Memories and Murder

Rate this book
It’s October in South Cove, California, and the locals in the quaint resort seem to be happily pairing off in the lull before the holidays. Everyone, that is, except for Jill Gardner’s elderly aunt, who just dumped her besotted fiancé—and she won’t say why.

When Jill hosts a talk at Coffee, Books, and More on the topic of elder abuse, all that’s really on her mind is lunch. But the topic hits close to home when she discovers Aunt Jackie has been getting mysterious calls. Jill’s certain the caller is a con artist, of course, but her feisty aunt claims to understand this, though she’s still shaken—and Harrold’s still heartbroken. Who’s behind the scam and why was her aunt targeted? When a volunteer from the Senior Project is found murdered, Jill’s detective boyfriend is on the case—and it soon becomes clear no one is safe when a caller from beyond becomes a killer in their midst.

Elder abuse is the focal point of the 10th Tourist Trap Mystery, Memories and Murder, written by Lynn Cahoon. In this cozy series, we explore what happens when a groups of ne'er-do-wells exploit an older person's naivete, and unfortunately Jill's Aunt Jackie has fallen for it once before. She's an easy target now, despite having learned from the prior shenanigans. Cahoon does well at highlighting the ways these rogues wear down your boundaries and leave you susceptible to believing what you want to believe. When someone is found dead, it opens up a can of works in this small California seaside town, and Jill wants to protect her aunt. What does the death have to do with the agency that's claiming they want to help Aunt Jackie? Which employee is behind all the nefarious drama? A good installment in the series, and it helped explain Jackie's weird behavior at the end of the last book. Plus, Deek becomes a more prevalent character and shows great signs of promise. Enjoying the series a lot.

I always enjoy a new adventure featuring protagonist Jill Gardner, owner of a cool coffee shop/bookstore in the small coastal town of South Cove. There are many likable characters in the Tourist Trap series such as Jill’s fiancé, Detective Greg King; her best friend Amy; her Aunt Jackie; ant the handsome baristas who help run the shop.

Aunt Jackie has everyone worried since she broke her engagement to Harrold Snider, who owns a shop across the street from Coffee, Books, and More. When Jill finally finds out why, she and Greg are, at once, shocked and suspicious. Author, Lynn Cahoon blends an intricate plot relating to elder crime and how easily one can be set up to become a scammer’s meal ticket. The story is interesting and educational and the culprit wasn’t easy for me to single out. Memories & Murder is a great addition to this long-running series!

I reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington. Thank you. This is an unbiased, honest review.

Switching from the darker psychological novels I normally read, I was in the mood for lighter fare.

I was attracted to this story about an amateur sleuth attempting to discover who is conning her aunt in a financial scam. Likable characters and a sunny California beach town setting sounded like salve after recent winter weather doldrums.

However, my reading experience was diminished by the smaller than normal font size. The book is listed at 202 pages but the paperback I received crammed the story into 167 pages! Boo, I read half of it with a magnifying glass.

I really had fun listening to Memories and Murder. I think it's one of the best book in the series. This time, in addition to a required local homicide there is also a mystery that centers around aunt Jackie. It left her in shambles so much so she had called off her engagement.

Memories and Murder by Lynn Cahoon is number eleven in her Tourist Trap series. I feel like I've been waiting forever for this book because readers finally get to find out why Aunt Jackie broke her engagement to Harrold.

Jill discovers why her aunt as been acting so strange and the topic is contemporary and too prevalent currently-seniors being scammed/victimized by unscrupulous men and women hoping to feed off of their emotions. Greg is involved in a murder case so Jill decides to do her own investigation into this scam. Are the two crimes connected? I enjoyed getting to know Deek more in this one. He's smart, quirky and a fantastic addition to the Coffee, Books & More "family". South Cove is a spot on the California coast that I want to visit. Since I've read every book in the series, I want to meet Jill, Greg, Amy, Aunt Jackie, Harrold, Toby and Deek. A quickly paced plot with red herrings, twists, turns and those red herrings that hide in plain sight kept me turning the pages until the finale. I highly recommend this book to cozy mystery fans.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Lyrical Underground via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.

