EXCERPT: I don't wish to frighten you, but it's impossible to explain any other way. Please do not go to the gas station in Arenas. The American's store. Do not go there on August 14, 2009. I don't want to scare you, but it could be the day of your death. Don't go. I'm sorry, I had to warn you.

MY THOUGHTS: I am going to start with an excerpt from the author's foreword....'I reread The Warning today and suffer when I discover certain passages that I'd never write in the same way now. I wince at each confusing shift in point of view, I roll my eyes at certain similes and metaphors, and I cringe at characters' intrusive thoughts.'
I feel your pain Paul Pen. I really do, as I did throughout this read. The shifts in not only the point of view, but also the timelines, was confusing. Very confusing. The story doesn't flow at all. It ought to have been creepy and suspenseful - the plot certainly had all the right ingredients - but I felt none of that. In fact, by the time I reached the 40% point, I was skimming, and I continued to do so through to the 90% point where it finally caught my interest.
I felt nothing for any of the characters - they are simply awful and unlikable, except for poor little Leo, bullied both at school and at home, and Linda, the housekeeper.
I would love to see Paul Pen rewrite this book now, knowing what he does now with several more novels to his name. I believe it would be a vastly different book. There is so much potential that could be explored and developed.

Hoy les traigo uno de los pocos libros de Paul Pen que me quedaban por leer. Ya solo me queda La metamorfosis infinita y la nueva novela que está a punto de salir del horno; "Al otro lado de la carretera", para estar al día con él.
"El aviso", es la primera novela del autor y se nota, me he llevado una decepción después de haber leído obras tan buenas como "El brillo de las luciérnagas."
Lo he encontrado muy lento, excesivamente descriptivo y reiterativo en cada situación que se le plantea a determinados personajes, dando vueltas continuamente sobre el mismo tema.
Ni siquiera la narración intercalando los hechos del pasado y presente hasta que ambos confluyen, me ha hecho la lectura más fluida. Un recurso que suele gustarme y tenerme en vilo aquí se me ha hecho tedioso.
Ambas historias transcurren en un tranquilo pueblo residencial a las afueras de Madrid que se llama Arenas de la Despernada.
Por un lado tenemos los hechos narrados en el presente (año 2009) a través de la historia de Leo, un niño de ocho años introvertido y solitario, que prefiere pasar la horas leyendo un libro que haciendo amigos, hasta que un buen día su mundo y cordura se tambalean al recibir una carta avisándole de la fecha de su muerte.
Este será el primero de una serie de acontecimientos en los que los extraños mensajes se irán sucediendo y el pánico irá aumentando. Desde el principio, sus padres desconfían de la veracidad de dichas cartas atribuyéndole al propio Leo la autoría de estas.
Cuando finalmente intenten escuchar a su hijo y busquen respuestas se verán inmersos en un terrible descubrimiento.
Por otro lado, tenemos la narración de los hechos del pasado (año 2000) con Aarón como protagonista indiscutible. Quien ha decidido poner fin a la relación con su novia Andrea tras diez años de noviazgo.
Tras este hecho, la noche desembocará en una serie de fatales casualidades.
Tras la ruptura, no se encuentra con ánimos de llevar su habitual encargo al Open o como la conocen todos; la tienda del americano, la típica tienda que tienen muchas estaciones de servicio, pidiéndole entonces a su amigo David que le haga un favor por esa noche.
Lo que ocurre hará que Aarón viva atormentado por la culpa e intentará desesperadamente buscar una explicación para tal trágico suceso, el cual viene repitiéndose desde hace décadas.
No se imagina el cruce de destinos que le depara el futuro.
Suena muy interesante, ¿verdad?, lo cierto es que si, es el claro ejemplo de buena idea con un mal planteamiento. Pero claro, esto no deja de ser una mera opinión personal. Me han sobrado muchas cosas y faltado respuestas tras ese final precipitado.
En definitiva, para tener poco más de 300 páginas se me ha hecho muy largo y el cierre tampoco me ha parecido satisfactorio, dejando múltiples cuestiones a libre interpretación.
Aunque un aspecto que sí me ha gustado mucho es la mención de varios grupos que me gustan como Nirvana o Dover, pero no ha sido suficiente ni determinante en mi valoración y apreciación de la novela en su conjunto.
Ahora toca ver la adaptación que ha hecho Daniel Calparsoro y que podemos encontrar en Netflix, con Raúl Arévalo, Belén Cuesta y Aura Garrido como protagonistas 🎬 Espero que consiga transmitirme mejores sensaciones.

