The title of this book led me to expect a story about a family who prayed—and it is that. But even more, it’s about a family who learned to forgive one another through prayer.

At first, I found myself angry. I felt the mother should have left the father long before the domestic violence escalated. Then I remembered—my own grandmother and mother never left their marriages either.

As I kept reading, I struggled with the picture of forgiveness the book presented. My first thought was, That’s not how forgiveness works in real life. But then I realized—the forgiveness shown here is the very kind God gives us by His grace. Jesus, the Son of God, was killed for my sins and yours. Yet God chose to love us anyway. When we repent and believe in Jesus Christ, God not only forgives our sins—He chooses to remember them no more.

I wish I could say I had forgiven my father and grandfather before they died, as the characters in the story did. But I didn’t. Even so, this book reminded me of the truth in Romans 5:8—that “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” and in Acts 26:17–18, that God calls us from darkness to light. Love, as 1 Corinthians 13:7 says, “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

Serenity Sharp is having a normal day when she hears horrifying news: her beloved daughter Olivia-Mary’s school is on lockdown due to a school shooting, and three students have been killed - and they don’t know which ones. Sick with grief, Serenity looks back to her troubled childhood and finds solace in Intercessory prayer. Important characters are her mother, a strong woman who fiercely believed in God, and battled cancer in order to stay with her two children, as well as her older brother, Jeremiah, who she always looked up to, and who was willing to protect her from anything and anyone. As always, Christianity and God play an important role in this novel, as the characters find strength through prayer and faith.

This book was absolutely amazing! Sarah Ashlyn merges faith and tragedy in order to weave a spell-bounding story that will stay in your heart long after you’ve finished reading.

A touching story

This was a new to me author. I chose this book because of the topic of prayer. I think it was an amazing and very sad story. But God....
I found times when I was distracted by typos but overall I enjoyed reading this book and will look for more.
