Family Ties: Thicker than Blood

Rate this book
Post 9/11 life in rural Georgia proves anything but easy for Willie LeBeaux when childhood obstacles of physical and mental abuse served as the catalyst for his change. The yet unresolved issues continue to present emotional and psychological barriers that he; even as a young adult, simply can't escape. His effort to distance himself from demons of the past drives him to the city that never sleeps. There, he hopes to find a hiding place amidst the faceless inhabitants of New York City. The ebb and flow of living life in the gray areas between his chosen career as an aspiring actor and one of organized crime that inadvertently chooses him are further complicated by Willie's untimely encounter with NYPD Officer Ernestina Lady. The feelings he develops for her could take him to a place he shouldn’t go as his secret lifestyle contradicts everything she represents. Willie struggles to find a balance among relationships with his surrogate parents, the commitment to a crime family patriarch, and a desire to bridge the growing divide between him and his biological father. A path of deceit, secrecy, and scandal spins an intricate web of lies that ultimately put Willie in opposition to everything in his life that holds value ... including himself.

Dedications and acknowledgments in books are always important, and many of them simple and cute, but there are ones that mark us with the wit behind the beauty of all of it, and B. G. Howard offers us this epic line:

“…. but the extension of gratitude remains for those who believe and support me as well as those who don’t. Above all else, I thank the Creator for creating me to create.”

The narrative is inviting in the first words of the story, capturing our attention and soothing our expectations that this book will be a pleasant read.

Right in the fifth sentence, we start to see the dynamics of the writer, as he can go from 0-100 in a flash, and Oz can be a few seconds faster than that, hahahahaha.

The slang, the street smarts, and the whole gangster attitude are impressive, very impressive indeed, and the way the characters act feels like they were born in the streets. And the accents were spot on! OMG! You can almost hear them.

“…Dey don’t know who da hell dey’s dealin wit. I goes down ta dat city hall ‘n gives dem somebitches a piece o’ my mind…,” Sam began. “That’s why you ain’t got shit left for a brain now…a’ways givin someb’dy piece o’ it,” Eunice said. “

There is humor in the fact that our main character wants nothing to do with being the boss of a crime organization in the future, and just wants to get by, and that is, apparently, the exact reason why OZ chose him, lol! This is genial! Nice!! I love the fact that B. G. Howard took time to fill this book with unpredictable humor scenes in the middle of all the action, sex and cursing.

Have you ever imagined a righteous, clean-mouthed, hardcore gangster? We didn’t either, until reading this book, and it’s great! Not in the way one would imagine it, which is why we love it.

The secrets William lives and the fact that he can’t share it with his “parents”, as they grow closer is emotional, as they are a lovely, loud and crazy couple that have nothing but love for each other. It’s crazy really, but it’s one of the reasons this book is gripping. The expectations of it all.

The heaviness of the streets, the harshness, the power and the rage of Oz, and the different perceptions of the same playing fields are shown so well, that one must straighten oneself to digest this book in all of its might.

The harsh reality of police brutality in the USA when it comes to Black People…. It hits yah. The stealing of people’s possession, and all the unfortunately relatable encounters and happenings that make the living hell of Black Americans is… Crushing.

Uhhhhh the prohibited romance between crime people… talk about danger! There is real sensuality and the hinting pull of mystery on it makes it PERFECT! OH YES!!!! A bullet for a kiss, hahahahahahaha!

There is so much street wisdom in here that you want to read this book over and over again and take notes on the pages and the quotes in here.

” “Even still, he’s walking a little closer to the edge than he thinks. It’s a lot harder to get back to the bank once you’ve jumped off that bridge,” I confessed. “Most of the time, current’s a lot stronger than it looks when standing up looking down.” “

Like, damn!

And the “lowercase gee” trying to play gangster against someone a lot deeper in the game than he looks.

The main character is so cool! Not the hero type of cool, which is great because there is no cliché in it, but the non-challans are kind of cool, and very wise indeed. He knows how to lie, talk about what is needed and not reveal much, and above else, keep his composure. Not only that, but he understands people with an almost super ability! Wow!

LOVE THIS BOOK, not only for the strong stance, especially on racism but also because there is a total fluidity of story in the whole book! It’s engaging, it feels real, the atmosphere is pressurized in so many aspects it doesn’t let go of the pins of anxiety that dig under the reader’s skin! There are so many uncontrollable plots and action courses that the main character is forced to handle, or forget to control, that he (and it) feels… flawed and real! THIS BOOK IS AWESOME!!!!!!!! LOOOOOOOOVE IT! Extremely relatable for the reader, especially Black readers. THIS IS AWESOME!!!!! Love it!

