The hearse with the weird odor slowed to a stop before the entrance. The sound of pebbles could be heard bouncing on the ceiling. There were footsteps coming from the corridor, and there seemed to be someone sawing next door. The door knob to the room rattled slightly, and the faucet in the bathroom kept dripping even though it had been screwed shut. There was a rubber ball that rolled on its own underneath the bed. Wet footsteps started to surface one after another on the floor. At 3 am, Chen Ge held a cleaver in his hand as he hid beside the room heater. The call he was trying to make was finally answered. “Landlord, is this what you meant by ‘the house can be a little crowded at night’‽”
4 stars in general, 5 star translated novel. The main character doesn’t have much depth of personality but this is generally okay since he is usually an observer in the story. He rarely encounters danger on his own, and when he does he makes countless back up plans after carefully analyzing the situation. It’s enjoyable to watch as he sets everything up and his enemies/customers faint in terror.
- Incomplete Ch. 768
1.5-4 stars in general, 2-5 star translated novel. This novel becomes much less enjoyable starting at the School of the Afterlife arc. Everything becomes elongated and tedious to read and the author can be repetitive. Loose ends and minor inconsistencies also start piling up alongside tangents and long separations between important plot points. When this novel is good it's still really good, but the novel as a whole no longer meets the same high standard.
It was such a loooooonnggg novel and I enjoyed every second of it!
I've read some asian horror novels here and there. But this one can be considered my first one that delved into so much horror and gore with great plotline and comedic elements.
Chen Ge, the main character, inherited his parents' haunted house in a theme park that is running in losses. He left his job for this as it was the last memory of his parents who disappeared mysteriously halfway a year ago.
One day, he finds a black phone and the doll that he himself made during his childhood. The black phone started giving him missions to improve his haunted house and our main character takes it all in strides, no matter how dangerous these missions become over time.
There were also mystery elements that kept me on my toes at all times.
The underlying comedy gives a much needed relief in between the stressful action-packed arcs. I enjoyed every second of this.
The law enforcement of Jiujiang are really unlucky though. They should shutdown their hotlines and should just wait for Chen Ge's call🤣🤣🤣
I also loved the fact that the main character saw livestreaming as means to an end and it didn't take away attention from the storyline or the horror.
Chen Ge in his journey befriends many living and non-living entities. Some become his friend but most become his employee and his family.
This man is a walking magnet of specters and all things supernatural. Even his love interest...🤭🤭🤭
The romantic elements may not be much but the romance was romancing for sure. It was soooo sweet!
Xu Yin deserves a separate shoutout. He finally found his heart after being betrayed like that!
White Tiger is still that cheeky🤣🤣🤣
Thank God, Ol' Zhou and Duan Yue got together even in the afterlife.
Ol' Bai also found his place in the world.
Yan Danian was such a shy uncle that it was exasperating some times.
Men Nan is a tsundere through and through.
There is also Xiao Bu who finally got someone who would look out for her.
Even the Red High Heels was a phenomenal character.
I hope Fan Yu and Ying Tong will find happiness in their new family. Chen Ge will make sure of it!
Chen Ge's Doctor Skull Cracker's hammer deserve a mention separately. It also made me want to have one!
A great novel that makes me want to give more than five ⭐s only if I could. I absolutely loved it!
2.07 MILLION WORDS or 6892 pages on my Nook e-reader.
SUMMARY: Chen Ge owns a haunted house at an amusement park after his parents mysterious disappeared six months ago. They left him nothing except a rag doll and a black phone. Then one day the black phone vibrates and gives him the option to accept missions. Some of these missions are mundane things to improve the quality of his haunted house, like to install more security cameras. But other missions warn him that they are dangerous and will interact with REAL ghosts.
There may be things living in his room, in his mirror, behind the door of his bathroom. The bigger the danger, the bigger the reward. And then there's the biggest reward of all . . . because maybe, just maybe, by taking on these dangerous missions, Chen Ge might unravel the mystery behind his parents' disappearance.
The story is a times funny, creepy, and action-packed. The author does a good job of having a set up where he can have arcs of various levels and scenarios that follow a pattern but allow for variation, and the power build is slow.
QUALITY (and quality over the duration) The best part of the book is probably the fact that the way in which some of the scenarios unravel is genuinely creepy in the best way.
For the most part, the quality stayed true. I will warn others that the arc was bloated, and I considered stopping or skimming. But I decided to keep going, and the quality picked back up again after that. It's hard to say about the big climax; the translation I was reading at that point was somewhat worse than before -- but in general, the author seemed rather tired by that point, and had somewhat more repetitions. STILL, it was worth finishing. I definitely didn't waste the 3-1/2 weeks I spent binge reading this. I might even read it again in another twenty years.
