TT. Thorn Coyle has been arrested at least four times. Buy her a cup of tea or a good whisky and she'll tell you about it.

A salty-tongued, tattooed mystic, Thorn is author of the alt-history urban fantasy series The Panther Chronicles, the novel Like Water, and two short story collections. The Witches of Portland will be out in Spring, 2018. She has also written multiple non-fiction books including Sigil Magic for Writers, Artists & Other Creatives, Kissing the Limitless, and Evolutionary Witchcraft. Thorn's work appears in many anthologies, magazines, and collections.

She has taught magical practice in nine countries, on four continents, and in twenty-five states. Her other occupations have been numerous, and include working four years each on the Pacific Stock Options floor (as a young Anarchist punk with a blue, flat-top Mohawk), in a woman-run peep show, and full time in the San Francisco soup kitchen she ended up volunteering at for twenty years. All of this, along with her activism, informs her fiction.

An interloper to the Pacific Northwest, Thorn joyfully stalks city streets, writes in cafes, and talks to crows, squirrels, and trees.

Mild spoilers!

I love this series so much! Thorn's passion for justice and for magic suffuses these books. If you like urban fantasy stories but wish there were more of them about activists and people living their social justice beliefs as well as magic and the supernatural, look no further.

It was great to learn more about Moss after meeting him as a secondary character in previous books. As we get to know each member of the coven better, the books are getting richer. I haven't gone back to reread the previous books, but I'm looking forward to doing so with these closer looks at the individual members in mind.

Some folks may find Shaggy's indecision about whether to keep her pregnancy or not offputting - I was initially skeptical (I find a lot of mainstream plotlines pregnancy to be preachy and irritating, so even with authors I trust I brace myself a bit when they show up), but as we get to know her better, her indecision makes sense. The narrative is about *her*, about *her* situation, not about Why Everyone Should/Shouldn't Have Babies or how Birth Makes You A Woman, which I really appreciated.

This is an engaging, sometimes intense, read and it adds another great book to a great series.

My favorite so far

I have enjoyed all the Witches of Portland books. I have greatly enjoyed reading a series of books that actually speaks my own language, something I don’t get to do too often in the time/place where I live.
Having said that, this book in the series, By Dusk, was my favorite of all. The theme “Water is life” more poignant, more relevant now than ever, was presented in such a fierce, beautiful way. I confess I sobbed real tears during the book’s showdown.
I recommend reading the whole series. You will get the stories and histories of most of the other characters that take supporting roles in this book. (Each book features a different coven member.)
The books aren’t long. A few hours to read. I love the author’s community building and the evocations of the city of Portland.
Thorn Coyle, well done! Can’t wait to read Alejandro’s story!

I was all geeked to realize that 7,8, and 9 had come out as an omnibus! Woot! And such good timing. I needed it. If you're all doomscrolling and sad and like why government why??? This is such a lovely series. Each book is about a different coven member, and yes they're a little formulaic. That is, in fact, much a part of their charm. I need happy reading that is from the perspective of activism, witchcraft, and like, my people! Ahh. Loved it.