There is realness to every word of this book! DAMN! Excellent!

The author takes so much care into the realness of the characters, the depth of their roles that when Oz tries to say something complex, he errs, TWICE, and then proceeds to use slang!! OHHHH MY GOHHHHHHHD! YOH! This is some serious writing right here! THIS IS COMMITMENT!! OH, GOD! YES! And the Drama! Oh… man. This one is full of close calls, too close for comfort if you ask me, and that’s what makes this thriller great!

Family Ties: Thicker Than Blood is a wild ride in da streets! LOVE IT!

Let’s take some time to talk about the amazing job B. G. Howard made here with the romantic aspect of this novel. This is some serious work in here and minute detail was put when carving all the little aspects of personality that were shown, not only on Williams’s side but on Tammy, Natasha, Ernestina, and Terri’s daughter, Sharon (not to mention Pops and his Queen). The body cues, the reactions, the way they communicated, miscommunicated, the knee-jerk reactions, the arguing, and all the emotional aspects that you don’t expect to see, laid out here as if it was a photocopy of real life. INCREDIBLE!!!!

Our final word when it comes to this book is: “WE WANT A SERIES NOW!!!!!!!!” Ahaahaahha

Favorite Character: They were so good, it’s hard to decide which. Love them! hahahahaha!
Lesson of the book: “….man ain’t a man if he walkin”
Pros:
EXCELLENT narrative
EXCELLENT details on the character’s personalities and traits, one of the best works in that aspect we have seen
EXCELLENT social commentary and displayed scenes of police brutality to the point it shocks the reader
EXCELLENT points on racism, morals, sex, feminism, rights and honor
EXCELLENT accent/vernacular display!
Characters that feel real, deep, and solid to the point of making shadows
Good sex scenes, although they could be more descriptive… hahahahaha!
Relatable problems, all the way, in the book
Great storyline and plot
The way the writer makes the reader understand and relate to the problems and feelings of the characters, well, that’s impressive!

Cons:
Did the author spoil the plot, a little, by telling it in the beginning?

Cover Score: 8.8/10
Book Score: 9.3/10

This book introduces readers to Willie LeBeaux, a character whose journey from South Georgia to the bustling streets of New York City serves as a poignant backdrop for a tale of survival, identity, and the complexities of familial bonds. The novel opens with Willie reflecting on his past, revealing a deep sense of disillusionment as he grapples with the harsh realities of life in a city that promises dreams but often delivers despair.

The author skillfully captures the essence of Willie's character through his introspective musings and the weight of his father's words that linger in his mind. The phrase "Ya ain't worth a damn now, and ya ain't nev'r gone be worth a damn" resonates throughout the novel, serving as a haunting reminder of the expectations and limitations imposed by family and society.

As Willie attempts to carve out a new life for himself, he encounters a cast of characters that embody the diverse and often harsh realities of urban life. From fellow dreamers to hardened streetwise individuals, each character adds layers to the story, reflecting the myriad ways people cope with their circumstances.

The author's ability to create relatable and multifaceted characters enhances the reader's investment in Willie's journey, as they witness his interactions and the impact of his choices on those around him. The relationships Willie forms, both positive and negative, serve to highlight the importance of connection and the often complicated nature of family ties.

The pacing of the novel is well-executed, with Howard balancing moments of tension and introspection. The writing style is both evocative and accessible, making the novel a compelling read for a wide audience. The author's keen observations about life, ambition, and the weight of expectations resonate deeply, inviting readers to reflect on their own experiences and the ties that bind them to their families.

With its rich character development, poignant themes, and engaging prose, this novel is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring impact of family ties, making it a must-read for anyone seeking a story that resonates on multiple levels.

Just when I think I am out, they pull me back in – Michael Corleone from The GodFather by Mario Puzo

For Willie LeBaux, Oz is his family now; a chance encounter in which he saved the entrepreneur’s life sealed that fate for him. When the word entrepreneur is used, it can also, and in this case, does indicate one who operates his business from the underbelly of New York City. Willie quickly replaced Jerome to be Oz’s watchdog, but that is not how he pictured his life to turn out after ending up in New York all the way from South Georgia to catch a big break. He is struggling to make it into the acting industry; generally, his skin colour becomes a barrier. Despite how life turned out for him, Willie values loyalty and we can see that in the way his relation dynamics with Oz works.

There are intra gang rivalries, power politics, and lots of gunplay for readers who like that kind of thing. This book guarantees a lot of action, both in Willie’s professional and personal lives; one incident ends and the other begins. Coming to his personal life, there is no shortage of trouble there as well. Adding to the twist of fate, Willie falls head over heels for a woman police officer – Ernestina Lady; he knows nothing good can come out of it but there is no controlling what one’s heart wants.