The ending was average, the overall story ended on a note that there is much more to know about the world. I didn't like that aspect much but the intense situations the mc is put through from the start to finish are great. I was trembling sometimes in the cat killer apartment arc, it was done wonderfully.
The overall scare factor is 3/5. There is some gore, so maybe not for 18-. Gore 3/5 Romance is minimal, tragic, and was done well. 5/5 There were very few plotholes and stupid mistakes made by the MC.

One of the best online horrors I've read. It's actually scary to the point that I wouldn't read it late at night. The MC is kind of boring (he's just observing, honestly), but the story is good so far. The translation is meh for me. But I love the scary factor. It's that funny feeling of unease.
I could never adequately express the range of emotions I felt while reading this novel. Whether it was thrill, fear, happiness, or any other feeling you can think of!
After diving into "Kaleidoscope of Death," I never imagined I'd pick up another horror novel, knowing my fear threshold is quite low. If Chen Ge could survive extremely challenging four-star scenarios, I'd probably lose my mind in a one-star scenario. I even recall having sleepless nights simply from imagining the characters.
What I truly appreciate about this novel is how much I learned from it. It made me question my own principles at times. The characters—Chen Ge, our protagonist; Doctor Gao, our psychologist; Zuo Han, our future forensic doctor—are all incredibly intelligent, from their logical reasoning to their darker thoughts. The plot had a captivating way of maintaining my interest, despite the lengthy journey, with its mysterious vibes. Furthermore, the story shed light on the darkness within humanity, exploring themes like murder, dismemberment, child trafficking, and bullying—all driven by selfish desires yet ultimately striving for justice. It consistently emphasized the importance of kindness and goodness, showing that light can exist even in the darkest places. The novel also underscored the significance of law enforcement cooperation, which I appreciated.
Do I regret reading this novel? No. Chen Ge represents hope, always finding a way even in the bleakest situations, and believing in the goodness of others. That alone speaks volumes, and I'll never regret reading this novel. My only regret is not being able to highlight all the impactful messages it conveyed.
Nevertheless, here are the ones I was able to highlight from this journey.
"After looking at a particular Chinese character repeatedly, one would end up forgetting how to write it when asked."
"The best way to counter fear is to find a more intense stimulation—fight poison with poison, so to speak—to desensitize yourself to the fear."
"A person’s trash can often reflect their lifestyle and attitude."
"We often forget the things that we have, so only in the deepest despair can we be reminded of what is the most important in our lives."
"Deceit is the most beautiful, but truths are often the ugliest." “In my daily life, people often make fun of me for being so stupid to forgive my enemy and opponent. Why wouldn’t I believe in the darker side of reality and insist on seeing the good in people and in my heart? Perhaps I’m that type of idiot.”
“You can stand there and question the fairness because you are not taking the perspective of the victims. You can not see the wounds in their hearts, so you can not understand the despair that they have faced. You can not understand the pain that caused them to suffocate, the pain that makes them want to tear themselves open.”
“Even with such an amount of pain, they tried their best to live, to be alive. However, ignoring the pain is not going to give them salvation; if anything, it is only going to heighten the pain."
“Those who have not witnessed death will never understand their pain. So, who gave them the right to point their fingers at us? Who allowed them to have the moral high ground?”
"What one wished would not happen would always happen."
“Not all fish stay in the same ocean, so why push for things against nature?”
“When a person tries to mix in with the rest, he will only make his life that much more tiring. To give up on one’s hobbies and habits just to pander to others is truly a sad life.” “Be your best self. When you bloom, the butterfly will come.”
"Kindness is easily mistaken as weakness. No one dares speak. No one dares stand up, so those bastards trample over everyone.”
"With numbers came power."
“If I am really forgotten in my nightmare one day, I will paint a window on that black sea and open all the doors in the red city so that all the eyes that have gotten used to the darkness will get the chance to see the light.”
“With light comes darkness. If you wish for darkness to see the light, the light will turn into darkness.”
“Love will never stop from the moment it flares up until death. It will only end when one party chooses to leave.”
"If there was no secret to be found, a secret could be planted."
"A real general would never fight an unprepared war,"
"Pick yourself up when you fell down."
“Failure to plan is planning to fail, but sometimes, luck plays a huge part of it as well."
"Rome was not built in a day; trust was the same."
"When there is despair, there is also hope. The two can not exist without the other.”
