3.5 DSP Beyond Hearts

I’m typically all for an amnesia trope and this one grabbed me pretty easily. Take note that with most amnesia storylines, the reveal and resolution are a bit long in coming which might frustrate some.

So yes, as per the blurb, Aidan basically finds himself naked and afraid, not knowing who he is or where he’s at. When he’s quickly found by his employer Nassim, it’s evident that they’re closer than just simply an employee/employer dynamic, but no one is willing to say much. Hence, Aidan starts on a journey of self discovery that lends more questions than answers and a growing inexplicable pull towards Nassim. Why is that? I think you already know the answer...

This book is loosely tied to the The Gryphon King's Consort, and I have to say that what I enjoyed most about book one was the complex world building and hierarchy, where here it was a bit lacking. I wanted more of the interesting world where the mythos lived. I wanted more about the dragons and their fascinating political and turf issues. I simply wanted these two things more cohesively connected and intertwined. Nassim’s history and his background was interesting and unique (just like King Luca’s) and the potential for expanding on that was missing. However, I appreciated Nassim and Aidan’s personal fears and struggles while the central mystery behind Aidan is slowly revealed.

Overall, I think that if you liked the first book, or love anything with dragons, plus enjoy the concept of the mate bond with some UST and smexy, then this will be a reliable DSP Beyond win. If Burke chooses to write additional stories in this world, hopefully she’ll bring more of the fantastical creatures and their elaborate cultures which is where this series shines the most and will keep me coming back for more!

I'm pretty sure this was my first solo Jenn Burke read and it was a delight.

I loved the atmosphere created through the narrative, it gave me a paranormal world set in Canada which felt normal and that's a great talent to have.

Both main characters were wonderfully fleshed out and my heart was breaking with Aiden as he struggled to realign his missing memories with his present situation. Nassim was quietly controlled but with a sense of repression and a melancholy air that made me just want to hug him.

The reader goes along with Aiden in the journey to discovering why he ended up with amnesia and I have to say, I didn't see the reasons coming at all!

There are other reviews out there with spoilers which haven't been hidden, so be aware of that as, personally, I think it's a book which works best when discovered as you read. It's a clever twist to use in a paranormal trope imho and I really liked the surprise.

I hadn't read book one in the series but didn't feel I was missing anything with this one. As it's a Dreamspinner publication, the steam is on the light side, but there's lots of UST in the build-up to them finally reconnecting which goes well with the overall plot.

I'd happily read more in this setting and would love to find out more about the dragons, Nassim's brother Fazl in particular as he seemed to be quite a sparky character!

If I had one criticism, it would be that the suspense element probably wasn't given enough time to percolate before it was all resolved in a big action scene that felt a touch out of place. Other than that though, a really enjoyable and quick read.

2★'s = it was ok.

Weeeellll…this was frustrating, made no sense and I am just not sure if I liked it very much. I think that The Gryphon King's Consort was a bit frustrating as well but at least there was something going on. I didn’t feel like this one was going anywhere and truthfully, it felt like oh, I disappeared for four days and came back with no memory but let’s go to work and then play softball! No! I mean, it didn’t seem all that big a deal and that was just odd because it was a really big deal.

Plus, I think I am not a fan of the amnesia trope. And I am especially not a fan of it going the way this one did. Ugh.

I feel like this just didn’t make any sense. If you can’t remember anything and there is no wooing or winning back or convincing, why are you into him? I just didn’t get it! I don’t understand who Aidan is really. Where did he come from? Is he a bad guy and just now good? So much just didn’t make any sense!

Even more frustrating? Trying to review this without spoiling it. I really can’t. I can’t tell you anything because it would give what happened away.

So, I’m just going to go with I didn’t really get this one to be able to like it all that much. I didn’t get the connection between them, maybe there was one before but post amnesia nadda. This just didn’t work out for me. Bummer because I do think the world is kinda interesting and I like this Author’s other series.

Ohhh, this was just delightful! A lovely blend of paranormal/fantasy elements, romance, some action and conflict, and a seriously sexy end and HEA.