I DON'T WISH TO FRIGHTEN YOU....
Eight year old Leo, a uniquely "different" boy who has become the center of all bullying at his school, opens a note in his backpack addressed To The Nine Year Old Boy. Scared, shaking in terror, Leo gives the note to his parents who, by the way, should be nominated for the worst parents in all of literature. They assume that Leo has written the note for attention and add to his torment rather than comprehending the danger.
In the same, small Spanish town, a series of robbery/murders have been occurring for nearly a century. The note suggests that little Leo could possibly be the next to die.
In the introduction, the author, Paul Pen, apologizes for this, his first book, explaining that while we in the US are just now reading The Warning, it was his first work and therefore flawed. (insert laughing here) If The Warning is his most flawed work then I cannot imagine how incredible his subsequent work has to be! The Warning is classical horror at its finest and by "horror" I am referring to the original genre that brought us Frankenstein, The Yellow Wallpaper, Shirley Jackson's work and the first writings of Stephen King. It is the genre that will leave you with an uneasy feeling, have you looking over your shoulder for something which you cannot name. Paul Pen has given us a tale in which you hope for a happily after ending knowing that there cannot be one - can there?
Told in alternate timelines nearly a decade apart, The Warning is the story of Aaron, Andrea and David who are attempting to cope with the senseless shooting of David. Aaron believes he has found a link from David's shooting to three others in the past. He hopes to stop a fourth one in the future, even if he drives himself insane in the process. Alternately, there is Leo a child who is tormented by bullies and by his own mother relentlessly. Aaron concludes that it is Leo who will be killed. Now he has to convince others and attempt to stop a killing that will happen nine years in the future.
While the book started a tiiiinny bit slow for me, it quickly all came together and rapidly became a book that absolutely floored me, so much so that I read this one in one sitting. It truly is one of the best books of any genre that I have read in ages! Even if you don't think that you like "horror," this is a book that you will not want to miss. It isn't zombie apocalypse horror, it is true, psychological drama at its best.
Paul Pen's books have been made into Netflix movies, including The Warning, and he currently is working on a Netflix series. Currently you can see The Warning on Netflix - but not until you read the book.

Estando ya inmersa en la lectura de la última obra de Paul Pen, os traigo mi opinión sobre su ópera prima: El aviso.
Ya de primeras os “aviso” que no soy muy objetiva con este autor ya que me encandiló con el Brillo de las luciérnagas, pinchó mi corazoncito con La casa entre los cactus, me llevó de viaje con Un matrimonio perfecto y ahora me ha hecho ver las estrellas con El aviso (y todo esto sin contaros lo que estoy viviendo con A un lado de la carretera..).
Como habréis notado es un autor que me gusta mucho, solo me queda un libro y medio suyo además de algunos de sus relatos y me ha demostrado que es único en crear ambientaciones opresivas sin serlo. Es un maestro describiendo escenas y abriendo tus sentidos hasta sentirte parte de la historia.
El aviso, como os decía es su primer libro del que ha salido muy airoso sin duda pero que me ha dejado al final con alguna incertidumbre. El ritmo no es tan trepidante como en sus libros posteriores y a veces resulta algo repetitivo pero, damas y caballeros, es su primera historia publicada, démosle un poco de tregua!
Es una historia original, que te atrapa y te deja intrigado dándole vueltas cada vez que tienes que dejar de leer. ¿Qué pasaría si recibís una carta en la que os avisan de la fecha de vuestra muerte? ¿Qué haríais? ¿intentaríais cambiar los acontecimientos? ¿Os meteríais bajo las sábanas? ¿Afrontaríais lo que tenga que venir? ¿Qué haríais el tiempo que queda hasta esa fecha?
La historia está narrada en dos hilos temporales separados por 9 años de diferencia.
En la actualidad (2009) vamos a conocer a Leo, un niño con algunos problemas de adaptación en el colegio al que le resulta más sencillo conocer mundo a través de los libros y mundos a través de su telescopio.
En el pasado conoceremos a Aaron que tras romper con su novia de toda la vida se enfrentará a una serie de acontecimientos que trastocarán su vida todavía más.
Sin duda un argumento original con un desenlace que en mi grupo de lectura ha generado bastante polémica.

En la actualidad (2009) vamos a conocer a Leo, un niño con algunos problemas de adaptación en el colegio al que le resulta más sencillo conocer mundo a través de los libros y mundos a través de su telescopio.
En el pasado conoceremos a Aaron que tras romper con su novia de toda la vida se enfrentará a una serie de acontecimientos que trastocarán su vida todavía más.
Sin duda un argumento original con un desenlace que en mi grupo de lectura ha generado bastante polémica.

Se nota que es su primera novela y no tiene la frescura de los siguientes. Salvo la metamorfosis infinita que me pareció mal, he leído todos sus libros y todos con muy buenas puntuaciones, pero este se me ha hecho lento, pesado y aburrido. Os recomiendo a este escritor de thrillers muy fuerte, pero este libro en particular puedes obviarlo. Hay una película sobre él, pero tampoco me han quedado ganas de verla.

