Doctor Who: Death's Deal

Rate this book
Responding to multiple maydays, the TARDIS lands on the planet of Death’s Deal, but the distress calls are old, the final echoes of terrified lost souls. This is an exotic world of lethal creatures, nicknamed ‘The Deadliest Planet in the Galaxy’, and only the brave, foolhardy or greedy would ever dare to visit.

Finding themselves stranded among a motley bunch of space-tourists, the Doctor and Donna must lead a struggle for survival against the frenzied wildlife, as they slowly realise that other members of the group have very different agendas.

And soon the Doctor learns of an even bigger threat hiding on Death’s Deal. Somewhere deep below the surface, is something that must never be unearthed.
Time is running out, and only an impossible survivor holds the key…

"Who’s leaving me messages on a random derelict spaceship? Any ideas?"

Narrated by Catherine Tate

The tenth Doctor and Donna visit a planet that is considered dangerous and they end up trapped with a group of travellers. I felt Tate did a good job with the different character voices especially her own. The Doctor felt like 10 and the use of music helped to reminiscent the era. It was a decent story but one of the weaker ones of the set.

This is an audiobook based on the television series and it is also part of a series of audiobooks. It can be read as a stand alone but each book has a little connecting thread that will hopefully payoff in the final book. Each audiobook has a different Doctor. In this one, The Tenth Doctor and Donna visit a planet which is considered extremely dangerous. Next thing you know they are trapped on this planet with a group of travelers.

I was really looking forward to this one as the narration is done by the actress who played Donna. I had no problem with her narration. This is a strong book about Donna's character. I didn't think this was the best book for the portrayal of The Tenth Doctor. It seemed a little forced. As for the story it was just okay as it is split up between The Doctor and his adventure and Donna with hers. The best part of the story was the little twist reveal at the end and The Tenth Doctor recognizing the message and himself in the incarnation of The Eleventh Doctor since these two have met on the show.

This was still an enjoyable read but didn't grab me like the previous offering. I am glad that I am at the final book and I am hoping the payoff of all the adventures and collection of items works in the finale.

I loved the amount of sass contained in this audiobook, there’s always guaranteed to be sass where Donna Noble is involved! It was brilliant! Loved this little story with one of my favourite doctors and his companion. Great short story!

This might be the best example of this Destiny of the Doctor series so far! This was read by Catherine Tate, the actress who played Donna on the show, and she is excellent!

The story was the best so far as well, with two full points of view going on at once. I saw the focus on solely the companions as a weakness of some of the other stories, especially the stories for the 4th, 5th, 8th and 9th Doctors (while the 3rd didn't have much beyond the Doctor himself, although it did feature the Brigadier and Yates. As if we cared about Yates, that traitor!).

In this story, the Doctor and Donna pick up hundreds of distress signals all from the same planet, and decide to investigate. They land right next to another ship that's also just landed, that turns out to be the equivalent of a tourist safari cruise to the super dangerous planet that's covered with weird land coral and stalked by giant hungry monsters, each more dangerous, poisonous, and hungry than the last! Unfortunately, the planet turns out to be every bit as dangerous as advertised, and all but a few people get eaten up lickety split... and there is no retreat, because the tourist ship gets destroyed and the Tardis gets sucked underground!

There are some tense moments among the survivors, when it is realized that some among their number are pirates! It turns out that the planet is rich in 'slaughter crystals', which are both super dangerous and a super sought after source of energy. Part of the whole situation on the planet is meant to keep that a secret.

The Doctor travels with the other survivors, and checks out a particular mayday coming from a particular ship, which proves to be a message from his future self! (This is the connection with the other stories... Something has happened with the 11th Doctor, and he needs each of his previous selves to do something for him so that he has what he needs in his later story.) The 11th asks him to save the life of 'Erskine', and the Doctor discovers that the broken ship they had boarded had a 'Doctor Erskine' on board, a scientist who had come to study the planet's super dangerous ecosystem, but who was no longer with the ship. However, the ship was missing some key components, so they figured if he was alive, he'd set up camp somewhere else! Also, they found information about those slaughter crystals, and the pirate guy made a space call to a mining conglomerate... they were now sending an automated mission to strip mine the entire planet, which would kill everything in the entire ecosystem!

Just after leaving that ship, Donna and the Doctor get separated from each other!

Donna ends up falling into another sink hole, then fleeing for her life with a clam alien from the tourist ship. They discover they're actually fleeing through tunnels left by giant chompy worms, and after a chase, Donna is swallowed whole, only surviving by being enveloped by the clam man! They do eventually stumble upon the Tardis, but have to get through an entire cavern of slaughter crystals to get inside! Even once inside it's very tense, because worms attack and shake it all about, which jostles the clam man, who was fragile after passing through the bowels of one of the worms!