This entire story is from Aidan's POV, so we get to follow him as he wakes with amnesia, and then tries to restore his life and also figure out what happened to him and what exactly caused the amnesia. His boss, Nassim, who also just happens to be a powerful dragon, offers to help Aidan get reacquainted with everyone at his job. Of course, there are plenty of things that Nassim hasn't told Aidan too. I don't want to give anything major away, but it's pretty obvious that there's more to Nassim and Aidan's relationship than just work.

I really enjoyed the blend of fantasy with our world. In this world, dragons, shifters, gryphons, all exist with our human world. They have a separate governing system and different rules. And all I will say about Aidan's secret is that it's awesome, unique, and I really loved how it worked within this story.

I would definitely love to read more of this series, maybe Fazl can get a story! Also, this is the sequel to the Gryphon King, but this one stands really well on its own.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Didn't know this was the second in the series but I didn't really get confused so that's good! The writing was fine and the pace was just right, it kept me wanting to read more without every dropping down and getting boring. I really don't know what to say other than this was a good read. It didn't blow my skirt up or impress me beyond belief but it was a fun short read that kept my attention. I'm glad I received an ARC so I could get into this world. I do think I will grab the first one because I am curious just what all happened.

A mostly fluffy PNR story involving dragons, other creatures of “mythos”, and their interactions with the modern human world. I’ll have to admit the cause of one protagonist’s amnesia was quite unexpected and added some zing to the the plot line. Overall it was a nice read, but it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary.

I admit that I wasn’t very impressed with the first book of this series – I thought it spent more time on politics rather than romance. Well, this second installment (though you can read it out of order, or you can also read it as a stand-alone) is SO much better! Guess it only need a dragon and amnesia trope to win my heart *laugh*

Aidan Bishop staggers out of the woods, naked, and with no memory about who he is. His only lifeline is when Nassim, who claims that he is Aidan’s boss, takes Aidan to his house and is there for Aidan as he struggles to get information about his past life. Having Aidan as a sole narrator really works because I, as reader, is in the same position as Aidan. I know nothing! So, I discover the truth piece by piece alongside Aidan. It makes the revelation about Aidan’s identity a great big of a deal.

I really like Aidan as well! Sure, he doesn’t remember a thing, but I love the way he stands up for himself. When Nassim – who clearly has the advantage of knowing Aidan and keeping a secret – basically retreats and hurts Aidan in the process by avoiding him, Aidan simply tells Nassim that. Aidan doesn’t care that Nassim is a dragon – and I love Aidan for that.

I do want to smack Nassim in the heads once or twice though. But he makes up in the end with his pleading speech towards Aidan. I read that scene over and over *grin*. So yes, Nassim, you’re forgiven

The Mythos related to Aidan’s case is really cool – it motivates me to look upon a Wikipedia entry for it, which always a proof that the author manages to intrigue me to find new knowledge. Kudos for that Ms. Burke.

You're not going to believe this, but this is YET ANOTHER bisexual MM romance. The "dragon CEO" lost his female mate in the past! What a surprise, "gay romance" that is actually "bisexual romance." Who could have thought?!

And of course the answer is anyone with even a passing familiarity with MM romance could have guessed. I actively screen for mentions of wives/girlfriends/romantic ties with women in each book I read, and I STILL end up with about 8-9/10 "MM" romances with these devices used. If ever there were a sign that the MM genre has become "yaoi with words" and is so clearly bordering on the line of unacceptable appropriative fetishing, it's this. I bet most of these authors (and readers) consider themselves "liberal" and "progressive"--appropriating homosexual culture and shoehorning heterosexuality into it is NOT progressive, it is literally REgressive, and it must stop.

What started in book one of the ‘Golden Kingdom’ series with a remarkable love story between two gryphon shifters and was set in an unusual shifter world, is continued in this second book with a tale that is just as fascinating, suspenseful, and full of secrets. This time the focus is on Aidan, a young man who emerges naked from the woods without a single memory about who he is. His boss is the enigmatic CEO of a tech company, a dragon shifter, and a man who is clearly more than interested in Aidan. How does all this fit together? You are in for quite a ride if you want to find out.

I loved how this romance stepped away from most stereotypical shifter tropes!