Después de El brillo de las luciérnagas, he querido comenzar desde el principio con sus publicaciones. No me ha decepcionado en absoluto. Siento pena y rabia después de terminarlo; es un libro que recomendaría sin duda. Gracias Paul Pen.

I was not disappointed and delighted in seeing the author's first novel attempt. His preface apologizes for his early novice writing errors, but I couldn't see them because Simon Bruni's exceptional translation from Spanish to English must have corrected or disguised any prior imperfections.
I also appreciated the companion Audible narration that complements the thought-provoking storyline.
Paul Pen's provocative approach to exploring the hidden side of otherwise normal families again reveals itself in this work.

Fue una muy buena lectura, el giro al final me dejó impactada, estuve medio libro pensando que lo que quería Áaron se iba a lograr y todos iban a ser felices por siempre y la rueda se iba a romper por fin.
Solo diré ¡maldita Victoria!, no debió ser madre nunca, pienso que todo lo veía como una jugada bien pensada, Amador también tuvo la mayor parte de momentos malos, tan débil y manipulable.

Viajamos a Arenas, una idílica urbanización en Madrid para conocer a Leo, un niño de 8 años antisocial y bastante vulnerable que sufre de acoso en el colegio y es incomprendido por sus padres. La llegada del verano le da un respiro, pero su noveno cumpleaños está marcado en rojo en la mente de Aarón, un farmacéutico que investiga una serie de sucesos en el Open, una tienda/supermercado conocida como "el Americano", que se repiten durante los años con una serie de datos en común y que no pueden ser una simple casualidad. Aarón se mete tanto en el papel que acaba por perder a su novia de muchos años y casi a su amigo de toda la vida.
Un libro fabuloso y con una trama bastante original y enmarañada, de esos que apetece leer y no soltar hasta acabarlo. Aunque es compleja, como digo, es fácil imaginar lo que va a suceder. A pesar de esto, es una novela de intriga muy adictiva, con unos personajes muy bien desarrollados que maduran y evolucionan de manera increíble.
A modo general, un libro fácil de leer y que recomiendo a aquellos que busquen novelas que provocan en el lector sensaciones de atadura y de necesidad.

Genero thriller, 7 horas de tiempo de lectura, 336 paginas, narrada en tercera persona, capítulos cortos, 2 protagonistas principales, varios secundarios, dos ámbitos temporales y un único espacial.
Esta es la primera novela de Paul Pen y, sin embargo, probablemente una de las mejores. En mi caso, es la tercera que leo del autor madrileño; empecé con El brillo de las luciérnagas, continúe con su ultima entrega Al otro lado de la carretera y tan solo un mes después de concluir esta ultima, me puse con su primera incursión en la narrativa con El aviso.
Pues bien, que puedo decir de este escritor y de su trabajo, pues que es un excelente narrador, en ésta su primera obra, vuelve a sumergirnos en una historia de suspense en el que consigue tenerte atrapado en una historia terrible en la que no sabes como va a avanzar para resolver o no el desenlace.
A mi, al igual que las otras don novelas suyas que he leído, me ha vuelto a cautivar con su narrativa ágil, descriptiva e inquietante con la que nos va revelando los hechos y los personajes.
En mi caso ha vuelto a invadirme en la lectura esa sensación de que, a pesar de que el autor no oculta que los hechos acaecen en algún lugar de la geografía española, lo hace de tal forma que yo me siento sumergido en cualquier pueblo relativamente pequeño de la costa oeste americana, lo cual me resulta muy curioso.
En definitiva, el libro es maravilloso, te tiene en todo momento acongojado con la situación de suspense que te plantea y es una novela que lees de forma amena en tres tardes.
Me quedan dos novelas de este grandísimo, aunque todavía joven autor, y no dejare pasar mucho tiempo sin ponerme con ellas.

Me mantuvo relativamente intrigada.
Mi decepción - e incredulidad - es que el autor no aporta ni un sólo argumento o teoría para sustentar o justificar la premisa clave de toda la historia: ni "el destino", ni "la actividad cósmica", ni "el plan maquiavélico de un asesino en serie", ni "una maldición ancestral", ni "los extraterrestres"... ¡NADA! Por lo que, aunque el final resultara previsible... fue absurdo.

A very good mystery that starts a bit slow but then moves quite well. It was interesting to find all the intersecting moving pieces and I really appreciated the diagrams in the story. The cast takes a minute to get to know, as it's a little big, but it's not too bad. I enjoyed this one.

