An enemy with otherworldly powers. A war fueled by insatiable bloodlust. No one will be spared.

Following their first victory against a rogue unit of Repub Marines, Magnus finds his newly trained gladias pinned down by a squadron of Talons. But when he discovers that their prisoners may hold critical answers to bringing down the enemy, Magnus must stop at nothing to get his team to safety and interrogate the enemy combatants.

Once aboard their new Novian starship, however, Magnus isn’t prepared for the intel he uncovers. The enemy’s power is growing stronger by the day, and their claws have found their way into his own team members.

Forced across the void horizon into his home universe, Magnus must search to find Awen’s mentor and famed Elder of the Luma, Willowood. But finding the old woman before the enemy unleashes the next stage of its plans could mean the end of Magnus’s fledgling resistance.

“Dominate! Liberate!”
Wow! This has been a complex, intriguing, complicated, emotional and very, very intense premise! It took me to a whole new level of feelings.
A new look, infinite changes, new alliances, darker threats..an unsuspecting turn of events..this instalment marks an in-depth, a thoughtful desire to bring forward a different way of existence. Thoroughly intense, dynamic, passionate and thrilling! The other worldly powers that Awen and Piper wield are astounding and reverential, holy mystics, I’m totally wowed by them! The world building is superb, with admirable characters. A magnificent turnout, with daunting prospects. I had to stop reading a few times, to reload and digest all the nerve wrecking, edge of seat scenes! I just didn’t want the story to end. Lol. So eager to read Black Labyrinth #5!

What a let down!!!...Horrible book...just a repeat of every previous idea lumped together...and the attempt at making the main characters darker, and twisting the plot by the obvious device of corrupting Piper, not only falls totally flat, but also ruins the previous books storyline. I think they ran out of ideas and just jumped into soap opera politics. How can you stoop so low as to have a child run your storyline and adults around like she has a ring in their noses???...absolute rubbish compared to the previous books.

Will not be reading the rest of the series due to this blunder of a book. And just to add, there are now way too many characters who have not been fleshed out.

Kind of...sucks. Don't get me wrong. There are some terrific battle scenes. The reality is that there are some terrible plot accelerators. Mainly, Piper. Magnus, et al., do a great job at everything except understanding Piper. And they know she is super powerful, so the fact that she is largely ignored is ludacrace.

Also, the fact that this is, in so many ways, so very close to Star Wars, should concern both the authors and the publishers.

Getting better as the series progresses

Highly entertaining, fact paced, action packed
Do not read this as a one off, start from book 1, as each book is very much a continuation of the previous one
This time round things look to be going well for the rebels, yet surprises towards the end thwart them. No spoilers, but this really does set the tone for what o expect to be an excellent next few books

Book 4 picks up immediately after the end of Book 3, with Magnus and his new Granther Company of Gladius Umbria having just defeated the Paragon forces on Ithnor Ithelia and now trying to make it back to the Spire before a group of Talon fighters descends on their position.
However, the squad doesn’t make it far and find themselves trapped on the planet by the Talons.
With Nos Kil as a prisoner, Magnus, Awen and the Gladio are forced to take refuge as Azelon and TO-96 are forced to use the resources of the Spire to fend off the attack.
Once back aboard the Spire, the team are faced with some difficult decisions, first and foremost, how they are going to treat prisoners of war. Initially, Magnus wants to go after Nos Kil, treating him the same way that the Republic has always treated enemy combatants, and especially something as vile as Nos Kil. But Awen is quick to remind him that the Gladio Umbra stand for something better, and that if the Galaxy is going to be something better, then this is the time to start being different. It is a pivotal moment in the story, as we see not just Magnus, but his command team of Abimbola, as well as Rohoar all take notice of the decision.
Thinking they had more time, the Gladio Umbra are forced to return to their own galaxy, to the home of the Luma, in search of Awen’s former Teacher, Willowood.
As the team prepares though, for what they hope will be a quick recon and rescue mission to the surface of Worru, something unfolds aboard the Spire that will shatter all they have begun to build.
It is amazing that four books in, this series continues to get better with every book. The Authors continue to create this tension amongst the team, that you can feel as they are struggling to deal with every decision they have to make, knowing that time is so short. The more time they spend, the more time that Moldark has to push his plans on the galaxy, and at this stage, they don’t really understand what his end game is. Further to this, So-Elku has Willowood, and there is a lack of understanding as to his motives as well. He also has the tome that he took from the Novia Minoosh, something that is weighing heavily on Awen.
The character work continues to be exceptional in this book, we see Magnus grow further as the leader he is, as he must lead his band of Gladio. Whilst he has always been the leader of his squad, he has had to take on a new role now, a more strategic role. It is also interesting watching the personal relationships between both him and Valerie and him and Awen. Awen is another outstanding character, as she seeks to understand her place in the Unity, become a teacher to Piper, as well as continue her role as Diplomat, not just for the group, but within the group as well. Awen believes in peace before all else, and as she tries to look towards a new Galaxy for everyone, she works hard at trying to get everyone to try a peaceful solution first, rather than just kill first, ask questions later. It is surprising when she gains so much support from the Gladio, especially the Jujari. As we learn more about each of the characters, it is the Jujari, especially Rohoar, that we perhaps learn the most about, making this book a really fascinating insight into the canine species.
The world building also continues to astound, with the in-depth descriptions of locations, warships and combat all bringing the story to life in incredible, at times graphic, but captivating, and engaging detail.
If you have been enjoying this series, Void Horizon is another thrill-ride, but one that continues to develop the characters and storyline as we move along this epic story – if you love Mil Sci-Fi – this is NOT to be missed!!