It is always fun to return to small town South Cove, California on the central coast of the state where there is never a dull moment. Jill Gardner has a perfect job as the owner of Coffee, Books, and More where she works the early shift serving commuters their early coffee and maybe some cheesecake make by her friend Sadie. She has some great help with the shop and her Aunt Jackie keeps everyone in line. Then Jackie breaks off her engagement to shop owner Harrold and she isn't acting her normally feisty self. Then Jill discovers that someone is playing with Aunt Jackie's mind pretending to be her deceased husband. Things may have been tied to the local Senior Project. Sadie's friend Paula works at the Senior Project where it appears that things are fishy after Paula's boyfriend, who volunteers at the center, winds up dead and she is accused of the crime. Jill's boyfriend Police Chief and Detective Greg King is tied up with the murder while Jill, who would normally be all over it, is worried about her aunt and investigating her situation.
This is another great addition to the Tourist Trap Mysteries where you can expect to get hungry as Jill eats lots of cheesecake, brownies, and yummy dishes at Diamond Lille's. There is a whole cast of returning characters that make this series so good and always a great mystery to solve.
I received a complimentary ARC from Kensington Books and Lyrical Underground through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.

Jill is on the trail of a mysterious caller who is targeting her Aunt Jackie. When Jackie calls off her engagement to Harrold and starts acting out of character, Jill has to ramp up her investigating. However, someone wants to shut down Jill's amateur sleuthing career - permanently!

I enjoy this series for so many reasons - the writing style allows the reader to feel as if they are "in the book" solving the mystery, the bookshop/coffee shop setting, the character of Jill is level-headed and kind, the romance is a perfect balance with the mystery, the entertaining supporting characters and it's nice to see a character whose age and life experiences are relatable to readers. This book is fast-paced and the red herrings are very subtle but will make it a challenge for a reader to solve the mystery.

Memories and Murder is a perfect mystery to curl up with on a chilly Autumn day!

I received an ARC from NetGalley for a fair and honest review of this book.

Who knew elder abuse and murder went hand in hand, but Jill, Greg and gang are back in action as they try to find out who is picking on the elderly and who killed a local elder counselor's boyfriend in her house! The plot is intriguing as several storylines overlap, once again creating a well woven story sure to entertain! The best part is we are finally back to a full length story that picks up where the timeline left off prior to the author deviating to write several novellas to help flesh out the series for new readers to enjoy. I was so excited that the series was back on track that I ended up reading this book from cover to cover in one sitting and no am sad as I have to wait for the author to write the next installment! If you haven't started this series you should and good news for the audiobook fans as most of the series is available via audiobook! You won't be sorry that you added this series to your TBR list, or rather MBR (must be read) list!!

Another good, quick, easy read. Very timely in that it delves into scams against the elderly and/or recently bereaved. A good reminder to be vigilant no matter one's age or situation!

Delightful addition to one of my favorites!

Every visit to South Cove draws me deeper into the lives of Jill and her friends. Memories and Murder is a wonderful addition to the Tourist Trap series. As intriguing, and usually surprising, as the mysteries are, it is the people of South Cove that leave me anxious for the next adventure. Jill is more than willing to leave the investigation of the newest murder in Greg's hands because she has enough to worry about with her aunt acting so strangely. Speaking of Greg, I love the relationship he and Jill have established.

A short, enjoyable cozy mystery. I've read some but not all the books in this series. So, I'm not familiar with some of the events referenced. But no matter, this can be read as a standalone. I enjoy the characters and the small town vibe. The mystery is quite light but still interesting.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book!

I was so glad to fall back into this series; despite having only read two of the other books this series is memorable and enjoyable. This was a very different taken on the characters though, with Jill's Aunt acting strangely and leaving us to wonder why. What is the connection with a character death offscreen? How does it all tie together? The fun was in detangling everything, and working out the motivations for the characters. As a very proficient author in this genre, Lynn does a fantastic job of delivering tidbits to keep the reader interested an turning pages!

Highly recommend both this author and series; she always seems to do something fresh and exciting within the genre. Five stars.