What is very likeable about the characters is that everyone speaks their mind. Sam and Eunice are Willie’s parents in this new city and his love for them shows through every time there is a scene involving those three. It also provides some comedic respite from the heavy hand that our main character has been dealt with. The language is lucid; however, there are several passages that are written in a southern accent. Nevertheless, one gets used to them as the story unfolds.

William is a smooth talker and this helps him get out of sticky situations. Will it be enough to finally confront his heart’s desires and solve the issues that are piling up within his professional family?

•Some decisions in our life are not in our hands, such as which family we will bear. What will the location be? What kind of community will we grow up in? Even though life is a game of choices, the questions raised above are not covered in the curriculum. We grasp this issue when we grow up and recognize that there are better methods or things in the world than what we have been given. Let's start by reading B.G. HOWARD's FAMILY TIES THICKER THAN BLOOD. The cover page is quite realistic to the content.

•The plot centers around the events in the life of Willie LeBeaux, a young adult from rural Georgia. He was a victim of mental and physical violence as a youngster, so he never imagined life would be simple. He chose to come to New York to alter his life and forget about his difficult childhood. He desired to live as a nameless individual among the city's multitude. But things soon changed for him at that location as well. He met NYPD officer Ernestina and developed an affection for her, but his hidden lifestyle prevented him from going after her.

He was trapped in life's loops; will he ever be able to find a way out? Where will he end up if he continues along this path of secrecy, deception, and scandal? Read until you get all of your answers.

•The author has defined the situations effectively, they all are related to the next level. We can all sense emotions, and the emptiness of Willie, as well as the manner he got into this whirlwind, will compel readers to keep reading. The title effectively builds the link between the title and the content.

Really interesting and enjoyable book. Firstly, the characters have a plentiful background and it's written in really great details. It made me feel like I was stanting beside the character. The background is well researched and the plot is set accordingly. As soon as I started I couldn't put the book done. The action and suspense had me glued me to my seat. Everything was written amazingly. Great job to the author. Definitely go check this book out and support  the author's work.

Family Ties, is a story following the everyday life of a gangster, Willie, who moves to New York from Georgia to start his life anew, hoping to find success in the entertainment industry. But finds himself swallowed up in the crime world working for Oz, a kingpin criminal.
Even though he is earning a living doing odd jobs for the old man, he is not happy and desires to get out of that world.
Ironically, as the pages keep turning, the more he wants to get out, the more crime he gets into and the deeper he sinks into this world.

It gives one a peek into the underground world of crime. It is action-packed, suspense-filled, filled with spine-chilling moments, nail-biting scenes, scary places, cold-hearted people. Sure to keep the reader glued to the story from start to finish.

The writer is a great story-teller. Tells it in a descriptive, detailed manner. He pulls the reader into the story and keeps them there. Also leaves one in suspense. Had me wanting to keep reading the sequel — just to know how the story ends. I certainly look forward to reading the next part.

Readers looking for thrills, shock, crime stories, suspense, drama... will certainly feel at home with this book. It is mesmerising.

Stablizing and Continuing with your daily adulthood life, carrer and the routine is actually very tough when an individual has had a tremendous troubled past as the long lost past traumas has still has that affect in the minds of the person that adhere them to have a peace.
Something similar happened with the protagonist of this book as Willie had a troubled childhood where his mind was both emotionally and psychologically retarded and barriered which created numerous obstacles for him to even come out from that respective situation.
In the hope to start a new life he moved to New York where a new journey and experiences awaited him that has the power to shape his life in a fresh way.

It the first time that I have came across a family oriented book in this genre which indeed fits better than anything else and in addition to that I extremely loved the message that the book wanted to convey that you don't need only relations to have or create a family which created a overwhelming experience to read.
In the conclusion, it's nothing less than a power-packed thrilling and nail biting read with a tinge of sweetness to it.

I love this book since it's about someone (Willie) who treasures his relationship with his closest one as if he is a real family (Oz). Sometimes a home doesn't feel like home, and I think that is what Willie feels about his real family, especially about his dad. Willie came to New York and met Oz. Then he got involved in Oz business but didn't want to get involved in the 'dirty' one. But everyone mistakes him as the right-hand Oz that takes care of the whole business. Then Willie met Ernestina, a beautiful police officer, and became a lover. An unexpected accident happened, and Willie got the blame for Oz's death. Ernestina discovered that Will worked under Oz and feel betrayed. When everything messed up, Will decided to come back to his hometown and rest his mind for a while. But in the end, his family also misunderstood him as the suspect in that accident. That is why he feels no one will believe him no matter how hard he tries to explain.
I kind of understand how Willie feels about Oz when a mere stranger becomes someone close to us and thinks of them as our own family. Overall, this book is good even though I got some difficulties understanding most of the conversation.

