AKA Simon Lee #2

Guardian Eagle

Rate this book
When he faked his death, that was supposed to be the end of it. No more Phantom Thief. No more Guardian Eagle. No more Program. That is until Lee comes into possession of a thumb drive holding vital information. Now he has no choice but to do one last mission for the Program.

What was supposed to be a simple intel drop, turns to a deadly meeting when Underground agents show up in search of the drive. Pulled back into the world he’d thought he’d left behind, Lee must find a way to get the thumb drive into the right hands. All the while keeping himself and those around him safe. It won’t be easy, especially when another group of unknown agents shows up, knowing more about Lee than they should. Whoever said thumb drives couldn’t be life or death?

It’s a new year, with new players, but the game's the same.

5 stars & 5/10 hearts. I enjoyed this one even more than “Phantom Thief.” In the first place, I like that Lee was more aware of his actions and desirous of doing well, and that Winfield was encouraging him to do so. Their banter was pretty amazing, too, and I loved how their relationship became better and stronger. As before, Lee is rather disrespectful to his father, but in this book the father assumes the father role much more, and they do discuss how they love each other, and the estrangement is over; however, because of the backstory and circumstances, there’s still some difficulties/tension. It’s almost like sarcasm and disrespect of each other is their love language. So I don’t condone it, but I understand it, though because of this I recommend the book for kids older than 16, or at least mature/steady enough not to be influenced by Lee. The only other thing that bugged me was a comment from Lee that I found a little inappropriate, and some euphemisms. Negatives aside, here’s why I loved the book! As I said, the relationship between Winfield and Lee was better, and I liked Winfield A LOT. I feel so sorry for him—he had a tough life! And as I said, I love that both he and Lee make it obvious that they love each other and really care what happens to each other even if they don’t show it. Also, a lot more was revealed about Lee and Winfield in this book, and the writing was much more polished. And the plot was intense! I enjoyed seeing Davis and Smith again. This story wrapped up a lot of confusing elements while leaving me completely hooked for more explanations. As I said, I think Lee grew in this book, and that while he still fell into bad actions, he really did want to do good, and get to know God. I’m eager to see how his arc will develop further! And as always… the humour is ON POINT. I quoted so much of it to my sister as I read. XD

A Favourite Humorous Quote: “‘As much as I’d love to stick around and chat, I’ve got to get going,’ Lee said, edging closer to the side of the roof.
“‘You’re not going anywhere!’ the guard hissed. ‘Where’s your partner that attacked me? You’re obviously not strong enough to have done it.’
Ouch! Now that was just rude. Lee thought about saying something, but decided he’d rather escape than scold the guard over his manners.”

*I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for my honest review. A positive review was not required. These are my honest thoughts & opinions.*

Hold onto your seats.
Literally.
You'd think after faking your own death, you could sit back and relax for a bit. Nope! Not in the slightest. Lee's back in the game, but this time he has to work with a certain someone and against certain somebodies that could spell seriously trouble for this genius boy. Prepare to gasp and have your jaw hang open, cause every chapter just keeps getting better.
Simon Lee is now Guardian Eagle.

I enjoyed the first "AKA Simon Lee" a great deal- along with its Christmas short- and this sequel is just as good. I love Simon Lee's gifts of perceptiveness and genius, even if these gifts are tried and found fallible at times. Even more, though, I love the very unusual relationship between him and his ex-CIA father. This book had great action sequences, clever escapes, and a plot that will keep you hooked to the very end. But it's so different from other books in the genre with our protagonists being a teenage boy and his father reconnecting as they decide how best to put part of their past behind them figure out what to do with the future.

I received a copy of this book from the author, and the views and opinions are my own.

