A stubborn brat. A smiling sadist. Perfection...or disaster?
Ewan McKinney knows what he doesn't want: rules, responsibilities, or having to talk about his feelings. What he does want is harder to pin down, too much damage in his past to see it clearly. But if he doesn't, he risks being scarred again, and losing his new-found Sir into the bargain.
Nate Scott has caused a lot of pain in his time, but he always knew it was wanted. With Ewan, he's not sure. Nate can't read Ewan's mind; his brat is like a black box, impossible to tease open. But their shared kinks take them into dangerous territory, and Nate must convince Ewan to confide in him before one of them does something irreversible.
To make this work, Ewan will have to put his trust in the one man who has never let him down. And if he can't? It could mean the end of everything.
A Collar For His Brat is part of the Santa Rita Doms universe, and an ongoing serial.
3.5 stars I did a reread of the 3 previous books as it had been an awful long time between books here. I do really love the characters and the world that this series encompasses. The timeline intersecting with major moments in HBND is like several “Easter Eggs” for fans who love details.
And I really enjoyed these two getting to know each other without the interference of others. They are both complex, Ewan most of all. And both of them learning how to get rid of past hurts and the disruption of their personal status quo to take a leap towards a relationship is both painful and enlightening.
Nate is a special guy. He sees something in Ewan that nobody else does and Ewan has the hardest time trusting anyone. The moments after scenes where Ewan completely opens himself up to Nate are pretty wonderful.
I did think that we were going to get a bit further into their story in this one but we still don’t seem to have gotten anywhere near where we currently are in the HBND series. In that series Ewan & Channon have developed a very special friendship. We just barely get glimpses of the start of it here. So this wasn’t as satisfying a read as I’d expected.
But I do hope we get more from these two because they are still far from the HEA and I really want to see Ewan get that collar.
Ohhhh, I was so happy to get back to Nate and Ewan and get a new story from them! They are just SO SO different from Jack and Channon, it's so refreshing.
Definitely still some kink, and I love the two of them working through this whole relationship together - having to talk things out, having to separate Dom and kink from work life. I love it so much. Definitely read the spin-off series with Nate and Ewan, if you're a fan of Channon's story, I think you'll enjoy this just as much! Maybe more!
I love Ewan and Nate. They are a great, messy couple finding their way. I'm so glad we have them to balance out perfect Jack and Channing.
In this book we see a few of the instances that we've seen through the lense of Jack and Channing but now with the POV of Nate and Ewan and I enjoyed it very much. It's nice to get some POV from Nate on why he likes the bratty, messy, sub that Ewan is.
I actually finished this book some time ago, but it wasn’t showing up on Goodreads. I love everything I’ve read by R. J. And was lucky to get this book to read before publication.
Ewan is the perfect bratty submissive and Nate a near perfect sadist. All I can say is please keep this series going. I know I’ll aways come back for more. All the Santa Rita Dom books are wonderful.
I’ve been waiting MONTHS to read something new from Mrs Moray, in the Santa Rita universe. And it finally came out last Friday, I was so so happy, even though I knew this would be a short read (finished this part in less then two hours). But I was just so glad to read how Nate & Ewan became and as a couple, and also reading their POV on scenes that already happened in His Boy Next Door: Season Two series.
My favorite couple will always be Jack & Channon though, and there were a couple of instances that I felt that both Nate or Ewan, were very judgmental about the kinks of others, such as Jack, and also demeaning about Channon. I really hope in the future episodes, this will become less, because that really put me off a lot and with Nate in particular. Especially because Jack already trusted and invited Nate to join in some intense scenes with Channon. And I don’t like the idea of Nate turning out to be two faced with Jack & Channon.
The good + Nate taking his aftercare very seriously + Nate taking care of a reluctant Ewan + Ewan getting to be his bratty self around Nate + Nate crossing all the lines because he wants to, just like Ewan + Ewan fessing up to breaking Nate's 'stupid rule' + Nate forcing communication, no matter how hard it is for Ewan + Rules Ewan can break when he wants a punishment
The bad - Nate didn't want to go to the tea party either. So why did he feel compelled to go anyway?