Jill Gardner is stunned when she learns her Aunt Jackie broke up with her fiance. He’s so devoted to her. It makes no sense, but Aunt Jackie isn’t talking. In fact, she’s acting quite strange. Jill is afraid her aunt might be ill.

Jill hosts a seminar about elder abuse at her bookshop. She’s really not all that interested in the topic until her she finds out her aunt has been getting mysterious calls which led to her break up. Her aunt is usually quite tough, but these calls have really broken her spirit.

As Jill looks into the calls, she learns her aunt is probably the victim of a scam. Then, a member of the Senior Project is murdered and Jill’s detective boyfriend is investigating. He warns her to stay away from this case, but Jill can’t help herself. Especially if her aunt is involved.

I always love my visits to South Cove, California. Jill is one of my favorite amateur sleuths. She and her boyfriend are the perfect detective team.

This book hooked me right from the start. The secondary characters are well-developed with Aunt Jackie being one of my favorites. These characters all feel like old friends.

This is the 10th book in the series. I was surprised to see I missed one in this series so I will have to correct that. The mystery is contained in each book so it’s probably not a necessity to read them in order but I think it’s more fun if you do so you can see Jill and Greg’s relationship grow.

Although I could see where the mystery was leading, I was totally shocked to see who was the mastermind behind the murder and scams. There, of course, are some red herrings tossed in but the author did a great job of keeping me guessing.

This is my favorite book in the series, so far. I’m definitely ready for the next one.

Jill isn't quite sure what to make of the speaker talking about elder abuse but knows that the subject is an important one. Her Aunt Jackie was scammed in the past and Jill wants to make sure she keeps up with what she can do to keep this from ever happening again. With her Aunt acting weird she knows that something is going on and can't help but worry. She soon learns that her Aunt has been receiving phone calls from her dead husband. Jill is sure it !just be a scam but her Aunt believes it is her husband. While investigating Jill ends up at the Senior Project, she wants to figure out if they have talked to her Aunt in the past and if her information could have been leaked from there. When a volunteer from the project ends up dead Jill is sure that the police are looking at the wrong suspect. She is determined to find another direction for them to look at. Follow along as Jill tries to figure out who is trying to scam her Aunt and also save an innocent woman from being arrested for murder. This was a great mystery read that had me looking left and right for not only a scammer but also a killer.

This is the first book in this series set in South Cove that I have read and I really enjoyed it. Jill owns a bookstore and coffee shop. She lives with her detective boyfriend, Greg, and gets mixed up in his cases. However, this time she also has her very own mystery concerning her aunt. I highly recommend this book. It kept my attention from beginning to end!

It is amazing anytime I read a cozy book that has food in it (a coffee shop, restaurant, baker, etc) that I don't gain 10 pounds just from reading all the delicious sound dishes.  Jill's coffee shop is no exception especially when it is Sadie making the brownies, cookies, and more.

I always enjoy journeying back to South Cove and seeing what is new with Jill, Jackie, Greg, and Amy.  This merry bunch of characters keeps me on my toes with their wit and pension to end up involved with the latest case in town.  Greg should be involved since he is a police detective, but the others?  Not so much.  I suppose Jill can't help it that the killer ends up in her sights, but not always on purpose.

This book deals with scams, especially on older citizens.  The author does a brilliant job of showcasing potential scams that might trap anyone that isn't aware or watching what is happening to them.  Or they prey on emotions as they did with Jackie.  While this is common in today's world (sadly), I liked the author's take on that possibility and was quite surprised when everything came to light and who was involved.  All I will say is that it is multiple people and at least one of them surprised me.

Sometimes I wish I had Jill's job....being able to read as much as she does but that is a perk (or a curse?) of owning a bookstore.

I am enjoying watching Greg and Jill's relationship continue to progress and maybe one day down the road there will be wedding bells.  Only time will tell!

We give this book 5 paws up.

I really enjoyed this book. I've enjoyed the entire series but this book is close to home. The problem of elderly abuse and scams/frauds is so prevalent today. To imagine the pain of thinking a lost one has returned or needs help. The book is fast paced and truly engrossing. I'm so glad that Jackie and Harold get back together. #MemoriesAndMurder #NetGalley

As I’ve stated in a previous review of this series, be sure to read Cahoon’s Dedication and Acknowledgements that are placed just before Chapter 1 of each book. I really liked the Dedication in this book. This is just after Cahoon names off several people to thank:
“…Thanks for teaching me that the most important factor in caring for people is not the rules but the implementation and delivery of the news.”

