Number 9 in the series and my second least favorite of the lot.
The S-Squad goes to the Congo to track some doctors and then run up against a lost tribe with dinosaurs as pets. The plot was a bit jumbled for me on this one and I did not really get into this one. The book focuses a lot on Sgt. Hynd this time as he is "getting too old for this sh!t". There is a bit more character development which bring the squad a bit more to life in the end.

Operation Dinosaur!

Captain Banks and his S-Squad are sent to The Congo in central west Africa to retrieve some lost WHO members.

When they find their campsite things don’t look so good.

The village is deserted. The natives and the doctors from WHO are all missing.

They find strange footprints leading down to the river and one of them looks like a giant animal.

It turns out they are not too far away from the guessing. Raptors are in The Congo. Looks like S-Squad has another one of their monster-in-the-house episodes.

Four stars. ✨✨✨✨

Very fast paced book or aka short story...140 pgs! This is my first time reading this author and I’ve been on a search for the next Matthew Reilly/James Rollins type writer. I think this would have captivated me more if it was longer and I knew some background on the characters. My fault for not starting with book 1. Also there seemed to be a lot lines from one of my favorite movie Aliens in this book. I wonder if it’s one of the authors favorite movies also. Hmmmm

A mission to the Congo is to trace a team of captured WHO medics to a lost world.

The Squad are are up against natives and animals that were thought to be extinct.

William Meikle’s Operation Congo (S-Squad Book 9) is a delightful continuance of his monster-fighting Scottish military squad stories. They’ve been all the way around the world, fought giant spiders, Nazi zombies, and all sorts of beasties, and now they’re headed into the jungle. A team of WHO doctors who were investigating a rash of deaths in a remote village have gone silent. The squad’s job is to slip in, find out what happened, and extract the doctors. They end up finding a mysterious walled village in the middle of nowhere, but what’s of more concern is what’s surrounding it–dinosaurs! (Or, well, close enough.) They’re going to have to rescue the doctors from inside the town–but how?

I love the S-Squad books. Everyone in the squad has plenty of personality, and they have their own in-jokes and patterns of behavior that continue and change from book to book. They’re totally believable and fun to read about. This time around, there are also some fascinating characters on the WHO team who fit into the plot in really neat ways.

I can’t say much more without spoiling this short book, but I guarantee you some delightful adventure, blood and guts, dinosaur-like monsters, lots of gunfire, an intriguing town full of people, and even a hint of romance! You don’t have to have read the whole series in order, but there are gradual changes to the squad, such as some of the soldiers dying and being replaced, and bits of history that come out about them, so I recommend reading it in order just for the full effect.

The Lost World and Jurassic Park come together to create another adventure for the luckless S-Squad creating a thoroughly enjoyable romp through the Congo. This time, the severely bad Baddie, has an upper class English accent and attended University here as well, no doubt this contributed heavily to his extreme mental fragility. It is great, these stories are utter hedonism. In these " End of days" times this is just what you need to lose yourself and escape vacillating politicians and the unending flood of gloom. Write on Mr Meikle!

The S-Squad has been sent deep into the jungles of Congo, far from where even a satellite phone can call for help. A WHO team of medics have been captured and more than just the natives are restless. As usual things quickly move from bad to worse as the team is split up and the monsters start coming from all directions. Can the team and their targets return back to safety?

I absolutely love this series and I was thrilled the Scottish lads finally managed to get a ticket to somewhere warm. I also really enjoyed how a few of the squaddies had some profound growth in their character arcs and this was a true joy to read – along with the big beasties and everyone needing to steer clear of being a tasty snack for the monsters.

If you’ve read even one of the previous books (and I can’t recommend strongly enough you give them all a whirl – this is the best series) you’ll know roughly what to expect. Our team of Scottish heroes are sent into the back of beyond to rescue a group of civilians. Things are nothing like what they appeared to be at first glance and soon monsters are trying to eat everyone in sight.

With loads of bullets flying and more than a few wise cracks from our squaddies this is yet another delightful romp of a book. I was particularly impressed with both the high number (and decent quality and placement) of the quotes managed by the squaddies referencing the movie, Aliens. A few scattered quotes are normal for this series, but in this book the author really outdid himself.