Quotes x "You bastard, I've done what you wanted. I played your stupid game. I went to that fucking tea party with you, and I didn't come for a week because you said, and, and if you don't let me come now, I swear to God I will bite you!" x "Are you cuddling me?" "Yes. Deal with it."
Ewan is so self-sabotaging and Nate basically has a full-time job running after Ewan to put him back together again. It's kind of adorable. I know Ewan doesn't believe the sub is 'the one in charge', but he certainly has Nate wrapped around his little finger. A delightful relationship. Would definitely recommend these books.
**I was provided an arc with the understanding I would provide an unbiased review.**
I do so love Ewan, and Nate, and Ewan and Nate together. I really enjoy Ewan's take on Jack and Channon too.
Ewan is so obnoxious, in the best way, and I love that Nate enjoys exactly who Ewan is. It's wonderful to see them starting to open up to each other, and to see their relationship grow and get more meaningful. I want to see Nate get to spoil and take care of Ewan because, even as he fights it, and refuses to believe he deserves it, Ewan needs it in all the ways. I hope that some day Ewan will see in himself what Nate sees already, he deserves that.
I look forward to more of these two, they are hopeful in a way the world needs right now.
I'm a huge fan of "His Boy Next Door", but this series is making me love Nate and Ewan even more! For those who have read "His Boy Next Door", this book begins a month after Christmas, when Ewan and Channon meet for the first time and they all go to Mr. White's parties. Nate and Ewan are starting to have a more permanent relationship, and this story dives deeper into how that changes their dynamic.
Compared to Jack and Channon, Nate and Ewan have a more intense BDSM relationship. Nate needs someone to punish, and Ewan is "essentially, a bratty little masochist who wants to be flogged raw". We get to see a perfect example of this during the "high protocol" parties. Nate provokes Ewan into acting out and punishes him deliciously for it. Their mutual disdain for following all of Mr. White's rules made me grin. The concept of rules, following and breaking them, was a persistent theme. Ewan hates rules because he knows he can't follow them, but feels obligated to follow Nate's rules and be like other obedient subs (*cough* Channon). When he inevitably breaks a rule, Ewan panics because he doesn't want Nate to give up on him. I loved getting to see into Nate's head at this point as he figured out how to deal with Ewan without upsetting him even more. We see Nate being cruelly caring with Ewan a lot, but in this book Nate's genuine affection for Ewan comes across more prominently. I found it adorable how afraid each of them was to mess up their relationship--it's so obvious to me that they're perfect together.
One of my favorite parts of this book was getting to know Ewan's inner brat better. I've read other books about bratty subs, but this is the first time I've really understood them. "That was a thrill, making Nate react to him. Getting his attention, sharp and immediate. Being the focus of his whole world. Ewan got off on that, got off on making Nate look at him, making Nate punish him." At the same time, Nate told us more about what he needs: "It seemed impossible to have what he wanted,a willful little firecracker that hissed and spat and broke rules to get his ass beaten but wanted to be Nate’s and was ferociously jealous of his attention. And yet that was what he had. Ewan was, surprisingly, exactly who he’d been looking for, someone to butt heads against and subdue, and then care for in the particular, painful way Nate longed to."
While I thought this continuation was the perfect length, I'm still craving more of Nate and Ewan. Does the next chapter begin with Ewan's reward? Will Nate ever give Ewan a permanent collar? Can I please have more of their hilarious banter? I can't wait to see what comes next!
**I received an ARC. My review was requested but not required, and all opinions are my own.
A Collar For His Brat is M/M BDSM erotica and a bit (a lot) more hard-core than I’m used to. Debug is the 4th part in a serial and the first of ‘season two’.
But first. Full disclosure. I haven’t actually read season one of A Collar For His Brat. I am currently reading His Boy Next Door though – another of Moray’s serials – which is a parallel story featuring another couple who are friends with the Brat-couple. So in other words, I’m familiar with the characters and Moray’s BDSM universe, even if reading about Ewan and Nate from their own viewpoints is new to me.