Content warnings include: amnesia, murder, blackmail, gunfight, characters get shot, sex on-page; mentions of drowning.

The whole amnesia plot was handled well and dominated most of the book. It wasn't all that stand out to me, but I loved all the little details around the setting: the company Nassim and Aidan work for, the bits of mythos (=shifter) politics that came through and the different kinds of mythos that appeared.

I would have liked the book to be longer in pretty much all parts. More about the side characters, more about what's going on in the background. The one thing I would have liked to be a bit shorter was the length it took for Aidan to find out anything about his life. It wasn't that it got boring or frustrating because the rest is pleasant and diverting, but a few more hints and a gradual build would have been nice.

It's technically second in a series but can absolutely be read as a standalone.

Overall a very pleasant read for in between.

I received an ARC and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

“Happiness is too fleeting to waste time on something you don’t like, and life is too long to dwell on things that don’t make you happy.”

This is officially the first paperback I’ve finished in years! Ever since I discovered ebooks I haven’t been able to put my kindle down and it feels weird to hold a physical book while reading but the story was so good I pushed through haha.

It was a single POV story told from Aidan’s POV and in this case it was necessary and fit the story so well. I love a good amnesia story and this one was awesome. I didn’t want to put the book down cause I needed to know what happened!

This book was fun, mysterious, intriguing and is set where I’m going on vacation next month so that was super neat! I definitely recommend this story and so glad I picked it up!

DNFing at 20% because the hero who’s on an amnesiac voyage of self discovery, experiences attraction to another guy’s butt and immediately thinks, “I’m gay.” Not “I like men”. Not “I might be bi”. Not “Maybe I’m pan.” Or “queer”. Nope, directly to gay.

I tried continuing to read but the erasure was too annoying.

Good

I liked seeing the dragons and their mythology. The amnesia trope is one I’ve seen before and I felt it was done well. I liked both our MCs and I rooted for their HEA.

I liked the storyline but the worldbuilding was lacking and the characterisation - especially of Nassim - was really thin.

I just fancied something that was the book equivalent to a popcorn film. Get swept away and isn’t too taxing on the brain. Yep- this hit the mark!!

It was a bit predictable but did have a twist. Not bad but not great. That’s no ringing endorsement but it’s on Kindle Unlimited so go fill your boots with dragons and other mystical stuff......

This was a damn good story. I mean, dragons, right? But it’s not just that. There are all kinds of paranormals involved. Dragons are just the feature. But this book has some twists and turns in it that you don’t expect coming and it leaves you not wanting it to end. I couldn’t put it down.
It starts out with a naked man in a field behind a building. The man has no idea who he is or where he’s from or anything. He just knows he’s a man, naked, behind a building. As he gets closer, someone comes out and they recognize him. They tell him his name, and that he’s been missing for 4 days. He can’t remember anything. Not one single thing. He goes back to work and is quick to settle in, but the police, or a police keeps coming to interrogate him. Over people he don’t know and now he’s made a threat, Aiden has no clue about. All he knows is tensions are high between him and his boss, Nassim, and he let something slip that was a whopper. And that’s after finding out something about himself he didn’t know. Now his past is coming to confront him about what he’s supposed to be doing and it isn’t pretty. He can’t believe this of himself and now his past and his future are trying to collide in bad ways. And he has to stop it before his boss and lover are hurt.
I can not imagine what Aiden has had to go through. Every time he’s killed in some way, he leaves his body and comes back to remember nothing. And that’s telling you too much already. But I can’t imagine it. Constant amnesia. And then when you find out, you find out you were set up to betray the one person you’ve come to love. And for Nassim, things are just as hard. His long past has given him a form of PTSD and it keeps him in constant fear of being able to move forward to do anything. Or be with anybody. Just when he was getting used to being with Aiden, Aiden disappears and everything in his past comes back with a vengeance. So they both have battles to overcome. And it’s not easy. Especially the more Aiden is finding out about himself. The tensions are high and everyone is hot headed. They have to have time to cool down and think about what’s really important to them. And it’s sad that it takes almost losing someone again to make things come in perspective.
It’s a really good book. Really good. I need to go back and read the first one to see how this all started.