Willie LeBeaux did not expect how his life will be when he moved to New York or the Big Apple like tourists call it.

He came from a small town in Georgia, trying to forget his troubled past, become an actor and have a decent life.

His path came a cross OZ, s mobster who become his mentor and boss. He was careful to not get involve in any illegal business but that did not save his from the trouble that awaits him.
He came across a family in Harlem who treated him like their own son, and thing was looking good.
Then came Ms Lady to give him a ticket, but stole his heart instantly.

Everything fall apart when OZ was killed and Willie became in danger from his gang members and the police.

The ups and turns in Willie's life kept me interested in what will happen next. His character is so unusual, sometime funny and sarcastic others dangerous and fierce.

Also it was unusual the many female characters in his life eager to be with him but his heart was reserved for the one woman he cannot be with.

The Slang language was new to me and it was some what hard to understand

I am looking forward for the second edition of this book how Willie will overcome his troubles and I wish the Writer Good Luck

Masala Thriller!

Family is all time favorite masala theme. Author B.G. Howard portrayal of family, society, career, past things plus some significant scenes  are simply amazing. The story spins around Willie Lebeaux, a young fellow from the south who winds up in Newyork. He had an upset youth, he confronted a great deal of physical and mental maltreatment which colossally affect willie's life. He chose to get himself far from all who hurted him and expected to find where he could conceal himself.
It's an incredible book loaded with wrongdoing, love, family, show, bends and undertakings. Jargon is straightforward and portrayal of the storyline is great. Generally, it was an outright exhilarating perused for me.

Everyone should read it and inheret that family is the thing through which we should live for, for better society. I loved the way Howards conveyed the message on family and force of mending. It likewise contains all components, wrongdoings, secret, love, family show and experience. Its a phenomenal perused and the person depiction is great.

Much thanks to you booktasters for sharing and welldone to the B.G Howard.

B. G. Howard's novel Family Ties: Thicker Than Blood belongs to the genre of literature. The plot revolves around love, romance, and crime.

Willie, the primary character, is a young man from the South who ends up in New York.
His life has not been easy; he has experienced trauma and abuse.

Later, Willie tries to strike a balance between his surrogate parents' ties, his dedication to a criminal family patriarch, and his desire to heal the growing chasm between him and his biological father.

Willie's premature come upon with NYPD Officer Ernestina Lady. The emotions he develops for her may want to take him to an area he should not move to as his mysterious way of life contradicts the whole lot.

The author has written this book in a very basic and straightforward manner for the reader to understand every detail of the story. It's a fantastic fiction book full of crime, family drama, love, affairs, and adventures. There is no lag between the plots, which I found to be quite interesting. Narrative strength, language, and character portrayal are all excellent.

I love books, even better i love reading...you always learn something new. GOD bless all writers 🙏 now let's start 😆....

The first lesson I learnt from this book is; life is sometimes tough and growing up sucks. You get so overwhelmed with career, daily routines, bills and adulthood as a whole especially if you have a painful past. Carrying the bundle of a tremendous troubled past and long lost traumas can have a lasting effect on one's mental health and state of mind.

I deeply emphasise with Willie all the way, to even have the courage and desire to heal and start a new life is commendable. I didn't know I would enjoy this book as much as I did, I love the message it conveyed about family and power of healing. It also contains all elements, crimes, mystery, love, family drama and adventure.

Its a fantastic read and the character portrayal is superb.

Thank you booktasters for sharing and welldone to the B.G Howard, Tina Marie Morlock and everyone involved in this amazing 📖 🙏❤

Thank you Booktasters for giving me the opportunity to read this book. I liked the book.

I was excited to read a book of action and suspense, to be able to read and have my heart pumping and sitting on the edge of my seat. I did not. I kept waiting for it to happen.

The author was able to develop the main character well. I felt Willie’s disengagement with people. As well as the other characters. Officer Lady compassion shone through.

I wanted to read to see what was going to happen. It kept my attention well.
I would have liked to see more in regards of the mafia. Maybe more of the story around Amp, Oz and Willie relationship. I realize there was animosity between Amp and Willie, but just seemed to fizzle out.
What happened to Amp?

There was lots of communication. Sometimes books do not have enough. It was hard to follow at times though. I was skimming through some of it.

I do think there is lots of potential for this author. There was a lot compacted in the novel.