Why why why is there always some annoying little special kid in all of these space combat/magic sci fi books.

It's like they write them all the same always some little girl with amazing powers to save the galaxy and you have to sit through pages of childish rubbish or listen in my case.

You know exactly what will happen in most cases from book one and have to go through this long drawn out drama with a child's stupid thoughts and misunderstood by the adults in the story numerous blundering chances where any normal person would sort out the problems straight away yet they are missed and it all goes out of control.

Its so annoying I have to skip whole chapters of this rubbish in books.

Starcaster series, Galaxys edge, Ruins of the galaxy. All have a special little girl and its infuriating they are also very unlikeable characters also and I find myself wishing they would get killed off or if the book continues I actually want the bad guys to use the child as they want and kill everyone because you just get tired of it.

Can these authors not make a more adult series where the problems and fights are done by adults and not children.

Also on audible you look to get value for your credits so you look at the run time and these ruins of the galaxy books have like an hour and 30 mins of the author talking rubbish at the end of every book, If the authors feel the need to spout rubbish to all their fans and talk about their inspiration for the books can they not release a podcast or a authors thoughts book? instead of bolstering their runtime on sites like audible so it looks like you are getting a decent amount of book instead of barely 7 hours.. so so so annoying this author is particularly bad. Least galaxy's edge only had like 30mins of this rubbish...

I listen to these series at work every day so I go through alot of these type of series please write a series with no children in it I love space opera's this story is not bad and if you miss a load of it you can catch up easy.

Too much Americanisms in alot of it with people shouting various terms in battle that make you cringe every time.

Anyway over all its fine to pass the time for me when I am at work but this series is quite predictable which is good if you want certain bits you have guessed to come true in it but bad if you know half the series is going to be rubbish trying to make you care for a child that is literally the most unlikeable character in the series.

Joshua dalzelle black fleet series pretty good as no children involved.

Bit of a rant but this is like an inferior galaxy's edge.

I'd equate the reading of this book to seeing a good Marvel Universe movie. It is best read (seen) in order but is easily digestible and packed with action. If you enjoy mostly intelligent sci-fi combined with military themes and fun characters with snappy dialog, then this may be in your wheelhouse.I'm looking forward to book 5 so Chaney must be doing something right!

Mr. Hopper and Mr. Chaney, you do not know how to end a book. Seriously, that was an ending?

Even with the losses and reversals of fortunes, this continues to be a fantastic story. Character development just gets deeper and the action is fabulous. And of course RC Bray, well, there's that.

I like this series. It has some wonderful characters, the good guys, and some horrible characters, the bad guys. There’s no confusing the two, except when some of the good guys don’t know who they are working for!

Our band of good guys have grouped together and have just won a small skirmish on planet Ithnor Ithelia, which is in the meta-verse far from the normal universe. They had defeated a detachment of Recon Marines in a bloody battle. They thought that now they would have some time to sit down and think of what else they needed to do back home. But, Moldark didn’t give them that time, at least not right away. While their recent battle had been on the ground, now, the space around Ithnor Ithelia was full of starfighters and a heavy cruiser. They had followed Ambiola and Rohoar’s ship and now were preparing to attack the Novia Minoosh starship Spire.

Magnus and his combat warriors were still on the surface awaiting lift-off of their shuttles. What they didn’t want was for the shuttles to get half-way to the Spire and then be attacked by the Republic starfighters. Still, Magnus wanted to be where the fighting was happening so he needed to get the shuttles launched. But, Azelon, the AI running the Spire did not agree with Magnus and made it so the shuttles couldn’t take off. She was quite capable of defending the Spire and would only be distracted if she had to help the shuttles at the same time.

