What do you get when you combine a prepper, government conspiracy, double-cross, and a Coronal Mass Ejection? Well, you get the basis for a very good post-apocalyptic story that is delivered in installments. Based on the first installment one should expect plenty of action as well as some prepper discussion that lends quite a bit to the plausibility of this story line. I received the first installment from a Bookfunnel give away and am now looking forward to reading the second installment. By signing up for the author's mailing list I also received a short story that provides a parallel story line to the main characters. D.C. Little has crafted a very entertaining story line. I received and Advance Reader Copy and chose to provide this review.

Awesome read and I look forward to the second part was not really sure about this series when I started reading but you find yourself caught in the story real fast and can set the book down.
It a story we all should know a little about how to survive if there is a major event to happen. Also it is a story of a military person who taught his son how to survive and the events happens the 5 year old son take over and proves his mother she was wrong for not trusting her husband and not wanting to learn as her son had how to survive. In a little bit you start to see the world they knew start to come apart and they know it going to get worst before it better and they must get to the bunker so they have food, water and other items they will need to survive.

What engaged me:

• The author caught my attention right from the beginning and drew me into the story with the opening scene with Blake.
• The descriptions of locations and emotions were well done, easy to visualize, and to feel. I felt I was a part of the scenes with Blake, Kris, and Tucker.
• The pacing of the story was neither too slow nor too fast.
• There was a smooth, coherent flow to this book.
• This story had a satisfying ending and was a great start for the rest of the series.
• This was a clean read.

I am looking forward to reading more about the characters from the Grant Us Mercy series.

I was given a free copy of this book from the author through My Book Cave. My review was voluntary and my opinions were my own.

This is a fairly short book and nice that it doesn't have a lot of editing issues. The story of the distant dad, plucky wife and capable kid caught in the apocalypse has generally been done before. There is a hint of conspiracy which may end up being interesting. The frequent reference to "mercy" became a bit wearing but I guess one person's luck is another's mercy. I wish this was not so short because it is hard to get invested in such a brief tale, but I will likely read book 2 to see what happens.

Hard to find an author that doesn't go for the shoot'em up bang, bang easy way of thinking. There will be a lot more to the end of life as we know it than just gun's and bullets. So far not a shot has been fired...just skill and preparation. Can't wait to read part 2.....UPDATE..
Just finished reading the series WOW..you won't be disappointed. Not very often that an author can write a complete series and not be lost along the way. The best part is the continuing of the story line in the upcoming new series..Note to the author. Thank you for a GREAT journey into your world.

I loved this book and am anxiously waiting for the next installment! The story follows the ups and downs of one prepper’s actions after a disastrous event affects everyone. The family helps others along the way and finally have reached their home, hunkered down in their well stocked bunker. What challenges come next?

I really like this book. Can't wait to read the next book in the series. Tucker is six years old, but his father taught him to be a prepper. He has is all together as his mom and him go in search of his father. Of course, there are some things you just can't prepare for. Follow this new series of DC Little's and see if there are things we might need to prepare for.

Very pleased

I’m so glad Amazon suggested this author. She is new to me but her writing is refreshing with little to no bad language or violence. A rue story of family love in the midst of natural disaster! Looking forward to the next book!

Too short, but a decent intro...

I've read plenty of fantastic apocalyptic stories that have set the bar pretty high for the genre. Expectedly, it's hard for any new series to grab my attention in ways that it hasn't been grabbed before. That being said, I already knew this first entry had its work cut out for it, especially when I saw how it was just over 100 pages long. Maybe that isn't fair, but alas, that's just how it goes when a genre must follow a formula. The question becomes how well an author does in making their story stand out from all the others, or if it can at least play on the same field.

This first entry was decent enough to get things going, despite its novella length. I wasn't wanting a quick little read, but at least I didn't hate the thing. It still did its one important job of introducing me to its characters, their personalities, and the newest apocalyptic threat. The writing style was fairly generic, but well-structured, and it kept my attention throughout. I was able to finish it in one sitting rather easily and didn't feel dread about what direction it was going. I did have trouble buying the dialogue of the 6-year-old, though. No child talks like that. Sorry.

I do feel obliged to mention that the shorter length, while making this an easy read, did kinda work against it at the same time. I don't feel like it offered me anything new that I haven't read before. Of course, it's probably too soon to tell, but...if all remaining entries are all short lengths like this, I might be a bit worried. I'll give it a chance, though. For all I know, this might be just a giant prologue with all follow-up entries being standard lengths. If not, well...sometimes even short novellas can pack a punch, so long as the author manages to do a good job in making me care.

As of now, I'm mildly intrigued to continue, though not in a rush. We'll see.

Post-Apocalyptic survival fiction is one of my favorite fiction genres. The characters that authors like D. C. Little create are easy for me to identify with because I am a survivalist. Even today, at 80 years old, I spend days, week, months in the desert, the wilderness, and the mountains, practicing and honing my skills. Needless-to-say, I can be rough on author who write or try to write survivalist fiction because their works of fiction are riddled with errors, mistakes that even the greenest survivalist wouldn’t make. Seldom do I find an author who gets it all right, but D.C. Little is one of those rare authors. She not only talks the talk, she and her family walk the walk.

