The war rages on... In the field and in Hugin's heart.

Hugin and his beloved Shesha have some trouble seeing eye to eye. Which makes Hugin uneasy since snakes are known to be selfish, obsessive, frivolous and cruel. Turning cold towards their lover from one moment to the next and abandoning them without remorse once they've had their fill. And Shesha is no ordinary serpent, but a naga.

Although that's only skimming the surface of all that's happening. After being commissioned as a Kings guard, Hugin is even more involved in the war since now it's now his duty to keep the King safe. But the Lufna King has many problems aside from the war. One of them being the council, who impede his every move due to the fact that they're starting to prefer the Prince on the throne instead. Meanwhile, the Prince has his eyes set on Munin and will do anything to bring him into the harem.

Nevertheless, the war is on its last legs since the brown Lufna army is getting bolder now that they're a step away from the palace. Hugin is fearful to confront them again since fate loves throwing darts at his fortune, and has horrible aim.

I don't remember Hugin being this annoying in part one, but man did he drive me mad in this book. Being submissive is fine, but not having a spine is very frustrating. I know he's a passive, but this is too much. He lets Shesha and Tahir (and others) walk all over him. Hugin must feel sad and neglected, which makes perfect sense. In the end, he always crawls back to Shesha. Hugin deserves so much better.
Speaking of Shesha, I'd really like to kick his ass for acting hot and cold towards Hugin. Again and again Shesha ignores him while giving all of his attention to Tahir. He justifies his behaviour by saying that he's giving Hugin, who supposedly comes first, some space. Yea, right. He doesn't respect Hugin one bit, like most people don't respect him.
And all poor Hugin wants is to be loved, and to have an exclusive relationship. Alas, that's not to be expected in this world.

For me the second book in this series wasn't as enjoyable as part one.
I felt less patient and tolerant of this fantasy world. Everyone sleeping with everyone feels too much like cheating. Especially Shesha, who doesn't seem to care about Hugin's feelings at all.

Park's writing style is the same as the one she used in book one, but I didn't like it as much as I did before. She keeps telling us that Hugin is so very pretty, how he has the perfect body, etc. It's all too much, really.

Even though this review is chock-full of complaints, I did enjoy reading it :)

Amazing sequel to this great story.

It picks off right where book 1 ended. We get a lot more details about the world and the main character is still Hugin, who is so complicated but sweet.

I feel like anything I say is a spoiler, but I will say that a lotttt happens in this book and is as good of a ride as the first. Very nicely developed world with great characters. It's interesting since I got pulled into their world which is very different so their logic and thinking as characters is quite different which for me makes it the more intriguing. Can't wait for the next one.