Jenn Burke is back with more of her paranormal fantasy romance series, The Golden Kingdom. This sequel to The Gryphon King’s Consort picks up about a year later but with a new focus on the dragon community. I originally hoped we’d get a little more of Duke Rudel’s story, and while he does make an appearance, this story centers around Nassim Kader, a powerful dragon CEO who’s still licking the traumatic wounds of his past, and his assistant Aidan Bishop. What readers encounter as the story opens doesn’t promise to make life easier for either of them in any way.

The Dragon CEO’s Assistant exudes mystery and intrigue from the moment Aidan stumbles out of the woods naked and confused. That series of events unleashes a race to uncover the pieces of his missing memories and determine just what happened to him and why. Burke uses Aidan’s POV to give readers a firsthand look at how he’s floundering about trying to get a handle on life. One particularly interesting part of that is Nassim; it’s pretty clear there’s something more to Aidan’s relationship with Nassim than boss-employee, but discovering it’s nature creates a thrilling anticipation. Burke masterfully reveals just enough to give readers a sense of familiarity without giving away too much, keeping them on the edge of their seats as the mystery unfolds.

This was a fun, quick paranormal fantasy. I love books where it's like "everything is the same, except magical creatures exist and are part of everyday life." Aiden and Nassim were a really nice pairing. You could tell that Nassim really needed Aiden, but was absolutely lost when Aiden went missing only to turn up with no memories of either himself or Nassim. Suddenly Aiden needed him and he had to reconcile that with the feelings of loss that plague him.

Dragon culture was so interesting and I wish there was another book in the series that focused on it so we could learn a bit more. The story was filled with small moments that made me laugh and smile even as I was trying to uncover the great mystery of "What happened to Aiden?" I am definitely going to read the first book in the series now!

Line that made me laugh the most:
Nassim groaned and glared at Aidan. “We are not marsupials. We share some characteristics with them. That’s all.”
“Giant sky kangaroos.” Aidan nodded smugly.

4.25/5 The mystery of this book, with poor Aiden having no personal memories but trying to figure out who he is definitely tugged on my heartstrings. It was clear that Nassim was hiding things, but I thought the story balanced the proximity and power imbalance quite well overall. Aiden has been left in a particularly vulnerable position, and Nassim has a lot more power (in addition to all sorts of baggage that make this situation difficult for him).

I really empathised with Aiden and thought the single POV worked well to have the reader going on the same journey of discovery that Aiden was. This is relatively short, and in some ways, Aiden and Nassim don’t have much time together, but between the proximity and the underpinning of the past (even if Aiden doesn’t consciously remember it), it felt like a strong connection was there. I loved the flying scenes, and Nassim’s family was great. There were some excellent twists and turns, some surprise discoveries, and some tense action to get us to the HEA. I really liked these two together and was happy with how it resolved.

I enjoyed this story. Poor Aiden has lost all his memories and with no memory of what happened finds himself stumbling out next to a building that ends up being his place of work. Nassim and everyone else have been worried sick about Aiden after he disappeared, but finding him alive is only the beginning of the story as everyone tries to figure out what happened and also find a new normal.

I felt for Nassim and Aiden in this story. Both of them had things they were hiding for different reasons and those secrets caused there to be a lot of mistrust that the two men needed to get past to find their way back to each other. Their relationship was fragile and each new piece of information had the potential to shatter them. But, they fought through things to find each other and find out just what had happened to Aiden. This would give them a foundation for the future.

This book was a solid story that stayed on the right side of sweetness and caring.

“But suffice it to say, dragons take care of their own.” I really loved this one. It has mystery, angst, magic and dragons. Aidan and Nassim are both lovable and flawed, and had me floating with happiness as they found theirs. Plus, they’re smoking hot together. It was a twisty-topsy unraveling of all the secrets but I’m an eager believer in them both.

Like the previous story in the series this book is missing something I cannot pinpoint. I was hoping to get more from it and I think it definitely had potential. However the way it was written, a lot of things didn't really make sense or left questions in my head. Overall, the story just was and wasn't really going somewhere. So yeah, it was a nice read, but unremarkable.
