This is a cozy mystery, and this is the first book in a new series. I liked some parts of this book, but I hated other parts of this book. I have to say I really hated the ending because I feel it was not a ending. It was like we were running a long and just stopped out of no where, and that was the ending. I hate books that do that even if there is going to be another book in the series. Maybe that is just me, but I need a good ending in a book. I also felt that it took me 30% of the book for me to care about the characters. I did love the mystery, and I love how the author did the witch parts in this book. I will read the second book in this series, but I will be hoping the ending will be a ton better in that book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Kensington) or author (Angela M. Sanders) via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review about how I feel about this book, and I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

BAIT AND WITCH by Angela M. Sanders brings corruption and magic to a new paranormal cozy mystery series set in Wilford, Oregon. A Victorian house that is the small town’s library is just the place for Josie Way to hide, or so she thinks.

Our protagonist, 25 year old Josie, arrives in town to be the new librarian. While working at the Library of Congress, she and a colleague overheard a conversation that deals with corruption. After they go to the FBI, her colleague disappears and Josie decides to get out of town until the trial. However, her hiding place isn’t as calm as she expected. The library is set to be torn down so that a retreat can be built. On top of that, Josie finds out she is descended from a long line of witches and her powers have suddenly been activated. The library books are actually talking to her. Finding a dead body the first night she arrives only adds to her terror. Will the crooks find her? What will happen to the library? Is Josie able to control her magic? How long will she spend in Wilfred? Who was killed on the library grounds and why?

The writing style felt warm and friendly. I was able to vividly see the picturesque library, the town, and the people of Wilford. I quickly related to Josie and wanted her to be safe and successful. Of course, things don’t always go smoothly, but I was rooting for her to win. The secondary characters were a mixed lot of the unusual as well as ever-day folks that you could meet in any small town. While their depth varied, it felt adequate for a first book in a series. Of the secondary characters, Rodney the cat stole the show.

Overall, this was a story that quickly drew me into Josie’s world. It was filled with the challenges of starting over against a backdrop of murder, corruption, secrets and more. This was a fun and entertaining read that I did not want to put down. I also enjoyed the way the historical aspects of the town and a possible romance were woven seamlessly into the story.

This is the first book in the Witch Way Librarian Mysteries series, and I highly recommend it to those that enjoy the genre. If you love share Josie’s and my love of books and libraries, this may be the next book for you. It was a fun, relaxing, and entertaining read and I can’t wait for the next book featuring Josie.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kensington Books and Angela M. Sanders via NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and are not biased in any way. Publication date is currently set for December 29, 2020. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

Due to the kind people at Netgalley I entered this series at book four and enjoyed it so much that I have purchased books one to three. This was of course their fiendish intent and it worked! I am not complaining since they have introduced me to an excellent series.

It was good to meet Josie in this first book as she finds herself as librarian in the small town of Wilfred, Oregon. I do not remember being aware in the fourth book that she was originally on the run and in hiding, not from the law but from the bad guys. She ends up fighting to save the possible closure of the library, at the same time as helping the FBI trap her pursuers before they kill her, and trying to work out how to control her newly discovered magic skills.

So there was a lot going on and the story was full speed ahead. Josie's magic is wonderfully entertaining and there are a lot of light hearted moments. Plus you have to love a book with a cat in it and Rodney is not just your ordinary, run of the mill cat. Lots of fun and I will be reading book two very soon.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ -Audiobook

Our main character, Josie, has taken a job as a librarian in the small town of Wilfred, Oregon. She’s excited to start her new job only to find out the library is set to close in a month. That’s not the only thing she finds out…she also discovers she’s a witch who can communicate with the books. Throw in a murder and you’ve got yourself a mystery that’s brimming with excitement and small town charm. Perfect for any time of the year if love witchy cozy mysteries.