I can't believe I read this book in one day. But then again, that's just what I've come to expect from this series - books which you simply CAN'T put down.
Guardian Eagle kept me on the edge of my seat from first to last. This one was different to the ones before in that Lee was working closely with his dad, and they were helping each other. I loved seeing them together like that. Some of the scenes were really sweet, and they made it clear that despite their constant banter, they really do love each other. And on that note, Lee really isn't disrespectful to his father, even though it comes across that way at first. That's just the way he is, and neither he nor his dad actually view it as being rude, particularly as almost all of the time they're just joking/teasing each other. So that really doesn't bother me at all.
There are still several lies told, but I'm glad to see Lee start to question whether or not this is right to do, and trying to avoid it as much as he can.
I really enjoyed seeing some of the characters from Phantom Thief again, and a couple from Nicholas Bishop. And most especially, I was so glad to get some real backstory at last, and the answers to many of the questions I had.
The epilogue this time, while not exactly a cliffhanger, was more than enough to make me start the next book straight away, despite having told myself I wouldn't read more than one at a time... And from then on, I just kept going. Because, after reading Guardian Eagle, it's almost impossible to stop.

Note: I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Recommended Reading Order for the Simon Lee Universe books (SLU):
Note: This is the order I've put together after reading and rereading almost all of these books, sometimes at once. While there are different opinions on which series should be read first, this is the order I personally feel is best for a first-time reader. It is NOT the chronological order - and I strongly recommend that a first-time reader does NOT read these books in chronological order. That's great for rereads, but the most will be got out of the SLU books by reading them loosely in the following order

Phantom Thief
Nicholas Bishop
Gregory's Epilogue (blog short)
Christmas Hostage
Guardian Eagle

This series is quickly joining the ranks of my very top favorites! <3 I'm sort of in awe of the author's ability to continue deepening previous motivations and pull on threads of previous stories while weaving in new elements that aren't contradictory at all but still have me wondering just how far reaching some of these elements are... And keeping up the air of lingering mystery while still bringing the main storyline to a satisfying conclusion--well, let's just say, I'm beyond eager to see where this all goes.

But more than anything else, it's the characters that make the story for me. Lee is just--*looks around helplessly for words* His sarcasm and snark are just delicious, especially when aimed at the bad guys, and I love his coolness under pressure and the way he can pretty much manage to get himself out of any situation. Seriously, if I ever have to break out of somewhere (or into somewhere...) I want this kid on my team! XD But then there are those moments when we get a glimpse into the real heart beneath the smart and independent facade, and I literally have to catch my breath at the emotions it stirs. In this one especially, his struggle between wanting to be independent but not wanting to be alone was so well done and believable! And the father-son dynamic, especially their protectiveness in the face of danger--in spite of all the secrets still lurking between them, this relationship is just so wonderful! One certain conversation just about had me in tears... <3<\3<3 And it's all done with such an exquisite light touch that I just have to shake my head in amazement.

The Christian themes weren't heavy in this story, but they were definitely there, and I appreciated the honest struggle with hard questions about deception for a good cause and how coming to Christ doesn't promise an easy road. I can't wait for the official release of the third volume coming up soon! <3<3<3

Content--action-type violence and injuries (gunplay, explosions, fires, etc.); slight mentions of wounds and blood; people are drugged; mention of a suicide bomber; lying and deception (and the ethical issues discussed); threats; mentions of swearing (no words)

Age Appropriate For: 13 and up for mild violence and intensity
Best for Ages: 13-25

I really enjoyed the fact that right after I finished the first book, I was able to dive right into the rest of the series using my Kindle Unlimited subscription. Let me just say that you really need to read not only book one, but also the novella, Christmas Hostage.

I really apricated how this story dealt with Lee trying to figure out what his new faith means for both is past and his future. While not very heavy in the book, I still greatly apricated those themes.

As with the first book, this one was filled with fun adventure, snark, and banter. I had so much fun. It was like watching a fun TV show episode. Sure, a few things were a bit farfetched, but that didn’t keep me from enjoying the book immensely.

I highly recommend this book for those who enjoyed the first one, those who enjoy young adult books, and anyone looking for a good spy adventure.

This book was even better than book one! I enjoyed seeing Lee growing slowly in finding God and doing what is right - but he was definitely still the same Lee! I enjoyed how the story had him working so closely with Winfield and seeing the relationship there.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not required. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

The highly trained action and quick thinking were a delight to read. I could follow what was happening a lot more easily in this book, even though plenty of elements are still a mystery or unexplained as of now.