Magnus had no idea if the Spire even had any offensive weapons or what kind of defenses the starship could employ. It turns out that he shouldn’t have been worried since the Spire quickly and easily defeated all the starfighters and even destroyed the heavy cruiser using their own missiles against them! Actually, one starfighter did survive although the did crash on Ithnor Ithelia only to be captured by Magnus and his warriors. Commander Ricio Longo had been working under orders directly from Moldark to find and destroy everything he encountered on and over the planet. Since he was now a captive, that wasn’t going to happen. Additionally, Magnus’s forces had captured one of the Recon Marines, Nos Kil, who had a bad history with Magnus. This guy was a very evil man and was supposed to be spending his life securely locked away in a military prison. Why he was out and operating with the Recon Marines was a mystery to Magnus.

Nos Kil will become responsible for turning Piper against Magnus. He’ll tell Piper a bunch of dreadful lies which Piper won’t have the sense to believe are lies coming from this vile man. Something also happens during the battle at Worru which is even worse and further separates Piper even from Awen. This becomes the dark part of the story and it will be interesting to see how it ends.

I know there is another book either coming or already out. I plan to read it as soon as I can.

Well written and paced, but I had some issues with the characters in this one. There will be spoilers, so everything following a conditional "If you liked it so far you'll probably like this too" will be a rant about some stuff that would ruin it for you. I actually dropped this down a star since it pissed me off so much.

HERE BE SPOILERS (but I need to rant, so allons-y).

One of the things that drives me nuts in any story/movie is when the protagonists are too stupid/soft to remove threats when they have the chance. Magnus upon capturing Nos Kil should have capped him as soon as he'd used the MIND-READING mystics on board to plunder any useful intel from him. Instead, he allowed himself to be goaded into a perfectly predictable and avoidable fight that he lost, only being saved from a mortal wound at the last second by one of the aforementioned psychics.

Kill him now you say? No. THIS MAKES NO SENSE and leads to dire and eminently avoidable consequences later. After all of that, Magnus tries again: the definition of insanity is said to be doing something again and expecting a different result. Magnus should be removed from command as he is incompetent, but only because he is rather miraculously still alive when he really shouldn't be.

Even better, Piper had a near-worshipful attachment to Magnus, yet somehow is convinced by the first person who comes along, a mortal enemy* of her hero no less, that Magnus is a murdering child molestor (*in fact the one who did the things he accuses Magnus of). I will also suggest that if you're planning a major op and your major "weapon" is a 9-yr-old super psyker who has a sudden and disturbing personality shift, resolving this is mission-critical (see removal for incompetence above). An analogy is your CAS drivers suddenly acting hostile and evasive toward the force commander. I won't even get into Awen's decision about her nemesis when she had had him at her mercy.

I'm doing the math on the protagonists chances, and with the loss and corruption of Piper they are boned. I have to assume we're being set up for big moves in the next book, but the authors will need to dance pretty fast to dig this one out. It's not often I get this incensed about a book I otherwise liked, but this one contorted itself too much in pursuit of drama when there was already plenty to be found in the plot.

First Book I Dislike

This book reminds me of Star Wars. Yonug Anikin becomes Vader. One of the main characters gets subverted by a ruthless thug in their first contact, refuses to talk with someone she cares for, who the thug lied about. She then sees her mother killed when she is pushed out of the way of a rocket into blaster fire. The child only sees the push and not the hit Magnus takes and blames Magnus the good guy who now is the bad guy. Thechild disappears, leaving her mentor and grandmother, becoming friends with her mentor's arch enemy. This book in the series ruined the whole series. Don't know how the author plans to bring about reconciliation of the characters, not going to find out, going to start a different series .

Found and lost.

The Galla Umbra have defeated the squad of marines sent to steal from the planet. One, Nos Kil is captured iso killed and proves to be a snake in the grass. The viper squadron and cruiser sent to retrieve the marines cause consternation. There is still a lot to be done and Magnus isn’t sure if they’ll get past the navy. Neither does he know the heartbreak ahead of him.

Void Horizon. J.N. Chaney

Even though this novel is set well into the future, the motives, ambitions always remain the same. The struggle for Power, dominance and people of different origins, species who will fight for freedom and injustice. Whatever the cost. This is an excellent read! My highest recommendation.

Sooo Good

Not meaning to beat a dead horse... this series is awesome. Ever unfolding and intriguing storyline, you can’t help but feel like you are there. Subplots and twists aren’t just stuck in along the way but have been building until the right time to spring them on the reader.

Another great book in the Ruins saga!

This is easily the best book, so far, in a series of great books. This installment of the series takes the characters in some interesting directions.

I love the way the characters are evolving.

This is my least favorite book in this series so far. The entire story line centered on Piper believing horrible things that Nos Kil told her about Magnus. The manipulation of a child seems to be a very weak way to move the story along.

Devastation in this book. Heartbreak and profound sadness.

Some characters are lost to us, this book has great sadness. Miscommunication, misunderstanding just unfortunate decisions made. Deeply saddened, hoping things look up in next book.