Bait and Witch and Seven-Year Witch by Angela M. Sanders are the first and second book in the new paranormal cozy Witch Way Librarian Mysteries series. As with most cozy mystery series each of the books in the Witch Way Librarian Mysteries will contain their own mystery to be fully solved so they can be read as a standalone or in any order if choosing to do so. There is of course character development that carries over from book to book for those that read from the beginning.

Josie Way had been working at the Library of Congress when she became a witness to a corruption case and became a target for those involved. Looking to disappear until things were resolved in DC Josie found an opening at a small town library in Wilfred, Oregon where she thought she would never be found.

After arriving in Wilfred Josie finds her safe place was not as she expected with the library being housed in an old Victorian mansion which was slated for demolition. As Josie tries to figure out what to do next though she finds that she’s actually she’s descended from a long line of witches. Josie’s witchy roots help her in her new job and also finding the killers that seem to plague the small town.

Being someone that enjoys all different kinds of books I’m always drawn to those that cross different elements of genres together. Seeing that the Witch Way Librarian Mysteries series had a touch of paranormal I was immediately engaged in the story in the first book. I enjoyed the characters and knew I would return for book two after finishing the first. The second book went down a little in rating as I found that I thought it could have done a little better re-introducing the characters and setting than it did but the mystery was still a fun one to follow so I will continue on to book three.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

DNF at 42%

A boring book with a badly executed plot featuring one-dimensional characters.

At the 42% mark, the book has made no progress to develop the plot. Its primary focus has been on the town library which hangs in the balance. The intense focus on the library is at the expense of everything else in the book: the character development, witchy powers, the mysterious conspiracy that made our main character Josie pick up and flee to rural Oregon, and the story of the murdered person near the library grounds.

The characters are caricatures trying to be human but failing and the worst of the lizard-people in disguise gang is none other than main character Josie. Like a new born bird, squawking and blind she swoops in like an urban saviour to save the dumb, trailer living, rural townsfolk who apparently lacked the brain cells to come up with the stellar idea of writing a… report. Then, she just inserts herself in everyone's business asking questions about where people were, what they were doing, and why they think X might or might not be the perpetrator of the crime, as if she has the longstanding rapport to ask these questions when she's literally been there for a total of 4 days or so at this point.

It's just bad.

This is the first book in a new, cozy mystery series. Josie has taken a job in the small town of Wilfred - she needed to disappear from her job at The Library of Congress after overhearing a conversation between two men making an illegal deal. After reporting them to the authorities she needed to leave the area and hide until the criminals were behind bars. When she arrives in Wilfred, she find the library is in an old mansion, and she will live above the library in a small apartment. There's a murder on the grounds and Josie discovers the body. She also discovers she has some magical ability - in fact, she's a witch.

I enjoyed this cozy mystery and liked Josie and some of the characters in Wilford. This was not a hard-core murder mystery by any means, but was what you would expect from a cozy mystery with a paranormal twist. Rodney, the cat was an interesting character and added interest to the story.

Thanks to Kensington Books through Netgalley for an advance copy.

Bait and Witch by Angela M. Sanders is the delightful debut of A Witch Way Librarian Mystery series. Josie Way has been working at the Library of Congress. She is having lunch in a basement room with her co-worker and friend when they overhear two men plotting corruption. They report what they overheard, and the FBI becomes involved. The next day Josie’s co-worker has vanished which has Josie and his wife worried. Josie decides to lay low and takes a position as librarian in Wilfred, Oregon. The next day, Josie learns that beautiful Victorian the library resides in may be sold which means she will be out of a job as well as a place to live and a hiding place. Later that day, Josie takes a walk in the woods and finds a murdered woman. Josie has always felt a kinship with books, but she begins to notice some odd things after beginning her new job. Its almost as if the books are talking to her. That cannot be possible or can it? Bait and Witch is a fun story to read. I liked the interesting cast of characters that includes the library staff, town residents, Josie’s family, Rodney, the library cat. I liked getting to know Josie and look forward to seeing what happens with her next. The author has a casual writing style that makes this cozy mystery easy to read. The book moved along at a good pace and we are given vivid descriptions of Wilfred, the library, the shops, and its residents. I especially loved the descriptions of the Victorian the library resides in. There is humor scattered throughout the story along with mystery, friendship, suspense, family, and a touch of romance. The mystery was not the focus of the book in the beginning. It becomes more prominent as the tale progresses. There is a red herring, a couple of suspects, and helpful clues. Bait and Witch is a cute cozy mystery with a paranormal twist. The author came up with some fun paranormal elements. I thought a book witch was a wonderful concept (great opportunities for book references). I am looking forward to reading the next A Witch Way Librarian Mystery. Bait and Witch is a diverting tale with a clever cat, a secretive man named Sam, Roz’s curious project, rampant rumors, political corruption, babbling books, and witchy wonders.