The end of the book snuck up on me. I was reading along and suddenly it was ending. The series so far reads like a connected unified story. I will enjoy looking back at the overall story arc once I read the whole series.

Welp that was a crazy ride. Love the AKA Simon Lee series so much!!! My only complaint is they always end too soon...oh well. Also I can't put them down, which is sometimes a problem (but not exactly a complaint...).

Expect lots of action, suspense, cool gadgets, and crazy things. I really liked seeing how Lee grew in this one, so if you like Phantom Thief (or even if you thought Lee was annoying in Phantom Thief) read this!! We also start finding out a little bit more about Lee (or should I say Guardian Eagle?).

I don't remember an advisory content for this one, but I really, really, really need to *ahem* want to reread it!!

I received this book from the author for an honest review, all thoughts are my own.
This book starts right off from book 1.5. For a short while I couldn't get into the story and some reason it just took me a bit to get use to Lee's dad. There is plenty of action. The banter between Lee and his dad was a bit much at times, though it got some laughs from me. The end is where I finally felt like the story came as alive for me. The author keeps getting better. There are less grammar mistakes and goofy sentencs. I can't wait for the next story!

This book.
Just wow.
This was the first book of the series that I literally could not put down. I had a hard time putting the others down, but this one I could. not. put. down.

Enough fangirling. *halo*

The storyline in this one was very good, and I enjoyed that we got some more of the different agents and we get a little more into Winfield’s head. I really enjoyed Lee and his mental prowess really shining again, and I loved how suspenseful this book was. One thing that I wasn’t sure about (maybe it’s just me), but the sarcasm in this one was, to me, a lot more grating than in the other ones. Perhaps it’s because most of the sarcasm was directed toward Lee’s dad. I definitely enjoyed getting to see them interact a little more, even if their relationship is still strained. A couple things to keep in mind:
- There were 5+ instances of replacement words that I do not approve of. I understand people have differing opinions on this topic, so just keep it in mind.
- Toward the beginning of the book, Lee struggles with a question about lying, and the question never seemed to come to a conclusion. The closest it got to a conclusion seemed to be that because they were helping a lot of people, it was okay. Perhaps this was because the discussion was with a lost person, but I would have appreciated a more clear conclusion on that to be able to determine whether I agree or not. At this point, I don’t know where Lee stands, so I can’t say I agree or disagree with his standpoint.
- There is a lot of sarcasm in the book, and that can go either way. To me, like I said earlier, the sarcasm seemed more caustic in this book than in others. I understand that Lee’s relationship with his dad is strained, but I still don’t appreciate his very sarcastic interactions with his dad.

Again, I love this book, and I can’t wait to read more!!

Guardian Eagle is a fun new adventure with Lee and Winfield after the events of Phantom Thief. The plot follows on the heels of Christmas Hostage, the short story that takes place between Phantom Thief and Guardian Eagle so reading Christmas Hostage first helps set up the events that begin Guardian Eagle.

The plot is fast-paced and interesting. P. D. Akterson's books are fun, fantastic clean reads, and Guardian Eagle was no different, with a new mission for Lee with high stakes. And like with Phantom Thief, Lee is such a fun character. I love his sarcasm, and the banter between him and Winfield.

Guardian Eagle was interesting with its themes, with bringing in more of a faith element than what was in Phantom Thief, and with questions of morality, such as if there's a time it's okay to lie, such as when trying to protect others.

Like Phantom Thief, Guardian Eagle ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, and I can't wait to pick up the next book in the series!

Content: violence; a few characters being drugged at different points in the story.

Fun enjoyable story!!

I was given this book by the author for a honest review , all my thoughts are my own. This story starts right off from book 1.5. It's full of action. I couldn't get into the story for a while, but it kept me reading. I really liked the end it brought everything together really well. Real close to last chapter was my favorite part, I could really see such a perfect scene. The author keeps getting better. I look forward to the next story!