Grant Us Mercy: Installment One is a captivating tale in what promises to be an exciting piece of serial fiction. The truth is that I’m not a big fan of episodic fiction because they remind me of those old serials that played between the two feature films, along with a cartoon and the news reel at the movies seventy years ago. They always ended with the hero or heroine in deadly peril, and we were left holding our breath until the next week to find out how they survived that encounter. Grant Us Mercy is a cliffhanger too, but the episodes end in such a way that leaves the reader satisfied, at least this the first installment did. At the same time there’s enough of a cliffhanger ending to make the reader want to read the next installment, it made me rush on over to Amazon and download the next five installments.

If you’re a survivalist at heart, you’ll love D. C. Little and her Grant Us Mercy episodic series. I’m binging and I think you will be binging too after you read Installment One. If I have anything negative to say about this series, it would be that I think D. C. could find a better way to name each episode than calling them “Installment #.”

The writer of this article has done an excellent job of letting the readers feel the emotions and surroundings of the book. The book is well written, easy reading, and does draw you into the storyline. When I was finished reading it, I immediately purchased the second installment of the story. That said, there are two points that disappointed me. The first point was it was too quick of a read. This could be read in one sitting easily, and I was looking for more of a novel length story, which brings me to point two. Is this the future of novels, where you pay for installments, which at the end, will be way more than buying a regular novel, that has the whole story contained? This is the first time I've actually run across this, as regular novels may have other stories in an additional book you purchase, but you never kept purchasing short stories to finalize an ending. This is just a random thought...

When the world goes dark, one family realizes that all their preparation means nothing if they don’t have each other. When DC Little begins to write her novels it is as if she is spinning a beautiful web and you are caught in the middle. She spins that web and you have a front row seat to see those characters develop and mature. You watch their lives and it is if you are right there able to talk to them but no they do not hear you, you are the audience to the lives they live. This is a brilliant read! It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. The world building is detailed and imaginative. This novel has strong, well developed characters and an interesting story line that keeps you turning the pages. I recommend this novel and would read more novels by this author. I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the novel.

For a start of a survival series, it's all around solid and a quick read at that. The essence of the series is not new and quiet common. Pick a natural disaster, have your family seperate and find each other, survive.

The conversations were realistic though at one point I was surprised an avg scientist Joe knew anything about the potential disaster. You have to suspend some disbelief with how smart the kid is. I know we all think our kids are smart but at 6 years old... quiet the stretch at that age.

All in all it was good. I have run into a rather long string of books I couldn't finish lately mostly due to suspend of disbelief or god awful characters and dialpgue. This had none of that.

Would recommend.

Not a bad opener to a series, looking forward to book 2!

Grant Us Mercy is the story of a military contractor and his family struggling to survive the initial onslaught of a coronal mass ejection which destroys the power grid and most electronics. The characters are flawed and excellent, with the beginnings of their story arcs beginning to come together. Tucker, the 6 year old is the standout so far, unusual for apocalyptic fiction. Its well plotted and well written. My only criticism is that its a little on the short side, but that's a minor criticism. 4/5 stars. Read and enjoy! On to book 2!

A great beginning

I so hope this series continues as it started: without profanity, no gore so far and 3 fantastic primary characters.
Dad to the rescue, realistically preparing and getting his family to safety. No unbelievable superhuman feats. Mom is understandably frustrated with her MIA undercover hubby. The kid... I love this kid. Full of hope and trust with such a fresh outlook on things. He's very bright but, like the dad, realistically portrayed.
If you like TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it) storylines and if you prefer "clean" stories, this series is off to a great start on delivery.

Actually I bought each of the above installments separately---one right after the other!! I wish I had bought the 5 together. I just could not stop reading this!! Essentially it is about survival after a massive natural occurrence that left the world as we know it--non existent. It is action packed.

It is about family and staying together come what may. It is also about community and helping one another!

Just an aside--I already bought and read installments 5-9 and am now working through the next in the series.

It's good to be prepared!!

I didn't expect to like this book, but I'm pleased to say it was really good! I usually pass over the emo book selections but this one kept my interest from start to finish. Blake had prepared for the end of civilization as we know it. He was away from his family and went to find them. The steps taken were real life and it made a lot of sense if this ever happened hear. I highly recommend this book and am getting the next one in the series.

This is my first book of 2021 and it is very intense for a novella. It’s the first installment of this series and it’s three MCs are strong and likable with human frailties. I enjoyed it very much and plan to read the next in the series soon.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this ebook from My Book Cave and this is my honest and freely given opinion.

Pretty good short book. Recommend it most definitely.

This was a pretty good story. I would recommend it to teenagers as well as adults. In this short story we learned that we don’t always know what the people we love are up to when we think they are up to bad they may be actually up to good. Forgiveness is more than profitable. Love is the better w

A great book about CME (coronal mass ejections)that wipes out our current lifestyle.

It is a book that is a survivalist in nature that is well written and brings out just how impotent we are against nature by ourselves or even in groups! I read this and I throughly did enjoy.

Enjoyed the plot although I got frustrated with the
fact that neither of the main characters tried to communicate with each other about their feelings
concerning their marriage. They seemed to somewhat put it aside for the moment. I am interested to read the next book...

Grant us mercy delivers.

A fast paced and excellent read. I loved how mature and smart little Tucker is. He is the one who makes the story come to life. Don't hold grudges that blind you to reality, is the underlying story. A great lesson. A good book.

Quite the page turner. Well written, engaging, fantastic character development. This is not a genre I usually read, but I think I might be spoiled after this one.

FYI These are definitely installments, not books, so be prepared to want more about 3 seconds after you finish!