I thought this was a solid start to a new cozy mystery series by author Angela M. Sanders. It is a paranormal mystery dealing with a young librarian and the discovery that she is a witch, all while on the run after overhearing some criminal activity while working at the Library of Congress. I enjoyed the characters in the series. The author did a good job of making Josie likable and getting the reader interested in following her discovery of her powers as a witch and learning a bit more about them. She is surrounded by an interesting cast of secondary characters including some of the local citizens and a mysterious FBI agent, who could be a future love interest for Josie.

For me, I thought the pace was a bit slow at the beginning and I had trouble figuring out how the author was going to tie in the murder to what was happening with Josie. There were not a lot of clues, at least in my opinion, that made determining the killer's identity easy. The sheriff had his sight set on a particular suspect and didn't waver until near the end of the book. I thought the mystery could have been a little bit tighter and when the killer's identity was revealed I was surprised because for me it didn't really make much sense. The motive and the reveal felt rushed and like I hadn't had enough woven into the story to completely buy into the identity of the killer.

The premise of this series is similar to another paranormal mystery series involving a magical bookshop and books that talk to the protagonist in a manner of speaking. That said, I think that I will check out the next in the series to see where the author takes the characters and what she has planned in terms of the mystery.

I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Kensington, through Netgalley. The thoughts and opinions are my own.

Bait and Witch is a fantastic addition to the cozy mystery genre. Josie Way is a delightful character, who is introduced to us as a librarian who is moving to a remote area in Oregon.
Taking over the local library is just what Josie needs to try and figure out some serious issues.
Bizarre things begin to take place as Josie is introduced to the staff and board of directors.
Josie begins to feel an odd connection with the books in the library, her ability to know exactly what the patron needs to read next.
As if her own issues aren’t causing her enough problems, she finds out she was hired under false pretenses, and may not even have a job to depend on.
I liked the feel of this story, and an immediate connection to Josie made it very easy to lose myself in this story. As I settled in to read this story, I soon became totally immersed in Josie’s life, as she has an important decision to make.
I would definitely recommend this book to paranormal cozy mystery fans as well as anyone who appreciates a well told story.
I’m looking forward to reading more in this series.

Josie is on the run from her position with the Library of Congress as she (and her coworker) are whistleblowers in a corruption scheme. She flies across the US to rural Oregon to go undercover while the case goes to court. She now has a chance to run a small town library. Once she arrives, she finds she has an uncanny ability to recommend the right book to the right reader….and might be picking up other information while in or near the library, as well.

I really enjoyed this cozy fantasy/mystery and the culprit did surprise me, a nice bonus. I’ve been gravitating to books about witches for almost the past year now and really enjoying them. I especially like it when a woman is unaware of her power and has to learn how to control it. At times there was some snarky humor in here that reminded me of Sue Grafton’s work. There is a terrific cat character in this one, too.

Audio and print versions were both excellent and I’ve already borrowed the next volume from the library. I’m currently doing an A to Z titles challenge and I’ve already read for that letter, but Josie’s world is intriguing and I want to see where she goes from here. Will be circling back to this series hopefully soon.

