The Victorious Mind: How To Master Memory, Meditation and Mental Well-Being

Rate this book
Master your memory and silence your mind - scientifically.

Can a secular approach to combining memory and meditation reduce negative thoughts and heal your life? And can such a step-by-step program removing thinking completely, possibly even create the "bliss" talked about by the gurus for thousands of years?

The Victorious Mind tells the story of how one man overcame the mental distress that imprisoned him in a “highly functioning manic-depressive” identity, and almost took his life. Dr. Anthony Metivier, film studies scholar and founder of the Magnetic Memory Method, used just three practices: self-inquiry meditation, memory training, and “biohacking.”

But more than a story of self-transformation, The Victorious Mind offers detailed guidance through the techniques Anthony used to release himself from the haze of lithium along with the illusion of self.

You'll learn:

How to meditate using a variety of techniques and avoid mistakes by getting stuck with the wrong approaches
How to "stress test" your diet, sleep, and other lifestyle issues, so you can weed out problems strategically
How to use meditation to improve your memory by creating a Memory Palace Network. A full walk through of a 32-verse mantra from the non-dual tradition takes you through everything.

Both entertaining and erudite, brain-science informed and stripped of BS, The Victorious Mind takes you on a journey through cities of the world and Memory Palaces of the mind, where there are bad acid trips along the way but also Buddha Smiles.

To help you on your way, The Victorious Mind is peopled with a surprising range of figures, from members of his Magnetic Memory Method community and Ancient Greek mnemonists. You'll meet secular-spiritual teachers of today such as Sam Harris and Gary Weber, whose translations of ancient Sanskrit self-inquiry texts play a central role in Anthony’s self-transformation.

The Victorious Mind is ideal not just for those struggling with mental illness but for anyone suffering mental malaise – whether it’s digital amnesia and scatterbrain, depression or “control freakism.”

The best part?

The combination of several techniques has been scientifically proven to help ease the suffering created by the mind. Metivier covers the research, how he applied it, and how anyone can do the same.

What sets this book apart is also what defines its key message: there’s no one technique, no one path to freedom and quality of mental and physical life, and there’s no one teacher. Rather, it’s the act of assembling the insights and practices of others with experimentation in one’s own body and mind that will enable us to be our own teachers, bring peace of mind and focus, and free ourselves from negative thinking.

In the last two months, I was in a miserable state of my mind abolishing my good habits one by one and begging for a way to get me back on track. As Lao Tzu says, “When the student is ready the teacher will appear.” So, I found Dr. Anthony Metivier’s latest book, the Victorious Mind. I should say that it is highly recommended for anyone interested in memory techniques and elevating their life. It is a combination of practical memory and meditation techniques, and like any other knowledge, if left without implementing, it will become pointless.

This is for the audiobook. The ebook will not be available until April 30, 2020.

This is more than a nicely written, entertaining and informative book. It is those things. But, I walked away from this first listening of the book convinced that it is a significant work.

The Victorious Mind is part memoir, part presentation of a detailed and far reaching introduction to the Memory Palace method of memorizing information, and a thoughtful exploration of how to live our lives and use our minds in ways that contribute to the happiness and well-being of all of us. Dr. Metivier’s work is designed to draw in readers and listeners and invites us into engagement with information, and positive service to others with his techniques that include frequent use of memory palaces, meditation, and the things we all know we should do such as eating a healthy diet, exercise, and abstaining from alcohol, tobacco, and substance abuse.

I believe that now, during the international pandemic of the Coronavirus, is a good time to consider the practical wisdom of The Victorious Mind as we search for new ways to do things, including how we assist students, at all levels, to succeed despite in-person classes being closed everywhere. Admittedly, this book doesn’t provide THE answer to resolve our problems, but it does contain tools that I believe can help as we move forward.

I really enjoyed this compelling and thought provoking book. The author has succeeded in so many ways in the presentation of his ideas and providing concrete exercises and resources in different media for the reader/listener. He also does a great job as the voice talent in his performance as the narrator for the audiobook. In short, I recommend this book to just about everyone. This book has reach. As stated in the beginning of this review, I think this is a significant work.

I was recently having a conversation with Anthony Metivier (disclaimer: I know Anthony in a professional capacity), and the conversation turned to meditation. Anthony told me that there is significant cross-over between memory techniques and meditation, and that by using memory techniques he has memorised information that neutralises thought. I was intrigued, and he directed me to this book to find out more.

