Life on the Moors #4

A Christmas Kiss

Rate this book
A sparkling festive romance that will warm your heart this Christmas.

The week before Christmas, GP Zander Gillespie finds his festive plans in tatters. He’s supposed to be flying out to his parents’ chateau in Carcassonne with his high-maintenance girlfriend, Melissa. But she has other ideas. She wants to spend Christmas in London with her party friends – and he’s not invited.

The prospect of facing his family, with their questions and their sympathy – not to mention the ‘I told you so-s’ - just isn’t an option. Instead, Zander decides to head to his holiday cottage in the quaint moorland village of Lytell Stangdale, where he intends to hide away with his faithful rescue Labrador Alf.

Eighty miles away, Livvie’s world has come crashing down. With plans to cook a romantic meal for her boyfriend, she heads home early and walks in on him in a compromising position with their neighbour. Fed-up of his lies and philandering ways, this is the final straw.

With her Christmas plans up in smoke, the thought of spending it with her parents and her smug, married sister with her pompous husband in tow, is enough to bring Livvie out in hives. So, when she fires up her laptop and finds the perfect little holiday cottage in Lytell Stangdale available to rent over the festive period, it seems the perfect solution. Or is it…?

Zander didn't believe in love at first sight until he set eyes on Livvie. Livvie had sworn off men until she met Zander. The pair may be reluctant to give in to temptation, but fate seems to have other ideas...

Join Livvie and Zander - and all the usual characters - for a magical Christmas in Lytell Stangdale. The perfect cosy read to snuggle up with this Christmas

Favorite Quotes:

Zander struggled not to laugh at Mary who was dressed as Madonna complete with a pair of the largest conical breasts he’d ever seen… ‘They’re more like traffic cones.’ ‘Mind where you’re pointing them things, Mary, you’ll have someone’s eye out,’ Jimby said, chuckling. ‘Aye, they’re like a couple of nuclear weapons, Big M,’ said Camm.

‘And who’s this bonny lass here, then?’ Gerald asked, eyeing Livvie up and down. He reached into the pocket of his skin-tight leopard-print leggings and pulled out a pair of false teeth, popping them into his mouth with a rattle. Molly leaned in to Livvie. ‘And there was me thinking he was pleased to see me.’ Livvie did her best to suppress a giggle. ‘Ah, you can always tell when he spots a bonny lass; the teeth go straight in.’ Mary put her hands on her generous hips and rolled her eyes.

‘Granny Aggie.’ ‘Yep, it’s Granny bloody Aggie; up to her usual with the vicar.’ ‘Sounds ominous,’ said Zander. ‘You’ve no idea,’ said Jimby. ‘What’s she said now, Moll?’ Molly sighed. ‘You know how she’s been feeding that stray cat?’ ‘Yes.’ Rosie looked worried. ‘Oh, God, I think I know what’s coming next,’ said Violet. ‘Well, she’s only gone and sent Rev Nev a text telling him that she has a lovely pussy and asked him if he wants to go and stroke it. Told him it purrs if he does it gently.’… ‘Please tell me she’s done that in innocence.’ Molly snorted. ‘Like bugger she has; the wicked old bat knows exactly what she’s doing, pretends it’s innocent though.’

My Review:

This was a delightfully fun and deftly written book with a few absorbing and intriguing dashes of vile and villainous behaviors. The premise was entertaining, the storylines were humorous and impeccably well-crafted, and the nimble writing was easy to fall into yet cunningly perceptive, cleverly witty, and comically detailed. I wore a near-constant and gleeful smirk while reading and barked out a few chuckles and giggle-snorts as well. Eliza J. Scott has discovered the recipe for the secret sauce and has generously applied her savvy word magic throughout this divinely entertaining and effortless read.

