A collection of two books. One a bunch of short stories and the other a graphic novel called "Night Bus". They all fit together, but I feel like just reading Night Bus would have been a better experience.
The artwork is a bit sketch-book quality, but the book reads fast so it's not an issue and I did like seeing the endless pages of Chinese country landscapes.
This is a pretty cool item just because we don't see all that many comics coming out of China.
Night Bus and the other stories are typically told in a dream-like, day-dreamy fashion. The images move between reality, fantasy and dream. The titular story concerns the artist's grandmother who has Alzheimer's.

It was kinda confusing - it seemed like there was supposed to have a lot of deep meanings but it was kinda scattered and I could barely follow the stories let alone figure out what the metaphor was! But it was still pretty and fun to read!

Non avevo ancora letto nessuna graphic novels di fumettisti cinesi, ma conZuo Ma avevo già avuto un piccolo incontro con il numero di Dicembre 2020 dell'Internazionale.
Night Bus pubblicato nel 2018 in Italia per Bao Publishing racconta una storia insolita, peculiare, dalle tinte fantasy e grottesche: una giovane donna cerca di tornare a casa, ma una volta salita su un bus notturno si perde in un viaggio che la trasporta in mondi magici abitati da pesci parlanti, bambini gatto e case-elefanti. Un viaggio lungo e confusionario che lascia il lettore sgomento e perplesso fino al capitolo finale dove l'ultimo tassello del puzzle viene posizionato, rivelando il vero messaggio nascosto.
Lo stile di Zuo Ma, già intravisto nell'inserto dell'Internazionale intitolato "I coleotteri e la bambina", è contraddistinto da un ingente chiaroscuro, tratto realistico, ambienti e luoghi immersi nella natura contrapposti a personaggi dal character design fiabesco e che strizza un po' l'occhio allo Studio Ghibli (L'elefante-casa mi ha ricordato troppo "Il castello errante di Howl"!).
Alcune tavole le ho trovate un poco confusionarie, soprattutto a causa dell'uso di chiaroscuro e retini che vanno un po' ad "appesantire" la scena in cui si muovono i personaggi.
Durante la discussione del #bookclub si è molto discusso sul significato del fumetto, simbolismo e interpretazioni. Molto interessante ciò che ha fatto notare @laspulcialibri: alcuni personaggi e la storia in sé ricordano "Alice nel paese delle meraviglie"!
Una lettura inconsueta, ma allo stesso tempo molto dolce. Sono curiosa ora di recuperare anche Lungo i bordisempre di Zuo Ma edito Canicola e scoprire altri fumettisti cinesi come ad esempio Golo Zhao.

Cerita petualangan yang dimulai dari perjalanan naik bus sebenarnya banyak. Tiga elemen yang biasanya ditawarkan setelahnya : nuansa selama perjalanan di dalam bus, cerita di titik-titik perhentian, hingga momen di tempat tujuan sebagai pengakhir cerita. Namun di buku ini, Zuo Ma berfokus pada dua pertama.
Tentang perjalanan seorang gadis muda di suatu malam, saat mencari armada alternatif pengganti kereta untuk pulang ke rumah setelah kecopetan. Sebuah pengalaman naik bus pertama kali, membawanya menjelajah hutan, desa tak dikenal, berisikan orang-orang dengan cerita yang menggabungkan antara alam nyata dan mimpi.
Kekuatan utama dari novel grafis ini adalah paduan visualnya yang mampu menampilkan sisi emosional dalam narasi-narasi singkat. Meskipun di sisi lain memberi kesan sulit dan membingungkan mengikuti alurnya yang melompat-lompat dan tidak linier sebagaimana cerita biasanya.
Dalam gambaran visual yang lebih memberikan porsi pada lanskap di luar karakter, Zuo Ma —komikus Tiongkok mempertemukan pembaca dengan UFO, gajah raksasa, ikan yang duduk di kursi sambil menonton tv, bekicot dan samberlilin yang bertarung lalu membesar di angkasa, gua misterius, dan tokoh-tokoh manusia yang berpenampilan aneh.
Penggambaran nuansa mistisnya mengingatkan pada Junji Ito. Namun cerita Ma di sini sepertinya berusaha mengungkapkan lebih dalam tentang perjalanan pikiran manusia menghinggapi berbagai fase waktu dan kondisi. Bagaimana si tokoh utama memulai petualangan dengan bus yang ia sendiri pun tidak tahu di bawa ke mana seolah menempuh perjalanan waktu, singgah di beberapa tempat, coba mengurai sambil memahami berbagai keanehan di alam yang tak dikenal, bertemu banyak situasi menakjubkan, dan mengakhirinya dengan perenungan atas kematian sang nenek.