I did like the book and wanted to read it.
Thanks again booktaster

Stunning and it is a must read in various aspects
When i came to read this book it got hooked me since my sight was beholden by it explicit and detailed prologue.
As you let go yourself through further reading, you clearly realize what the author is conveying you. Another important point to highlight, is the way of describing family role, due to the fact that he bestow it from a critical and thinkable perceptive view. This leads to the reader to question it self about what conception he or she has about family. Counting Also when it refers to freedom and Independence, brings out intellectual conscience in which we can make judgment with respect to if what it impacts our family member is being harmless to us or not. Among others observable traits that perfectly can be taken as tools for the individual emancipation. Including the appraisal in fostering or disapproval.
Final verdict
if you are keen on this sociological depth subject you should not miss reading it. just make sure to read it cautiously and patiently.

There is just something very intriguing that make the people love reading and watching organized crime.

Something about the aggressive business approach of the Mafia or the way they carry out tasks is a treat to experience.

In the book, Family Ties: Thicker Than Blood, we see the similar scenarios and get to experience the life of our main protagonist, Willie.

After experiencing a traumatic childhood, Willie finally seems to have found his place in this world when he moves to a new city, however what awaits for him is something that he would not have anticipated.

This was such an engrossing read and the fact that author was able to orchestrate the workings of mafia in such an orderly fashion, despite being on the wrong side of the law was a treat to read.

If you’re into organized crime stories like The Godfather by Mario Puzo as much as I am, then this book is absolutely something that you should check out.

Family Ties takes the reader on an interesting journey through the many lives of Willie as he navigates the environments that he has chosen and the ones that have chosen him. On the surface, the characters are abrasive and aggressive, their insecurities and fears on almost constant display. But as you engage with them, through the rough lives and rough language, relatable metaphors emerge for the near constant conflict of balancing life between what we want and what is demanded of us. The characters aren’t always likeable, but it’s not hard to imagine similar interactions with similar people taking place in that time and in those places. Ideal for a holiday or beach read where you can put it down and return to it at leisure.

Family Ties is a story of Willie confronted with a great deal of physical and mental pain from his early years moves from Georgia to NewYork to start a new life. Willie becomes friends with OZ and finds himself swallowed up in the crime world as much as he did not want to and so much wanted to get away. Things get complicated when he meets Ernestina a police officer who he falls in love with and everything crumbles when she discovers his real job.
I must say the author is such a great story teller he has you glued to the book with the detail, suspense, drama as well as the plot.
However I faced a big challenge with the language. It was abit difficult to follow the conversation in the book.
I recommend this book for anyone whose friends feel more of family than their real family.

I can honestly say I’ve never read a book like this before. The storyline was unique but seemed to be driven by the main character sleeping around rather than the plot. The plot almost seemed to take a back burner. I would have much rather heard about the storyline than the main character getting distracted by seeing a pretty woman and then sleeping with her. It seemed for every chapter of something plot relevant there was at least 2 or 3 more chapters with irrelevant material. The characters were entertaining and did keep me reading.

Loved this book. I always liked ' godfather' kind of setting.
For Willi he came here for the big break.
He saves oz and sucked into the underworld.
Gang wars, guns coming blazing , action and power politics what's more you need.
I keep turning to see what's next.

Characters talking about their mindset was great actually..

Looking forward to read more by this author.
Yes. A sequel is coming.. Story is not finished.

I really liked the book. It was hard to understand at first but the I got used to it. The way that the author tells the story is super beautiful and well-written. There’s suspense, drama, action, everything.
The story between him and the Harlem’s is so gorgeous.
I could really feel what he was going through when Oz died and everything went downhill.
Willie’s character is amazing. He is funny, sarcastic, sometimes rude but a great protagonist.

As a member of the London’s Friendly 20- and 30-Something Book Club, I found Family Ties: Thicker than Blood a deeply emotional and layered read. B.G. Howard paints a vivid picture of post-9/11 life through Willie LeBeaux’s struggle to escape his painful past and find redemption in the chaos of New York City.

It’s a story about choices, identity, and the complicated ties that bind us family, love, and loyalty. Thought-provoking and heartfelt, it kept our club talking long after we finished.

Thank you to Booktasters for giving me this book to read.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book although I did find myself struggling with the first two chapters but afterwards it was smooth sailing. The writing style of the book is gorgeous, (mixing crime, love and thrill) the story line well paced and I did find it quite descriptive in nature.

This was my first time reading B.G. Howard and he's quite a promising author and I'm looking forward to reading more of his work.

The author effectively shows the different types of family you can have other than blood relatives and how they can impact your life. I wanted so much more when the book ended; I was delighted to read that a sequel was in the making.