There was a lot going on in this one, including a possible scam, the walking dead, elderly abuse, mental abuse, manipulation, and love at the most unlikely time. Of course the usual homocide was included also, but my favorite thing about this was the love part. ❤️

Lynn Cahoon’s Tourist Trap Mystery series was the first cozy mystery series I fell in love with, so new visits to South Cove and Jill’s Coffee, Books & More are always top of my TBR list!

I love the protagonist Jill and her dog Emma – everyone should have a dog like Emma & she brings a lot of subtle humor & sweetness into the stories. Memories and Murder is a unique installment in this series in that, this time, Jill is (mostly) not investigating the same crime that her hunky detective boyfriend Greg is. She’s got her hands full trying to figure out who’s scamming Aunt Jackie, and I love seeing how her friends and employees band together to help out. That’s one of my favorite things about the whole series, honestly – the community Jill has built around her & they rally behind each other when needed. Family can definitely be what you make it, and Jill proves that over and over again. The fact that this community of main & supporting characters are all layered and thoroughly developed is icing on the cake.

Cahoon’s mysteries are always a reading adventure that ropes you in and doesn’t let go until whodunit – and why – is revealed. The dual mysteries unfolding in Memories and Murder are cleverly-plotted (as expected – this is Lynn Cahoon, after all) with some unexpected twists and turns that keep you on your reading toes. I wasn’t sure if they were connected or not – nor how many other mysteries might pop up before the end of the book.

Bottom Line: A visit to South Cove & Lynn Cahoon’s delightful Tourist Trap mysteries is always a good idea. Memories and Murder is no exception. The two concurrent mysteries in this book are equally intriguing, and I loved trying to figure out who was behind them. Cahoon excels at characters and setting, as well as plot, and Memories and Murder is a prime example. A great choice for this weekend’s reading list!!

Memories and Murder by Lynn Cahoon is the tenth A Tourist Trap Mystery. Jill Gardner owns Coffee, Books and More in South Cove, California where she is currently worried about her Aunt Jackie. Jackie suddenly called off her engagement to Harrold Snider and refuses to explain why. After a little coaxing from Jill, Jackie confesses that she has been getting some disturbing calls. If the identity of this individual is correct, then Jackie could not marry Harrold. Jill had just heard a lecture about elder fraud, and she believes someone is targeting her aunt. Jill contacts her boyfriend, Detective Greg King so they can look into the matter. Unfortunately, a volunteer at the Senior Project is murdered that evening which becomes Greg’s priority. Jill is not one to standby, so she begins to do some sleuthing on her own. Memories and Murder can be read as a standalone for those new to the series. The author provides the necessary background information on the main characters. Memories and Murder is easy to read thanks to the author’s conversational writing style and smooth flow of the story. The mystery was different because it addresses the issue of elder fraud. People, unfortunately, try to take advantage of those who are not as technologically savvy and who are more trusting. Jackie is lucky that she has Jill and such caring friends. Jill is positive that someone is taking advantage of Jackie and she begins going research online as well as talking to some people in town. Jill got lucky when people approached her with information because they had heard of Jackie’s predicament. I would have liked some more active sleuthing on Jill’s part. I enjoyed Deek’s participation and how he added to the case. Deek is a hard worker and a good addition to Jill’s business. I like how everything tied together to provide a satisfying conclusion. I am curious about Jill’s decisions making regarding Coffee, Books and More. Deek will ask to add a book group, and Jill tells him to check with Aunt Jackie since it will happen in the evenings when she works. Since Jill owns the business, I feel she should make the decision. I just found it odd and unfair to Deek since Aunt Jackie is not his biggest fan (yet). There are plenty of cozy moments with Jill enjoying endless cups of coffee, indulging in Sadie’s confections, taking Emma for runs, helping Amy work on her wedding including a disastrous crafting session, time with Greg, talking with new hire Deek, and reading advance reader copies that have been sent to the store. Memories and Murder is a comfortable cozy mystery with curious calls, a mysterious murder, copious quantities of coffee, plentiful pastries, wedding work, a cute canine, and a busy boyfriend.

