A child of immigrants, Margery Kraus knew the value of hard work from an early age. Graduating from college before she had finished high school, she learned to be a risk taker. As a young wife and mother coming of age in the 1960s, she faced plenty of people who told her, “You can’t do that.” But in the end, she did: she founded APCO Worldwide, a global consulting firm headquartered in Washington, DC, specializing in public affairs, communication, and business consulting for major multinationals. Under her leadership, the company grew from nothing to almost $150 million in revenues. In Roots And Wings, Kraus shares the ten lessons she learned from motherhood and leadership that guided her along the way―an inspiration to all seeking to overcome obstacles, achieve career and personal success, and do the right thing.
You may not have heard of Margery Kraus, but she is very important in my own life, in that she founded my employer, APCO Worldwide, in 1984 and remains our Executive Chairman. (Incidentally, the commemoration of the 1984 date explains why I dressed up as a Ghostbuster for last year's Christmas party.) This is quite a short book in which she explains her personal philosophy, and how she links her family life to running the company (which does have rather a family atmosphere about it). There are lots of illustrations, and I learned a lot about the author's early life - like many Americans, her family fled Nazi Europe; unlike many, they stopped off in Cuba for a number of years en route; she also had early business experience assisting her father in running a football team. It's a personal account of her career, including one or two incidents that I recognised from my own five years with the company. An interesting snapshot of the life (or lives) of a woman who has been successful in business while also managing her family.
Margery Kraus is such an extraordinary and savvy business woman! Her story is deeply insightful, candid and captivating. There is just so much to learn from her experience in starting and growing a business and ultimately succeeding in a world where we women are often told we can't or shouldn't do something that might make us equal to (or even better than) our male counterparts. Her book is short and to the point, and is quite motivating and makes a positive impact on everyone who reads it. . "Roots and Wings" releases tomorrow, 10/22 from #SparkPress and is part of Booksparks Self Care Book Tour.
Good advice for the modern woman and young girls everywhere - you can have it all - not necessarily at the same time and not without some bumps along the way - but with humility, gratitude and hard work. The author’s buzz word is work-life integration rather than balance.
This is an autobiography focusing on business. It was a nice premise & was well thought out. It had some great insights concerning both motherhood & business & how, sometimes, they correlate to each other.
Enjoyable read about balancing motherhood while keeping on track with a successful professional career. Author speaks from experience and his refreshingly honest. Solid lessons shared and especially liked the 10-year old trip concept.
An honest account of how Kraus found balance between working and being a mother. She doesn’t sugarcoat it and is forthcoming in her imperfections. Solid advice but nothing mind blowing or new.
