Life is easy for Cassie…

Born in the post-rise utopia of New Melbourne, she has everything she needs, but lacks the one thing she wants—attention from her parents.

Cassie is too young and sheltered to truly understand the hardship faced by humankind during the greatest disaster on earth. The horrors of the past are of no concern to her…

Until an impulsive decision to go diving during a storm leads her far away from the comforts of New Melbourne. Cassie soon discovers that not everybody lives the same way she does.

With her life in danger, the horrors of the past become the horrors of today. Will Cassie salvage the wreck of her life?

SALVAGED, part of the Drowned Earth series, is an excellent tale of division between the haves and have-nots in the wake of a devastating apocalypse.
Cassie has grown up in New Melbourne, an isolated community who are doing well. As well as having access to the basics of food and water, they are all educated and valued members of their community and very few of them understand how tough it is for those on the mainland, including Cassie.
That is, until a diving accident causes her to wash up onshore, far from the safety of her home.

Like all Novellas in the Drowned Earth series, they are standalone stories, and you can pick them up and read them in any order. SALVAGED is a great YA tale, but is going to be enjoyed and appreciated by people of all ages.

I was really looking forward to reading this novel and it didn't disappoint.

At first I read it greedily because I wanted to know what happened next and finished it off in a day. I loved that the story was feasible in the realm of the Drowned Earth remit and the story raced along at the pace that I read it.

Later I went back to it to read it more slowly and to enjoy the writing. I was happy that the writing was just as good on the second read and I enjoyed the novel even more the second time.

Salvaged is the eighth and final book in the Drowned Earth novellas series. The story is set sixty years after the ocean rises from an asteroid striking Antarctica. The main character, Cassie goes diving during a storm and gets struck by lightning. She survives, but washes up as salvage to local beach combers. Kidnapped by a rival gang, she fights to survive.

Salvaged is a surprisingly good, well-written and entertaining novella, about survival during hardship.

Cassie lives in a little bubble of utopia in a dystopian future.

She has no appreciation of the battled fought to create the island of New Melbourne, where she lives and is unaware of the struggles of the rest of Australia or the world for that matter.

In a fit of anger at her absent parents, Cassie makes the dangerous and near fatal decision to dive in a storm and is washed up on the shores of the mainland where she learns very quickly just how tough things are.

Her greatest desire is to simply go home but this becomes less likely as the dangers she faces grow more complicated. Resources are so limited on the mainland that even she becomes a commodity to trade.