A beautiful, haunting collection of very individualist graphic narratives that operate on a slipstream between reality, dream, metaphor, and fantasy. The loss of open spaces and old ways of life, a fascination for insects, and the slipperiness of identity all recur through this fascinating volume. The book opens and closes with two versions of the same story, the variations just enough to make the repetition work, and a key to how Ma's stories work - not through plot but the surreal accretion of details and allusions onto simple events.
The art feels self-taught, equally ungainly and deft in an interesting way. Not quite an outsider artist, but one mercifully free of the broader currents and cliches of graphic storytelling.
Highly recommend.

Dopo un inizio complesso, si capisce il bandolo della matassa: ma poco importa. Qui bisogna farsi coinvolgere e catturare dalla bellezza e dalla ricchezza delle tavole. Ogni pagina è un piccolo gioiello in cui perdersi, un insieme di dettagli a volte apparentemente casuali, ma solo apparentemente. In un altro testo dell’autore ero rimasta affascinata dalla bellezza dell’uso del colore e quando ho aperto questo, sono rimasta un po’ spiazzata, perché quello andavo cercando: ma superata la diffidenza…wow.
Credo che questo sarà uno dei fumetti chr, a prima vista amato e considerato poco, riprenderò in mano spesso, per cercare quello che sono assolutamente convinta di aver perso per strada.

Un viaggio strano, a volte un po' inquietante, che confonde fino alle ultime pagine. Ma alla fine tutti i nodi tornano al pettine e viene fuori che quello che poche pagine prima sembrava così distante e sconosciuto è quella grande cosa che accomuna tutti noi.

I read this for my library challenge of reading a graphic novel. I really enjoyed the illustrations but the content wasn't what I thought it would be. Maybe this is my segway into reading graphic novels though??

Eu acho q as avaliacoes ruins devem ser da primeira edicao. O autor parece mudar muito os livros entre as edicoes, e nesse a ligacao entre a realidade e a viagem da avó é bem aparente e super fluida.
As metaforas sao lindas... e mesmo quando elas sao obscuras (algumas imagens eu nao consegui criar sentido): eu nem ligo pra entender tudo que leio ou vejo

Lindo, realmente de encher os olhos a arte de Ônibus Noturno. Zuo Ma trabalha temas como luto, saudade, memórias da infância em uma mistura de realidade e sonho na China rural. É como se eu entrasse no lugar mais profundo de sua mente e pudesse vasculhar o que lá contém. Gostei demais dessa leitura!

Sebuah cerita perjalanan yang absurd. Pergi dengan bus malam dan pulang dengan bus malam yang sama. Sepanjang perjalanan ditemani oleh hal-hal absurd mulai dari cerita ikan, serangga, hingga ufo. Tapi semuanya berujung pada perjalanan dengan bus malam. Sebuah perjalanan absurd yang cukup menyenangkan.