Occasionally I read books that explode my life, turn my word upside down, and give me endless new avenues to explore. I read a lot, and it doesn't happen often, but when it does, wow! This was one such book. I struggled to put it down, I was so gripped by Anthony's story and the implications of the information and techniques he shares.

This book is like falling through the back of a wardrobe and ending up in Narnia. I can only encourage you to read it for yourself and apply what you learn. A magical new world awaits.

Mental Illness, Mental Mastery and Spiritual Awakening

Anthony Metivier tells the riveting story of how he turned his life around by cultivating the physical and mental skills outlined in his YouTube videos and course materials. Practising these disciplines enabled him to overcame suicidal depression and psychosis to the point where he has been able to dispense altogether with psychiatric medications and he is now a picture of physical health and psychological well being.

His description of how mastering the power of memory was the major turning point in his life will be an inspiration for most of his students but his experience with the teachings of Gary Weber is the real climax of his story.

Gary Weber teaches self-enquiry in the tradition of Ramana Maharshi. Contrary to most contemporary neo-advaitin teachers, Gary’s students actually get results because his teaching demands an ongoing commitment to a rigorous program of daily spiritual practice. Learning to chant Sanskrit shlokas is a formidable obstacle for most people but not for Anthony who with no prior knowledge of Sanskrit memorized 32 stanzas of the Ribhu Gita without any difficulty. You will need to read Anthony’s book to discover how his life was transformed as a result.

I can confirm from my own experience that Anthony’s methods for memorizing Sanskrit are as effective as he says they are but if I can be allowed a quibble, Gary Weber’s selection of verses from the Bhagavad Gita, Dancing Beyond Thought, would be a better entry point for most neophytes than the Ribhu Gita simply because of the wealth of resources available in the case of the Bhagavad Gita. (I am thinking in particular of the Winthrop Sargeant edition of the Bhagavad Gita which includes a detailed grammatical analysis of each verse and alternate translations for every word in the text. Also it is easy to find recordings of the Bhagavad Gita on the web which enable looping on individual verses. This is a great help for learning to chant the verses.)

Anthony is a gifted writer but The Victorious Mind could have benefited from criticism by a professional book editor. In its current form, it contains enough material for at least three books so some readers will probably resort to some judicious skipping, depending on where their interest lies. But no matter what stage of emotional, intellectual and spiritual development you are at, you will find ample food for thought and cues for action here.

Excellent book

After looking into memory techniques myself I ended up enrolling on Anthony Metivier's Magnetic Memory Masterclass and I must admit that it is an incredible resource that has helped me significantly. This book was therefore always something that I wanted to read after finding out about it and I finally have, and it was brilliant.

Firstly, i hate autobiographies. I can't understand why anyone would want to read about anyone else's life unless they've done something hugely significant. Therefore I was a bit cautious about reading this, but it isn't a standard autobiography. I don't know what you would class this book as, he uses events in his life to introduce the techniques he used to overcome them. So you're not really reading an autobiography, and you're not really reading an instructional book. It's strange.

Although I knew most of the techniques from his online course I was still interested in the book, I still found myself reading it at every opportunity. This goes to show that he is a very good author and has spent a significant amount of time carrying out research and experiments into this.

If you're looking to improve your memory, this book is for you, if you're after a story about someone at rock bottom and how they climbed out of it, this book is for you. It really is odd. The only thing that I didn't really have interest in is the sanskrit and some of the philosophy at the end. But, the beauty of the techniques is that you don't need to apply them at all, they are there as an example for you to manipulate to benefit yourself.

Great book

This book is an interesting blend – it’s the author’s personal story of coming through mental health issues, and both a thesis and a how-to on blending meditation with memorisation techniques.

The argument for combining meditation and memorisation techniques is that there’s synergy – meditation helps concentration, which helps memorisation, and memorising the right stuff (e.g. Sanskrit sutras) helps your meditation practice.

By memorisation techniques, the author means the “memory palace” system. That is, taking something you are having trouble memorising, linking it to some creative images, and then placing the images in a room you know well. This is an ancient system of memorisation, that has worked across different cultures for millennia. The book has a lot of tips on creating your own system.

