Control your thoughts and your emotions will follow

A very inspiring book about controlling or mastering your thoughts and how that can change your life. By using some of the techniques in the book, I quickly found that I could replace troubling thoughts with a more positive mindset and that had great benefits in feeling happier and more content despite hard circumstances.

As a therapist and author myself, I am always reading in the niches of therapy, NLP, Neuroscience, Psychology and Self-Help. I believe our journey of learning and personal development is a lifelong one. As my work is so acutely involved with helping people to understand how their thoughts impact their world view, naturally a title like ‘Empower Your Thoughts: Control Worry and Anxiety, Develop a Positive Mental Attitude, and Master Your Mindset’ grabbed my attention. When I saw that it was by Scott Allan, the decision to hit the ‘buy’ button was easy, as I have read several of this author’s books and they are all excellent. You know you are in for a good, well written, well-researched and insightful read when you pick up one of his books.

The book is divided into 5 Parts, starting with ‘Four Life Lessons My Father Taught Me About Empowering Thought’. I liked the fact that these lessons made such an impact on the author that he internalized them and then shared them with us in this book. These 4 lessons are still highly relevant in today’s modern world! If you want to know what these little gems are, you’ll have to buy the book but I promise you, they are simple, honest, and easy for anyone to understand and implement.

Each part is broken into chapters, and each chapter takes you further along on your journey to mastering and empowering your thoughts, whilst blasting all the obstacles out of your way. Here are just a few of them to give you an idea:

Guiding Thought and Empowering Mindfulness
The Impact of Bad Thinking and Creating Peace of Mind
Develop a Positive Mental Attitude
The Traits of a Positive Mindset
Your Attitude Toward Past and Future Events
Your Attitude Toward Other People
People, Places, and Events That Challenge Your Positive Attitude
Strategies to Build Your Positive Attitude
The Positive Impact of Words and Affirmations
Harnessing thought and Mastering Emotion
Develop the Habit of Intentional Thinking
Internal Communication and The Language of Thought
Destroy Your Distractions
Retrain Your Brain

With this book, you really get a road map to understanding how your mind works, and strategies, tips and tricks all through the book on how to make little changes that will lead to big results. It’s full of simple advice that, when you think about it, makes total sense, eg:

‘Thinking creates emotions. It creates responses and is responsible for your kingdom of the mind. People who thrive in a successful environment have arrived there because they have powerful thoughts that guide them every step of the way.’

It’s also important to know that the author is never condescending or ‘holier-than-thou’. You know when you read it that you are dealing with a real, flawed human being who has made his fair share of mistakes (haven’t we all?) and who has put the strategies he writes about into practice in his own life. And if he can do it, so can we all. I will definitely be recommending this book to my clients.

I found this book supportive in improving the quality of my thoughts. It provided inspiration and tips for getting my thoughts (and actions) onto a more positive trajectory.

Scott Allan described himself as a pretty disempowered kid. He did poorly in academics when he was at school, and he was convinced her would be a failure in life too. Luckily he had a father who was into self-improvement and reading, and who provided him with encouragement. It sounds as if more than a little of the advice in this book harks back to Allan's father's advice.

Some points that jumped out for me:

* Negative thinking doesn't just happen without your permission.

* If you want to be free, set your own goals in life and draft a plan. Your thoughts will form a natural channel of continuity to ensure you get there.

* Constantly think of ways to boost quality -- in your own life, your family's life, your work.

* The winning strategy is this: NEVER SETTLE.

The book contains a nice balance between direct and indirect strategies. What I mean by direct strategies are actions we take to move things forward. I define indirect strategies as practices like meditation and visualization, which promote a healthy mental and emotional environment that facilitates constructive action.

This book provides an excellent road map to a more rewarding life.

Empower Your Thoughts by Scott Allan helps you develop the strategy for mastering your thoughts resulting in positive, healthy, productive thinking. It reminds me to take ownership of my thoughts and harness that energy for purposeful activity instead of a random or reactive response.

One powerful take away was deliberately focusing on my thoughts as a way to identify personal choices for decision making. It empowers me to choose what I really want instead of passively reacting through random thoughts.

Another key takeaway for me was the idea of organizing our inward energy, our thought life, resulting in effective concentration. With so many competing interests not only inwardly in the mind but outwardly through environment, this suggests that highly focused concentration can be achieved through the tools in this book.

In short, Empower Your Thoughts by Scott Allan restores personal ownership and the power to enjoy life through mastery of thoughts and choices.

There are so many books like this out there, you may wonder......why should I grab this one? Well, there a some gems in here I have not seen anywhere else.

A perfect example is the author's chapter on Destroy Fear with Confident Action. He puts the pillar right in front of you, doesn't belabor the point, and then shows you action steps to implement.

The great thing for me was this was exactly what I needed to read today for some action I wanted to take but was hesitant to do......until I read it in this book. Go! Take action now! It is the only way to move forward!

I found Scott Allan's writing accessible and easy to understand. Most of all I appreciated the personal style he used when describing the life lessons he learned from his father and the examples he gave about how to apply them to everyday life. This is a motivational book about the importance of mindset and its power to either positively or negatively influence the course of your life.

Great stuff!

I read both of his books in this series in the last three hours. Wow, great motivators/page turners he did write here, I tell you. He has a philosophy that harmonizes with mine, right down to attitudes about failure and success. The first book was good, but the second "hit me between the eyes" well. I'll give five stars to both books, but this is my review for both.