Two city dwellers find themselves thrown together in a quaint and quirky little village inhabited by the most supremely odd yet uniquely appealing, thoughtful, humorous, and pleasantly beguiling residents. The extremely likable two main characters were strangers yet they were immediately comfortable with each other. They were both unexpectedly taking a last-minute separate holiday away from their own unpleasant and dissatisfactory relationships, which had reached their expiration date. A computer glitch and inclement weather found them sharing a holiday cottage as well as snow and ice adventures, village holiday fun, dispiriting and cringe-worthy ex moments, a precious rescued Labrador, an instant kinship and rapidly blossoming yet tacit attraction, and a hilarious 80’s theme party with an elderly woman dressed as the conically corseted Madonna. I may now be Ms. Scott’s most fervent and rabid fan for that diabolically clever scene alone.

I found treasure with several exciting new additions for my Brit Word List with aud mucker – old friend; nithered – very cold; and skew-whiff – crocked or twisted to one side.

Eliza J. Scott has put the ho ho ho in holiday with this festive story! Once again I got to visit the charming village of Lytell Stangdale, this is the fourth book in this small town romance series but can definitely be read as a standalone. We did get to revisit some of the characters from the previous books at a few of the village events, however the bulk of the story focuses on two new characters Zander and Livvie. Zander finds himself alone for Christmas after his girlfriend decided she’d rather spend time with her party friends and he doesn’t want to bring down the family during the holidays. SO he and his dog Elf head to his holiday cottage in Lytell Stangdale. After catching her boyfriend with the next-door neighbor Livvie decides to spend Christmas alone and lick her wounds so she books a holiday cottage for Christmas, Guess where? This was a sweet romance with fabulous characters, a wonderful setting, and all the festive feels! Zander and Livvie were both great characters with some baggage and I loved watching the spark grow between them. The star of the show though was definitely Elf I love every scene he was in, and a couple of them had me laughing out loud. A whimsical story that will give you the warm fuzzies! Grab a cup of hot chocolate, a fluffy blanket, light the fire, and spend the day in this darling village with these charming characters.

All of the festive feels! Seriously, I am floating around on a festive cloud at the moment. I found A Christmas Kiss to be the perfect Winter read to curl up with.

A Christmas Kiss is the fourth book in the Life on the Moors series. I have not read the other books in the series and this did not detract from the enjoyment that I found reading  Zander and Livvie's story.

I read the festive romance genre because I want the warm and fuzzies, but what I also want is to enjoy the journey, I want to feel like I am there, in the moment, going on that journey with the characters. A Christmas Kiss delivered on all fronts.  The characters that I was introduced to in this journey to Lytell Stangdale are fresh feeling, yet richly developed. It makes me want to hop in my car head to the moors and spend more time with them.

I have been on a wonderful journey with many wonderful (and of course, a few less than wonderful.) characters and have Ms Scott to thank for that. I look forward to more journeys to Lytell Stangdale because this may be my first visit but it won't be my last.

Love at first sight? My usual response will be a smirk. So if I am giving a five star to this book that means the cute storyline and beautiful storyline has charmed even the cynic in me. Without a doubt, this is one of the cosiest reads that I have the pleasure of reading this year.

This is the fourth book in the Life on the Moors series but can be read as a standalone. The characters from the previous stories make an appearance, but that doesn't need to hinder your reading pleasure. It didn't for me. Livvie and Zander and Alf, the intelligent dog, build up quite an atmosphere that makes you wish for Christmas every day. Sure, this little quadruple takes a major chunk of our attention and one could never tire of reading his gimmicks. He seems to take seriously his self-appointed duty as a chaperone to his master. Well, that means there was a rather long wait for us readers for the Christmas kiss mentioned in the title. Sigh!

Altogether, a festive read that will make you warm and fuzzy with some pretty characters and a closely-knit community. Highly recommended . . .

this book sure made me believe in the cosmic connection between the two main characters.

A week before Christmas, Zander's girlfriend was off with friends leaving him alone with his mate, his dog Alf. Livvie had broken with her two timing louse of a boyfriend. I say - good riddence. And both found themselves in the same cottage. Would you call it serendipity? I sure would. Romance happened and love struck. But past too sneaked,

My first book by Eliza J. Scott, the writing was flawless. The emotions and romance dazzled through the prose delighting me with the emotions. Each of the main characters had a past, and it was wonderful to see them growing beyond it. Humor was interspersed beautifully with love when Alf took centerstage.

