Star The Triumph of Nerd Culture engagingly reveals how the most popular film franchise of all time sprang from the mind of a deeply insecure nerd, who then inspired and betrayed a generation of fans.
In Star The Triumph of Nerd Culture, Josef Benson offers an unauthorized and provocative expose of the most popular film franchise of all time. Fueled by George Lucas’s insecurities and a fervent fan-base who felt betrayed when Lucas defiled the original films, Benson presents the conflict between Lucas and Star Wars fans as comparable to the twisted relationship between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Just as there is a riveting saga within the Star Wars universe that centers on the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker and the redemption of Darth Vader, so too has a saga unfolded in relation to George Lucas and Star Wars fandom.
Star Wars fans both love and hate Star Wars and George Lucas. He is equally responsible for their pleasure and pain. Star Triumph of Nerd Culture delves deeper into the Star Wars universe than any book has gone before, including an illuminating look into why Lucas sold Lucasfilm to the Disney Corporation and how the sale affected the franchise. After reading this book, fans will never be able to watch Star Wars in the same way again.
A good overview of George Lucas, his creation of Star Wars, and his interactions with fans. Lucas has gone from wanting to destroy the studio system to becoming a studio himself. While much of this information could probably found elsewhere, there are tidbits of interesting info. The subtitle of the book is somewhat misleading because nerd culture doesn't really triumph, but George Lucas (who is described as an asexual nerd) does.
Quite an interesting book. I spotted a few typos in the book, but that's a minor issue. The biggest concern I have with the book is theorizing and taking about George Lucas' lack of a sex life. Give the man some privacy. That's none of your business. This book fires many shots at many people.
I wasn't sure what to expect from this going in, but it's about Star Wars so I grabbed it from the library. What I discovered with a mixture of well known facts about George Lucas and some bizarre speculations.
This book is absolute garbage. For whatever reason the author is obsessed with George Lucas' sex life and makes sure to mention some sort of sexual speculation in every chapter. Clearly made to pander to the "Star Wars fan" that loves to hate the franchise.