If you’re looking for a complicated plotline or an intricately woven story this won’t suit what you’re after. But if you love a bunch of wise-ass soldiers being brave, fighting the monsters and rollicking along then this is definitely the book for you. I love this series and can strongly recommend them all – especially this addition.

A team of WHO medics are missing in the Congo while examining locals for what could be a dangerous new medical emergency. There is no sat phone or back up, and a single guide with a boat to take them down river to where they find the deserted camp and signs of death and violence. The medics are nowhere to be found and their spooked guide flees at the sight of the an animal found in the village cooking pot. What trouble are the team in this time?

The team have exchanged the dry desert heat for the humid jungle heat but are still struggling with the weather conditions. The few clues they have seem to point to the missing medics having found that the locals were likely poisoned by an environmental factor rather than the 'plague' that had been feared when the team arrived. Having found a few bodies and a trail leading deeper into the jungle, S Squad are certainly not prepared for having to deal with their own version of Jurassic Park. Raptors in the jungle and unfriendly natives are only going to be the start of their problems.

S Squad plan to quietly infiltrate the enemy camp to release the prisoners but that all goes to hell in a handbasket when matters become more urgent, leading to the team having to split up. Hynd, Wilkins and Davies are concentrating on trying to get the medics away from their captors and into the safety of the jungle, while Banks and Wiggo have to deal with the angry townspeople who hate having their fun disrupted. Getting separated in the jungle environment just turns a bit situation into a total nightmare.

Hynd seems to be struggling the most with the latest mission, finding it harder to motivate himself to continue on with being a part of the squad, which concerns Banks. Finding out the back story to his private life in the last book makes you really feel for the man as he wonders if he can keep doing this kind of thing. I like seeing that promotion hasn't stop Wiggo from being his moaning self! I just love his character, his stupid comments and humour, and yet watching him flip the switch to excellent soldier whenever he's needed.

I don't want to go into the raptors story too much and ruin the plot but it's not just as straight-forward as evading them in the jungle, although that does play a part. Banks and Wiggo are faced with a whole new raptor scenario to deal with which I very much enjoyed reading.

Good Raptor Fun

S Squadron standard(ish) - lovable salty Scots operatives go into ultra-hazardous Congo to rescue WHO doctors and encounter monstrous resistance.
William Meikle serves up his trademark combo of danger, death, and adventure.
I thoroughly recommend it to adventure readers.

If you’ve read any of the previous stories in the series, then you’ll know what to expect: military fantasy, this time centred around a King Kong-esque tribe of dinosaur worshippers. For some reason, Mr. Meikle decided to add a splash of romance to this instalment and, while I didn’t really find it necessary, it didn’t detract from the story at all. Really looking forward to the next story.

The Ninth book in the series, it sees the squad head down into the jungles of the Congo in search of a missing WHO team. What they find is a burned village, destroyed equipment, two bodies, and a mysterious animal leg in the village's food pot.

This one proved a tad slow at the beginning, but once it got rolling it never stopped.

Review of this book.

More excitement than the last book! This book was even better than the last book. The ending was one that I did not see coming. What a shock! Super writing on the part of the author! You must stay awake at night thinking of new and exciting books to write. Keep up the fantastic work.

I love this series so much. Every time a new novel comes out, I get so excited, and this one was no different. Over time, the author truly makes you fall in love with these characters, and really feel for them. I can't wait for the next one.

Rollicking Adventure

Recently found this author and surprised that his stories closely match a fair few of the role playing game Adventures I wrote and ran for Twilight 2000 back in the early 1990s. If you want escapism with a military backdrop and legends/myths combined then this is your man. Recommended.

A great addition to a great series

This series does keep getting better. I really like how the characters developed over the course of the series. I know it feels very Indiana Jones with it's action. But it's a great Read nevertheless.

Pretty good book even with the feathered dinosaurs (dinosaurs should never have feathers). The S-Squad sent to rescue a group of health workers end up finding a lost city in the jungle.

On the plus side gun toting action on the minus shallow charactersm you can interachange them without much difference, still fighting dinosaurs was nice enough.

Possibly my favourite yet

LGBT+ content and dinosaurs! So very happy. As much far fetched nonsense as the previous 8 books but still delightful.