The story depicted the hope of Christmas in the cold snow of the village. It showed me the warm hearts of the people who truly made this a festive read.

An enjoyable storyline bringing out romance and filling me with a Christmas spirit, how could I remain the Grinch. Hope grew abound when I read this book written by Eliza J. Scott.

A Christmas kiss is such a beautiful, charming and sweet tale.
It is part of a series but it could be read as a stand alone but at the end you will be so curious you will run to 1-click the previous books to know more about the Lytell Stangdale villagers.

Zander and Livvie live two different lives in two different cities,a doctor the first and a saleswoman in a wedding dress shop the latter. When their plans for Christmas holidays are ruined by their partners they decided to run from their current lonely predicament and what's better than spend few days in a lovely cottage in the Moors.
Fate made them meet, will they accept their destiny and choose to change their lives in order to be happier? Or will they say goodbye to each other at the end of the holidays?

This was the perfect book to start my Christmassy reads...I highly recommend it.

*I voluntarily reviewed this book from the tour organiser.

Warm, inviting, and just a lovely read, A CHRISTMAS KISS by Eliza J. Scott is a great read for the season.

Zander is left disappointed by his long-term girlfriend once again and at Christmas no less. Not wanting to bring the spirit down with his own family, Zander spots that his holiday cottage is empty and decides to spend it there alone, with his furry best friend, Alf. Maybe some time alone will help him figure out just what he wants for his future.
Livvie's world has just been blown apart when she walks in her boyfriend cheating on her. Needing to escape, she books a holiday cottage in a quiet, little village where she hopes to lick her wounds and figure out her next move.

What neither of them expects is to be sharing the same house or the instant connection that seems to spark between them. As they spend more time together, they struggle with their feelings for each other. Will Christmas work its magic on both of their broken hearts and show them what true love could be like?

A CHRISTMAS KISS by Eliza J. Scott is the fourth book in a series but it can easily be read as a standalone story which is how I read it. But I intend to read the other books as I really enjoyed the author's writing style and flair for romance. The village is beautifully depicted and I enjoyed the community spirit of everyone there. Zander and Livvie are wonderful characters and I enjoyed watching them figure out their worth and believing in love.

A CHRISTMAS KISS by Eliza J. Scott is delightful from start to finish and is sure to please all Christmas fiction and romance fans alike.

Aww this was a nice book - I like to read Christmas books in December and thus was a nice easy read, the characters were good and although a bit cheesy, it was quite amusing in its way, so I enjoyed it. Some of the names of the places sounded a bit strange, but they could be accurate who knows? The two main characters, Livvie and Zander were good and there were some funny parts in their musings, but it was just a feel good book and that what you want sometimes.

That Christmas Kiss could melt all the snow.

Another great story from Eliza. I love the “family” feel. How Molly, Kitty, Vi and the boys all welcome the newcomers and make everyone feel at home.

This book is number four in the Life on the Mooors series and it's my first ever Eliza J. Scott book! I was a little wary of throwing myself into a series not having read the other three books but I can honestly say this can be read as a stand-alone with no feelings of missing out. Although I do feel like I've missed out on some fab stories of other characters so I have added the first three books to my to be read pile.

A Christmas Kiss is about two people, two strangers who suddenly find themselves thrown together the week before Christmas.

Livvie is escaping her horrendous boyfriend Donny who doesn't deserve her after she finds him pretty much with his pants down with the next door neighbour. Unable to face her family for comfort over the Christmas holidays she decides a break away on her own to get her thoughts in gear would be the ideal solution so she books herself a holiday cottage in a little village called Lytell Stangdale.

Zander's also escaping his Christmas plans, he should have been holidaying with family at a Chateau in Carcassonne but after his girlfriend Mel gets a better option to party in London his plans are turned upside down and not wanting to face his family and all the sympathetic faces decides to head off for his holiday cottage alone in Lytell Stangdale. Now you know where I'm heading with this...!

Of course Zander isn't totally alone, Alf his dog stole the show and my heart. So loveable and cheeky and in particular one situation he had me in stitches. I really enjoyed reading the relationship between Zander and his dog Alf, the strong bond they have was so lovely.

