A Revolução de Anita

A revolução de Anita é um relato ficcional da campanha de alfabetização realizada em Cuba no ano de 1961, em que mais de 700 mil pessoas – em sua maioria camponeses pobres – aprenderam a ler e a escrever. Tal ação tornou a pequena ilha território livre de analfabetismo. Essa campanha foi uma das tantas iniciativas da Revolução Cubana para libertar o povo e o país do domínio colonial e da ignorância.

Ao acompanharmos a trajetória de Anita Fonseca, vemos a transformação de uma menina, de 14 anos de idade, cheia de privilégios, mas que impactada pela revolução – e pelo assassinato de Conrado Benítez, um jovem que queria alfabetizar camponeses – decide se tornar voluntária da campanha de alfabetização. Por meio de seu diário e de suas cartas, vivenciamos as contradições de uma jovem que está passando por várias transformações tanto sentimentais quanto físicas.

Além disso, podemos ver também uma pequena (grande) parte das mudanças que ocorreram na vida de Ramón, Clara e Zenaida, camponeses pobres educandos de Anita, principalmente com relação à perspectiva de que suas vidas e seu futuro poderiam ser diferentes.

About the author

Shirley Langer left her heart in Tofino when she reluctantly moved to Victoria. While in Tofino, she wrote and published Road's End: Tales of Tofino, a book about Tofino, some of its “characters” and the character of the place. Shirley moved to the west coast in 1995 from eastern Ontario (Brighton, Carrying Place, Belleville) but was raised in Ingersoll Ontario. Other than her four offspring, the highlight of her life was the nearly five years spent in Cuba in the '60s, participating in the massive social change experiment that followed that country's Revolution. Inspired by Cuba's emphasis on education, Shirley has written a novel called Anita's Revolution, an historical fiction about how over 100,000 Cuban teens volunteered to teach literacy to one million adults, resulting in a transformation of both the newly-literate adults and the country. Shirley believes the creative force of words, education and knowledge cannot be overestimated. A dilettante, Shirley will write about almost anything.

A história da alfabetização de camponeses é lindíssima. Gostei de saber mais a respeito. Fiquei emocionada com as cartas e com o propósito dos brigadistas.

A forma pela qual foi escrita a obra diminuiu um pouco meu engajamento (não consegui sentir-me conectada a nenhum personagem).

I've just started reading "Anita's Revolution" and have already learned a lot about Cuba's past before and during Castro's revolution. I'm anticipating an exciting read that shows Cuba as it really was through the eyes of a teenage girl who becomes involved in helping further the new government's goal of making every Cuban literate.

I'm still reading it, still enjoying this amazing story. Unfortunately I've had to put it aside for a time to attend to other things, but look forward to get back to Anita's Revolution very soon.

Anita's Revolution tells a great story and offers a view of Cuba during the revolution that too many of us never saw. I learned a lot and enjoyed the journey toward literacy along with Anita and the other brigadistas.

I loved this book. It was the first book I’ve read in it’s entirety for quite some time. (years) The author kept me engaged and now I want to read other books she’s written...I know there is at least one. 🌻