Una ragazza non riesce a prendere il solito mezzo di trasporto e si perde. L'unico modo di tornare pare essere il misterioso autobus notturno. Ma il suo non è un viaggio normale, non sta percorrendo la solita strada, tutto si fa confuso e strano eppure c'e sempre qualcosa di famigliare.
Night Bus è stata una lettura che, appena terminata, mi ha lasciato con un enorme interrogativo: "ho capito bene?"
La storia narrata è un viaggio semplice ma inaspettato ed imprevedibile, di quelli che quando pensi di averne capito il senso, cambia senza preavviso ne spiegazioni, mettendo ogni tue certezza in dubbio.
È un viaggio mistico tra realtà e finzione, dove ogni tavola racchiude più di un segreto e se letto con superficialità, lascerà quel senso di confusione al lettore.
Un viaggio dolce, romantico, onirico, ma che racchiude un retrogusto amaro sul finale, lasciando quella nota di dolce tristezza al lettore.
Non penso sia una lettura adatta a tutti e forse a tratti pure io ho perso alcuni dei dettagli della storia in quanto, una volta giunto alla fine, mi sono dovuto fermare a riflettere su quello che avevo letto e sul senso di quello che avevo appena visto per trovare una spiegazione a quello che avevo tra le mani.
Penso che in Night Bus sia narrata una storia dolce di ricordi e situazioni comuni, che accompagna il lettore al suo finale amaro senza mai metterlo di fronte chiaramente a quello che si andrà a leggere nelle ultime pagine.
Ricordi e situazioni talvolta poco chiari e molto mistici e fantasiosi, tra creature mitologiche e protagonisti dalla forma felina, di cui fino alle ultime pagine stentano a capirne il senso.
Ma un senso l'avevano e quando sono riuscito a ricostruire il puzzle dietro questo autobus notturno, mi si è aperto un mondo di infinita tenerezza e dolcezza.
Purtroppo ripeto, forse la lettura poco immediata e gli stacchi talvolta eccessivi porta Night Bus ad essere un graphic novel non adatto a tutti i lettori.
Tuttavia non vorrei scoraggiarvi ed anzi, vorrei spingervi a leggerlo per sapere se anche voi avete interpretato il finale come me.
E soprattutto per lasciarvi catturare anche voi dalle immagini piene di dettagli e fantasia che riempiono le pagine di questa particolare lettura!

La tematica è profonda, l'idea è buona, la resa... secondo me non tanto. A metà lettura ero così spaesata da stare per abbandonare, dicendomi che forse non era il genere di lettura per me, perché troppo surreale. Sono contenta di essere arrivata alla fine, perché all'improvviso tutto ha avuto più senso, però - senza spoilerare - mi sa che la fine arriva un po' troppo tardi, nel senso che prima mi ha lasciato davvero troppo allo sbando, non capivo se ero io a mancare della giusta sensibilità per capire la trama, o se magari mi mancasse qualche nozione sulla simbologia legata alla cultura cinese. Più che incuriosirmi su come sarebbe andata a finire, la lettura man mano mi lasciava smarrita.
I disegni non sono fra i miei preferiti ma sono innegabilmente ricchi di dettagli e cura.
Suggerimento: se subito dopo avere letto la fine tornate indietro e rileggete le prime due tavole di sicuro vi si stringerà il cuore.

Moody, surreal, and fairly plotless, Zuo Ma is a respected member of the Chinese indie comics scene, and I can appreciate the drive of that movement to reject the commercialism which continues to produce pulp-minded tropes and plots. More, I can appreciate, too, that there is a value in autobiography, in personal reverie, in confessionalism that is offered through a graphic novel medium. After all, why can't one simply offer detailed and personalized pen and ink art which honors key memories of their lives and why can't we slow to appreciate them?
All this is very very personal, of course, and it clashes absolutely with the moment we produce a massive compendium as we have here, offered to the larger publishing world for its paying consumption. Other reviews make this clear: too personal, the art quality is not strong enough, a lack of storytelling, too many disconnected stream-of-consciousness dream sequences, etc.
Those reviewers are not wrong. If you want Night Bus to match what graphic novels have come to represent, it will absolutely fail. And for Zuo Ma, who offers his own doubts about the value of his work throughout, recognizing that a lone artist writing into the hungry spaces of capital is a grisly task requiring some negotiation and compromise.
Still, while I fall largely with the harsher critics of this work, I have no need to pile on here. Night Bus has some beautiful moments of simpler times, of nostalgia and childish dreams, of a refusal to surrender to those hungry modern machines, and though I personally found too little pleasure in the ambling length of this work, I can't help but wonder at its value and necessity, of a single boy, dreaming and drawing.
All this is very very personal, of course, and it clashes absolutely with the moment we produce a massive compendium as we have here, offered to the larger publishing world for its paying consumption. Non avevo mai letto una graphic novel e ne sono rimasta piacevolmente sorpresa, anche se devo ammettere che è uno di quei racconti che necessitano di una rilettura, infatti l'ho letto due volte e dopo la seconda l'ho apprezzato ancora di più cogliendone sfumature e particolari. Il racconto coinvolge, stravolge, colpisce e commuove...è stato un vortice di emozioni rese ancora più forti dai disegni in bianco e nero. I tratti più o meno spesso conferiscono agitazione o serenità a seconda dei diversi punti. Leggendo questa graphic novel mi è venuto in mente un cartone che avevo visto da bambina, La città incantata di Studio Ghibli (se non ne avete mai sentito parlare andate subito a recuperarlo) per la personificazione degli animali, gli elementi fantastici e le creature che la protagonista incontra nel corso del suo viaggio con il Night Bus. Un elemento che mi è piaciuto molto è la confusione in crescendo che si crea leggendo il racconto, che svanisce e viene resa più chiara solo alla fine, con un colpo di scena finale abbastanza inatteso. Lo consiglio a chiunque abbia voglia di fare un viaggio fantastico tra le pagine e i disegni di questa graphic novel esplorando le emozioni e le sensazioni insieme alla protagonista, sembra davvero di spostarsi con lei.