My only criticism is that the book needs an edit. The instructions in the book on developing a system (i.e., the homework) aren’t set out in the clearest fashion. The author talks a bit about “teaching by abandonment” (i.e. letting the student figure it out) and while I wholeheartedly agree, I hope he does a second edition that’s more closely edited.

I’m making a 3-month experiment of the book, so I’ll update this review around February and report on how I’ve gone with the homework.

It teaches all this through incredible story telling from author's own experiences. Fascinating book and very useful.

Practical and actionable on-the-spot exercises for your brain. Incredible holistic approach to mental well-being and good memory.

I use the memory techniques to study taxation and business law. Dr. Metivier really helped me to improve the learning speed and information retention.

While searching for non-relgious and non-spiritual books on meditation, I stumbled across this book. I have heared about mnemonics before in tv-shows and some articles, though I never thought it was something that you could pick up and use a few days afterwards. This book gave me a great entry point to mnemonics and medition. It includes personal experiences and useful tips which are not to hard to make use of. Interesting and benefitial read.

Way longer than it should be, but the chapters about memory techniques were definitely worth it. Such incredible skills to have in an age of information.

I got the audio book and I loved it. I am looking forward to the print edition.

It is a new frontier showing me that great things can be accomplished, great peace can be achieved and maintained. The limits seem to be what effort I put into it but the effects can be maintained with consistent review.

Before this book, I didn't know that proven memory techniques could provide peace and mental well being, especially that can apply just as well for the average person as the advanced student.

Based on the evidence, they can. What memory scientist Dr Metivier shares is as convincing as knowing water can quench the thirst of a desert traveler.

I am so tired of anecdotal advice, books and programs that I was refreshed by Anthony’s research and application of peer reviewed methods. Standing on the shoulders of giants, in this book we see Dr. Anthony Metivier is today’s unassuming giant further developing, applying and sharing his research and memory methods helping others improve their mind, gain peace in their life, and improve their relationships. Once this foundation is built, an unstoppable force is released within and so much more is within reach.

No doubt today I have been given the keys to a better mind and a better life, I hope you get these keys as well.

A fascinating exploration of the healing of mental-emotional illness, the cultivation of states of awareness through various means, meditative self-realization, and modern developments of ancient memory techniques.

Well written and self aware, this book is a must read for any lovers of cognitive science and the evolution of memory methodology. He is a wonderful Instructor and genuinely interested in the growth of his students. You should definitely take the time to follow his work online and connect with him via social media.

Clinically, other than meditation, I couldn’t recommend several of the methods of self-cultivation that seem to have been helpful to Dr Anthony. Do deeper research and find an in-person instructor if you decide to take his recommendations.
But, as he reminds us, the value an author brings is not always in their ideas, but in the discussion their ideas make possible.

Overall, I am very happy to have read this book, and intend to study the rest of his vast body of work!
After all, “memory is not something you have, it’s something you do!”

(Trigger Warning: for those made uncomfortable by stories of suicide ideation, drug use, or self-harm…Or academic torture.)

I believe this book needs some serious editing and rewriting. I’ve listened to the author’s podcast, and it gives the same messy impression—wanting to cover too many things at once, all coming out disorganized and lacking rhythm or coherence. It’s not enough to have a plan and a nice index; you have to deliver in every paragraph and every sentence.

As the author himself says in his podcast, this is not a well-written book—but it might still be worth reading for the information it conveys.

Or maybe not. There are far better books on memory palaces, and many more on meditation, but I think he fails to connect the two—other than by saying that it worked for him and by providing what I presume are better book references.

The backstory, in its attempt to introduce storytelling (oh, how tired I am of this) and context, ends up being too personal, unnecessary, long, and repetitive.

The chapter where he details an example of building a memory palace is both useful and boring.

The metaphysical section at the end may have personal meaning for the author, but it could easily be cut—along with about 50% of the book.

I would not recommend it.

There is so much waffle in this book. If you're looking for a life story, endless digressions and little practical value, this is your book. I value the author's other media (youtube, podcast, and blog posts), this book, however, misses the mark. Perhaps it's more of a passion project, a memoir of his spiritual journey, but it's certainly not a book I would recommend for practical straightforward advice.

