Between Worlds 6: Missing Home

When those you trust the most feel like strangers...

Juliana is trapped between Opa and Mom: Opa doesn't understand why his daughter ever left home, and Mom is doing everything possible to not spend time with her father. Family stories that began long before Juliana was born threaten to overwhelm her...unless she finds help. Juliana hopes that Elisabeth's century-old diary of drawings holds the key to getting her out of Monkey in the Middle.

Tata was Elisabeth's one and true confidante, and she feels his absence everywhere. When her sister comes home with a twisted ankle because schoolboys tormented her about Tata, Elisabeth fears that the problems Tata's absence causes will suffocate her. But with Mammi locking herself away in the workshop, Elisabeth must seek help from the very people Mammi despises.

In Between Worlds 6: Missing Home, Juliana and Elisabeth unlock painful family memories as they come to understand what absence really means for their families--and how unexpected discoveries can finally fill that void.

Lori Wolf-Heffner’s young adult novel Between Worlds 6 revolves around fourteen year old Juliana and the multiple challenges she faces. Moved from her childhood home to another city so her parents can be close to her grandfather who is suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, she must adjust to a new school, a new dance studio, and parents who are not emotionally there for them.

Dance is the most important thing in Juliana’s life. She faces a big trial with the new studio and worries that she will not pass. At the same time, she becomes the de facto caregiver for her grandfather who has hallucinations and forgets current events while becoming immersed in memories of Romania where he grew up in a German speaking community before immigrating to Candida.

Juliana’s mother avoids the grandfather and is emotionally distant with Juliana, spending most of her time managing a store. Juliana’s father is a truck driver who is on the road most of the time and misses important events in her life, such as the dance recital she is so concerned over.
Juliana discovers a sketchpad with drawings that her great grandmother, Elizabeth, made in Romania in the late nineteenth century when she was also fourteen. The story then moves between Juliana’s time in the present and that of her Elizabeth's who also had an absent father and emotionally distant mother. Elizabeth must take on adult responsibilities and put her own desires on hold as does Juliana.

This novel of growing up with pressures and trials will appeal to young and mid teenage readers who will identify with the main characters struggles. Her interactions with her grandfather, who has moments of lucid insights, and the discovery of her great grandmother’s sketches propels Juliana to find solutions to her problems. This is the sixth book in a series that follows Juliana’s life.

This book is all about connections - connections among family and friends, connections between the past and the present. The parallels between the lives of a girl, in the present, and her great-grandmother, as a girl, in the past, provide an interesting back and forth. The shared experiences are a nice reminder that we're all connected.
The descriptions of life, generations ago in Eastern Europe, provided a window to the past that I enjoyed. The author's attention to detail made me feel like I was learning something as well as being entertained.
Beyond the focus on family and friends, the book also touches on issues including Alzheimer's, religion, war, dance, and art.
How great to find a series that readers of all ages can enjoy.

Each story in the series feels more like you’re part of the Schuhmacher family. The writing is more and more evolved, and with each subsequent novel, the character development is growing. If you pick this one up first, you will easily determine the backstory of Juliana and Elisabeth so no worries. But it will make you want to read books 1-5 to catch up on what you’re missed. This is a great story for young readers and adults alike. Very much looking forward to #7 and #8 in the coming year.