Books and magic?! Sign me up.  These are some of my favorite aspects in a cozy mystery, and this story did not disappoint.  I loved getting to know the small town of Wilfred, it's citizens, and the wonderful sounding library in an old mansion. If I had the option I would be there all the time.  This story had many mysterious aspects; not only is there a murder, but Josie is running away from her old home in DC, AND she is discovering magical powers! Though this story was light on the actual sleuthing, there was enough going on to keep me interested and guessing the whole time. Josie is a great character and I cannot wait to see more of her and I hope we see more magic she can do.

Librarian Josie Way loved working at the Library of Congress, it was her happy place. But then she overheard a conversation dealing with corruption and she now needs to get away.
Bait and Witch is the first book in the new Witch Way Librarian Cozy Mystery series.
This book has a small-town feel and I enjoyed getting to know the characters.
Newcomer Josie Way decides it's best to skeddadle out of there from her beloved job at the Library of Congress and starts over as a librarian at the Wilfred, Oregon library which is housed in a Victorian mansion which she is devastated to learn is set to be demolished.
Shocked to learn she is a descendant of witches her powers become stronger.
When things get dangerous she is able to use her newfound magical powers to save herself.
I love these cozy mysteries, so much fun to read.

This is the first book in a new series and is a cozy mystery.

A young librarian named Josie is the subject of a supernatural mystery that follows her as she flees after overhearing some criminal conduct while working at the Library of Congress and learns that she is a witch.

My immersion in Josie's world was sparked by this story. The writing was kind and inviting. I could clearly imagine the charming library, the town, and the residents of Wilford.

As the main character, Josie appeals to me. She is dealing with a lot in her life, and it seems like new things are always happening. The plot flows along well, and there is more than enough humor, detective work, tension, and engaging people to hold my interest.

Overall, it was a light, enjoyable read, however, if you're seeking for a more complex mystery, search elsewhere.

Because in my opinion, this book is best suited for readers who want light mysteries or those who desire a light mystery with a mystical, eerie, or magical touch.

I am into cosy fantasies lately, and this one brings libraryland, witchy-ways, and murder together in a small town in Oregon where the librarian is on the run from corrupt Washington politicians and the local library is housed in a Victorian mansion. There's also a fab black cat. And the books talk if the librarian lets them. Total fun.

Mood/Seasonal Reading: Fall 🍂

This was a cute cozy that helped give me some witchy vibes for the end of spooky season. I really enjoyed the unique magic system in this one. I am very excited to dive into it in further instalments. The main character was easy to like as well as the cute town she found herself in. The mystery itself started off okay but I found myself caring more about the library’s struggles than the murder which isn’t a great sign. Overall, I think this series has a lot of potential. It falls victim to some first book issues such as having to cram a lot of info in about the location and magic system as well as explain convincingly how a 25 year old woman doesn’t know she’s a witch. While it didn’t nail these things, I did think it did an overall good job.

I will absolutely pick up the next book in the series. I have this one brownie points for an interesting town plot line and a unique magic system I’m keen to read more about.

This is the first book in the Witch Way Librarian series. Josie Way is on the run after overhearing something she shouldn't have at her job at the Library of Congress. She takes the position as librarian in Wilfred, Oregon, where she is hiding out. Not long after she is there, she discovers a dead body.
I loved the magic in this book. Josie learns she is a witch and that her powers had been suppressed. They start coming back to her when she works at the library. I love cozies that have books and magic in them. The characters were great. I loved Josie and all of Wilfred's townspeople. This is definitely a series I will be looking forward to reading more from.