Eliza's writing style makes for an enjoyable read, I was hooked from the first few lines. I loved both characters, I loved that we got a chance to read their point of view during each chapter. I also enjoyed the humour throughout making me grin like a cheshire cat while on public transport!

Livvie and Zander have this instant chemistry while in Lytell Stangdale they try shutting out the real world living in a bubble but with both their pasts catching up with them they both have issues to resolve before they can move on. Showing that you can't always run away from your past as it always has a knack of catching up with you whether you like it or not.

Livvie and Zander both get stuck into village life, fancy dress parties and Christmas carols round the Christmas tree. Here we meet the characters from past books of the series. Eliza does a great job of giving little background snippets for them all which really helps. The local village folk soon have an effect on Livvie that she feels as if she has been there all her life and makes some wonderful friendships.

I'm a sucker for a festive romance book and this gave me everything I was hoping for and more. A dream to read and made me feel full of festive cheer. Who doesn't love a story full of humour, fun, romance and also every day real life issues that balance the story perfectly making it a little more true to life.

Big thanks to Eliza J. Scott and Rachel Randon Resources for the ARC which I have reviewed honestly. A must read this Christmas!

The perfect cosy read to snuggle up with this Christmas

Disclaimer: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to Eliza J Scott and Rachel’s Random Resources for this free copy.

Oh my gosh. I was not expecting this book to get super messed up, or I mean start super messed up! I mean I know the synopsis has both of the main characters having a really bad relationship ending and that’s kind of the start of how the two meet one another, but ouch. I was literally cringing seeing what Zander and especially Livvie had to go through before they were able to enjoy their freaking Christmas holiday.

First of all, no one should ever try to come between a person and their dog. Like, ever. This was the solidifying point for me that Mel was an asshole. Not just because she pretty much uses Zander for his money and has no regard for him at all, nor her probably cheating on him with these so called “friends” that she’ll make last minute plans with. And how she gets his hopes up about doing something together for the longest time, and then right before it’s supposed to happen, she says she doesn’t like to or want to do it. He hasn’t been happy with her for pretty much a year or longer since he’s been with her, and unfortunately he keeps gravitating to the wrong type of women.

With Livvie though… ugh that was one of the worst situations that I’ve seen in a book after The Flatshare. Donny had the gall, the freaking audacity to be a dick to Livvie to her damn face, and she still somehow dealt with it for over a year as well.

This was Donny’s reasoning for why he cheated on Livvie with not only the new neighbor – who Livvie found having sex with Donny on her couch in her apartment after work – but other women as well for the majority of their relationship.

Like, I’m about to kick this dude in the balls, and thank goodness Livvie already kicked him in the ass – literally.

There’s more of course, when she thinks to back to how he had treated her throughout the final year or so of their relationship, and the abuse and disrespect is freaking clear.

So yeah, both Zander and Livvie went through emotionally abusive relationships, and no wonder they are both pretty scarred when they end up meeting and attempting to fall for one another.

If you’re able to get past that beginning, I feel like the story gets better and that Zander and Livvie are able to slowly go through the healing process of all the trauma that they had to endure at the hands of those they allowed themselves to be vulnerable to… then you can enjoy this novel. But just a heads up that it does not start off on a good note whatsoever, so be prepared. Possibly skip the first two chapters if you don’t want to read about that.

A Christmas Kiss is Eliza J Scott's fourth book in the Life on the Moors Series - an absolutely wonderful series - I have thoroughly enjoyed every book. I am a huge fan of Eliza J Scott's books - this is her first Christmas novel which I was so looking forward to reading and Wow! A truly festive, delightful read by an amazing author.

It is a pleasure to be back in the beautiful village of Lytell Stangdale, a village where community, family and friendship is at its heart, a village which brings you alive, supports you and helps you no matter what. I wish Lytell Stangdale was a real village which we could go and visit - I would love to meet everyone and have a drink in the pub!

