by Johnny Ryan Portajohnny collects Johnny Ryan's "greatest hits" from his own self-published comic books as well as a host of anthologies like Zero Zero , Measles, Goody Good Comics and elsewhere.
John F. Ryan IV (born November 30, 1970, in Boston, Massachusetts) is an American comics creator, writer, and animator. In a throwback to the days of underground comix, Ryan's oeuvre is generally an attempt to be as shocking and politically incorrect as possible. Ryan started his career self-publishing Angry Youth Comix, a series of eleven mini-comic issues from 1994 to 1998. In 1998, he began showing his work to Peter Bagge, creator of Hate comics, who introduced the material to Eric Reynolds of Fantagraphics. In 2001, Fantagraphics began publishing volume 2 of the series. Among Ryan's creations there are the comic strip Blecky Yuckerella and the comic book series Prison Pit. In animation, Ryan has worked as story editor for the Looney Tuness and co-created the Nickelodeon show Pig Goat Banana Cricket with Dave Cooper. Ryan and Cooper have collaborated on a number of comics as well, usually under the pen name 'Hector Mumbly'. Ryan's illustrations have appeared in MAD, LA Weekly, National Geographic Kids, Hustler Magazine, The Stranger, and elsewhere. Ryan has also done work for clients such as Nobleworks greetings cards, Rhino Records, and Fox TV. His comics have been translated into Spanish, Portuguese and French.
This collection of Johnny’s earliest work is really funny. You can really see Johnny development his craft and style in these early Angry Youth Comic stories. It’s funny and obscene, and towards the end you can see more of his style take hold. As a nice little piece in the end we see some of his earliest work, which is really different from what we are used to now. I like it simply for the reminder that a cartoonist takes time to process their work and master their style. Johnny has achieved this and excelled in making the most obscure and distasteful stuff any cartoonist is making today. I love his work for that! If you’re able to get this cheap, do it. I’m glad I did.
As they say ... love or hate ..... spontaneous crude lewd erotic shit laughs. Prefer refined Prison Pit but dis ain't bad. Or ... rather it is bad that makes it good ? yeah .... intentional lowbrow gross out ala Crumb. Racist sexist unabashed and revelling in filth. Bought used copy at a hippie bookstore because I had too. Like stumbling cross a G.. Allin rekkid at a church garage sale.
Gloriously puerile and amazingly stupid, Angry Youth Comics is charged with an anarchic spirit. The adventures of simpering nerd Sinus O'Gynus and Loady McGee, a sulking misfit who resembles a grown up and acne-scarred Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes (or perhaps a cousin of Beavis and Butthead), culminate in crescendos of bloody horror as often as punchlines; the humor and horror complement one another quite well. Ryan has a knack for evoking the crushingly mundane as well as spinning weird flights of fantasy into gut-busting shaggy dog jokes.