The fact that Nate is a full-fledged sadist and Ewan’s a masochist in its truest sense did make this read less appealing to me. Simply because I don’t enjoy reading about pain and degradation – never mind that there’s consent. But, that being said, I still think Debug is an awesome story. Moray is a scarily talented writer and knows exactly how to suck readers into her world. The dynamics between Ewan and Nate, Ewan’s struggles to accept himself and his own desires, Nate’s efforts to understand Ewan and gain his trust. It’s absolutely mesmerizing. And to think that I couldn’t even appreciate the X-rated sections of this story and I still enjoyed it immensely! That’s saying something about Moray’s writing!
In all honesty, I’m actually astonished that I liked this story so much considering the roughness of the guys’ sessions. But the way Ewan and Nate were portrayed, their insecurities and doubts, it was simply beautifully done. Also, it was awesome to get a sneak peek at Channon and Jack from His Boy Next Door through the eyes of Ewan and Nate. I just love those kind of overlapping stories.
So in conclusion I can’t really say that I’ll continue to read the Brat-serial. It’s just too rough for my tastes. But I will keep reading anything else Moray writes. She’s just that great an author and absolutely knows her way around high-quality M/M smut. https://reflectionsofaswedishgirl.blo...
Oops, yes, look at that score. So maybe I’m a little emotional for Ewan. And maybe that’s being reflected in this spin- off series from His Boy Next Door, a series where, with Jack and Channon I started my foray (sp?) into this world, and thought no one could be better, no one could beat them.. Well not only did someone walk right in the front door, mess up the place a little then park his thick Scottish brogue on the sofa and his shoes on the table (something Nate would *kill* him for later! But be chuckling at the audacity of his ‘Brat’) waiting for his ‘Crown’, but it was a side character I already loved from HBND!
So maybe I am emotional, but I’m emotional with all books I read!
I found this book very enjoyable. This book is well written with so much emotion. It's a D/s BDSM, intense at times but loving story. I love Ewan and Nate together. I love their dynamic. Nate is sadistic but in a caring way. He gives Ewan what he needs, what they both need. Ewan may be a brat at times but it's only to get what he needs. As I am new to these books I definitely need to go back and read His Boy Next Door series. I recommend this book and series and I can't wait for more.

These two are my favorite couple. It was wonderful to revisit them and I hope for more! I loved the writing and the negotiation/emotional climax of Nate and Ewan was delicious. My only complaint was I wish it had been longer. I’m very excited for the next one.
I really understand what Nate sees in Ewan. He loves the challenge. Trying to figure out what makes Ewan tick, what turns him on, what makes him annoyed, what he's really feeling inside while he's scowling on the outside. It's so good and some of Ewan's antics really put a smile on my face. And then the punishment that follows...boy, was this one a doozy. Can't wait to read more about these two.
This book reminded me of the series His Boy Next Door. It’s great to see Nate’s side of things with Ewan at the graduation party for Mr. White’s student. Ewan is bratty as ever and he gets punished in all the ways. I liked that we finally get to see these two communicate! I feel like this has been a big struggle for Ewan.
A follow up story in the ‘A collar for his Brat’ series, this book brings more of the story together and our characters develop further. RJ puts the work in during the first few books so that we can really get some deep character development in this book and it doesn’t disappoint.
I'm still heavily invested in these characters and their relationship. As usual, this installment has plenty of sexy steaminess -- but it also shows the importance of communication in a kinky relationship, even when that part isn't always sexy.
Ewan stiffened, glaring at Nate hotly. Then he shuddered, closing his eyes for a moment, and said, “What do I have to do? Sir.” “I think you know,” Nate told him, warming to the role of ‘tyrannical boss about to commit a sex crime’. “You have a sexy mouth.” Ewan exhaled, a sharp gust of air. “I bet you say that to all the boys.” “It’s much sexier when you’re not talking,” Nate said, and Ewan made a rough sound, his hands clutching at his thighs.
This one was longer then the rest of the books so far Very sweet and comunication being worked on Very suprizingly when the brat actually behaves themselves Spice was a 3
Re-read 4/12/21: still just as hot the second time. These two are so beautifully made for each other!
Original review: Loved, loved, loved finally reading what happened at the tea party -- so hot and beautifully wrong! But the last talk between Ewan and Nate at Nate's house was amazing -- I love the two of them figuring out their way together, falling apart just a little from their own personal insecurities and then opening up, just the tiniest bit, to make the pain and connection deeper. Lovely!