In A Christmas Kiss, we meet Zander and Livvie - and not forgetting the very adorable and full of character Labrador Alf! It was lovely catching up with the villagers that feature in the previous novels, finding out what they are up to now and hearing about their various funny antics. I was in stitches in some parts of the book!

A Christmas Kiss is an absolutely delightful read that gives you a wonderful festive feeling - I loved, loved, loved every page. Such a cosy read with a fantastic storyline, so cleverly written, with great characters who have such great depth to them.

I did not want A Christmas Kiss to end - I wanted to read more about Zander and Livvie and find out what happens next! The book had such a perfect romantic ending. A Christmas Kiss will be a book that I will read every Christmas!

Such a charming read, full of warmth, and makes you feel so Christmassy, wanting to put your Christmas tree up straight away!

Definitely 5 Stars, I would give it more if I could! Never give up on your dreams, follow your instincts, and believe in yourself :-)

What a lovely story this was to read, just perfect for feeling the Christmas spirit!

Zander and Livvie are both in a not so amazing relation. So when Livvie finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her, she needs an escape.
Inspired by the RomCom ‘The Holiday’, she books a little cottage to escape from everything and everyone.
Zander planned to go spend the holidays with his girlfriend and his family in Carcassonne. But when she suddenly decides to go to London with friends instead, Zander decides to go to his cottage to reflect on what’s happening.
And yes, of course, it’s the same cottage Livvie booked!

While I was reading this book, my initial reservations about the whole falling head over heels in love were scattered.
Zander and Livvie are both so amazing people, I just wish I knew them for real!
But they are also very correct. Despite their attraction, they don’t give in as Zander is officially still in a relation.
How often in real life people just don’t care about that and do whatever they please?
I got totally swept away and was dreaming about me being there, in a lovely cottage with an amazing man like Zander.
And let’s also give credit to Alf, the most lovely, attention seeking Labrador! He made me laugh with his sparkling character. He’s just amazing, and you can feel how much he truly loves Zander and he is real good at sensing people’s characters. So he instantly likes Livvie!

So yes, I absolutely loved this book and now I am totally in the right Christmas Spirit!!!

Today I am excited to be sharing my review for A Christmas Kiss by Eliza J Scott, this was my first book by this author and what a corker to start with. I read this as a stand alone book and now want to read the previous books, I loved meeting these wonderful characters in the lovely moorland village of Lytell Stangdale.

Livvie is a bubbly character loooking to escape her current life and seek refuge for a quiet Christmas where she doesn't know anyone. What she is expecting when she books her last minute trip to Lytell Stangdale and what happens turn out to be very different, when she encounters Zander and his lovely rescue Labrador Alf.

I loved this book from the first few pages and the array of vibrant personalities scattered throughout this festive read just jumped off the pages. I can't believe this was my first book by this author and I can't wait to read more as I quickly fell in love with the characters and was eager to keep reading.

This time the villagers we already were very familiar with play a smaller role, but we have the pleasure to meet some lovely and not so lovely new characters.

Sometimes you are in a relationship and you know, somewhere deep inside, that you are not very happy and your partner is not really the one you want to spend the rest of your life with. But somehow you are in a routine and you muddle on.

Suddenly there was the straw that not only broke the camel’s back but also your heart. A bright future awaits because in the meantime you have met the one you have always been waiting for. The one that makes the stars shine brighter and the snow seem whiter. 🙂

I loved this story as well as the previous parts. A fabulous series. I hope there are many more sequels to come. 5 stars

Sweet, Feel Good Christmas/Wintry Romance

I enjoyed a Christmas Kiss. It's a lively heartwarming story about two people who are in unhappy toxic relationships. She is running away from a cheating boyfriend and he has been left on his own by a selfish girlfriend. They meet and there's a slow burn, Christmas/Wintry romance, which was a pleasure to read on a cosy winter afternoon/evening.

Entertaining read

I do enjoy these stories about life in the Yorkshire countryside, and the inevitable Happy Ending, but it was spoilt for me by one glaring mistake, repeated several times....the dish she was to cook is TOURNEDOS Rossini, not 'Tornado Rossini', which doesn't exist. It wouldn't have been too difficult to check
this.