Also, it turned out that of the two remaining people with the 10th Doctor, only one was really a pirate, the other was just pretending, and was really Dr. Erskine's daughter, and she just wanted to find him and bring him home. Well, they did find him, but he'd gone totally crazy. All his crewmates were dead, he'd befriended two local danger beasts, and worshiped some kind of mollusk sarlac pit thing! They discovered that although his mind was off, Dr. Erskine had discovered the secret to the danger of the planet... they were sensitive to distress signals, and with so many downed ships on the planet, it was driving them all to a murderous rage! He also knew about the slaughter crystals, because when the pirate tried to get the jump on him, he revealed that the weird walking stick he had was actually a spear with a slaughter crystal on the end! It turns out you really, really don't want to be touched by a slaughter crystal!

The daughter tried to get through to her dad, but failed, despite entreating him to look inside the locket he still wore, which she knew contained a picture of them as a family. Instead, he marched Doctor and the daughter out to the sarlac pit thing, and was about to sacrifice them to it, when they swung into action! They fought with him, and Donna showed up with the Tardis just in the nick of time to throw them a rope and pull them out! Dr. Erskine fell into the pit and was killed, and all the 10th and the daughter were able to save was the locket.

That just left the mining conglomerate, whose automated ships had just arrived in the system. However, the Doctor merely contacted the ships and used his sonic screwdriver over the comm system to hack their computers, and blew them up. Easy peasy!

The death of Dr. Erskine seemingly meant that the mission the 11th had given the 10th had failed, however, the 10th first revealed that the locket contained a futuristic computer drive filled with all of the scientist's work and data from his planetary studies, and furthermore, he had decided that he had saved the daughter, also (as it happens) with the last name of Erskine! The mission was a success!

In fact, both the daughter and the clam guy decided to stay and further study the planet, data in hand. Over time, each of the downed ships were found, their distress signals turned off, and the planet went from 'most super dangerous - the entire ecosystem will track you down and murder you' to merely 'regular dangerous - maybe still don't come here though, monsters still eventually get hungry'. Huzzah!

2019 52 Book Challenge - 10) A Plant On The Cover

This book was sort of just meh. The plot was okay, the characterisation was okay, Catherine Tate was good at narrating for herself, and okay at narrating for the Doctor. She didn't try to imitate David Tennant as some of the other companions tried for their Doctors in this series, which was probably a good idea. The downside was that everything in this audio just sounded like Donna even when it wasn't Donna speaking, because of the way that Catherine Tate narrated.

A story featuring my favourite doctor and companion? What's not to love? This only about an hour long audio book definetly (ugh, I never know how to spell that word...) brought back the golden days of New Who. It makes me crave more adventures with Ten so much! I certainly hope that the 13th Doctor will be more like David Tennant's again

(Needless to say Catherine Tate did an amazing job narrating!)

I'm making a quick diversion to the not-audio-books-because-they-weren't-books-but-they're-still-prose-read-aloud Destiny of the Doctor plays. Though, I'm not listening to the entirety of the series, and not in chronological order.

this is a pretty okay story - nothing groundbreaking and probably not something I'll think too much about. The plot is thought out *just* well enough, and there's no room for any character development that wasn't already done on the show. They capture the feel of a Ten and Donna ep, even without Murray Gold's score or Tennant. Death's Deal is largely a pleasant nostalgia trip, than anything else.

Catherine Tate smartly doesn't try to imitate Tennant's accent, but she captures his inflections very well. She does try to capture Matt Smith's sound, and it's gloriously awful.* I didn't realize I missed Donna so.

I enjoyed this for what it is, nothing more and nothing less. I'm going to save Ten and Donna's proper Big Finish episodes for later. Gives me something to look forward to.

*I don't understand why he's here, or how that even fits in the larger canon. How does Ten know Eleven but not in the 50th? Not that the 50th didn't have its own share of fiddling with continuity. Would it have helped if I listened to the previous stories first? PROBABLY. Of course, even if the Big Finish stories are canon, a life in comics allows me to decide what I do and don't consider canon in something as long-running and massive as DW, so I'll just pretend Eleven was never here lmao.

This was enjoyable.

I had forgotten how much I enjoy Big Finish productions.
I didn't know this was #10 in a series, which normally would irk me, but this time it didn't.

Sadly it's been a few days, and I've listened to many other things since, so I can't give it a proper review.

Catherine Tate did a good job narrating.

It's funny, I hated Donna when she first showed up in Runaway Bride, but she definitely became one of my fave companions.

- Read for the Medievalathon, prompt "A book with a person on the cover". Clergy level 3: Priest. Rank gained: Empress -

I have to say that I tend to be rather squeamish so some parts of this story didn't work well for me, haha. But overall, it was really fun to listen to it and I loved Donna's sassiness! (it was also super cool that the actress who played Donna read the audiobook!)

One of the other reviewers mentioned that these stories are somehow tied together, so I might go back and start listening from the first one, even though I'm not familiar with the original serieses. But it's a fun scifi romp, full of aliens and humour, so what's not to enjoy? :)

The tenth story in the series is read by Catherine Tate, who played Donna in the TV series.

The Doctor and Donna respond to a distress call and find themselves on a planet full of hostile life forms, which they then have to escape as they search for a maguffin. There are also space pirates and a mad old hermit involved, but largely so that there's somebody else to be threatened by the monsters. It's one of those stories that's much easier to do as a book (audio or otherwise) than on a TV budget, given the amount of CGI that would be involved, but it doesn't particularly inspire, or feel more like a Tenth Doctor story than one from any other era.