Review:

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and she has created a setting, South Cove, California, that I would like to visit. It would be so great to be able to go into Coffee, Books and More, grab a drink and pastry, and visit with everybody.

The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional. Anytime I get to spend time with Jill, Greg, and the rest of the gang is time well spent. In this book,we got to learn a little bit more about Aunt Jackie’s life and it made her seem more vulnerable and human.

The mystery was well plotted and carried on well throughout the entire book. There were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider and was not easily solved. I was pretty sure I knew who the culprit was, but I was only partially right.

I would highly recommend this book (and series) to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. In my opinion, the books just keep getting better.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

This is the tenth full length story with several novellas along the way, and it is still going strong. I really enjoyed this outing of The Tourist Trap Mysteries. When Aunt Jackie calls off her engagement to Harrold and starts acting out of character, Jill Gardner has to ramp up her investigating. She is on the trail of a mysterious caller who is targeting her Aunt Jackie. He is playing on her love for her deceased husband, but claiming he is Ted, and that he is not dead, but in witness protection. There is also a dead body that Greg is investigating, but it doesn't take long to determine that these two things are somehow connected. Can Jill figure out what is going on in time to salvage Jackie's and Harrold's engagement?

I enjoy this series for so many reasons. Lynn Cahoon has a wonderful writing style, great well-developed main characters and strong secondary characters, and a great setting with both the town of South Cove, California and the coffee shop/bookstore, Coffee Books and More. The plot is well written with the reader feeling like they are right there solving the mystery with Jill and Greg. I like the romance between Jill and Greg as well. They are a great couple who have a lot in common and really support one another. Greg is the lead detective in town, yet understands Jill's desire to help others. Although he does not share information with her per se, he does not block her or intimidate her while she is sleuthing. This book is fast-paced, with a lot happening. Several storylines come together as the crime is investigated and it becomes obvious that both of the major crimes in this story are related. I did figure out some of what was happening before the final reveal, but the major culprit was not obvious to me until the author basically gave up a huge clue. The showdown was exciting and I was thrilled at the ending of this story. Once again, Lynn Cahoon has penned a wonderful story that I recommend to all cozy mystery lovers. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

Memories and Murder earns 5/5 Cups and Treats...Engaging Entertainment!

Excellent! I am a recent convert to Lynn Cahoon’s Tourist Trap series and holiday novellas, and as a newly christened senior citizen, I can attest to the countless phone calls with too-good-to-be-true offers or “call us immediately” threats. This very contemporary theme kept me totally engaged and enjoying a bit of vicarious karma. Our heroine, Jill Gardner, worries about her Aunt Jackie, who has been struggling lately after calling off her engagement. She hasn’t explained what happened, not even the future groom knows what he did, and when asked, Aunt Jackie reminds Jill it is none of her business. Jill knows something’s wrong, but didn’t expect “something” unbelievable.

Lynn Cahoon’s writing style is very entertaining with descriptive language and dialogue that illustrates the small town setting and various characters along with tone, emotions, and personalities. Jill, with realistic reasoning and responses and collaborative nature with law enforcement (The deputy IS her boyfriend.), gets involved in another murder. As city council liaison, Jill arranged for a guest speaker from the Senior Project, an advocacy group to protect seniors from scammer, frauds, and abusers. Paula Woods has made elder abuse her cause since her grandmother had once been a victim of a scam. But, it’s Paula’s boyfriend, also a volunteer at the Senior Project, who ends up dead. Is it their relationship or the job that is a motive for murder?

The story was very engaging with the right amount of personal peril, but it’s the characters that drive the story for me. All in all a great book and emphasizing the scams seniors can be faced creates a chilling tale! Bonus! Lynn tweaked a recipe to get “the perfect cookie” for readers to enjoy. Try her recipe for Easy Almond Cookies for you holiday cookie exchange.