"For those in despair, even though they were surrounded by bliss, they would not escape the torment of despair. And for those with hope, even if they had lost everything, they would be able to see a colourful world inside a simple soap bubble."
Probably the best pure horror novel I've ever read!
It's engaging and has a lot of different small horror plots which interconnect together in the form of the House of Horrors in an Amusement Park left behind by the hero's parents as the hero tries to find out what happened to them.
Each individual horror story which opens up more of the secret is more and more scary (although the scariest are the ones that resemble reality most - I almost died of fright when I read the part of taking a bath in the middle of the night or summoning otherworldly beings in the middle of the night whilst looking into a mirror).
I wouldn't say that there's much of character development in terms of MC or supporting characters but the action filled plot as well as the intervals where the guests of the Amusement Park try out new activities more than make up for it.
In all honesty though, after 300+ chapters it does get tedious. But I definitely recommend even for those who don't usually read horror.
this novel fills me with a feeling of dread and a fear for death…it’s great!
the setting is vivid, disgustingly gory and dark. i don’t think horror webnovels are actually scary, but the vibes are so immersive.
Chen Ge is pretty obviously mentally ill, but that makes his relationship to all his ghosties even better. it’s kinda the “found family,” both Chen Ge and the ghosts finding a home with each other. i love how wholesome it is.
main flaws are the pretty predictable structure (the entire novel follows the same plot structure), repetitiveness & the humans. they somehow feel more inhuman than the ghosts?
i hated the School of the Afterlife arc, 100+ chapters of the same setting. i don’t think the conclusion made up for it either. really frustrating to read.
this webnovel’s an iconic one. everyone should give it a read

This is one of my favorite horror webnovels of all time-- despite the title, the stakes are high from the very start (sure, it's just a haunted house, but the ghosts and the missing parents are real). Chen Ge has a unique outlook on life, but he'd not overpowered and his reasons for being different are appropriately exposed as the story continues. The author's extremely talented, especially when it comes to villain motivations and worldbuilding without lore dumps, and I am eager to read more from them.
The horror elements were superb, and i can't wait to forget most about the story so i can read it again. The dark atmosphere and storytelling hit all the right spots to give me some goosebumps, even when it's way too warm outside. The occasional sprinkle of humour just added more flavour. There's also some romance later on, but it doesn't dominate the story. Neither the MC nor his love interest have much personality, but funnily enough, it didn't diminish the story for me at all.
To clarify, this is a COMEDY horror - the theme is to laugh through the horror. Some creepy elements, but I wouldn't read this for scare factor. That said, I had a lot of fun with it and the ending was satisfying. Try the first few chapters and you'll know what it's all about.
(4 stars only because there was a section in the chapter 800s that was slow. It's not really fair to rate the whole series as one book because the start and end were 5stars..)
I think the beginning of the book was great up till the school of after life arc is where things started to get dragged out. I would say the ending had a pretty cool idea going but the execution was just “ok”. Additionally, some minor plot holes started to show up towards the end which was kind of sad because each one had huge potential, like the comic ghost….what happened to him I was so hype :(!!! In conclusion, I loved the story despite all that and I would like to kiss Chen Ge, Xue Yin, and a Zhang ya especially! All three are my favorite characters, although I could only really like Zhang ya towards the end of the book where she mellowed out. I definitely recommend this book for the journey and hype and less of the ending, either way it’s a great read teehee!

It also potrayed Hospitals in a Scary way....Well thats all from me...
This is a very well thought out novel. Beautifully translated and scary enough to make me not look in the mirror and sleep with my room door open. As someone who can't stand to watch horrors, reading about it is even worse.
But how can I resist such a beautiful novel even if it does leave me scared. So why would I put myself through the toucher of reading this book, well obviously because it's fantastic and it has an undertone of humor which often lightens the mood.
It's worth the read even if u like me and don't lile horrors, still don't like them but deffinetly love this little work of art.
if you’re a fan of the horror/thriller/mystery genre, this is definitely a story for you
the story flows nicely, and every detail is a fascinating detail to the equation of the story. there are humorous moments, moments where you tear up, and definitely moments where you’re at the edge of your seat, and your heart pounds, in either anticipation, terror, or both.
note that it is a rather long novel (though i would honestly have liked it to continue on), but well worth the read imo:)
Stopped at chapter 712. Quite good story and world building but a bit too long and kinda lost interest along the way... might resume someday(?), not sure.
If you're a fan of horror stories, this one is for you. Just a reminder that it is quite a long novel.
