authors’ work, and not without good reason. This time too, she puts forth a brilliant story through this novella.
Let me begin the review with a short summary.
Summary
Aranya, Javed, and Zacko are three strangers meeting for the first time in person after having met online a few months ago. They begin to share their stories but not everyone is forthcoming. Each of them has some baggage, some issues to deal with, and need each other for support. But can online friends be friends in real life? Will they be able to decode love?
What I Liked
I loved the story. It is a nice, romantic read. It began as a regular tale of strangers meeting and them trying to come off as not-so-damaged. But as the book progresses, the story takes shape and then – there’s no stopping. There is a twist at the end, which is what makes this read interesting.
The characters are wonderfully drawn. The three friends are the main characters and each of them has some emotional issues. All very contemporary and relatable. The story isn’t complicated, but it focuses on the emotional well-being of people. People like you and me.
The writing style of the author is what got me hooked onto her books from the beginning. In this one too, she has maintained her standards.
What I Did Not Like

💗The L Word: Decoding Love💗 Aranya is a rich, feisty, attractive and successful young woman who is about to get married but her fiancée is in two minds. Drawn by the need to confide about their pain, they continue to meet. Each time trusting the other with a little more. . This is a very short novella which feautures three protagonists, basically I won't really call them protagonists, instead they are the path of the story. The book is definitely different than what the author usually writes, this time it's more fun and a lot hidden secrets are brought out by all the characters and how love has played a role in their life is depicted so well. The book is full of twists and turns, it's definitely a light, easy and enjoyable read with fun and relatable characters. The climax was unpredictable though, here everything has a story tell and the concept/theme is well chosen. Zacko is my favourite for some reason. Yes, definitely give it a try you will enjoy.
The L-Word: Decoding Love book by author Chitrangada Mukherjee is unique story weaved around strangers and ending as sweet love story.
Blurb more or less sums up the book, as it reads out plot revolves around three strangers Aranya, Ibhan and Javed but mainly around Aranya. One can say book is decoding love / love interests of above three characters. Each person has his own story to narrate/tell, facing their challenges boldly, characters are present generation millennials, their lifestyle penned are relatable, read the book to know more about them, how the three grow close to each other, their challenges/secrets etc. Language is casual and lucid. One might need to have a little patience for initial few pages for it may make little sense but as pages turned you get totally engrossed in the plot. Plot is not predictable while reading I personally felt Ibhan was a shady character but was proved wrong, was disappointed that one of them lost life, plot ends in a nice way unraveling/solving all smokescreens/secrets and leaving readers satisfied.
Worth the read so would recommend to all fiction lovers.
Thanks to @rushme_reviews for the opportunity to review this book.
The L-Word: Decoding Love book by Chitrangada Mukherjee is a story about three stranger drawn by pain of lost love . They meet in a café and shares their hearts out. . . Aranya, Zacko, and Javed are three strangers, who met on Instagram and finally decided to meet in person. Hesitantly but assuring they share their stories. The idea of sharing personal stories with strangers is amusing because what if you become friends after narrating worse part of your lives. But on the other side the question comes in our mind whether online friends are reliable or not? . . This novella comes with lot of twists and turns as the characters true-self unfolds more in the tale. Initial chapters can take a toll on your patience but that's needed to build the premise of this story. The climax is surely unpredictable and I bet, you won't see it coming. . . Writing and narration style is nothing sort of amazing. I was hooked, may be because I read major chunk of this book at midnight only. If you're looking for a contemporary romance fiction with some modern twist and turns. You must get this E-book.
What word comes to your mind first when you hear 'L-Word'? Love, lust, life, live??? . . The story starts with Aranya meeting two strangers, Javed and Zacko in a cafe. They had met online and were meeting for the first time. Friendship blossomed eventually. They started sharing what they couldn't share with anyone else. Each of them is battling their own demons. Three totally different individuals: Aranya, a rich girl in a high paying bank job; Javed, a model and an actor; Zacko, an obese and grumpy coder feel at ease confiding in eachother. . What does fate have in store with them? Will new friendships help getting new perspectives? Will Aranya be able to get over her past and move on? . . Firstly the author has beautifully presented all the three characters : their flaws, their traits and eventually how their stories unfold. Narration is simple, lucid but crisp. As the story unfolds, as a reader I was excited to know more, to see what happens next. It is a story of friendship and love & the story of accepting your true self. . Overall, I would say it is a light but a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it! Light but exciting, this one is a perfect quarantine read! .
Love is a four letter word, but the emotions that the word evokes is something that words can decipher. Some love stories are unusual and different. They take time to grow on us. This is one such story.
Starts unusually with 3 strangers who start sharing their stories, but not honestly. They have their dark sides, they are insecure and scared of showing their weakness to people.
Ananya is beautiful, rich and in love and confused. Inspite of being unsure she continues meeting Zacko and Javed and trusting them a little more.
Javed is a wannabe actor who masks his emotions and pain and puts a good facade. Not ready to come out his closet and share his side he ends up meeting them and becoming a part of trio. He shares only his career, stories and struggles.
Zacko is underconfident who is unable to fill the big imprints his elder brother has created thus a failure in his parents eyes. He is obese which drives him to the wall further. Labelling himself as a failure he himself loses way and the zeal to do well even if he's a talented coder.
What happens when these 3 meet? Will they be able to help each other overcome their weaknesses, confusions and insecurities? Will the strangers become more than strangers to friends? Read the book to find out.
The book starts unusually and the characters take time to get acquainted. A unusual story of love, complexities of relations and friendship. I like the way the author handled the concept. A very matured story that grows as it progresses.
“Isn’t it strange how a hashtag can bring—” “Strangers together.”
The L-Word: Decoding Love
What starts off as a meetup among three people who met online, eventually leads to an intriguing story showcasing the complexities of love and friendship. The story revolves around three main characters- Aranya, Javed and Zacko, each having a story to tell. Sharing bits from their own love lives, the three develop a bond as they try to 'decode love'. An unexpected twist, a heart wrenching death and a wonderfully woven tale of friendship, fickleness and love, this book will keep you hooked on from the very beginning.
The character development is commendable and we are able to get an insight into the minds of every character, regardless of the extent of their roles. I haven't read any of the author's books previously and I'm glad I got a chance to review this; I have got to say that the writing style of the author is excellent.
Somehow, this book will leave you satisfied at the end, it just will.
First of all, the cover of the book is so mesmerizing. It will keep your eyes on it only.
In this story, there are strangers who meet and fall in love with each other. The love stories are from each one's perspective. The three people about whom the author has talked about in the story are Aranya, Ibhan and Javed.
All these three people had met in a cafe and shared their stories with each other. From then only, they start meeting again and again. They start to share all the secrets of their life with each other. Now, they share an amazing bond.
The author has showed the bond between these people in just an amazing way. I just loved it. The characterization was really amazing. You may fall in love with each of the characters. The plot created by the author was really interesting. Just go for this amazing book. It's a light and one time read.