This is the first full-length Tourist Trap mystery in a while and I couldn't have enjoyed it more. I find this series highly entertaining and when I start a new book I always know that I am going to lose myself in the story and enjoy my return visit to South Cove. Ms. Cahoon has done a wonderful job of creating a series that hits all the high points I look for in a cozy mystery series. Jill, Gregg, Aunt Jackie, Harold and the rest of the cast of characters are well defined, rich, and three dimensional and after so many stories, this author keeps peeling back the layers and introducing us to new dimension within their personalities. The setting is idyllic and one of my favorite themes - bookstore owner. The mystery is solid and the author does a good job of laying out the clues along the way. Sadly, I missed some of them and was surprised (in a good way) by the identity of the killer.

I love how Ms. Cahoon continues to evolve her characters, growing them and revealing more layers and vulnerabilities which endear them and this series to me. I am looking forward to many more books in the series.

Memories and Murder by Lynn Cahoon is the tenth book in Tourist Trap Mystery series but can be read as a standalone.

This is the first book that I have read in this series and I had no problem following the story.

Jill Gardner runs a book and coffee store with her aunt Jackie, who has all of a sudden broken her engagement with a great guy. After much hoaxing aunt Jackie admits that she has been getting calls from her husband, who has been dead for a long time.
Jill gets her boyfriend Greg, is the police chief in their lovely beach side town, to investigate. Then there is a murder of an acquaintance's boyfriend that has everyone baffled.
Main protagonist with the help of her friends and her boyfriend can't help but get involved to solve this puzzle.

I liked this book, it is easy to read and the story flows nicely. Many charming protagonists, with the beautiful setting and adorable dog.
However, I didn't get the impression that main protagonist did any sleuthing at all. She had ceaseless cups of coffee and great food, did at lot of reading but investigated very little in my opinion. Most of the information she got from other people but without her asking question, as is the usual way sleuths obtain information.

Regardless, it was light and entertaining and I got to know a lovely town with likable characters that I will go back to.

I received arc copy from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Another fantastic visit to South Cove, with Jill, Jackie and the rest of the gang. This series is one of the few that for me seem so real and like I could go visit and be friends with these characters. They are just easy reads that I enjoy immensely. The mystery in this book was very good and kept me guessing. I had a few suspects for a lot of the book. I just really enjoyed this book. Can.t wait for my next South Cove visit!

There are some things I really love about this series, and all of them were on display in Memories and Murder. I love that the books are light and quick and fun, but the puzzle is interesting and the crimes are believable. I like the realistic evolution of the characters’ relationships, and how much I’ve become acquainted with and invested in some of the secondary characters.. That’s particularly true of Aunt Jackie, and this book revolves around her in a way that none of the previous books have, at least to this extent.

And of course, I enjoy the main character(s): Jill with her mind that just can’t stop trying to figure things out, and Greg with his devotion to justice and Jill. I love the way Greg tries to keep Jill from investigating, and she tries to comply… but she can’t remain uninvolved, and he knows that and doesn’t hold it against her. This is a series where the relationship between the amateur (Jill) and the professional (Greg, a policeman) really works, in a way that it doesn’t in some cozy mystery series.

There are two simultaneous mysteries in this novel: What’s up with the calls Aunt Jackie is getting from someone who claims to be her deceased husband? And who killed the computer expert affiliated with a local organization that tries to help seniors protect themselves from financial fraud and abuse? (And a third question: Is there any connection between the two mysteries?) Jill tries to focus on Aunt Jackie’s woes while Greg works on the murder, but inevitably they end up helping each other out.

I hope Ms. Cahoon intends to go on writing this series, because I want more of these characters and the town and denizens of South Cove.

Two mysteries and a murder. The question is can Jill Gardner stop her Aunt Jackie from making a terrible mistake before she loses money and so much more. It doesn't help that Jackie is keeping tight-lipped about what is happening. Her investigating is keeping her so busy she almost doesn't have time to snoop around in a murder investigation until she fears that an innocent person is going to be charged.

I enjoyed a lot about this story. The plot is engaging and the realistic characters are people I would like to get to know better. The story also does an excellent job of shining a light on scams focused on cheating elders.

Thanks to Lyrical Underground and NetGalley for an ARC. The opinions expressed are my own.