illustrations in here are SO great 😍 but the stories however……….i am just….very lost……
⭐️⭐️/5. probably best not to have high expectations on how this one goes but would still recommend if you are looking towards appreciating art more than storyline. i was rlly looking forward to it tho since magic realism is something that i wanted to explore more of but it just makes me turn into a more confused potato........🤷♀️🥔
wonder if the translation plays a part bc i do feel that some of the dialogues are a bit off and halfway through i literally just HUHHH??? there are a total of 11 stories but i gotta be honest that i dont understand each and every one of it LOL. ok maybe its just me & my poor brain.........🧠
rlly appreciate the short explanation about how these stories came about towards the end of the book even tho it doesnt really helps me to understand the stories fully still. but at least i could understand the inspiration behind them which is mostly from the author's life and anxieties. 🥹

Night bus is the most interesting take on an autobiographical comic I have ever read. Zuo Ma is not really sticking to a linear structure but, instead opting to approach this with a" show don't tell" kind of a approach. Bouncing from different perspectives. Ranging from dreamy, to nightmare fuel, to oddly nostalgic and all of it feels very personal. I give this Graphic novel a 6/10, because even though this book becomes more enjoyable as you read on, I had a hard time really fallowing what was going on. Allot of the transitions between story beats were kind of messy and disjointed in my opinion. I overall enjoyed reading this and recommend you pick it up if you're in the mood for something unique

Per tutto il libro mi sono chiesta: ma che cazzo sto leggendo? poi sono arrivata all'ultima pagina,
e ho pianto.
Capisco cosa ha voluto fare Zuo Ma, non credo ci sia riuscito appieno, però mi ha smosso qualcosa. Mi sono però chiesta se questo dipenda dall'autore o solo dal mio vissuto; una risposta non la ho.
Un paio di pagine con disegni notevoli, anche se non è particolarmente il mio stile preferito.

I bought this book because flipping through it in the bookstore, the illustrations were surreal and otherworldly, and I thought I would get a nice magical realism story. Unfortunately, the book is on the whole incoherent, and there really is no story or plot. What little plot there is (I guess a dream sequence about the author's dying grandma? But I could be wrong here) is difficult to follow because the artwork, while beautiful in some parts, is so poorly drawn in others, that it is often difficult to distinguish objects or tell what is happening.

what just happened!!!
i can’t tell if i liked this or not.. gave it four stars since it wasn’t painful to read or anything but i didn’t understand all of it and the illustrations didn’t exactly help (a lot of the panels had not enough contrast so sometimes you literally can’t tell whats going on) but on the other hand it started with an interesting topic (development, rural -> urban transition) and the stories at the end were really solid and tied everything together. it almost felt like the better the story the worse the illustrations and vice versa but not always.

Due lenti grandi e spesso opache possono essere un filtro invece che uno strumento per vedere meglio? È questo il primo elemento su cui cade l’occhio del lettore di Night bus, poetico graphic novel dell’artista cinese classe 1983, Zuo Ma, edito da Bao Publishing e così suggestivo da ricordare gli ingredienti più speciali delle migliori produzioni Ghibli.