This was a good read but not great. Josie witnessed a crime and is now in hiding as a librarian in a small town. While there she runs across a dead body. The mystery goes back and forth between her efforts to save the library, solve the murder and keep herself hidden. In the meantime she discovers she had powers aka is a witch. Her powers being activated due to having fled so far from her home. The writing is fine, though at time I though Josie was just dumb, like chiding not to use her magic to save her life when literally she’s about to die 🙄🙄🙄

Okay, so there had to be a LOT of suspension of disbelief. Someone who goes on the lam for fear of government agents and yet becomes employed where I am sure they asked for things like SSN? Not too swift. In its favor, the books talk to her, reveal their locations, and are a dab hand at Reader's Advisory. Every librarian's dream. So it gets a good score. I did find it a lot of fun.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Working at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. was a dream come true for Josie Way until she overheard something that turned her into a whistleblower and put a target on her back. In fear for her life, she escaped to Wilfred, Oregon for a job as the small town’s lead librarian. She had hoped for a sleepy little town with no conflicts only to learn that the beautiful library’s fate may be dire. Someone is trying to buy it and tear it down to put up a retreat center. Worried about how long she will be able to stay in Wilfred without a job she comes up with a plan to try to thwart the sale. Then she finds a dead body in the woods behind the library and worries her fate may be dire as well.

As if that isn’t enough to scare the daylights over her, Josie finds she has a strange power regarding the books she has been entrusted to take care of. Unable to explain what is happening she calls her mother and learns she comes from a long line of witches. Her mother tells how she can curtail her witchy ways but soon after she does she realizes she may need those powers to save her life.

_____

I was a little nervous about reading this book because paranormal-themed stories are not always my cup of tea but the synopsis really made me want to know more about Josie Way and this Victorian mansion that had become a library. It was that unique library that drew me in. The author’s detailed description of the place brought the amazing building to life. Each room filled with books, the apartment Josie would inhabit, the paintings on the walls, and the amazing central atrium with its stained glass window set in the roof all felt magical to me before Josie realized she had powers.

I did enjoy the way Josie’s powers were introduced, a true gift for a librarian. The library also comes with a cat named Rodney who bonds with Josie right away. A witch and her familiar, a perfect pair. Josie is an intelligent and talented woman, comfortable in her knowledge, stepping into this new position in a new place. She is very likable and makes friends quickly with her coworker and library trustee/diner owner/pseudo mayor. We also meet several other residents of Wilfred, some thrilled by the demise of the library and others hoping the sale goes awry. We also meet a man whose family has a long history with the town and the local sheriff. The author does an excellent job introducing the characters and allowing them to evolve throughout the story while leaving them room to grow as the series continues.

I was totally entertained by the way the story played out with several secrets revealed and some nice twists and moments of suspense. I probably would have read the entire book in one sitting. I had to force myself to put the book down when the clock struck one and I needed to get to sleep.

Bait and Witch has gotten this series off to an extraordinary start. I wish the Wilfred Library was a real place. I would book my ticket for Oregon today. This paranormal story was a hit for me and I recommend it to everyone that loves a fun cozy mystery. I am really looking forward to Seven Year Witch coming out on August 24.

The little town of Wilfred, Oregon, is the perfect place to lay low for awhile, until you find a woman dead in the forest, that is. Josephine Way didn’t expect to arrive at her new job as head librarian only to find out that she might be out of this new job in a few weeks. The beautiful, old mansion full of books is about to be flattened to the ground and traded in for a retreat center. Well, unless Josie can find a way to save her new home.

Gosh, the things Josie can do with her magic are so awesome. I really like Angela M. Sanders’ take on magic. I love that Josie’s magic is tied to her beloved books. It would be so fun to just know, without even asking, what book someone needs to read. It’s like prescribing the medications without even needing a description of the issue, but getting it right every time. I’m really excited to learn what else Josie is capable of.

I liked all the characters in this book. Wilfred is a town with a lot of secrets and an interesting collection of residents. I like that Josie’s new cat, Rodney, actually has an important role in this story. He’s not one of those cats that are just on the cover to get people to read the book. He doesn’t really help solve the mystery itself but his role in the story is still important.

The mystery itself was pretty good. There were a lot of things going on, including trying to stop the library from being demolished, trying to figure out who killed the woman in the woods, Josie trying to stay hidden from her enemies, and trying to figure out her magic powers. I don't think it was too much at once though.

All in all, an exciting start to a new cozy mystery series.

