Merglan has the source of true magic within reach. Evils not seen in Kartania for hundreds of years wreak havoc on the forces of Westland. The last of the dragonriders must fight for Kartania’s freedom or be extinguished. After Anders learns of Merglan and his dragon’s violent takeover of the elf capital, he is faced with the burden of leading the allied forces to their last stand. The only problem is, he doesn’t know where his allies are, or if they’re even still alive. The elf army is divided and in ruin, the dwarfs have been driven from their city under the mountain, and the humans are scattered across their kingdoms, all struggling to stay alive. Merglan could attack Anders, his dragon, and their small army at any moment. With Anders attempting to juggle his role in the prophecy, the prospect of becoming king, and the future of the allied nations, he struggles to stay one step ahead of Merglan. Knowing the allied armies are scattered and he is outmatched in his skills as dragonrider, Anders and the leaders of the Westland Revolutionary Army form a plan. Knowing the fate of Kartania will be decided with his life, Anders will need help during this last stand. Can he find his allies and bring them together? Or will he and the forces of Westland be overwhelmed by Merglan and his evil army? Will the rise of the dragonriders be enough to fulfill the prophecy? I received an ARC and this is my voluntary and unbiased opinion. I have enjoyed all the previous books in the series, and this one did not disappoint. It was action filled, multifaceted and complex, and completes the saga with a very satisfying ending, with some sadness that one should expect... people do die in war :( It also made it clear that the world continues, and who knows maybe there will be more stories set here?
I gave these four books a 3 star because I was very disappointed in the ending. Anders was suppose to be King, not the very little known Hannah. Very, very, disappointed. Had I known how the story would end, I would not have wasted my time buying or reading any of it.
Fun series, easy to read. Characters are well established, the protagonist is not always the main character. It’s not a lopsided telling, there’s plenty of strife and growth in the characters and story.
Was a good conclusion to the trilogy. The series felt like an easier, digestible verson of the Eragon series. If anyone is looking for a young adult dragon rider series, I'd definitely recommend this one.
Please get a better editor or some Beta-readers. In no world is it acceptable to have published works with sentences like “Anders prepared to use the magic Taren(sp?) had been preparing.” or “The pointed knobs on his pointed ears told him he was an elf.”
It’s a fun and entertaining series to read. I was able to connect to all the characters involved straight through to the end. It is also a fitting end, into my expectation and yet better thought out then I expected too. Well done writing this series.
An excellent ending to a wonderful series! Lots of action and more dragons. A J is a wonderful writer and I will definitely be checking out the rest of her catalog.
Just finished the fourth book, so many great characters - I am still sad at the those who didn’t survive. The plot twists were quite unique and surprising - thought I needed a secure saddle! Will have to read more of Walker’s books for sure.
I have been reading a lot of dragon books lately. I like these. They don't insult my intelligence and they're fun. The story is the basic good versus evil, but I love the author's "answer" at the end.
Having read the complete series I highly recommend this series for Dragon Minded readers! Very well crafted story everything covered and nothing lost between books. It's a "Stand Alone" story that you will not want to stop till the end!
This book was really fun to read. It hit up from the beginning, hit was like a rollercoaster with fast paced twists and turns. The ending of Mergland was very climatic.
The battle was epic the new order was seen coming as well as all the nations are getting along. Sad that did not get a King but the Queen will work just as good.
Similar to the first three books, on the verge of 4 and 5. Similar to the third book, rounding down. ~85. The reason is pretty much the same as with the third book. There are some things I wish were touched more - such as the 'true source of magic'. I expected it to be much more prominent, such as the 'name of names' in Eragon, but it wasn't touched that much apart from the mentions that it's somewhere below the elven city and there was no real mention about the scope of the power or how it could be used. In general, the book (and the series) were a nice journey of fast-paced dragon fantasy, even with some of the mentioned flaws.