I absolutely loved this story of an eight-year old boy who receives a cryptic warning in a letter. It started off a bit slow, and I honestly wasn't sure I was even going to finish it in the early going, but I persevered, and eventually the disjointed characters and time periods all became clear -- and brilliant. I love patterns and numbers and clues anyway, so Aaron's putting together the pattern of the Open store's robbery/murders was just amazing and so smart to me. I appreciated the simple graphics in the Kindle book that made his discovery come alive. Little Leo, a sad but smart bullied kid, just broke my heart and left it bleeding on the table. I don't want to give anything away, but this is an impactful, suspenseful book that I came to love. The last 20% is absolutely gripping.

Este es el tercer libro que leo de Pen y ya empiezo a reconocer un poco su sello. Este es su primer libro publicado y puedo decir que lo sentí un poco más ligero que los siguientes, lo que no significa que sea un libro suave o no logre ese efecto que lo caracteriza. La historia, al igual que las otras, me parece que tiene un argumento original y diferente a lo que solemos encontrar dentro de este género, sin embargo debo reconocer que me costó mucho entender los tiempos y descubrir a donde nos quería llevar el autor con esos brincos del tiempo, pero una vez involucrada no podía para de leer. Yo sin duda seguiré con los relatos cortos y con lo que nos brinde en un futuro.

Reseña de El Aviso, de Paul Pen
La historia gira en torno a un local/gasolinera donde se producen asesinatos cada x tiempo. La historia se desarrolla entre dos tiempos diferentes y entre la perspectiva de diferentes personajes.
Los personajes son bastante notables. Aarón, portagonista de la historia, es bastante carismático y parece que es el que saca un poco a flote la historia. La historia que se desarrolla durante la secuencia de Aarón es la más vertiginosa y entretenida. La de Leo, otro protagonista, se me hizo más aburrida y tediosa. La razón por la que suceden los asesinatos no queda bastante clara y la premisa general del libro torna en un ¿por qué?
El final es desgarrador, impactante y emocionante.

Estupendo, maravilloso, ansioso, impredecible, duro y cruel. Estas son pocas palabras para lo que esta lectura te deja y lo que te hace sentir. Cuando en un libro tengo niños de por medio sufro mucho más, ya bien por mi papel de mamá pato en las aulas, o porque veo en los niños una vulnerabilidad que me parte en dos.
Como con todos los libros de este autor, he sufrido pasando las páginas, porque no quiero que acabe. Se me hacen cortos, y tan ligeros, que cada página se me pasa demasiado rápido. No ha sido este una excepción. Su primera novela, y qué novela! No dejes de leer a este autor, no os priveis del lujo de soñar con cada página, porque nunca os dejará indiferente.

Éste era el último libro que me falta por leer del autor y como en sus otros trabajos me ha vuelto a dejar descolocada completamente. Bien es cierto, que ésta no es una novela al uso normal, pero tampoco lo son ninguno de sus libros. Paul Pen es un autor difícil de meter en una categoría, lo que sí es verdad es que, me encanta como escribe. Con él siempre tengo la misma sensación, escribe bonito hasta los momentos más horribles y consigue remover todas mis convicciones mientras leo.
En esta ocasión, me he encontrado con una historia con unos toques un tanto paranormales. Lo que más me ha gustado es como describe el autor el comportamiento de cada uno de los personajes, cómo transmite su angustia y su desesperación en las circunstancias que se van desarrollando. Es increíble cómo expone los comportamientos humanos, tan reales.
Y sobre todo los pequeños detalles que va dejando durante la narración, que son los que hacen únicos sus libros. Nada está escrito por casualidad, todo tiene su razón de ser.
Y el final… mejor no decir nada, simplemente que la tensión y la angustia están garantizadas.

It would have been 5 stars for the novel... but.... I don't want to spoil anything... the book was well written, engaging, I don't care if it was the firs Pul Pen's book, it was good. But the ending..it wasn't what I wanted. So if I was the author, would I have ended it differently? No, I would probably have written another story instead! No other possible solution.... still, I'm glad to have read a good book, but if I had to recommend something from the author it would be "Under the water".. his real latest novel, which I truly loved!

This was my first book by this author so I didn't know what to expect. I was attracted to this story by the description but the story actually turned out very different than I was expecting. It did start out a bit slow but then things started to come together and get interesting. I found myself connecting with Leo and his situation made me feel really sad. Unfortunately I didn't really care for the ending, I felt that the reader deserved a bit more closure. All in all I enjoyed this book and I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Este era el libro que me faltaba por leer de este autor y me lo habían recomendado mucho. La historia es buena, la intriga está servida, pero creo que si no tuvieran tanta importancia las fechas y los números en esta historia quizás me habría gustado más. También decir que las historias con niños me afectan y más si éste no lo pasa bien pero tiene un final esperado y la trama es buena.

No le puedo poner 5 estrellas porque hacia la mitad del libro se vuelve un poco repetitivo. Menos mal que fue un poco sólo, y luego le pone remedio😜