One of the main pillars of Dr Anthony Metivier’s teaching on Memory and Meditation is that you need to take action to reap the benefits of these activities. You should take the following actions, purchase this book, read and absorb the material within, use this knowledge to help you achieve the goals that you should set for yourself.

Sorry, I think this book needs heavy editing to make it more readable and useful.
kudos to the author for writing it with a firm intention to help others. However, he did so much jumping back and forth and leaving important steps unexplained.
Maybe his podcasts and you tubes are better, but I found it difficult to follow his argumsnts because of lack of organization and clear logic.

Pages filled with wisdom that will put you on a path of enlightenment. My journey started when I read Moonwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer. If like me you are new to the topic of mnemonics Moonwalking with Einstein is a great start. The Victorious Mind by Anthony Metivier goes beyond memory and will have you covering a wide range of practices for mental well-being to promote effective memory techniques further. Anthony provides a deep dive into the mnemonics community.

Essential reading for everyone, The Victorious Mind by Anthony Metivier is a book I recommend to all my colleagues as a teacher. This book had a positive impact on my pedagogical choices in unexpected ways. So much resonated on many levels. I have certainly gained a sense of 'Floreant Dendritae' as my brain cells were well nourished by practicing the methods illustrated by Anthony Metivier.

I have added Happiness Beyond Thought by Gary Weber to my reading list and many others. This book will expand your reading list and have you recommending it to everyone as it goes beyond memory.

With well-placed examples Anthony shares his personal story which certainly had an impact.
This book provides a deeper understanding, making learning more memorable, and impactful. The importance of context can not be underestimated and Anthony makes excellent use of creating context throughout. There are many examples such as 'the lion tamers'.

Topics are well linked to theory and practice that will leave you in awe. The book draws on wealth of information presented that expands and concludes in an arc towards the end.

I am thankful to Anthony Metivier for opening many new doors to an unexplored world of self. The carefully selected insights and references are appreciated from Gary Weber, Nietzsche, Fred Ulfers, and even the historical insights from Augustine of Hippo.

This book will surprise, delight and leave you contemplating for hours. I have been motivated to start practising a range of techniques covered. From ego to becoming more self-inquisitive each chapter covered has been useful, covering various aspects of my life. Even the gym has been impacted by The Victorious Mind.

The contextualised referencing to Wim Hoff, Jordan Paterson, David Berglas, and Tony Buzan is insightful shared wisdom done well.

An excellent work. I've followed Anthony for years through his podcast and YouTube videos, and this is an excellent summation of his core work, and well worth the time. I'll listen to it again, and take more notes in key parts. Far from being a manual for memory athletes, his connection between the "memory practices" and meditation, general mental and emotional well-being, taking control over your attention, and how all of the "hacks" amount to playing silly games that bring more joy and wonder to your life, are all on-point. I will be implementing more and more of the practices as I can, and incidentally, reducing my social media footprint as I take my interior life back. This isn't a point of his, but for me, it's an inevitable consequence.

I cannot grade the author on my inability to gain much by reading this book. It took many turns down roads I was not interested in traversing. That makes nothing bad, just not my road map to learning what I had hoped by reading this title. If you are reading my review to decide whether or not to buy and read this book, I suggest that you look at many other reviews and gently add mine into the mix. It is clear that Anthony had a troubled number of life experiences, mine were different by a lot. Neither should be graded by the other. Carry on, read if you will and I hope it helps you.

audiobook. The next stage of human evolution splits here. You can learn the memory strategies here or your can become a pawn. You have about 10 years to make that decision before its too late. Just like a student must learn to read by the 3rd grade so that they can then read to learn; one will need to master these memory techniques in order to not backslide in the coming age where AI will take over or merge with humans.

se stai cercando un manuale sulle tecniche di memoria, ci sono alcuni capitoli utili a metà/fine libro, per il resto sono storia personale dell'autore e tecniche complementari al palazzo della memoria. Per ammissione stessa nella parte About the Author

"What separates Anthony from the others in the memory training world is that he doesn't focus on long strings of digits or training for memory championship. He offers simple tecniques for memorizing the information that improves your daily life"

Avrei preferito un saggio/manuale step by step su come creare e far funzionare il Palazzo della Memoria. In parte è lo scopo di questo libro, ma si dilunga troppo in dettagli che a me risultano poco interessanti e utili.