Certainly, the Doctor's characterisation is good, and Tate does a surprisingly good job reading his lines. And the incidental music is reminiscent of the era, which helps. But it's just not a very engaging or unique story, nor does it engage with any particular themes that remind one specifically of Ten. The best part is probably Donna herself, whose personality does come across strongly.

If you're a fan of the Tenth Doctor specifically - and, indeed, of Donna - it's likely a decent enough story, and a nice reminder of the era. But, to my mind, it's one of the weaker ones in this series, easily outshone by Nine's story if you're only into Nu Who, and by Two's or Seven's if you're not.

A really solid "Doctor Who" story. It didn't particularly stand out like some of my favorite episodes, but if you're a fan missing the 10th Doctor, then this is a great way to revisit that time in the show's history. You have a mysterious planet and some nice conflict between both the best and worst of humanity--the worst, in this particular case, being greed/thirst for power, as the Doctor is trying to ensure that dangerous crystals on the planet Death's Deal don't get mined for nefarious purposes. An added bonus is that there's a nice little cameo (so to speak) from the 11th Doctor telling the 10th what he must do, and a nice little twist with "saving Urskin." But the best part of this audiobook? IT'S NARRATED BY CATHERINE TATE! Donna Noble is my personal favorite companion, so having, not only a story with her, but a story told by the actress who played her... well, basically it was a must-read...er...must-listen, I mean.

3.5 stars.

I enjoyed the audiobook and it was nice for a road trip. Easy to follow along to. It had that nice Doctor Who touch to it and you could visualize the events as they happened. It was a bit cheesy with the unique aliens and all that, but you can expect that from all Doctor Who series/books :) It was narrated by Cathryn Tate, who plays Donna Noble in the t.v series, and she did a wonderful job narrating all the characters. The only thing I thought was a bit off was the Doctor’s personality. It just took a little more effort to recognize his playful personality, but other than that, it’s the same old 10th Doctor Who! Plenty of allons-y’s along the way!

God bless!

Fun short Doctor Who story narrated by Catharine Tate. It is set not long after the Doctor and Donna started travelling together.
My main problem was keeping track of a couple of ancillary characters who seemed to switch jobs/personalities early on in the book.
A nice story and with an ending that isn't all sweetness and light... which is appreciated.

Not bad but forgettable. Still, Donna Noble is a great companion as always. The 10th Doctor doesn't appear as much as I thought he would, specially compared to the other audios of the series. I'm so glad that all of these audios were on Spotify and I didn't have to buy them. Guess I'm ready to finish this saga, just one more to go.

It is primarily narrated by Catherine Tate, and she does a good job, but it was a little funny to hear her try and do Ten's voice, like she gets the vibe right, but she can't quite pull off David Tenet's voice. The story itself was good, the Doctor and Donna get stranded on this deadly planet with others, it was a bit gory in spots, because people are getting killed, but overall I enjoyed it.

This was a quick listen/read for an audiobook but I enjoyed it immensely. The book is narrated by Catherine Tate, which was delightful. She does the best 10th Doctor impressions so it really adds to the narration. Fun story too, with interesting secondary characters.

Might be I wasn't paying enough attention, but it's just kind of meh. The characters are kind of boring and the adventure takes itself a bit more seriously than it merits. Maybe I should resisted, but it just didn't strike me as all that interesting.

One of the better of this series especially as Catherine Tate does the voices.

Donna and the Doctor land on a deadly planet where the indigenous life forms are a vicious and want to eat you.

Fun romp that’s got a few good laughs and even a tense moment or two. Worth a listen!

Could be because I listened to this on a train full of rowdy weekenders, and so my concentration wasn't always 100%, but by the high standards of the Donna era this story wasn't above average. Good, tho, and Catherine Tate performed it really well.

Since it's a new year I've decided to add audiobooks to my routine to motivate myself be a little more productive or at least not sit in silence on my day's off. This was a good one to start with. It was a fun little adventure that was easy to listen to while I sorted my laundry.

A very enjoyable but bleak story with some nice science fiction horror! Darren Jones has written a great survival story with yet a greater threat looming, whilst Catherine Tate and Duncan Wisbey provide this tale with their great performances! 8/10

Another solidly entertaining adventure. Perhaps it was just the presence of Catherine Tate, but even though it is just another “narrated” audiobook, as opposed to being a full-cast audio-drama, this one was quite good.

This is another pretty good Doctor Who adventure, and the next-to-last Destiny of the Doctor story.
I enjoyed Catherine Tate's narration. I'd always liked Donna Noble, and it was nice to hear her voice again. The story itself was a good one too, though a bit weird.

Pretty good little adventure. When I listen to these, I always have trouble envisioning the alien races, so it would be cool to see someone animate these.

Catherine Tate was good as always, but I would’ve liked David Tennet and Matt Smith to reprise their roles.

honestly, I did not pay much attention to the story because I was listening to it while I fell asleep, but I liked what I caught bits off. the fact that Catherine tate read both Donna and Ten's part makes this a 5/5 for me already lmao