I thought this was an Ok introduction to a new to me series

The Good, The Bad, and Everything Else: I really love a library setting and I enjoyed Josie's ability for pulling the right title up in her head for each person who comes to the library seeking a book. I also thought her not knowing she was a witch was interesting, but it does come with issues. She has no control. She has no idea what she can do. She completely does whatever her mom says blindly even though she is a full-on adult. The mystery of who was after Josie (or if anyone really was) was a bit of a stretch as the person died before Josie even got to town. Also, I think if the FBI was involved shouldn't they have put her in protective custody or something?

Anyway, I liked the Oregon setting and liked Sam (even if he was a little sketchy) but didn't warm up to many other people in town and why no one figured out who the murderer was is beyond me because it felt glaringly obvious.

Rebecca Mitchell's narration was decent. She doesn't do different voices but she's pleasant enough to spend several hours listening to. I was able to listen to the book at my typical 2X speed and her voice was ok for this. I wouldn't purposely seek out an audio book because she was narrating though.

In a Nutshell: I will continue with the series though and see where it takes me.

Josephine works at the Library of the Congress, a day during her lunch break she overhears a shady deal between two men so after she reported it to the authorities she decides to go on the run. She is lucky enough to get a job as librarian in an Oregon little town, but when she arrives she soon understands that her life won't be quiet as she expected, with books that speal to her and the discovery of a dead body near her new house.

I wanted to try something new and I decided to try to read some cozy mystries books, and what's better than start a new genre with reading the first book in a new series? I tell you, nothing.
I've really enjoyed Bait And Witch, it was such a nice read that kept my attention all through.
I loved the magic element and how our heroine discovers her magic powers slowly and gradually.

Angela M. Sanders depicted her characters really well, especially the towners that seem all friendly but every single one of them keeps a secret from the others.
The mystery is intriguing and very well developped, you won't solve it until the author wants you to.

I wish I can read soon Josie's next adventure.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The "cozy" aspects were top notch for imagining a wonderful setting. Library in an old Victorian house, with a conservatory and gardens; small town diner; book-aligned magic, a kitty familiar. I liked that the reason for Josie ending up in Wilfred was a bit different than usual (not a breakup or inheritance), and the murder victim was a stranger to the characters we know instead of being someone half the town already hates.

The overall plot was more about saving the library than the murder mystery, but that was ok with me as I became engaged in it (even though the ending of that storyline was predictable; it is a series after all).

One of my issues with cozies is that characters are often disproportionately white and straight. Characters here are not explicitly described as particularly diverse, but most descriptions are vague enough that you can imagine the characters how you want. I imagine Darla as black for instance, her skin color is never decsribed, just that she has "big hair."

I plan to continue with this series for sure.

The cover is the cutest damn thing I have seen. I love black cats so I had to read this book.
Josie and her coworker Anton overheard a conversation between a corrupt senator and his hitchmen and both become whistleblowers so the truth can be known. When Anton goes missing Josie knows she needs to get away fast and tell no one. She accepts a job as a librarian in Wilfred Oregon. The library is a Victorian mansion and come to find out is set to be turned into a retreat type Inn. As she is walking around the grounds she finds a dead body which means they may have found her. Omg!!! I loved this book. The town has the cozy vibes I love, the characters are quirky but, so charming and the atmosphere made everything so captivating. I felt like a silent character watching everything unfold. I am so glad I found this book. Can't wait to read the next one.

I loved that Josie could commune with books and had a supernatural ability for reader's advisory. As a public librarian, the plot about the librarian trying to save the town's library from becoming bulldozed hit close to home. I wanted to know more about Josie's witchy abilities and less about the town's plans to destroy the library. Sadly, I was not invested in the plot or the characters. I am not planning to continue reading this series.

A cute cozy paranormal mystery set in a small town in Oregon. The characters were interesting and Josie definitely had her hands full with hiding out from Washington DC bad guys, trying to save the Wilfred library from destruction and learning how to control her new magic powers. A fun read.
